[Q] Where is my Drive Mount app located? - Acer Iconia A500

I can run my "Drive Mount" app which allows me to have a usb connection to my Seagate hard drive. I can find "Drive Mount" when using Titanium to backup apps. I can find "Drive Mount" listed in various file management apps.
BUT, I can't find where "Drive Mount" is actually located. I'd be happy to receive info. which lets me find it.
ooorah

In your file manager app, you should be able to see the root of the device. You should see a directory named /mnt/usb_storage. That is where your drive will be mounted. Some have reported that the Iconia cannot see drives formatted in NTFS, and this may be why the device is not seeing your Seagate hard disk. I have yet to test this out personally as I just got my Iconia a couple days ago.
BTW, I've used both Ghost commander and ES File Explorer successfully on the A500.

rasmith3530, thanks for the reply. I can see the seagate files just great. My problem is I can't find the actual drive mount app anywhere.
ooorah

I downloaded it from the store and it was listed under apps on my a5.

Please clearify
are you looking for the built in app that allows you tobsee external drives
are you looking for the. Apt that is for sale on the market
The first of the ttwo as far as I know are built into the is and there is nothing to find or see unless you are a Dec. Hope this helps

Mounting my EVO

Wonder how many people clicked that expecting something dirty....haha
I want to mount my EVO as a drive letter in Windows. I have tried the freeware ftpdrive and netdrive to no avail. I am not sure what the issue is...
I have been able to map it as a network drive through the windows explorer but it fails to give it a drive letter which I need for what I am trying to do. I have some music syncing software I am trying to use with my EVO but it will only work if it has an actual drive letter.
I could just plug it in, but I wanted to see if I could do it this way.
Is there something that I am missing?
Maybe it has something to do with Android?

install an ftp server or samba server on the phone then connect over wifi then mount the ftp/samba as a drive in windows. To my knowledge you can't mount a bluetooth ftp as a drive

Yeah I tried doing this through FTPserver in the app store, and also another one that I can't remember. I was able to connect to the phone and view all of the files, but not actually mount it to a drive letter.
The reason I need to mount is because I have playlists that I have set to auto sync when the device is detected as mounted. It won't work just in FTP however

I think I have figured it out. The system will mount it as a pseudo drive, but not assign it a true drive letter and that is that.
I will just have to come up with a better system for syncing my playlists.

Two options for you
Samba server - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653336
or
SSH server that supports SFTP http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/quicksshd_gjvk.html and use something like http://www.expandrive.com/windows to mount it.
If you can mount the share in explorer, you should be able to go to Tools -> Map Network Drive, pick a drive letter, and put in the path to the share and be good to go.
And another option...
This app lets you explore the entire phones internal storage as folders just like windows explorer, just press the explore button at the top of the open app window.
Very cool stuff!!
The only downside I've found so far is it's impossible to scroll the app drawer without adding a program to your homescreen

Yes, You CAN See the External SD Card!

I've been playing around for a while with how to access the micro SD card and I finally found an app that let's you do it.
It's called "Wireless File Transfer" by Nivue and it's in the Market. Basically you get the entire file systrem of your Iconia tab as shown below
Index of xxftp://10.0.XX:2xxx/mnt/xx
Up to higher level directory
Name Size Last Modified
sdcard 5/23/2011 6:18:00 PM
external_sd 12/31/2010 7:00:00 PM
usb_storage 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
secure 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
asec 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
obb 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
It allows you to set up a password-protected ftp server with access to practically everything on the Iconia.
Kudos to the developer - it's free in the market!
nice find...........
The question is, how do you navigate to you network shares via the A500?

I think (at least in Windoze) that you just view the devices on your network and open those that you are interested in. I'm using it more as a means to transfer files TO the Iconia and/or dump stuff from the Iconia to my PC.
I can see the file structure of the tab in Windows Explorer under the network folder

File Manager HD lets you assign names to network shares so you don't have to search for them each time. You would swear the a500 is just another Windows box on the network.
It also works great with external SD and USB Drives. You can create bookmarks to each drive, also.
Free in the market. People like it so much they are begging for a paid version so they can get rid of ads (which are really unobtrusive however)
TRY IT, you'll like it !
I stumbled on a proggy called AndSMB works the same but much easier to setup, for me anyways....

Probably a stupid question, but is there a file manager?

Just decided and bought a 32G A500 but..
I can't seem to find a file manager on it.
How do you navigate to the mSD card to install more app apk's?
I installed a file browser from Market, Ghost Commander. Actually I'm not sure you can install apks from there. But there are other file browsers out there.
The external microSD card is found at /mnt/external_SD wheras the internal memory is mounted at /mnt/sdcard, which is sort of confusing.
Good luck!
^^
Bjorn
So, it DOESN'T come with one?
Did no one at Acer think that might be a glaring oversight?
I have a couple of bought ones backed up on mSD - I'd like to use them, but first I have to install a free one, then install the bought ones, then remove the free one? WOW..
(They were bought under a different account to by A500 account)
Ok, I can live with that, a little backwards though!
There might have been one installed from the box, but I never looked for it.

Tried a lot of file managers, my absolute fav is 'File Manager HD' free designed for honeycomb!
You can book mark folders for easy nav and ip access to your PC hard drive also bookmarkable, although you might want to set a static IP on your PC as it does change it automatically every now and then if not static...
Network access to PC is in settings top right corner of ap.
Hope this helps.

