Charge While Off? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can you charge this device while it is completely off? Any time I plug in the charger while it is off it turns back on and boots to CM7. If I then power off it will turn itself back on, is this normal?
Thanks.

Yeah, this is normal. Not sure why, but the device needs to be on to charge. Probably has something to do with software control or tracking of the battery charge. I'm sure someone smarter than me knows the real answer, but if you plug the device into either the charger or computer while off it will power on.

To charge it with it powered off....
Plug it in with it on....
Long press power...
Select "Power off"
This is the only way to get it to shut down and remain turned off while charging

Thanks for the reply but even when I select power off it eventually rebooted.

If you leave the battery in a very low percentage for weeks it will be dead. Then? How can you bring the nook to "life" again?

How to charge the titan? opinions?

I've been told that charging the Titan while off is the best way - so the battery resets or something. I don't know if you have to do this everytime or just once and a while.
but i found that I turn my phone off, then while it's charging - it will mysteriously turn itself back on. The battery is not full yet, it just will randomly turn on.
So Is there a way to keep the phone off while charging? (I'm using a wall HTC adapter)
There is no reason to charge with the phone off. Also are you really turning the phone or or putting it in standby.
I hold the power button down till it says 'turn off , yes/no" and I push yes.
by the way what is standby?
push power button to turn phone screen off.
Some winmo phones turn on by itself, the titan and TP are 2.
I use S2U2 to lock the phone so the phone closes itself at a set time.
IMO, turning off your cell phone to charge ruins the point of having a cell phone for the time its off. Even if the phone's off, it'll still be draining a little energy.
Standby:
Phone is on. You press the power button breifly once. Phone screen turns off and phone goes into a low power mode.
Off:
Phone is on. You press and hold the power button and tap Yes when the dialog box asks if you want to turn off the phone. Phone then turns off completely.
If my phone is charging off a PC via USB it will sometimes awake from standby on its own. It doesn't do this when using just a charger. It does not turn on by itself though if fully turned off.
I only turn off my phone to charge if I want it to charge a little bit faster.
Sweet thanks for the replies.
I was just curious. But it turns out that my phone kept turning on, because my charger was on it's way out for some reason.
Tested it and it was only charging at a rate 50mA way less than the 1A label. And it was always super hot. So got a new one, problem solved, glad it didn't fry my phone

what you're referring to is calibrating the battery. to calibrate the battery, you need to charge your phone to 100%, let it die, then charge it to 100% while the phone is off. calibrating your battery resets the sensors inside which provide all the information about your battery, including remaining battery life. definitely a good thing to do every once and a while and you'll notice the difference
There aren't sensors inside the battery.

Questions about charging the NookColor.

I dunno if this phenomena is normal with the NC, or if it's happening ONLY in my NC.
I've noticed that whenever my NC's battery is low*, you cannot turn it on anymore. That's all well and good, because I would like to keep it turned off while it's being charged. I reckon it'll make it faster to charge because it doesn't use that much power in that state.
The problem is: IT DOESN'T STAY THAT WAY.
In my case, as soon as the NC's battery level reaches 9%, it AUTOMATICALLY TURNS ON. And whenever I try to turn it off again WHILE THE USB CABLE CHARGER IS PLUGGED IN, it AUTOMATICALLY TURNS BACK ON AGAIN, which is extremely annoying since I don't typically use it while it's being charged. For me it wastes a lot of time because it would've been faster to charge it while it's turned off.
Anyone knows who can help me out on this?
1st Question: I want to be able to charge my NC while it's turned off. Is it possible?
2nd Question:
Is there a way to override the rule where it needs to have at least 15% power before you can turn it on?
I think I read in one of your posts you're using CM7... If that's the case... after your nook is connected and charging.... or after it turns itself back on....
Press and hold power until the power menu comes up
Select Power Off in the menu
It won't power back on automatically when you shut it down that way.
Are you sure that pressing the power button doesn't turn off the screen?
Cause I think that mine works this way while charging.
Unleashed from Nook Color on Cm7 Nightly 162 @1.200Mhz
I get the screen/charge thing too on nightly 150. Plug it in, turn screen off, look back in a few minutes, screen is on! I like to watch a video in bed while I drift off with it on slow charge but the screen is still on in the morning.
I was planning to use Tasker to fix this but haven't got very far yet.
I turn mine off all the time when I am charging. The only time it turns back on is if there is a power interruption.
I've seen many threads/posts talking about charging NC.
My case:
Once plugging for charging, it turns ON. I (or we) have to turn the screen off. Note: just turn the SCREEN off, not turn the NOOKcolor off.
I've had the same 'nook turning on when charging' on all roms tried - CM7, MIUI and MN Nook stock - and always wondered why??
In any event, i too also just turn the screen off.
cheers,

