Hello all,
Today has been quite a frustrating day. I got my surround back in november from BestBuy. Since then, i have had constant problems with the software, but nothing that rebooting it could not fix.
Then, in May, for the first time it got stuck on the HTC welcome screen. I took it in BestBuy, they did a restore to it. It took a while... but the phone worked.
Last night, it happened again. This time, to save time, I took it into the nearest AT&T store. There, they opened it up, took one look at it. Told me it was water damaged (WHAT!??) and that they could not do anything and I had to buy a new one for the cosmic price of over $400. No way in hell. I have never done anything to it. It was explained to me that that could happen even if I put it in my pocket and I have been sweating. Well, it was the indicator by the charger.
Quite discouraged, I got home and of course, on the internet. I found that the water damage indicators that actually they take more into account are the ones on the battery and another one right behind it, on the phone. I took it apart, and those were white.
SO, I went to BestBuy for second opinion. THERE, they tell me, no, it is not water damaged and you are under manufacturer warranty... Take it back to the store and they should replace it.
I go back to the store. This time, they agreed with the BestBuy people, after I had explained what they told me there (the people at AT&T remembered me). So, I was sent to an AT&T Device Repair place thing, to get a replacement.
The sweet young lady with mile long painted nails... opened the phone. Took one look at it and said water damaged. You are not covered under warranty. She was pretty much talking down to me.
SO, of course I got furious. She took the battery out and told me the same thing. The red little sticker by the charging spot says moisture got inside. After I asked her why the ones further inside the phone were white, she told me this one was the indicator. I repeated. She said those were indicators too. WELL, shouldnt those be red too!?? If the phone is somehow magically been damaged by my sweat or who knows what... freaking condensation from when talking on the phone. She said, we do not care what you do with your phone. It has been water damaged and I can issue you a phone for the full price only.
FURIOUS, I call at&t on the way home. They told me to look at the one in the battery compartment of the phone and since it was white... I should have gotten a replacement. AMEN! The representative I talked to, told me that the fact that i was in the store, was not even recorded on my record. He told me that sometimes AT&T hires people and they have no idea of what they are talking about. They suggested I got a third opinion at another place.
Needless to say, it is Sunday and those are closed.
So, i went back to the internet. I found that most times they do not even consider the one on the charging place, because it can turn red easily (exactly what they told me at BestBuy. I was told that even air humidity can turn it red but INSIDE it is not damaged). Also, apparently they have a way of looking at the deterioration of the phone. WELL, I guess that sweet sweet lady did not feel like doing her job today.
Not to mention the fact that she did not notice that my SIM card was not inside the phone, and proceeded to do a hard reset or whatever it is called... not just the holding the vol. up and down.
Anyway, I just want to hear your opinion on this. I see there are many competent people here, willing to listen to your story. I will not pay $400 for a new phone when the freaking indicator turn red even from air humidity.
So, which indicators mean what? What do you think I should do? I do not want to be a victim here of smart placing of indicators, so AT&T or HTC can say "oops... we cant replace it."

I would go to a 3rd place if its close and see what they say and explain everything again.
I agree with you and I have read that even humidity can turn the charger one red.
They have indicators all over, which tells them how far water got in. So if you put it around a spin cycle in the washer, all of them will probably change.

Hi I have dropped my phone because somebody bumped into me at busterminal and now no display. Phone works but no display. What to do?
Well it's obviously broken. Now we have that out of the way you have a few choices.
#1: Go down the "I pay for my repair" route.
#2: It doesn't look like I dropped it... I'll ring Sony and say "I don't know what's wrong with it, but the screen isn't working" and probably end up getting a free replacement.
#3: Take the thing apart myself and fix it, I might have to buy a new screen.
#4: Throw it in the bin. Don't do that one!

oh you are funny guy, but then I turn on the phone in the dark the display lights up, but no feed from the phone.I didn't drope it on concrete but a plastic floor
lol i think the sudden jerk of the phone when it hit the floor pulled the thingy attached to the screen from its socket, i had this same issue with my p910 few years back, all i did was opened the phone and made sure everythign inside was fastened onto each other and wasn't loose, and poof, that did the trick until my son emptied his bottle of milk on it few days after

