Rooted, then Unrooted, still have S-Off - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i was rooted, then i unrooted, but i still have my S-off. can i just re-root, I was going to use the akaSkriller method.
Hope this hasn't been beating into the ground, but the only info i could find was about other phones that run on Verizon.

Does 1-click root still work w/mt3g???

I know for a fact that 1-click root does not work for G1, I was just wondering if the fix was also done for the mt3g. My educated guess, would be yes, but I just want to hear confirmation. If I can't use the 1-click method, does anyone have an alternative besides the really long method. Basically, I'm trying to root my co-workers mt3g, from work. I don't have access to adb, fastboot, etc. I root a lot of my co-workers G1's, never did mt3g.
...anyone?
If your phone came with stock android 1.5 then you can use the unroot method to get back to 1.5 then one click will work.
if you unroot and its 1.6 stock then I'm unsure.
It works. I was always skeptical of rooting my phone but I did it two days ago. I got my phone originally with cupcake and I receive the OTA update to donut. This is what I did to get root..
First follow this to get back to cupcake:

Follow this to get root:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
Loading a custom rom:

It was really simple and I had no problems. I skipped the App2SD because I only have the original MicroSD card so I can't vouch for that. But everything else worked perfect. I'm currently running Cyanogen 4.2.1 with Enoch Theme which can be found at:

Unroot Unrevoked after the OTA?!?!?!?

Seriously? I can not find anything for the life of me!!! Has ANYONE found a way to unroot Unrevoked 3.21 if rooted AFTER accepting the OTA (3.29)??? If unrevoked puts out a root exploit without telling anyone how they obtain root, why wont they provide anyone with how to unroot it? Seriously make me so irritated because I see a bunch of people who rooted with UR3 and now need to unroot for various reasons; however, it seems almost impossible at this point...
I know there are a lot of people against unrevoked but nonetheless this is still a PROBLEM the needs to be RESOLVED.
Anybody have any answers or solutions?

From what has been said in recent posts the RUU does not work nor does the pc36img that was posted in the 2 step unrooting guide in the devolopment section.
From my experience in doing this, you need the Unrevoked S-ON tool, which you can find here.
I have found that downloading the RUU and running it twice tends to solve the problems.
I think it might not connect to the bootloader on the first time, just run the RUU again and it should work it's magic. I would recommend a full wipe of system/cache/dalvik-cache after applying the S-ON tool and then running the RUU.
EDIT: This will revert your entire phone to stock, so don't do it without knowing that it will cause you to lose root and possibly not gain it again.
Whoops... posted in the wrong spot.

I used the above guide to restore mine back to factory BUT the guide is mistaken on steps.
You WILL need to preform all steps regardless of the style of root. At least thats what it took for me to get back to stock.
Forget the red text and start at #1 and work to #15 for success.
Once unrooted you will be at the version prior to 3.70 and then you will get the OTA update to bring you current.

rooted ota

Will there be a rooted ota for people who didn't install it or never got it. I rooted my phone and would like the better radio in hopes I will get more cell bars
There's already the option to root if you already applied the OTA update or are planning to.

i dont understand what u mean i have perm root without the ota. If i install the ota it will break root. Will i have to go thru the whole process again if i do this? I know on the mytouchslide when they came out with an ota they just rooted it so it wouldnt break the current root
i havent tried perm root yet. however search this site for 'visionary' root, which is all u really need for now. i had visionary root installed along with several root only apps (titanium backup, cachemate, setcpu, several others) and the OTA installed while my phone was rooted with absolutely no problems.
I installed the ota over the perm root and now I have no superuser permissions. When I try to run visionary it says my phone is already rooted yet I cannot run apps that require root or get the # in termal can anyone help with this
lol
the "#" denotes root access lol...... (coming from a marginal linux background..)

Have you tried reapplying s-off?
I am also interested in getting a solution because right before I rooted my phone I started getting ota update notifications for my phone and now I cant upgrade my phone but the notifications continue to persist. So I figure if I can get a rooted update or delete something, I can get rid of notifications.
ok i got it working what i did was do what somesaid in the begining and that was to follow the guide that doesnt use visionary for perm root. I think its call temp to perm root. I always had the s-off just not the perm root. everything is fine now
At least you were able to apply the update. I tried doing that and Clockworks Recovery halted it because some signature was verified or something.

I didnt use clockworks recover i used the orginal. It just made me loose root and not s-off so i used the temp-too-perm root to get it back because visionary was saying my phone was already rooted. I believe I was getting this cause i had rooted without the ota the first time. The second time i used the ota.ko Instead of the preota.ko because i used this when i didnt update to the ota on the first run.
Oh, okay. Thanks for that. I'm currently in the same boat you were in. I applied the OTA and it's reporting S-OFF, Visionary is saying I'm rooted, but certain things aren't working.
In the process of getting it fixed.
EDIT: Went through the same process you did and I'm all good to go. I was able to apply the OTA update after rooting it and then re-rooted it.
so how exactly did you root you perma root your phone again after ota.
i have perma root right now, its pre-ota, i do want to install ota though.. would i have to go back and do the manual perma-root with the "ota" files now instead of the other ones. im just confused and want to clear this up before i do anything stupid. thanks!

