Probably a stupid question, but is there a file manager? - Acer Iconia A500

Just decided and bought a 32G A500 but..
I can't seem to find a file manager on it.
How do you navigate to the mSD card to install more app apk's?

I installed a file browser from Market, Ghost Commander. Actually I'm not sure you can install apks from there. But there are other file browsers out there.
The external microSD card is found at /mnt/external_SD wheras the internal memory is mounted at /mnt/sdcard, which is sort of confusing.
Good luck!
^^

So, it DOESN'T come with one?
Did no one at Acer think that might be a glaring oversight?
I have a couple of bought ones backed up on mSD - I'd like to use them, but first I have to install a free one, then install the bought ones, then remove the free one? WOW..
(They were bought under a different account to by A500 account)
Ok, I can live with that, a little backwards though!

There might have been one installed from the box, but I never looked for it.

Tried a lot of file managers, my absolute fav is 'File Manager HD' free designed for honeycomb!
You can book mark folders for easy nav and ip access to your PC hard drive also bookmarkable, although you might want to set a static IP on your PC as it does change it automatically every now and then if not static...
Network access to PC is in settings top right corner of ap.
Hope this helps.

Hi Bjorn,
yes it is possible:
Left hand side click System icon,
Top right corner click the UP arrow,
Click mnt folder,
Click external_sd
OR before going into external_sd folder, long press it and you have your shortcut/bookmark made.
Hope this helps...

If you install filemanager hd and tap 'storage' on the left hand side and keep going 'up' on the green arrow along the top menu, you will eventually get to a directory which includes usb_storage (usb stick), external_sd (your inserted sd card) and sdcard (the Iconia internal memory).
Hope this helps, btw, filemanager hd is very similar to Astro, but looks waaaay better.

'mnt' folder must be accessed
And yes I agree with you it does look really good and easy to navigate as you get used to what it can do on setting it up right. Although I always have to keep trusty Root Explorer handy for Root control, but I am sure it's just a matter of time that HD can do this too.

It seems silly but also pretty much traditional that Android devices don't come with a file manager preinstalled. No idea why the Android team @ Google doesn't go ahead and put together a barebones version to be included on all devices, not like people aren't still going to install Astro or ES or File Manager HD if they want it.
Or, I dunno, device makers could come up with one instead of a gazillion different apps and widgets to give you your Facebook feed ...

YES to that last comment.
My Archos 101 has abasic file manager and a basic browser, from new.
My A500 has basic broswer, no file manager, and (OK, exaggerated) 1000 facebook/twitter apps. (And they all want to run from start-up!!)
Yeah, I know, there's not 1000, it just feels like it.

OMG thank you for this one! Cannot believe there wasn't a stock one...but I'm totally loving this one!

Change your USB Icon

I found a nifty little program that will change the icon your device displays when connected as USB Mass storage.
You just have to find a corresponding .ico file
Heres the program: SevenDriveIconChanger
http://www.mediafire.com/?mmkzmmt5tug
And attached is a Nexus One Windows icon and the 7changer app in a zip
You need an *.ico-file to use the IconChanger, I converted it and attached it in the ZIP-archive for maximum enjoyment.
Iconchanger? I just have an autorun.inf on the root of my SD card pointing to an icon.

Dammit, beat me to it!
Code:
[autorun]
icon=x.ico
Save as autorun.ini in /sdcard/ along with x.ico, job done.
The autorun.ini doesnt work for me.

You didn't save it as autorun.ini.txt did you?
Oh, and you have to have autorun enabled...
Edit: Also, try calling it "autorun.inf" (no quotes). Should do essentially the same thing.

Nail. Head.
It should be called autorun.inf, I made a typo
I haven't renamed it with .txt. I don't like using autorun for any kind of storage i insert into my PC so i set it to be off.
Maybe that's why it doesn't work. A Nexus One icon is not worth turning it back on.
Another option (Windows only) is USBDLM. With it you can configure icon, pre-assigned drive letter, drive/device label (as shown in explorer), and a raft load of other choices. It can run as a service and has x64 support, but requires direct editing of the .ini file (and manual installation if I remember correctly).
For example: On my desktop and notebook - Nexus One is always [N:], G1 is always [G:], backup drive is always [B:] (all with custom icons), regardless of which USB port I plug in to or what else is plugged in (those letters are never assigned to other devices).
It takes a bit of time investment up front, but is well worth it if you either need or want more configuration options for your external storage.

Wow, I haven't had a drive B in a long time. But not nearly as long as a drive A. I'd probably be a little freaked out if I set up a system like yours

It took some getting used to, but now that it's habit I actually get kinda freaked if I'm backing up to (or restoring from) something other than B:
DVD-RW=X:, Daemon-Tools=Y:, DVD-ROM=Z:
Always have to double take on other people's Windows boxes when looking for optical media. My system is definitely mine.

Where is the ringtone directory?

Where are the ringtones (stock) located at? There are a few in there that I have but my wife doesn't and she wants it. I have a custom rom but I imagine the directory location is the same.
System/media/audio/ringtones

as you might already know, you can also add a folder on your sdcard (same directory naming as above, but replace system with sdcard) and it'll register those as well-- easier to add and remove regardless of rom switching.
Is Google down?
Looks like it's back up now.
digging up an old thread since my question is related: When i go to choose a ringtone(say for instance in text messages) it brings up some ringtones that are no longer on my phone that i know of. they were installed from zedge which i dont use anymore. I dont see these particular files when browsing System/media/audio/ringtones nor are they on the sdcard. How can i clean this up?
Thanks.

