Hi, folks :,) I've only tried with the Iconia A500 because it's the only one I've found with both a mini usb & full usb on the tablet itself, which I prefer, but if it can't do this, I can reconsider other tablets. I've also tried it on my Archos 101 on Froyo but the media apps are really slow directly accessing the usb drives, not to mention other general performance problems. Reggie

If the media app is able to browse folders, then yes, it can access external storage.
If it can't browse folders, then no, it can't.
Depends entirely on which app you're using. Moboplayer, for example, can browse folders and therefore works fine with external storage.
On that note, whenever I plug in an external drive Gallery does also pick up the media on it.
I would agree.
I think the key is if the app is mentioned for tablets would likely see thr external media.this is something that will be all worked out in time as honeycomb apparently deals with external fifteenth then previous vversions
If im wrong remember I spank back
Thanks for the reply, guys! I've tried this before on 2 Iconias & couldn't access my G2 Portable 320GB usb drive. But just now, a 3rd Iconia can access my G2 as well as my GoPro, while a 4th can access my G2 but not my GoPro. I've tried waiting for some time for the devices to load before trying to access them, but I really can't access the GoPro no matter what. I am pleasantly surprised that I can access the G2 now however, even if I don't know the reason why. I tried to reset the 3rd unit & still no problem. I'll try to reset the 4th unit tomorrow & see if that will solve the problem.
Hmmm, now that I think about it, I wasn't even using a media app today-I was using a file explorer, Bluetooth File Transfer, & I still had that problem with GoPro.
I am in transit in Greece, & the buying culture here is such that I can't test the unit I'm buying before actually buying it, & if I find a problem even just 5 minutes after I buy it, I will have to wait days before I can get a working replacement or a refund.
These last 2 Iconias have the same following specs:
Android version 3.0.1
Kernel version 2.6.36.3
Build number Acer_A500_1.139.05_COM_GEN1
Any ideas?

I dont have a problem searching, but my wifes NC makes 4 tablets in our house so keeping this all in my head is rather hectic, so if I can find out IF this is possible, I can search for HOW TO (unless someone wants to tell me)
We have aversion of CM7 on her 32gb uSD card, and that boots great, and when she wants more than a basic NC she goes that route.
However I tried to transfer some movies to her from the laptop, and they are too big for the internal memory and even loading them on a uSD I get unrecognized file type (when booting as a regular NC)
However, when I boot from the uSD card w/ CM7 (I believe it is the march 2011 version, I dont have the #), SHOULD I be able to plug it into the laptop USB and the xfer cards over that way?
When I plug it in Win7 tries to load the drivers and fails and nothing is available through Explorer.
When booting under the NC there is a NC "drive: that I can click on and copy to.
Any thoughts, ideas, would be helpful
Thanks
J
In settings, be sure that USB debugging is enabled. It also seems to work MUCH better if you use a cable other than the Nook Color cable. I use the cable that came with my phone and it works much better for connecting to the PC.
framitz.
Thanks for the tips.
at least now I know that it SHOULD be able to happen.
Ill check debugging AND the cable when i get home.
Do you know if there have been any major changes or updates since the Apr 10th release?
I personally use a Gtab ZT180 and AugenG78, and on most of their ROM pages they have a series of dates and changes on the home page of the post.
BUT I know everyone does things differently, and personally other than the HC rom Im using on the gTAB I think the CM&/NC combo is the best value/performence out today!
I think I have sold more MC's through recommendation than the local BN guy "Pierce" (so named due to the metal additions) here in town
J
I run rooted stock 1.2. with ManualNooter 4.6.16.
I haven't played with other ROMS.
You might also try the Samba Filesharing app. It allows you to connect to your SDcard on the NC as a network share. Then you can copy files to and from any PC on your network without any cables.
now THATS another great idea, I have one on my GTAB but hadnt thought about the NC because I thought that was already dealt with.
thanks

