a wifi tethering app that works? - Droid X General

are there any wifi tethering apps that verizon has not blocked? I tried wifi tether and it does not work so are there others?
I want to connect my samsung galaxy tab 10.1 to my droid x when i dont have wifi

Use the barnacle tethering app from the market. It is totally free and I have found that it works better than the wifi tether app. You can also try the wifi tether app 3.2 and then set the device profile to DROID x.
I cannot post links yet so just google wifi tether for root users and the first link should be to a google code website. (I will update with a link soon.)
Use the newest version. And donate to the developers.
(I take no credit)
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

I tried barnacle and it wouldn't connect.
I get errors in the log saying
DHCP: could not bind to DHCP port: Address already in use
and NAT: restart: Network is down
I could not find version 3.2 of wifi tether so i tried 3.1 beta 2 and it takes me to that verizon webpage when I try to go anywhere on my tablet browser

The first link on this google search worked great for me.

I had the same exact problem you are having and got it working by using the files and instructions in the link below. Make sure you uninstall any wireless tether apps you already have installed on your phone. This update installs the newest beta version of Wireless Tether for Root Users for you (this is what you need to use) and disables the Verizon wi-fi app by deleting a file that logs data usage.
I've used it and am still using it just fine.
Good luck.

i have dx running cm7, always works for me. im using v3pre12, but beta is out now

yeee3s!!!!!!!
Finally a way beyond the old froyo method and restarting the phone after every use!!

I've installed this three times now, required me to reload phone 3 times, always same issue.
After tether is done, my menu (all apps) button turns into the "recent" group. I need a menu button that works. While the tether does work perfectly, a recent group in place of my All Apps button doesn't do it for me.
Now reloading my os for the 4th time...anyone else?

[Q] Looking for Proxy app

Hello,
I haven't found anything quite related to what I'm looking for (similar, but involving the GPRS vs WiFi settings)
I'm curious if anyone knows of an app that when you connect to a WiFi network, it will automagically set the proxy server and port required for that WiFi network? One WiFi network I use requires a proxy, but the rest do not. It's annoying to have to change it all the time. It would be great to find an app that when it detects I've connected to the wifi that requires the proxy it figures out which one I'm connected to (either via BSID, ESSID, SSID, MAC etc) and sets the proxy if required. Heck a shell script on a rooted phone could do the setting just fine, but it's the first part I'm stuck with.
Thanks!
I've been looking for an app like this too. My school makes me use a proxy but my home does not and it sucks having to change it every time I go to school or home.
Hey guys can you tell me how to change to the proxy settings. I dont mind switching back and forth but the proxy settings should work. I've my proxy set at 192.168.11.5 and port 3128. How do i use internet with that ?

Hey, so this doesnt do exactly what you want, but its a quick and easy thing. Search the forums, or just google "xda transproxy" I use it now, and the latest beta is very stable. Connects to my schools proxy, and everything works. Or, download orbot from the market..but i personally dont like it, too many steps to do a simple thing. But, to each their own. Anywho, just search and download, and install with your file manager of choice, make sure you set up the port, and ip address before you start the proxy. oh..and on my droid incredible, with virtous 3.1, I had to reboot before I could access the market. Your results may very.

ok so can someone bref me all this please?
I get orbot and enable it THEN I use transproxy???????????
PS: looks like my Sony ericsson kernal locked iptables or whatever (i dont have theme)
ASProxy
I think ASProxy is what you need. For every WiFi network you connect to, you can specify which proxy to use. Besides that, it does NTLM-authentication as well, which is often required in corporate environments.
First I used TransProxy for quite some time, which is great if you only use 1 WiFi network with a proxy (you can use other WiFi networks without the proxy) and don't need NTLM authentication. Then I discovered ASProxy (found a review on android-machines.blogspot.com) which is great, if you need different proxy settings for each WiFi network.

[Q] VPN problems with CM7.1

I'm having with trouble getting VPN to work on my Nook Color, running cm7.1 encore stable. It seems every time I enter my password to connect, the status changes to 'Connecting...' and freezes the nook. Has anyone gotten VPN to work on CM7.1? I'm outside the US so I would like to run VPN to connect to Hulu and Crackler...
Any help on this would be appreciated
BUMP
I'm having the same issue with CM 7.1.0.1 (stable). Like the original poster stated in his post every time I connect to a VPN my Nook Color freezes and I have to do a hard reboot.
I use VPN a lot on my Android devices so it would be great if someone could tell me how I can get it to work on the Nook Color.
If you can use OpenVPN, that works very well for me via the OpenVPN Settings app.