Access to external SD card

I usually put some files (e.g., PDFs) in the extra SD card, and open them through ASTRO. However, that would take five or six presses to reach a file. So is there a better way (a widget on the home screen, for example) to quickly access the folder? If not, what would be a better place other than the external card to store such files? Thanks in advance!

1. Get an app called Linda File Manager
2. Open it up and navigate to the folder/file that has the pdf file you're looking to link to.
3. Long press on that file [or folder]
4. Select on create shortcut.
Now go to your home screen and you should see your newly created shortcut. If it is in fact a .pdf, when you press it you'll get 1 or 2 options to open it. Think Free Open Office is the solution that comes with the phone, however Adobe has Acrobat Reader available for free on the market.
Good luck, let me know how it works.
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. And it seems I can create a link/shortcut for a folder too... Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help...
This can be done with astro file manager as well.

[Q] external sd card general questions

hi, i've just got my iconia and I am also new on the Android world. A couple of things I've noticed about the external SD card that maybe somebody could help me to understand.
1.- when I hook my tablet to my windows 7 laptop, I get to see the internal memory on the win explorer but not the external card, so is this normal or do I have to look for more updated drivers on my PC?
2.- with the external SD card on I get to see my files on an android file manager and I get to open any file individually by getting the "select app for opening this file", but this is time consuming so I am wondering if my stock lumiread, gallery, multimedia player have the current limitation of only reading the content from the internal memory. If so, what free alternatives do I have to replace stock apps?
A couple of answers
First, if you install File Manager HD, you won't need to tether your Iconia to your laptop any more. In the app, open the 'menu' and touch 'LAN Connections'. Your Windows PC will show up as an IP address. Make sure to change the IP Address to a computer name (long press, rename) so that next time File Manager won't have to search for it every time. You will be able to transfer anything on the tab to the 'Public' folder on the PC, and vice versa. Depending on what folders are shared on the PC, you will be able to access more on the PC.
I keep my music on my external SD card in a folder named 'My Music'. The stock music/multimedia players found them with no problem.
I haven't tried moving any books for Lumiread to the external SD card, so all I can suggest is to look at the file structure and duplicate it on the ext SD card, copy a book into it (a new one, or move an existing one) and see if it finds it. I don't see anything within the app to set search/storage directories, but maybe it will scan everything like the music apps do.
Have fun with you new Tab. The more you play with it the more you will understand Honeycomb and it won't seem so foreign to you. It does pretty much everything every other OS does, just a little different way.
Kp
Thanks Ken, I downloaded FMHD and will try it soon. I also though about reproducing the lumiread folder on the ext sd card but no luck, so probably a future update on the app will fix that. I tried this as well copying the pictures folder (and also renaming it as 'My Pictures') but the stock gallery just won't see the image files, is there any chance you could see if you get the same results? I have not tried yet on the music stock app. Again, thanks for your help, it is great to find nice people on the web with similar tech passions as I do
Hello Ken, like that app. Wondering if it would be an easy way to tether to my HTC Evo? Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

I use Quickpic from the Market (free) since it lets you choose which drives/directories to scan.
Here is what you do.
1. Create the My Pics directory on the External SD card with File Manager HD, put a few pics in it.
2. After installing Quickpic, start the app. It will display everything it finds on the internal SD Card.
3. Touch the Menu button from the main screen.
4. Choose SETTINGS-INCLUDED FOLDERS-ADD
5. Tap the double dots at the top of the list, it will display all the memory devices attached.
6. Tap EXTERNAL_SD. All directories on the card will be displayed. Press OK.
Now press the 'back' button and you will see your pics that are anywhere on the External SD card.
All I did to get the A500 music player to find the music on the External SD card was run the NemoPlayer app and open the music. Once I did that the regular music app found them, too.
Have fun!

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think so. From what I have seen and heard so far it is only connecting to Windows shares. I don't have an Android phone to test with, so can't swear to it, but I know it doesn't see an iPhone, so likely won't see a Mac either.
Anyone else been able to connect to anything but a Windows share? Let us know if you have, and what app you used please.

Lack of file manager has been a trend in general; I don't think you can even get one on Windows Phone unless you unlock.
Solid Explorer
At first I thought I was just missing something when I couldn't find the explorer. It became essential when some videos I bought over didn't show up in the download folder, so I installed AntTek Explorer. Seriously, ANYTHING would have been better than nothing. I understand not always needing it, but it's good to have the option. At least we can download one easily enough, so it's fine.
Nexus7 2012 Help pls
I've used Motorola for the past 2 years and am able to connect via USN to my Win7/64 bit system with ABSOLUTE EASE.
I am dumbfounded because I am NOT able to view NEXUS files/directories on my PC.'
When I connect the USB- I only see DCIM and Camera. (If I selected Camera MTP).
If I selected media Device which is the default, I see nothing in PC File Manager.
This is very disappointing because I'd really like to see files on the PC, because typing and moving and renaming is so much easier.
Yes, I know I can see files using Android File explorer, etc.
I am preparing to root my phone, as I did the Razr, and wanted to back up files using Helium (old Carbon), until I get it rooted and can use my paid for Titanium Pro.' --- So, where the devil will the backups be stored? Going back and forth between tablet and PC is odd to say the least.
I thought Nexus was the bomb for allowing users to totally manage their devices. Guess u have to have tiny fingers, great eyes, and LOTS OF Patience!
Any help or comments is very much appreciated.