Hi Bjorn,
yes it is possible:
Left hand side click System icon,
Top right corner click the UP arrow,
Click mnt folder,
Click external_sd
OR before going into external_sd folder, long press it and you have your shortcut/bookmark made.
Hope this helps...

If you install filemanager hd and tap 'storage' on the left hand side and keep going 'up' on the green arrow along the top menu, you will eventually get to a directory which includes usb_storage (usb stick), external_sd (your inserted sd card) and sdcard (the Iconia internal memory).
Hope this helps, btw, filemanager hd is very similar to Astro, but looks waaaay better.

'mnt' folder must be accessed
And yes I agree with you it does look really good and easy to navigate as you get used to what it can do on setting it up right. Although I always have to keep trusty Root Explorer handy for Root control, but I am sure it's just a matter of time that HD can do this too.
It seems silly but also pretty much traditional that Android devices don't come with a file manager preinstalled. No idea why the Android team @ Google doesn't go ahead and put together a barebones version to be included on all devices, not like people aren't still going to install Astro or ES or File Manager HD if they want it.
Or, I dunno, device makers could come up with one instead of a gazillion different apps and widgets to give you your Facebook feed ...

YES to that last comment.
My Archos 101 has abasic file manager and a basic browser, from new.
My A500 has basic broswer, no file manager, and (OK, exaggerated) 1000 facebook/twitter apps. (And they all want to run from start-up!!)
Yeah, I know, there's not 1000, it just feels like it.
OMG thank you for this one! Cannot believe there wasn't a stock one...but I'm totally loving this one!

Would there ever be a way to format an external hdd on this tablet?

Hi everyone,
I was using my Samsung mini usb drive on my Android Tablet (Honeycomb 3.2.1) and the drive stopped working on my pc. Every time it now I get a BSOD, but it still connects to my tablet just fine. I was using ES File explorer, transferring a movie when this problem first occurred.
So far, I have found no mention of being able to hack the tablet to support mass storage (assigning a drive letter) and I can find no other way to format. I was actually hoping I could find an app on the market, but one such as this doesn't exist.
Please help me being back the full functionality of my external drive, guys!
Btw, the external drive is now formatted to General Hierarchical, like the tablet itself.
Thanks so much!

Distrowatch.com download a Linux distro perhaps Gparted or what ever run on live disc then do what you need till android incorporated this feature
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
AFAIK these Samsung drives use an unusual block size. I have the S1 with 120gig that could not run on my Nintendo Wii. These drives can be troublesome especially on XP. There is a special tool from Samsung for formatting.
But a recent version of GParted will do also. But after formatting it will still use this special block size. There is no way to get rid of it.
BTW: Your post fits better in the Q&A section. It is not development related.

Ok dincdoes.me and se_ebel_portolkyz, thanks for the replies.
I thought of posting this in Q&A, but I thought it was more technical in nature than "how do you do this?" or "how do you hack the battery icon?" or whatever is usually in that section.
It's funny se_ebel_portolkyz, I have a Wii as well, and my drive is the S1 mini, 250GB and it wouldn't work on the Wii. I'll try the tools you guys recommended, but the Acer shows up as an external device with no drive letter and then the Samsung shows up inside that, so I'm not sure how I'm going to get access to it to format it. :/
I'll continue to work on this problem though and again, thanks.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I had a drive just like yours and it also died (it began pretty much like yours) . Last s#it for Samsung I'll ever buy...

Have you tried cracking open the case and removing the drive and directly plugging it into your PC motherboard.
No, I haven't.

[Q] Trying to get external storage to work

Hi,
I am so close to getting this setup how I wanted - it's frustrating...
I have a nexus player - loaded kodi, side loaded NHL network, side loaded Amazon app - all that is working. I attach a 4TB USB drive (formatted fat32) and although ES file explorer can see it and Kodi can use it, I cannot get move to SD working...
I rooted it, I have super user working, I installed stickmount and ran that and tried using folder mount with no luck.
The external drive almost looks like it shows up as 2 drives...
When I unplugged the drive Kodi somehow cannot see it anymore when plugged back into the hub.
I want to be able to load this stuff up because this setup is getting taken to a camper where the only internet will be my phone as a wifi hot spot but I don't want to burn a ton of data - I want to use play later to add to the collection up there by just transferring new files on a USB stick, also use that to sideload any APK's up there.
Right now the unit itself was so full I cannot install anything more so I was looking for an app2sd option like my phone and used the (root, su, stickmount, foldermount way I read in several places).
I had to uninstall things just to install foldermount but if there are menu's on that I cannot access them so I can get to createpair screen and navigate to the place where you would populate destination, but once at that screen - there is no way I can see to save that - just has up (go back)... so I am totally stuck - been at it for hours - about to just take it back and build a small htpc but I really liked the idea of such a small device with the limited space I have at the camper.
I admit I do not have a good understanding of how Android deals with it's file structure and mounting drives / volumes.
Is what I am trying to do possible or am I asking for to much?
I discribed the only way i found that works here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61584727&postcount=158
Without the ability to install on an external location i think the nexus player is worthless.
Almost every good game is almost 2 GB shame on you google ......
8GB for a TV box is way too little without an external SD card !!!
I tried your way numerous times but it doesn't mount the 2nd partition, sometimes it doesn't see the 2nd partition, (intermittent) ...any ideas?