My provider charges extra for OpenVPN so I'm stuck for now trying to get PPTP VPN to work on my NC.
I straight up have the answer for you. DroidVPN is in beta right now, search them on the forums. They will provide you with VPN for free. They require that you email them for a registration code and that's it.
Highly recommended. Quick connection and nice servers. Download and browsing speed mostly equivalent to what I was getting before.
Give them a try. You will need a tun.ko in your system/lib/module folder, but it is built into the kernel. I just bring that up so it doesn't seem to be a stumbling block to anyone looking into the app.

I already have a prepaid subscription to a VPN provider (StrongVPN) which allows me to have an IP address from anywhere in the world. I watch shows on the BBC iPlayer which only streams to UK IPs. I also used this before to watch Netflix while in Europe with a US IP.
This DroidVPN sounds fine for folks that aren't needing international IPs although I don't know how many servers they have and what type of speeds one can expect using them.

[Q] Problems with Tab 7.7's VPN Client

Have anyone tried connecting to VPN servers on their Galaxy Tab 7.7?
I have tested more than 3 VPN servers. (They all work on PC, iPhone, iPad, Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9, HP TouchPad). When I try to connect them on Galaxy Tab 7.7, it connects successfully but fail to let me do anything once the connection is made.
I have created 2 test accounts and please feel free to test it using them or your own servers... let me know how it go...
BTW, I tried restoring. no help at all.

Hi,
for PPTP you'll need kernel 2.6.35.x!
Otherwise you'll be able to get a connection but your data transfer will break down after 5sec-3min!
I will edit this post with a link to "Issue 4706: Droid phone PPTP VPN dying after a short while." after I'm allowed to.

are you saying that i need to upgrade my VPN server to kernel 2.6.35.x just for 7.7? just wondering cos my VPN servers (and many other VPN servers out there that I have tried) work for all other platforms, like Tab 10.1, iPad, Windows, OS X etc etc...
Yes I do. google botched PPTP for VPN.
But you need to upgrade (/downgrade) the kernel of your Android device (client), not the server. Or do you run your VPN server on Android???
You can search for "issue 4706" or "android PPTP VPN problem" and you will find a lot of pi**ed people and maybe some answers like kernel version and needed OS version.
I can confirm that it works with kernel 2.6.35 and since GB2.3.7 / CM7! Some say it works fine with ICS, but I found also that higher kernel versions will not work.
And yes, all other plattforms will work fine with PPTP.

thanks for the info. now for the million dollars question... how do you downgrade the kernel on Android? does this require flashing a new custom ROM? I couldn't really be bothered with custom ROM as I am waiting for the official ICS upgrade notification ... I guess the furtherest I am willing to go is to root my device and install some replacement kernel (if this is even possible)...
I know linux but my main device is an iPad so I am just too lazy to spend too much time backing up / reinstalling the Android for custom ROM... anyway thanks for your time...

Or you try another protocoll like L2TP over IPSec…

L2TP over IPSec was a bit weird too. the server address has to be an internal IP for it to connect, giving it an external IP or domain won't work. God figures! oh well good thing it's not my main device so I won't stress much over it.

You are lucky, my MS2 is my main device and has a locked bootloader and only a 2.6.32 kernel .
I solved the VPN problem by changing to CM7, which wasn't possible for a long time, and using OpenVPN/SSL now.
Lucky me.

I also have the wifi only version, I connect de VPN, works for a while and suddenly stops transfering data althought the connection appears as established. To make it work again i have to disconnect and reconnect.
Just for your info - I got a L2TP VPN connection working just fine on my P6810 Wifi-only Tab. Not sure whether it is just the VPN service (AceVPN) I'm using, or whether I was just lucky.