I always turn it completely off as it charges faster. There is no harm in doing so.

You can do that but it just takes longer time to get ready after you unplug the charge, with screen off, all you need is light press the N or the power button.
Additionally, don't know about CM7 but with stock OS, B&N clearly indicate that we need to turn screen off, NOT the NC off when charging.

Because there's no way to turn it off and it not reboot with power using stock AOS... it always behaves exactly like CM7 does if you hold the power button to turn it off... it reboots if power is connected... with CM7 you can select the power off option in the power long press menu and it will stay off.

[Q] HTC Not charging while off (cLk)

Hey,
I have installed cLk and my battery ran out by accident, and when I put it in with my USB it just turns on the phone, then turns off almost straight away then turns on and goes in a loop. How can I ressurect my phone? I thought cLk was able to charge while off?
Thanks,
Snowled
Did you check the contact pins between battery and HD2 body?My experience is that the middle pin is so easy to be bent, and can not contact to the battery. This makes battery unchargeably.
CLK can be offline charging but I still get problem too if I want turn on my device,,,i must pull out my battery and back it back to turn on my device,,,,

This is due to how clk charges while off. AFAIK the phone isn't truly off when charging, instead it boots to something (clk?kernel?something else?) that just handles charging with the screen off. This is also why the hardware key lights will light up when charging while off. You don't need to pull the battery, just unplug from charger and power up.
If you still can't get it to charge, remove the battery, connect the usb cable then wait a few seconds, finally insert the battery and your phone should start charging normally .
cLK: phone off under charge
Hi guy
with cLK 1.5.0.3 when my phone is off and under charge, I have to remove the battery because the led stay on, and as if I push the power button, the phone doesn't start on.
This happen also when I unplugged the cable and push the power button like suggest to jwchips (2 post above)
There's a solution?
Ps. With phone off and usb cable is plugin, the battery charge.
still not charging
phone still not charging, I have to charge the battery outside of the phone, then insert it for the phone to boot up, then it will charge, if the battery died on me, it wont charge with the original charger or with the computer USB...
Enable in-built charging mode in CLKs advanced settings and try.
Don't know about Clk...but in magldr...when in boot menu screen...HD2 charges. (Led is off...no indication of charging...but it does).

What version of clk do you use? The latest experimental version can charge in off mode (both by recovery or built-in clk) and wake up your phone easily. You can charge in off mode when using old clk. But, the wake-up key combination is weird, i.e. volume up + volume down + power key. It is difficult to press them at the same time.
If all failed, charge the battery out of the phone.:fingers-crossed:
charge it in tricolor bootloader! (volume down + power) and it will not show led during charge

Are you sure about this? I don't know exactly what happens because I only have WPH 7.8 and I can't really rely on the battery indication while it turns on. Every time it is different.
So, maybe a new feature in the next release of MAGLDR can be a battery charge indication and levels? Since it boots up anyway to charge (even in magldr), i think it would be helpful. What do you all think? Maybe we post a humble request to the developers of MAGLDR?