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago.
Dropped my phone like 1-2 meters and the display went black.
There were minimal damage on the phone, almost non visible.
However, I took it to a service center and told them that it just went black, but they opened it up and saw that I had dropped it
$500 poorer now
The display came back
I will guard the phone like it million dollars now Nobody will ever bump into me again

Yeah This is great. Sorry I called you names.
I've had my myTouch for about a month now and have been lurking around the forums for about the same amount of time. With adequate research, I've been able to successfully root, install and run my phone with Maxismo's HERO rom. Successfully meaning have done all that can be with a 4GB class 2 SDHC.
Now to the title. Yesterday morning after a quick McDonalds run, a friend and I decided to post and enjoy our 600 calorie breakfast in the car while I had Pandora running on my Magic through the car audio jack. To no surprise, friend decides that it is a good idea to slide my phone off the armrest, onto the cupholder where a half-filled cup of McD's orange juice parked itself with no cover.. I blame the lady at the drive-thru for not giving us straws. It was in there for a good 5 seconds.
A **** load of used Kleenex's later, I examined the phone and found that the water-damage indicator was still solid white. Aside from the apparent stickier feel, everything seemed fine.. Until I got home. A couple hours later, I reached for my phone to find that it was vibrating. No call, no vmail, not even a text from homegirl to see how my phone was doing. I had tried all the "phone-drying" methods, from Dust-Off to submerging your phone into a bowl of uncooked rice and I still sit here writing this, with my month-old myTouch dancing around my desk like it was happy to see me.
My first question is, has anybody encountered such a problem? If so, has anyone devised a way to remedy this? Second, I have PHP through T-Mobile (phone insurance for those overseas).. Should I just un-root, suck it up and pay the $130 deductible?
I met up with homegirl later on that night and yes, she was happily myTouched.
I shall await replies if any. Thanks for reading.
does the phone still work besides that. cuz if you are going to pay the deductible, i say just report it stolen and pay the fee to get a new one and use the water damaged one as a back up to flash test roms. the only reason you would unroot it and return it is if you are going through warranty, but it would fail, because though the indicator is still white, they open it up and check for water damage there, so you would still have to pay an out of warranty fee, which is like 400 when I had to return my mytouch for warranty purposes.
Just out of curiosity, where is the water indicator?
Also you should leave the phone submerged (cover off and battery off) in rice or packs of silica if you kept those from packaging of electronics for about 2 days. The longer the better. Then see if the phone still works.

Water level indicator is on the lower right hand corner of the battery compartment. It's a round white sticker.
Phone was left (battery and cover off) in a bowl of rice as I mentioned in my post. I think it's the dried up sugar stuck on the board that's causing the phone to act up.. Gives a whole new meaning to "sweet phone".

Phone is still running fine aside from being stuck on vibrate.. The volume button seems to be the only other that's acting up but it's sporadic. If I do end up keeping the phone I'll open it up and have a look-see. I imagine it isn't gonna be a walk in the park like my N95.
Good point on the warranty, my friend who works for T-Mobile said I could return it at her store though.. Will they crack it open later on and possibly bill me?

they send it to their return center and there they open it up. it happened to me on my sidekick. My trackball on it wasn't working so i returned it to warranty. They billed me 3 months later because they said it was an out of warranty product because they found water damage on the inside of the phone and the water damage indicator was still white. I didn't even know that it had water damage when I returned it. It must have gotten water in it when my hands were wet or when I had it in the rain.
Have you tried to turn off the vibrate feature from the settings to see if that turned off the vibrations?
All stickied up is what your volume button is. That is why it is vibrating and why the volume is acting up. The trick would be to get the sticky orange juice out from under your volume rocker. My menu button was sticking so I used a tiny piece of paper to stick in the very tiny gap between button and phone, maybe you will be able to dislodge the sticky stuff. Its a thought.
But insurance wise I think I'd say I lost it at Mcdonalds (snicker).