I'm not familiar with this app, but I use File Expert (free) to connect to the PC via wifi and it works great. It uses the shares on the PC instead of opening up the Nook. Same results, but I feel safer using File Expert for moving data.
I know that 3.1 added support for a broader spectrum of USB devices, and I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of what works and doesn't work!
So far, I've tried:
ACER LIQUID E - Basically just charges the phone and allows for tethering (wish I could mount it) **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Liquid E is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
HP WIRELESS MINI KEYBOARD (Model #U10G) - Works flawlessly! Prior to the update, only the keyboard worked, but now the mouse works too, as expected!
SONY CYBERSHOT (Model #DSC-W55) - At first the Iconia didn't detect it, but after I went into the camera menu and changed USB connect mode from "auto" to "mass storage" and plugged it back into the tablet, the Gallery app opened automatically and the pics from the camera magically appeared! Woohoo!
LOGITECH ATTACK 3 JOYSTICK - Not too useful, but it works! Basically it works as a glorified mouse, scrolling up/down/left/right. Pretty basic for now, but perhaps a good flight simulator will come out in the future?
SAMSUNG STORY STATION 1 TB HARD DRIVE - My biggest disappointment... I know there are workarounds to get external drives to work, but I was hoping 3.1 would provide a fix for this. It is formatted FAT32, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but my Iconia isn't picking it up **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Story Station is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
I can confirm the iphone 3gs will charge and you can import photos/movies taken on the camera.
I have a cannon camera at home. I know they have a strange interface which always requires me to load a separate driver in windows. I will test it later and let you know.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I'm not currently rooted, but I'll likely take that plunge soon. I was hoping 3.1 would cure that in the stock software, but we can't always get what we want

No idea - would probably involve a rooted device and a custom rom - head to the dev section.
Logitech mx510 and mx518 mice confirmed.
Xbox 360 wired controller works but found no games that use it and it is very clunky for nav'ing the UI in general.

A "safe" way? I'm pretty sure it won't explode if you just unplug them.
In all seriousness, you should be able to just unplug them without losing data. At least I always have.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason you have to "eject" removable media from windows is because windows has some sort of drive caching to speed things up. This means that just because you have copied a file to your usb drive, doesn't mean the data has actually been written right away.
Furthermore, Windows also locks out files that are in use by an active application. As such, windows makes you "eject" the media in order to give the OS a chance to check to see if any of the files are still in use, to avoid the application having a brain fart and crashing. Also, if an application is in the process of writing to a file and you yank out the drive, the file could become corrupt.
I think both scenarios are not likely to occur on an Android tablet, mainly because its based on a real operating system not designed to treat you like an idiot. Just make sure none of the data is being used by any open apps and you should be fine.
That being said, always make sure to keep backups.
Cheers,
-PW

Yay! Glad it worked for you. Enjoy!
I have a Nexus 7 16G and right now I have attached a flash drive to the unit. From reading everything, it says I can use Es FileExplorer and get to /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1 - however, I cannot get to this folder. When I click on the /sdcard/ - I get clear history.
I tried using my Bluetooth keyboard to type, but that did not work.
Everything I have read speaking about rooting the device, which I do not want to do. How can I get to this folder?
I did get the Media Importer but that did not seem to work. I think it was because of too many connections. I found an article PSA: Amazon Has A USB OTG Cable For Less Than A Dollar With Free Shipping, So You Should Probably Buy It, which is a lot better that what I have.
But will the Nexus 7 support 64GB or 32GB? I called support and they said they did not know of a memory limitation.
Thank you!

N7 supports even hub (with external power source if you connect power-hungry devices)!
you can connect keyboards and mouses with no root but you have to root and install stickmount (from the play store) to manage external drives (hdd, flash drives, etc.). With stock kernel fat32 is supported as r/w, ntfs only read. You need to flash a custom kernel to get ntfs r/w support.
With no root, there's no way. Sorry.
Hm, I get different answers.

