[Q] Appmanager uninstall - Android Software Development

I know there are hundreds of app managers for root users out there and there is definitely not room for another one. I am however putting one together just to learn some more about coding for Android and my lack of imagination has me writing an app manager
I've gotten stuck at uninstalling an app. The way I'd like to do it is to launch the system's uninstall process. I can't find a way to do this however. Another way I've thought about doing it is with RootTools.sendShell().
I've tried sending in "pm uninstall package_name" and that doesn't work. I then tried sending:
String[] commands = {
"mount -o rw,remount /data",
"rm -f " + sourceDir,
"pm uninstall " + packageName
};
Click to collapse
And that didn't work either.
So that leaves me here, asking you if you know either why my approach with RootTools doesn't work and how I could fix it or if you know how to launch (if even possible) the systems uninstaller. If you know of any other way to uninstall an app I'd love to hear that as well.

There is an Intent to launch the package uninstaller. And since the uninstaller is a "system app" and at the very least in an entirely different package from your app an intent would be the only way to communicate with it

From something awesome

Thanks! Works flawlessly!

Can't delete Apps (A2SD)

Hi,
Ive got a problem. Yesterday i did the update from Dude 1.1 to 1.2, first without wiping, but then the G1 reboot when i want to download an app.
So i wiped it and it works fine. INternal Memory is 355MB free.
Today i wanna delete the APP SMS/MMS because i use chompSMS, but the G1 says that it cant delete. ("Uninstall not successful" "SMS/MMS could not be uninstalled")
So what could i do?
Thanx for ya help
if im not wrong in saying this, the stock sms mms program needs to be on the phone. chomp doesnt get your messages
it gets them from the stock messaging app.
Not sure what you're trying to uninstall (haven't heard of an app called SMS/MMS). However, if you're trying to remove the application "Messaging", you can't. Just disable notifications in the Messaging program and use chomp as the default.
Its the same with this Amazon Mp3 app, i cant uninstall it, what do i wrong? Or how can i get this app off my phone( dude 1.2 full)
You can't uninstall those programs..

If you are using a G1 build, its in /system/app. Remount the system partition and delete it from that directory.
Yeah great, thanx for ya help.
But now I now i'll gonna be beaten for that question, but can you explain me what you mean with 'remount the system partition"?
I've looked it up with ASTRO Filemanager and its really in /system/app, but i cant delete it from there, if i want to it says again "error deleting file".
Just searched a bit around and found the remount command that i know from a2sd, so i think i have to go to Terminal at G1,
#su
#mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#rm com.amazon.mp3 /system/app
Is this right? So then i'm gonna eating my shoes But i think it isnt so i ask you before i delete complete G1
Or is it enough to remount with that command above and then go with ASTRO FIlemanager to that directory and delete it?

Yes, you remount it that way (or with DroidSans) and rm the Amazon file. I would still recommend against deleting the messaging one though.
I tried it this way, but it says error "Read only file".
I think i just let it on the phone and try to ignore that app.

use this code to remove amazon
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm -r /system/app/com.amazon.mp3
that will remove amazon but removing messaging will make your system EXTREMELY unstable and most likely unusable
The problem was that i don't add the Fileending ".apk"
Thanx for ya help, tubaking182. It worked with your Command with adding .apk
Got the next problem, now i want to delete the Messenger App 'IM' but even if i do the same with 'amazon mp3' it says rm: cannot remove '/system/app/com.android.im.apk': No such file or directory
So what i am doing wrong, i tried it with "rm -r /system/app/com.android.im.apk"
"rm -r /system/app/com.android.im"
And many more but i get ever the same output -> No such file...
That means theres no such file...doesn't exist.
IT might be named IM.apk
Mh you're right!
I dont know how it tells me 'com.android.im' in ASTRO Filebrowser, and why i could delete it with IM.apk
With AmazonMP3 i have also to write: com.amazon.mp3.apk
Doesn't matter, THANK YOU for the fast help
amazon
spend a couple bucks and get root explorer, it is well worth it, and then its very easy to delete anything after that.
Wait wait let me get this right ... with root explorer i could avoid the whole going to terminal and typing all that code and just simply delete the apk from root explorer program and thats it >?
Can it really be that easy ... tell me thats the case
Also when you use the terminal code or the root explorer method ( if it can be done like that) when you go to applications in the phone menu to view list of apps you still see the amazon mp3 app in the system .. how do i remove that also

How to fix market download "freezes"