I agree. Keep the phone and report it stolen.
Had the same thing happen with cranberry and vodka. pull the battery. Get the assembly manual off of the forum. Dissasemble and clean any and all boards with 90% isoproyl alcohol and a childs soft bristle tooth brush. Do not blow on the boards to dry them as condensation can occur. Just use a fan at room temperature. Make sure you don't get a bunch of alcohol in places it won't come out of (speakers, Microphones, any type of button, USE COMMON SENSE), and only use as much as absolutely necesary. I did mine about 24 hours after it happened and it is still working 3 months later. Sugar will kill it eventualy if left inside so it needs to come out. I have had not one single issue since iI cleaned mine. BE VERY GENTLE. There are a total of FOUR liquid indicators on the unit. One in the battery compartment, and two you cant see, and yet another behind the tab for holding a lanyard. If you need better instructions shoot me an e-mail. [email protected]

Haha. I tried it out with a bunch of post-its and it seems to have alleviated the volume issue slightly. I think I do have to open it up though coz it's still acting up. Thanks for the tips.. Maybe I should blame it on a McDonalds staff member.

it's a good thing you have insurance then and you told them that you "lost" it or it was "stolen"
I just thought I'd share the story of how my Nexus One became a 576 dollar(CA Tax) brick. I went hiking up in the Angeles Forest to go Bungee jumping on Saturday. It was a 5 mile hike, but not a too terribly hard one. I put my Nexus One in my bag and didn't think about it. When we got to the Bridge to Nowhere, the Bungee location, I took my Nexus One out of my bag to take some photos and video. I hit the power button and nothing happened. I knew my battery couldn't be dead. I took off my sunglasses and noticed spider cracks all over the screen originating from the bottom left of the screen.
It sucks, and I have no idea how it happened. I never took my bag off my back, I never hit anything. It is very depressing. I'm trying to email the google store support to see if i can get it refurbished or something so i don't have to buy a new one for full price. The screen displays nothing, but still responds to touch. I can feel when i hit the area that unlocked it the vibrating feedback. I doubt there are any AMOLED screens out there, or a way to easily replace it myself. Let's hope google can fix it somehow for a price less than buying a new one. If not, well then I'm boned.
Wow, sorry dude. I hope Google can help you out on this matter. Maybe you did bump it somewhere without knowing?

yeah cracked capacitive touch screens usually continue to work fine and the screen under them should not be effected unless it took a pretty darn good hit
sucks to have happened to you so soon but i will say that personally having known how easy it is to crack these types of screens i have always kept my G1 in my jean pocket with the screen facing my leg at all times.
i've dropped my G1 about 5 or 6 times in the past 1+ year and the back of my phone is in much worse shape than the front but still no cracked screen i do however have a half way broken back cover

If you have it on T-Mobile, there's a way to get it replaced via asurion insurance for a $130 deductible.. Since it's still within the first 14 days of owning the device, you could do that.

Just add insurance and you're saved. Tell them you have a cracked screen, and you're golden =) (never tell asurion that you had your phone stolen.. you'll need a police report)

The phone still turns on, I see notification glows of the trackball. The buttons light up, I can even unlock the phone by sliding where i know the button is.. but the screen doesn't come on at all. it looks like it cracked at the bottom right and spider'd up most of the screen.
It was in a padded compartment of my bag, and it only had a few bottles of water(in an entirely different section of the bag) and my hoodie in it. I can't understand how it happened.

Crazy, Ive had a couple close calls with my G1 and saw one of my friends G1s drop right in front of me and shatter at the movies but hers still worked just cracked everywhere. That really sucks.

From what I've read there's been a lot of different stories of whether or not asurion will cover the phone, but from what I can tell they do- and it's also listed on their phoneclaim.com site (though I don't recommend using it.. it's usually easier to call, I work for tmobile and customers that come in have tons of complaints from that)
To add insurance to the phone you may have to go into a retail store from what I read and show them a reciept from google that it was bought, and they'll add it to your account, so hopefully you can do that, heh. I'll keep a lookout for any new info and post it here, so keep us updated on the status ^^
Sounds like the water bottles may have hit it at an angle, there could have been a bump or something that caused the plastic lid of the bottle to become compressed against the phone, thus resulting in a pressure crack (which explains the spidering) Even if it's in the padded section, keep in mind that if you put enough pressure on a screen it'll crack, as everything has it's breaking point. For your next one nexus one (lol, 'nextus one') I'd probably recommend a hard-leather pouch for when you're going hiking so it doesn't happen again, and the soft-case for your pocket for less bulk
Once boxwave comes out with their anti-glare screen protectors, I'd suggest one of those as well to prevent the little nicks and such ^_^