1 Method to Circumvent T-Mobile Tether/Hotspot

Time for me to update this thread!
For all of the T-Mobile users who are still trying to find a way to circumvent the user agent checking that T-Mobile does while using a third party hotspot app and don't feel like decompiling, editing XMLs, and recompiling, or messing with editing APNs, or ETC... A simple solution that I'm using; use a VPN.
Search the market for: Hotspot Shield
▼ ▼
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hotspotshield.android.vpn&feature=nav_result
▲ ▲
Also DO NOT use the native hotspot, I state this because of all the edits I've tried, the native hotspot still connects to the APN: pcwebs.tmobile.com instead of epc.tmobile.com - Which sniffs out the user agent of your browser and sends you to the upsell page.
If you're on the Galaxy S3 and JB use this app by TrevE
▼ ▼
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
▲ ▲
All others that are capable use Wifi Tether for root users.
▼ ▼
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ
▲ ▲
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 - Start Hotspot Shield. (As of 10/18/2013 If you select to "Restore Purchase" Redeem code is "FREE" it'l give you 30 days of elite service for free!)
2 - Wait for connection to establish and a "key icon" to show up in your statusbar.
3 - Start Wifi Tether for Root Users or TrevE Mod which ever you're using.
4 - Configure wifi tether settings.
[For SGS3 users on JB using WifiTether_TrevE_Mod Version 3.2-Beta2-041713, I've found the best setting to use is as follows:
Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup Method: Auto
Wifi Encryption: Your Preference
SsID: (whatever you wanna use)
Don't disable bluetooth: Checked
Wifi driver reload 2: Checked
Enable Access-Control: Checked
MMS Clamping: Checked
Routing fix: Checked
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 - Tap icon to start tethering.
Once all of the messages stop popping up... Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Optionally:
If you wanna setup your own personal VPN - G.I.Y.F. (Google is your friend) Search for OpenVPN methods. PPTP also works.
Im just a little too lazy to type the instructions. ლ(ಠ益ಠ)ლ

If anyone has an issue where Hotspot Shield is not working on their device and giving you the error message:

It, in my case, is caused by having Xposed Framework installed. The only fix I've found for it was to Titanium Backup my apps, then uninstall the Xposed Framework - requires you to boot into recovery and flash the zip file "Xposed-Disabler-CWM.zip" then you have to Wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik/Fix Permissions, flash your rom again, and restore from TB.

The way a VPN (Virtual Private Network) works is by anonymously masking ALL network traffic to it's destination. I hope my explaination can help those who doesn't understand how a VPN connection work. Here we go:
Normally -
A mobile device connects to service provider monitored internet. In T-Mobile's case, packets are sniffed out that contain any form of user-agent strings, and if the strings report anything other than a mobile device, internet connection is denied and you are redirected to the dreaded "upsell page".
Think of it as water with particles in it passing through sand before reaching the well of water below the sand.
If the water is your network traffic the particles in the water would represent your user agent and the sand is your service provider's filters; not all of the particles will make it through the sand and into the well if they arent small enough to pass through the grains of sand.
Using a VPN is kinda like shoving a tube through the sand and sending your water & particle mixture through the tube directly into the well below. Everything makes it through whether the particles are big or small.
Sorry its late and I probably used a bad analogy. Anywho I hope it made a bit of sense. Lol
I can help you set up your own private VPN. The problem is there's some many different types of routers available for everyone to use. The PPTP type VPN is actually set up through your router. For most people there will be an option to utilize the PPTP port within your router setup screen. Open a web browser, type in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or "routerlogin", the webpage will ask for a username and password. If you changes it, whatever your username and password is. If you didn't, the default username is "admin or administrator" and the default password is usually, "password" dig through the available settings you have and let me know if you have the option to enable anything labeled "PPTP" also let me know which router you have.

yea, so basically, you'd have to setup and only use at one place? is there a solution that will let you tether to any computer anywhere? like is there something you can just setup on the phone? I mean something we can setup as opposed to this 1click vpn which my guess is won't stay free for long.

You actually set up your home network to host you own personal VPN. So no matter where you are, your phone would always use your home network.
Your phone will still use the service provider's data service, however, it would use it only to connect to your VPN at home and then securely reroute that data back to your device. So as all of the data is moved along T-Mobile's servers the data in your VPN cannot be read by tmobile's filtering process.
So one personal vpn server would be all you need. There's an option if you check your "settings -> more settings -> VPN" that will let you use a VPN for all connections on your device. Let me know if there's anything I can clarify.

Just remember the hit on network performance. Your home network is downloading from the net, encrypting it, and uploading it to your device. This assumes you're outside your home network.
Still Charged Up

This is true, its not that bad of a lag for me here in Chicago however, normally my download speeds are between 5-7 Mbps on 4G, with the VPn running I drop to 3-5 Mbps, but I've kinda tweaked the tether apk to start OpenVPN when tethering starts and to disconnect when I turn off tethering. So for the most part I never notice the hit on my speed, I've configured packet compression on my personal VPN server. I'm using a Linksys E4200 on AT&T U-Verse. Thanks for pointing that out for me by the way Reilly, I know I've forgot to list the pros and cons of a vpn, I have a few minutes in my hectic life to hop on xda and make a few quick posts but never enough time to go into detail and proof-read my own posts.