I think I've found the cause of this, where you download something from the Market and it says downloaded but just sits there forever. Google has something called a "checkin" service that sends them anonymous usage data, bug reports, crash logs, etc, but it fails a lot. When you download something from the Market, it sends a message to Google about it, and if it fails it just freezes.
You can turn this off easily with a system property. I haven't seen any issues with doing this except that it will break the setup wizard if you have this set during boot after a wipe.
All you need to do is add this line to the end of /system/build.prop:
Code:
ro.config.nocheckin=1
So, something like this:
Code:
adb pull /system/build.prop .
(edit file with notepad, vim, emacs if you hate yourself)
adb remount
adb push build.prop /system
adb shell reboot
Hopefully this helps someone and Google doesn't shoot me down from space
build.prop reverts after reboot
hey
followed instructions
- pulled build.prop
- added ro.config.nocheckin=1 to end
- adb remount (RW filesystem)
- pushed new build.prop, says 2593 bytes written
- rebooted device
upon reboot: /system/build.prop reverts back to original
any idea for a Rogers Dream user here
Just wanted to clarify that the steps should actually be:
Code:
adb remount
adb pull /system/build.prop .
*(edit file with notepad, vim, emacs, whatever)*
adb push build.prop /system
adb shell reboot
Otherwise, people are going to reboot their computers willy-nilly, and not their androids.

Thanks alot! What would be the "Undo" to this incase one day I need to wipe/flash a rom?
edit: seems to still "hang" and not work. Only works if I log into "gtalk"
After having completed this procedure, I've still managed to "hang" the market once. Though in all fairness, once is fine, because it used to happed daily.
However, I've noticed something that some people might consider a "down side" - when you uninstall apps, they remain in your downloads. That's exactly the same behavior that people were complaining about before cupcake came out.
besides anonymous usage data, bug reports and crash logs, what else would i be disabling by doing this?

Well, as I've mentioned in my post above yours, all apps that you ever downloaded while having check-in disable, will stay in your My Downloads. Again, it doesn't bug me as I use aTrackDog primarily for update checks, but I know some people don't like this.
Have you tried clearing the market cache in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Market? I'm curious to know if that assist with that at all.

I haven't, but I'll try. Though I am quite sure it will not do anything because that list remains the same through flashes and upgrades, so I'm sure it's pulled from Google servers.
my solution......
Whenever the market hangs when I download [email protected] reboot and it works fine. I don't get the hang problem a lot so it doesn't bother me to reboot.

It's not only about Market hanging. After disabling check-in, Market actually works much faster because data does not get sent to Google every time you do something (download / remove / update / etc.)
Would there be a way to schedule this checkin? Or make it run only once every x times? That might bridge the difference between no hangs and retaining all past downloads, and many hangs but clearing the downloads list.

The framework could be modded for that, but thats a lot of work. Right now, the checkin code is a listener, and just wakes up for certain events (like an app install).
I THINK this could happen if one changes or deletes the APN of the phone.. for me it started to freeze the download after I completely closed the 3g/2g connection. So maybe google uses that connection in order to gether the data instead of the wifi. Can that be changed so that both use the wifi?
script to disable checkin service:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
su
if ! grep -q "^ro.config.nocheckin=" /system/build.prop; then
echo "Mounting system as read/write"
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
echo "Disabling Checkinservice"
echo "ro.config.nocheckin=1" >> /system/build.prop
echo "rebooting.."
reboot
else
echo "CheckinService already disabled"
fi

I disassembled the classes.dex from the checkin.apk with baksmali and in the CheckinService.smali these fields are defined:
Code:
.field private static final CHECKIN_INTERVAL:J = 0x6ddd00L
.field private static final CHECKIN_INTERVAL_MAX:J = 0xa4cb800L
.field private static final CHECKIN_INTERVAL_MIN:J = 0x927c0L
Values in decimal(dont take the last character for conversion!). I think they should represent milliseconds:
0x6ddd00L: 7200000
0xa4cb800L: 172800000
0x927c0L: 600000
Maybe you can "schedule" the checkin service by changing these values, assemble the dex again with smali, replace the original classes.dex in the apk and push it back to the Phone.
Code:
adb remount
adb pull /system/app/checkin.apk .
Make a backup copy of the apk ;)
extract the classes.dex
java -jar -Xmx512m baksmali-0.94.jar -o ./checkin classes.dex
Edit the File
java -jar -Xmx512m smali-0.94.jar -o classes.dex ./checkin
Replace the classes dex in the pulled checkin.apk
adb push checkin.apk /system/app/checkin.apk
adb shell reboot
You can get smali and baksmali from here:
http://code.google.com/p/smali/
I was talking about the explicit checkin that happens after apps are installed, etc..

Apks safe to uninstall on Liberated FR series ROM?

I need to uninstall as many apks as I can from my phones memory and download them off of market and install on my sd card to free up memory. My phone memory is pretty full and seems to be causing it to lag.... What are the safe ones and unsafe ones to remove?