When you say hub, can you let me know exactly what you might mean? I think I know, but I would like to be sure. I would like to stop buying things and have them not work.
Example - I connected a non-powered, 4-port Belkin USB hub to the Nexus using the OTG cable. I plugged a thumb drive and a wireless mouse receiver into the hub and was able to simultaneously use both the mouse and the thumb drive (using Nexus Media Importer).
Dave
edit - I am not rooted.
OK, that is what I thought. So I do need that OTG cable and no need to root it.
Some say the OTG cables work with downloading media importer, others say you need to root to play large files.
I will know in a couple days.
Least I didn't waste money as Google play gave me 25 free bucks.

sorry, I didn't know about Nexus Media Importer.
Anyway the root access allow you to mount the drive as internal memory so you can play with ALL files in the thumb. Through Nexus Media Importer you play via MTP which doesn't allow some kind of files (eg. mkv) which with proper players (eg. mx player) the Nexus can handle. Read the description of that app for further details.
About usb powered hub
basically sth like this. It's needed just if you attach many things or an HDD. it would be good to use it always with more than one peripheral not to load the battery as it's not designed to discharge heavily this way.

I got mine today. I ordered it over a week ago. Weird because I didn't get my shipping information until last night, and when I tracked it, it was already out for delivery.
My Measy Air Mouse R11 is screwed though I think. It keeps sliding to the left hand side. I even tried on my PC and it does the same thing. I've tried to resync it and screw with it, but it keeps moving. Very hard to use a mouse that doesn't stay still. The MK808 is fun. I just got it tonight. I haven't had the time to get really crazy with it. Seems to run ok and would be far more enjoyable with a good input device.
Ordered mine today (only $60), if it really works as reviews say, it's quite a bargain

I fixed my Measy Air Mouse R11.
To reset the Gyros, you lay it flat and press and hold LEFT ARROW + G for a few seconds... making sure it is flat. Now it works great.
I'm having some weird issues with some misbehaving apps. Root explorer started freaking out. And now my FPse won't use OpenGL for the life of me. I'm interested in trying the CM10 build for it but the operation requirements are bland. Supposedly it requires CWM recovery, which is supplied but doesn't give specifics how or what order or process to get it done.
I have to say that it is a fun unit to work with and chews through FPse roms. I'm surprised how well it runs for a chinese chipset.
Flashing is a bit of a chore and instructions aren't very clear, so I'll post them here:
With the unit OFF:
Insert a paper clip into the reset hole and press it in and HOLD IT down.
Awkwardly insert the MicroUSB-PC cable into the OTG. This will power the unit and it should boot into Flash mode given you've held the paperclip down properly.
Trying to install eGalax Touch Screen linux driver
I'm trying to install the eGalax Touch Screen driver for Linux 2.6 that came with my liliput 7 inch touch screen. The touch screen is for use in my car. Using the mk802 II or ug808 to replace my audio system. I just need to get the driver installed. The driver installation script is looking for the locations "usr/local" and "usr/bin", but the only "usr" directory I can find is in "system/usr"... I'm not sure if I should use that location and create the local and bin directories there or not. But when I created the usr/local and usr/bin at the same level as system (which is in the "mnt" directory which is also at the same level as "root" directory (btw, I cannot find a "home" directory), the install seemed to work fine using Better Terminal Pro android app with the bash shell. However, when I restarted the device, the "usr" directory that I create was gone, so the driver install was wiped apparently, and the usb HDMI touch screen still does not work... I can post the bash script if that helps. This is the last thing I need to get this to work, then I can have a full Android ICS system in my car. Thanks in advance.
FYI The HDMI works great to view and use a usb mouse or the RII keyboard. they work great. It's just the touch screen input does not work. It used to when I first turned on the device with the touch screen on, but the x-y coordinates were reversed, hence attempting to install the driver. I have ICS compiled from source and may attempt to add the drivers into it and create an img to them load on the mk802 II, but I fear that I'll loose any proprietary hardware drivers that came with the mk802 II.
I also wanted to make a img backup using ROM Manager, but ClockworkMod is not available for the MK802 II. ANy leads on this would help. Been researching and testing this for a month now.

they shipped on the 29th (tracking never worked).
And it arrived on the 6th. So quicker than expected.