seems like it might be a downside of an OLED screen. I've seen several cracked G1's work fine, it does surprise me that the N1 won't display anything at all.. maybe the video cable came unplugged somehow. Hmm.
I called T-mo and she said they show it as a phone that can make a claim if you already had insurance on your account, but that she wasn't able to add it to a new Nexus One since t-mobile does not support or sell it. I tried to talk her into it repeatedly and she said it just wouldn't let her. I said thanks and politely hung up. I'm gonna try calling back again to get someone else in a bit.
OMG! That really bites! Was it really hot out? I really feel for you I paid full price for mine too. Thats why I'm looking for a hard case. Hope it works out for you.
Same problem - cracked screen on Nexus One
OK I was not hiking or anything - just hanging out with my Nexus One in my pocket. Pulled it out and the screen looked funny. By the next morning, all black. It wasn't until I looked closer in bright light that I noticed several cracks in the internal screen, coming from the edges.
I think this is going to be a big problem for this phone. I've dropped my G1 about 20 times over the past 15 months and it's fine. I've even dunked it in a glass of water, dried it out, and it's fine. I did nothing to my Nexus One and the screen (inside! with no external damage whatsoever) is cracked and now does not work. This is lousy manufacturing.
I put a call into HTC and they are supposed to be sending me a fedex label to send them the phone, but I didn't tell them the screen is cracked, I just said the screen doesn't work. So I am expecting them to tell me I'll have to pay to replace the screen. The warranty number for HTC is 888-617-1113. If you call them and get the price for replacing the screen, please post it here so I and others know what to expect.
Also, there is a company in Dallas called dr cell phone (google it) which can repair screens the same day they receive your phone, you can just ship it to them. It costs somewhere between $75 and $175 and they said they will repair the Nexus One (they do many other HTC phones). However they told me they are waiting on parts from HTC so it could be 1-2 weeks before they get parts.

Sorry, but if you try to do the insurance thing listed here, your claim will be denied. Asurion checks to see when you last used the IMEI number to place a call. They will see that you have been unable to place any calls since a certain date and added insurance after that date. They will know your device was damaged before you added the insurance and deny the claim. Since your touch screen still works, perhaps try holding the search button to initiate a call through voice dialing. If you can make a call after adding the insurance, you should be good.

Same here. Always on the rear pocket, even when driving and its still in pristine shape (sold it yesterday, snif!). From your second assertion, looks like the G1's display is even stronger than the back (not as flexible, though).
I was using my hd2 while charging, and I noticed it felt pretty hot. I really didnt think much of it because it gets warm pretty often when charging, especially if I am watching a movie or browsing forums while its plugged in. Later I noticed that the screen was not responding. I took the rubber skin off the back and notice some rust-colored spot on the inside of the skin, and on the handset. It was on the back right above the usb port. It actually appears to have burned from inside the handset. I cleared the storage, but it is still unresponsive. I called Tmo customer support and they said it it "unheard of . The guy told me it might be the wall charger, but they will be sending a new unit to my home, and a box to send the old one back. I asked about a new charger, since that could be the problem. He said no, that first they would just send the hd2 itself and if this happens again, they would try a new charger. He also informed me that if I did not send the old phone back within a certain amount of days. they would be charging me $400 U.S. , because that is the actual cost. I would think they would rather send the new charger to guarantee that this doesn't cost another $400. but thats just me. Anyway, anyone else have this issue or something similar?
Sounds like a faulty unit. I haven't heard/read of anyone having such a problem.
Update!
The replacement phone came today. I found it outside my house, on the ground when I got home from work. It was in an envelope inside a small plain white box.
Boy, they don't kid around. It was literally "Just the Phone". No sd card, no battery, not even a back cover. It is identical to the one I already have, with one exception. Inside the back there is usually a small red button which resets the device, this one had a small, yellow button.

Mine's got a yellow button as well. I'm glad they took care of you though. Are you inside or outside of the 30 day window after activation/renewal?
Update!
Yes, I purchased the original on release. I gave back my TP2 (still inside 14 days) and they gave me hd2 and $75. The screen on the replacement seems to be more responsive and It came with a lockscreen wallpaper not on the original.