If you can find the app in the market then its safe to remove. If its in the market that makes it optional. However removing google apps can have adverse affects on other google apps, but your phone will still continue to function just fine, and most if not all the google apps can be found in the market (with the exception of the market itself, dont remove that!). Apps such as the music app and clock apps can be replaced entirely by market apps. Preinstalled wallpapers can also be removed from the rom. Another thing i remove is any ringtones I dont think I"ll need. I dont know about liberated, but cm6 has WAY more ringtones than I need/want, so I just delete em. I also now remove the boot animation from the ROM before installing it to save a few MB. You just get a black screen where the bootanimation would normally show up until the phone boots.
Whats the easiest way to remove files? Ive tried to use Root Explorer and Titanium Backup but they show back up when I restart... Im hoping there is an easier way to remove than adb.....????

adb is pretty easy actually. Search the forums for making a cmd shortcut for adb, or if someone remembers how they could post it (this will make life infinitely easier). Then you just boot into recovery and plug in the phone, type the following without the apostrophes:
'adb shell' hit enter.
'cd /system/app' enter.
'ls' enter. (this will pop up a list of the apps you have)
'rm name of app.apk' and its gone forever.
Just keep repeating that last step for every app you want removed.
Can i do this via Terminal Emulator?
yes but the command is different...id give it if i knew it...

Im having a hell of a time removing apps from my Liberated Aria. I have installed ADB and the necessary software. I am able to get into CMD and get a listing of files (apk's), but they do not remove... what commands do I need to use?
Ive tried
rm /youtube.apk
rm /system/youtube.apk
rm /system/app/youtube.apk
They are still there... maybe Im not mounting the drive? Or its not in Read/Write mode?

make sure your bored into clockwork recovery. Then go to partitions and mount system. then just follow those same directions I posted above. To remove the app you would type:
rm youtube.apk
Exactly like that, with a space after rm and no /.
hm...
Some times I use SystemApp Remover.
Its pretty easy to work.

[Q] busybox throwing "precmd" errors after rooting ICS

Hello,
Thanks for looking at this post! I wanted to post it to the rooting thread, but I'm too much of a noob to have access to developer threads. I searched around (both here and google), but couldn't find any useful info on my problem.
I'll get right to the point. I rooted my Acer A500 (after doing an OTA update to 4.0.3), as per the instructions on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
Everything seems to have worked well (I have root access, etc), but there is something quirky with Busybox. Every time I type a command in terminal (it doesn't matter which - I use both connectbot and terminal emulator), I get a "precmd: not found" message (even for simple things like directory changes). The odd thing is: the commands work, but I still get the message. For instance, if I ask for a directory listing, I'll get the listing, and at the end, it will say precmd: not found (usually with the name of the command it's referencing, e.g. bash: precmd: not found).
It seems to be looking for it in /system/xbin/bash, but bash is in /data/local; I tried creating a symlink but it didn't work ("link failed Cross-device link"). This is really a nuisance, and I'd like to try installing some linux user-land tools, but I fear the outcome might be disastrous if the busybox tools are misconfigured somehow.
I'd appreciate and help/suggestions. Many thanks.

Connectbot seems to set shell variable 'PS1' to "$(precmd)[email protected]$HOSTNAME:${PWD:-?} $ ".
It means your shell (the busybox's ash applet) will try to use output from 'precmd' as a part of a command prompt.
So when 'precmd' was not provided, error messages will be generated wenever a prompt was to be shown.
Though the messages should be safe to ignore, you may get rid of them by setting something harmless to PS1 like:
PS1="> ", or reset PS1 by:
unset PS1from your (busybox) shell.
# The same method should work for terminal emulator.
precmd is a shell function.
To display it run this from the default shell:
Code:
typeset -f
You will see something like
Code:
function precmd {
typeset e=$?
let " e " && print -n "$e|"
}
If you add that to one of your shell's startup files (".profile", ".bashrc", etc.) you will have a working precmd.
It works (function runs), but shows nothing neither 0 or error code. What is it?