My nexus 4 refuses to turn on while attached to the charger

I got my nexus 4 on Tuesday morning, plugged it in to the charger, waited until it reached 100%, then inserted my sim card, turned it on, upgraded through OTA from 4.2 to 4.2.2 and then set up my usual things. I discharged the battery from 100% to 16%, then I turned it off and plugged to the charger. I turned it on when it was at 95%, and unplugged from the charger because I had to get out of home. This morning it was roughly at 30%, then I turned it off and plugged it to the charger. Later I turned it on, it was at 93%, so I waited until 100% before unplugging. It stood ages at 99%, so I turned it off. A little bit later I tried to turn it on, and when I pushed the power button it showed that the battery was charged, then the image disappeared and the led began blinking in red until I released the power button. I unplugged it, then powered on, and it booted, everything as normal: but the battery was on 94%. I plugged it in and after one minute it was already at 99%. I turned it off, then pressed the power button, but same behaviour: image, then red led blinking. So I plugged the phone to my galaxy nexus charger, waited for a little, and then same behaviour again. So I unplugged it, turned it on, and when I was in the system I saw that the battery was on 100%.
Now the battery is normally discharging while using it, no strange values.
What should I do now? Should I let it discharge until it turns off, or should I never let it discharge until it turns off? And should I charge it with the stock charger or the galaxy nexus charger? I'll be grateful to everyone makes me know what he thinks.
Excuse me for my poor English and for how much I wrote, I would make things clear as possible.

I am sorry for my lazy, I only skim through your post, but I do read the question.
I read somewhere in this 4rum that the Nexus4's battery can be charged at anytime you want.
FOr me, I usually use the phone until 20-30%, then I turn my phone off and charge.
For my brother, he charge without any pattern, and he doesn't turn the phone off when charging.
For my own opinion, you shouldn't use the phone until the batter is empty.
Notice the same thing 3 times with my Nexus. Have searched for a answer to this but no one has a answer I guess or just ignore it. I just power up without it being plug in ..
R: My nexus 4 refuses to turn on while attached to the charger
Now it's at 13%, i'll plug it in the next 10 minutes, then i'll see what will happen this time. Very strange indeed.. I'm only a little bit scared about the "red led death" i read about here and there over the internet.

I never turn mine off. I charge it all night every night when I sleep. Stays on.
Send it back? Rma?
as above i charge my device every night, its never powered off,. is the device hot while charging not like usual warm temp, but very hot that the device detects an issue?
the battery stats are wiped each time its charged, i guess you have some internal failure, battery not being detected after you disconnect from mains or reported as flat, faulty, unreliable source
its best not to fully discharge the battery but maybe you should use it till it powers off then recharge, any charger is fine, but you dont need anything higher than 1amp
i would return it, would suck to have an issue away from home.

Nexus 4 Died?

So i was playing a game called The room battery was at 1% but was connected to a charger and it suddenly powered off and a red light started to blink then the light disappeared and now it is connected to the charger and has no response, is my phone dead? :S i'm so nervous.
The device may not respond until it is fully charged. I think it's best if you wait until it's charged fully and see what goes from there.

Maybe it's the adapter that's broken? Try changing adapter/cable or try charging using your PC

So many threads on this. Charge your phone overnight. Not working? Rip off the back cover and disconnect and reconnect it. That's a no go? Check another thread.... Wish you luck

When I have get the red light I have to keep trying to power it on taking the charger in and out. Last time took 30 mins for it to go away of continuously trying to power on and taking charger in and out. The reason I do this is because if you leave it on charge with the red light on the phone will not charge. You can leave it over night and the red light will still be there and your phone won't be charged! It will only charge if you get the charger screen up and the red light is off.
Happens to me if don't have much battery and I try to watch something on the TV with slimport connected

plug it in, and press and hold volume up plus power for 60 seconds, then release. It should then power up automatically or press the power button again. This key combination is the equivalent of a battery pull, which is what you have to do when it gets locked up like that or battery drains too low.
none of those worked i tried it's bricked i guess

Your phone's fine. The reason it powered down even though it was plugged in is because it was at 1%, and considering you were playing a game your phone was probably expending power faster than it could charge.
When there's absolutely no power left it won't respond no matter how long you hold down the power button. Just plug it in & let it charge for a few hours don't worry.
source: this happens to everybody who uses their phone extensively at some point

It's not bricked, there are a lot of threads about it around here. You have to charge the battery, and keep trying with vol down + power, until it takes you to recovery. From there choose reboot.

you have to disconnect the battery and charge it withe external charger for an hour then reconnect your battery . i hope this help you .