Accidentally unrooted Dx

My friend has the Droid x running the official .605 build from verizon, he was rooted and accidentally accepted the update and it unrooted him. He now has an unrooted DX and is going to upgrade to a newer ICS 4G phone here soon but would like to get his DX rooted again. That way he can backup the apps and app data to be restored on the new phone. But we can't seem to figure out how to re-root without SBFing back to froyo and losing all the data. Especially, since this would completely defeat the purpose of Rooting to back up data.
Help please!
No problems. It's a piece of cake. 1 click root works great. It's detailed in Pete's Moto root thread in this forum. Lots of other step by step instructions out there too. Here's one on Droid life that also has links to the software you'll need:
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/0...roidx2-droidx-and-droid3-running-gingerbread/
Wow, that looks very easy! And it won't erase the data? From what I can tell it won't.
Nope.
Enable USB debugging.
Plug 'er in.
Click.
Wait for the 3 reboots...
Boom:
Root you can haz.
Thanks!

How I Achieved Unlock And S-OFF On My Verizon M8 With Android Lollipop

How I achieved unlock and S-OFF on my Verizon M8 with Android Lollipop
Here's my phone:
Verizon HTC One M8
Locked bootloader
S-On
Android L
Totally untouched
While trying to do this, I could only find posts saying that it's impossible for now on the Verizon M8. So I found a way...
I used Kingroot (PC version, as the Android app didn't work for me) to achieve a temporary, unreliable root. It would go away after 1 or 2 reboots.
Root with Kingroot, then run Sunshine and pony up the $25 because those guys are brilliant.
Sunshine made the phone reboot and I lost root, so Sunshine couldn't finish the job.
So I re-rooted with Kingroot and tried Sunshine again and it worked.
I really hope others can have the same success from my experience, and maybe even Sunshine can use this info to incorporate a smoother process into their app.
I have been using info here on XDA for years but never had anything to contribute until now. So please excuse me if this post seems noobish or is in the wrong section
Success!
I have the same setup:
- Verizon HTC One M8
- Locked Bootloader
- S-ON
- Android Lollipop
- Have never rooted or done anything outside of stable factory releases
Word for word, I had the same experience. My device is now S-OFF.
Thanks for the help was very discouraging to read everyone else on the web say it's impossible right now, but this was a big help.
1- Install Sunshine
2-Install Kingroot PC version
3- Run Sunshine all the way to the step before attempting to get root access and keep it there
4- Run Kingroot and root (it might take a couple of times to work)
5- Continue with Sunshine once temp root access is obtained
6- Device reboots and opening Sunshine shows that it failed
7- Close and reset both apps
8- Repeat steps 3->5
9- Device powers off, does not reboot (idk if this happened for you)
10- Starting into Bootloader shows S-OFF
11- Celebrate with cake. YATA!!
Kingroot
i enabled usb debuging, what else should i do?
i cannot get kingroot to work, its been the 20th time i followed all of your steps, i have anddroid sdk and such
my kingroot version is 2.4.0.xxx, my best luck was when i ran kingroot and my phone restarted and that was it, it went back up just like normal

Is there some reason you guys don't just flash back to kit Kat with dottat's FUU and then run sunshine without any trickery?

Because it's not about kitkat or not, it's about having a Verizon locked phone !
And a FUU is a Firmware Update Utility, not a downgrade utility. And we all know we can't downgrade a firmware with S-ON

I could have sworn there was a munged 4.4.4 downgrader, but maybe it requires S-OFF to run. I just reflashed my phone using it, before returning it for warranty repair, and it took me from 5.0.1 S-OFF Rooted Unlocked to 4.4.4 S-ON Locked. But maybe it only runs if you are already S-OFF, so my bad.

As Mr Hofs stated, you cannot downgrade with s-on, no "maybe" about that.

But we can UPgrade, yeah? The .exe from HTC/VZW will bump an S-ON kitkat phone up to Lollipop... that was the original purpose of it right?

No the original intent of this thread is how to achieve S-off with a Verizon phone on lollipop.
So the phone is already on lollipop and s-on. You can't downgrade an s-on device and there is in this thread no mentioning for downgrading or upgrading the firmware. It's only for obtaining s-off. Read it all again and you probably get it.
Verizon phones have been locked out for s-off possibilities for a while now so this seems the solution.
I think you are a bit confused or missing some knowledge about the situation
Sorry, I was clarifying on the use of the tool. I know the intent of the thread, and didn't mean to threadjack. I get it - the procedure seems pretty straightforward and I don't think anyone really is clear on why kingroot is such a crapshoot (except that VZW is clearly specifically blocking, but not 100%). I was lucky enough to get my replacement phone with 4.4.4 (recently) so Sunshine did what it needed to without any assistance. But I did the same song and dance with the last m8 I had... kingroot/sunshine/kingroot/sunshine/kingroot and eventually it took.
Sorry for the prior confusion.