I was using my hd2 while charging, and I noticed it felt pretty hot. I really didnt think much of it because it gets warm pretty often when charging, especially if I am watching a movie or browsing forums while its plugged in. Later I noticed that the screen was not responding. I took the rubber skin off the back and notice some rust-colored spot on the inside of the skin, and on the handset. It was on the back right above the usb port. It actually appears to have burned from inside the handset. I cleared the storage, but it is still unresponsive. I called Tmo customer support and they said it it "unheard of . The guy told me it might be the wall charger, but they will be sending a new unit to my home, and a box to send the old one back. I asked about a new charger, since that could be the problem. He said no, that first they would just send the hd2 itself and if this happens again, they would try a new charger. He also informed me that if I did not send the old phone back within a certain amount of days. they would be charging me $400 U.S. , because that is the actual cost. I would think they would rather send the new charger to guarantee that this doesn't cost another $400. but thats just me. Anyway, anyone else have this issue or something similar?

I have seen this happen one other time on these forums. It has happened before.
I got same problem too. The only thing that I can come up with is the overheating of the cpu. I wanna take phone out a part to actually see what's going on inside there. Need a special tool or something. The screw looks weird to me.

It is probably a tiny, little Torx screw. Is it kind of star shaped?

Somewhere on the site here (can be found elsewhere on the web too) is a disassembly guide for the HD2 with lots of pictures that shows what's inside the phone and where.

I have noticed have been a few reports of S7 Edge screens cracking for what seems to be no reason. Mine has lived in a Pelican cover all of its life
I had mine next to my bed last night, before going to sleep I turned it over to be screen side down, and I heard a weird noise coming from it (sounding something like an electrical short). I picked it up, unplugged the charger, and was able to see the cracks appear as they slowly (over about 4 seconds) appeared all over the screen.
From looking at it, the cracks appear to have originated from the volume buttons?
Does anyone have any ideas / other articles / posts that I can see to help me with my case with Samsung warranty in Australia?

It appears that the display cracked from within? Did you apply any considerable force to the volume buttons before this?
Can you feel the cracks when running your finger across the screen?

The cracks seem to be from within the screen, and you cannot really feel anything from the surface.
There was no unusual force applied to the phone that I can recall.
The part that really confused me, was the fact that it seemed to take about 5 seconds from the start of being able to hear the noise, to the time the cracks had made their way across the screen.
Yeah, not calm, pretty pissed about the whole thing actually. I was hoping I would be able to find a few more examples of this happening to others, but it doesn't appear to be the case.
Contact samsungs customer service, maybe there is a chance that you get it replaced by samsung. Doesn't look like it's your fault.

The problem will be proving that. I'm not implying the OP isn't being truthful, but you can pretty much guarantee the majority of people that go to Samsung with cracked screens do so whilst claiming that it just happened and the phone hadn't been dropped/manhandled etc, even if they had. Unfortunately, I can't see this being repaired free of charge.
As for the photos, I can't look at them without cringing! I'd be mortified if that happened to mine. Hope you get it sorted.

The phone is currently with a service centre in Perth WA.
The guy I spoke to there was one of the biggest douche bags I have dealt with in a very long time. He had very close to zero interest in helping me, and pretty much laughed me off the whole time.
Yesterday (after about a week of it being at the service centre) I contacted Samsung Support, and they informed me that the warranty case manager at Samsung had rejected my claim as hey do not cover physical damage. I informed her of what had happened to the phone, and why in my opinion it should be covered. She said that there was no information on the Service Request form about what had happenened (written and sent in by the DB in Perth), and all the request said was "Cracked Screen and customer is escalating for Samsung to Cover". There was no information about what I had said happened, and as the case manager does not have the physical device (I am assuming they are on the other side of the country), they just directly rejected it without any thought because they don't normally cover that sort of damage.
Long story short, they are going to re open the service request with the new information and see how it goes.
This time I will be able to speak directly with the Samsung case manager and explain to him my version of events, instead of wasting my time with some smart arsed tech.

Simmilar issue like Note 5/ Edge Plus. The problem is from drastic temperatures of charging device and surface of your table/ plot. The phone is very warm because of the charging process but the surface of the plot is cold -> and boom, the screen or glassy back cracking. My opinion is because of the slim body of the device, when the battery going to degredation the dimensions is going bigger and there is a chance to crack the whole device from inside.

I recognize this thread is old, but same thing happened recently to me with my S7 Edge after less than a month. Never broke a phone ever, had it in a case, didn't drop it. Broke similar to yours. Samsung basically said 'we don't believe you' and that was the end of it. Done with those guys. Nokia was also a once great cellphone Company who similarly got smug like this, and how many of you are carrying Nokias around these days? Exactly, none of us.