Removing ads on 5.1.1

I have found a way to remove ads on 5.1.1, it is exactly the same way as 5.0.1 except you NEED root for it to work.
Type in the following commands in a command prompt. Be sure USB debugging is on and it is securely connected to your computer. Although you do type reboot as the last command, the tablet turns off, just press the power button . This was successful on two of my tablets.
Code:
adb shell
su
At this point grant superuser access from the tablet
Code:
pm hide com.amazon.kindle.kso
exit
reboot
In theory this should work from a terminal emulator straight on your tablet but I have not tried it out
EDIT:
I should have explained the process better as some people are getting confused.
1. Make sure you have the correct drivers and USB debugging turned on your tablet.
2. Download this one click tool to gain root access if you have not done so already. Make sure to disable OTA updates from the tool as well (not necessary for removing ads but will be useful in the future).
3. Open a command window on your computer and type the commands above. If you have root you should get a
Code:
#
symbol after typing the su command.
Hello, it's my first post here so I apologize if the question is basic - I went thru all of the steps in other fourms last night and got Google Play to install just fine and even temporarily I appear to get the lock ads to remove but at best that doesn't seem to last past a reboot. After some further reading I found that unfortunately the kindle did a OTA update to 5.1.1 and that explains the reason I've been unable to permanently get rid of those lock ads.
I read your post, but I'm unclear on what I need to do to get root access (I mean without completely rooting the thing) I ran ADB from a windows command line, but I get a "not found" command when i type in SU..here's what it looks like (I'm putting my typing in bold, and the auto generated command line stuf in regular):
========================================
c:\amazon>adb shell
[email protected]:/ $ su
su
/system/bin/sh: su: not found
127:[email protected]:/ $
=====================================
Since I've only done the automated scrip that is supposed to allow google play and remove ads, I didn't really expect to have root access, but I'm hoping there's some way I can get this to work without trying to fully root the kindle. If I have to go that route I might as well get rid of the entire Kindle OS... I don't actually want to do that, as I use amazon prime so a lot of the default junk that comes with this kindle is useful.

Yeah it could have been better explained, they meant that process works if your tablet is rooted.
You won't get root commands to work in shell like that if it isn't rooted. Like it says the su file isn't there.
A lot changed yesterday with respect to 5.1.1 and root.
So you could use the temporary root found yesterday to gain access. Should be able to disable it from there. (First two code boxes there show the temp root access and the resulting prompt, the third lets you make it permanent). Though not sure why rooting it is tantamount to removing the entire OS tbh anyway.

Thank you! It appears I finally got the ads cleared permanently although I had a few hiccups along the way. I'm going to try to step-by-step this for anyone else that may have problem like I did (First andriod device, first time messing with one)
1) Got my kindle yesterday and it did an automatic over the air update to 5.1.1 - Found instructions for installing the google play store and removing ads in this excellent thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/installing-google-framework-playstore-t3216122
2) Downloaded "Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-Install-Play-Store.zip" file from rootjunkysdl.com but had some problems getting my device to recognize correctly. I found the only drivers to work on two seperate computers were from the amazon website https://developer.amazon.com/public/resources/development-tools/ide-tools/tech-docs/05-setting-up-your-kindle-fire-tablet-for-testing#Introduction
3) After I got the drivers to install I ran the "1-Install-Play-Store.bat" file from step #1. The batch file guided me thru everything and the Google Playstore worked just fine. At first I thought I got rid of the lock screen ads as well, but after my first reboot the ads came back.
4) This thread pointed out that with the new 5.1.1 updated you had to have root access enabled. I tried to do so, but the commands weren't working. The problem was, I was missing a critical step that wasn't explicitly stated in the other threads YOU MUST INSTALL THE ROOT_FIRE.ZIP and point your command prompt window to this extracted folder...even though the zip file in step#1 has an adb.exe it's missing other files to get you root acees
http://rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Amazon%20Fire%205th%20gen
5) After unpacking and running the commands as provided, the ads are gone. I'm attaching a link to a screenshot of my command window so folks can see what they should be typing in:

Think it might depend when you downloaded the Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-Install-Play-Store.zip, the zip has been around for some time and he updated it several times last night and somewhat confusingly kept the same name for it and the batch file inside.
The current zip and a few other versions last night has the root riles in the "files" directory that the batch uses them from there. Even then the order of the commands isn't ideal I don't think as the block the ads one comes in the install google play one before the root install which it relies on it.
I think if adb shell pm hide com.amazon.kindle.kso was moved to the blocking 5.1.1 OTA section and updated the same way those OTA hides were to
adb shell su -c "pm disable com.amazon.kindle.kso"
so that section would be
adb shell su -c "pm disable com.amazon.otaverifier"
adb shell su -c "pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota"
adb shell su -c "pm disable com.amazon.settings.systemupdates"
adb shell su -c "pm disable com.amazon.kindle.kso"
5? You know everything failed in that pic right?

Yeah, lol! [laughing with not at] It looks like the commands are failing because he's already in su! Something weird happened at the line:
adb wait-for-device && adb shell
. . . and he went into su (#), so subsequent shell and su fail, but the "pm hide" works! But then the one "exit" takes him out, as though he actually was only in shell. This is really strange.
Worked perfectly! Thanks
I was having issues with the supertool and even another manual entry way of blocking ads, but this seems to have worked.
Thank you!
If you're rooted, why not use an app instead of doing this via adb.

Amazon lockscreen ads are not the same as google ads. The lockscreen ads don't go away with ad blockers. That was the first thing I tried after root. Of course, someone could just make an app that runs this script specifically for this device but I find this way pretty simple

You can disable apps with app freezer apps in the play store. Therefore, instead of using adb to disable apps, use an app. App app app lol