It now seems to play any avi / mkv / mp4 i've given it (usually on a usb stick or micro SD). It happily plays avi's over the network (using ES file explorer).
Its definitely better than the out of sync UG802 which wasn't quite right and the power lead came out too easily.
I use the custom stock video app (seems to come with most of the RockChip devices) and MX player (it looks a lot nicer)

It is a mini PC that has HDMI output. Your TV must have a vacant HDMI input so you can plug the mini PC into it. My TV supports 1080p. And so I can set the output resolution on the mini PC to 1080p. But it also could be set to 720p as well. These don't come with any display so you have to plug it in to your TV or a monitor that supports HDMI. The audio is pushed through the HDMI as well. To control it you can use a USB mouse and/or USB keyboard. Your cheap wireless mouse will work but the USB ports do not have power to them so I've had to use a powered USB hub to make my wireless keyboard work further than a foot away from the USB dongle for the keyboard. The hub also allows you to plug in other devices like a USB camera. But the ones that work are somewhat limited , be aware. Does that help you understand it?

probably you will need the kernel sources. also, you need root access. that error (directories that get lost after reboot) might be due to yo need to remount the /system partition in rw mode (by default is ro) and perhaps you will neet to do some symlinks on /bin to /system/xbin.
other thing you..must get in considwration is that android is different from linux.. and that you might need to compile the kernel module, such thiing im not sure that is posible from within the device itself...
or.. i just might be way off track, in which case jyst dismiss my answer

can anyone comment on this non-support of XBMC for Rockchip? and if not Rockchip, which stick-PC gets it right?
one comment also that I would like more info on is that both iMITO units underperform compared to MK808
"Lack of XBMC support for HD hardware acceleration is a major issue that Rockchip needs to address if they want to keep selling SoC chips to the Stick PC mfgrs. Stick PC makers need 2 take action on this as well and if Rockchip won't play ball, they need to consider alternative SoC. We need more processing power anyway to get close to current smart-phone level and play the latest 3D games."
Hello
I have the following issue. I bought an otg cable and it was able to mount my flash and mouse the first two times. Since then, it only gives a kick start and both my mouse and flash drive are powered down after 3 seconds. I tried them separately. To summarise the problem my nexus 7 does not give enough power to its microusb to be efficiently running an external device or the software recognizes it improperly and shuts it down. The cable works, since its been tried on 2 other devices. Now I wasn't able to find a proper solution to the problem so I'm asking if someone's dealt with such an issue. Running a rooted stock android 4.2.1

You didn't mention which app you are using to be able to mount external storage. It requires Nexus Media Importer (paid app, read/stream only) or the free Stickmount (requires root, provides read/write/streaming). A mouse or keyboard will work without root or either app, but mounting storage requires an external app or a custom kernel with built-in support.
I am using stickmount, and I'm sure it would do its job if I get the devices power for more than 3 seconds

Any new ideas, perhaps a custom kernel ? Any recommendations
Have you tried to see what the app "USB Host Diagnostics" tells you when you try to mount?
It's from the same maker as stickymount, maybe that will give you some better insight at what's happening.
I would include a link but since I'm new on this forum it won't let me yet.

I would include a link but since I'm new on this forum it won't let me yet.

Hello there, yes I have tried it several times, but it could not discover any attached devices, since, as mentioned, the power to the external devices is cut off 3 seconds after the physical insertion. Said devices aren't powered, that's what bugs me. If somehow electricity reaches them, I would be somewhat relieved since the problem would apparently be from the os or software. Right now I cannot get power to the devices, that's why I cannot do any diagnostics. Any ideas on why that might be ?
I would try another OTG-usb cable. Perhaps yours is just enough out of spec it worked at first, but now fails, or it may have been damaged after the first uses. Maybe static shock or it got bent or something. I got one through Amazon delivered to me from Hong Kong for 65 cents (including shipping). It took 17 days to receive, but it works great. I don't know how they can make any money like that, but I'm happy.