No problem. I was just seeing alot of people asking for a surefire method to bypass the UA check to connect things that you can't simply use a plugin to spoof. So I decided to share how I get by it on the Nationwide Unlimited 4G plan.

I just setup my own VPN server on my Windows Home Server 2011 box last night. I'm now tethering and haven't had any issues yet.
So far, so good. :good:
I have my UA set normally and am on the unlimited plan as well.

Just remember the hit on network performance. Your home network is downloading from the net, encrypting it, and uploading it to your device. This assumes you're outside your home network.

Yes, there is a hit but it's still MUCH faster than the slow wifi at Starbucks.

Lol, originally I started looking for a way to bypass UA checks because I wanted to update my laptop which reports UAs as Internet Explorer through the Windows Update Center, and my Xbox 360 which also reports as IE when connected to Xbox Live. I didn't really need tethering until then. But its a pretty convenient function to have when I'm out and about.
Glad I could help out the other users on T-Mobile, lol I guess as the slogan says, "Stick Together"
Happy tethering everyone.

Hey, thanks for the info. If you're using a VPN it should work with most wifi tether apps though, shouldn't it? I'm on a N4 and CM10.1, which I guess should have about the same tethering app as the stock firmware. Also, it should work with BT tethering, shouldn't it?
Another question, is VPN One Click really free, or is there a catch? My router doesn't seem to have the VPN option you mentioned before, and my home internet appears to be 15mb down, but only 1mb up, which would limit considerably my speed even if I did a personal VPN.

I use Wi-Fi Tether for Root Users and it works fine with VPN.
I tested with the native app, but it doesn't connect to the internet. So that's that.
With Wifi Tether for Root Users, it worked once but in a very flaky way. After that one time, couldn't get it working again. Tried many different profiles, and the one in which I don't get any log errors is forcing the generic one, forcing one of the setup methods. Apparently it doesn't work with the N4, there's another N4 user in the reviews that has problems too. Another very similar app is Open Garden's wifi tether, but it seems to be pretty much the same app as Wifi Tether for root users, has an almost identical interface and options. And of course, also doesn't work. Barnacle is another that doesn't work with the N4. By the way, this is all without even using VPN, so those aren't viable for us with the N4.

Possibly it's because the app hasn't been updated in months and is not playing well with 4.2.1 or having encryption issues with the device

Getting VPN client to work

Hey guys. Got a nexus player a few weeks ago and was able to sideload TorGuard on there. I can enter in my credentials and it authenticates, but when it goes to establish a connection it fails. Does anyone know how to get it to establish? On most recent stock OTA and not rooted. Also the bootloader is still locked.

I just got my NP today and am having the same problem getting TorGuard to run. I got it sideloaded OK and it seems to authenticate fine, but never establishes a connection. Were you able to figure this out? Any assistance would be enormously appreciated.
Thanks!
Vpn
I read a web site that suggested loading openvpn installer and openvpn settings for the fire tv do you think it would work on the nexus player? ??
SOLVED!
You simply need to have TorGuard change your 'username' to something other than an email address --- the email address format (e.g. '@' '.com') screws things up on the Nexus Player. However, if you simply have a traditional 'text' username, everything authenticates fine. Simply contact TorGuard support and they can make this change for you in a couple of minutes.

Is it possible to use other vpns than torguard? ??
If it runs on 5.1.1 or 6 it should work for Us

Since we're running either v5.1.1 or Android v6, any VPN client certified for either Android system should run on our Nexus Players.
I have a torGuard account and only have experience with that, so far.
Torguard vpn
Ok so I can connect with the vpn but when I exit the app and try a to watch a tv app from the same country as vpn connection it doesn't work. When I go back to the vpn app it says that it is initializing and a new ip address appears. Any ideas? ??
I have this same issue ... the TV app I am trying to load is Netflix and it says it cannot find the netflix servers or connection... Can't seem to find a fix but the TorGuard support are pretty good and helping me at the moment will let you know if a fix is found ... Unless you have a fix already?
I just order a Nexus player hopefully private Internet access works
