My phone insurance expires today since I cancelled it (£9.99 pm, damage, theft, etc) as I was going to change to a slightly better deal at £8.99. I do have two backup phones, HTC diamond and HTC artemis if I need them. With the monthly expense and £30 excess in the event of a claim or £60 excess if I claim twice within 6 months, is it still really important to insure it?
The other thing is, if my phone is lost or stolen, what would happen to all my contacts and calendar backups on google calendar and google contacts once I cancel the phone/sim card, as I won't then have an android phone to access them.
For that reason, I suppose it makes it more important to have insurance so I can get a replacement android phone, ie, the SGS2 again?
I guess I'm almost answering my own questions, but would like to know how importantly some of you take insurance.

What does that mean?
the google info you can access online without a phone if necessary. having insurance isn't enough. you need insurance that will actually pay out when you need it and not have stupid claused that negate every possibility of when you'll need to make a claim
You can Use Samsung Dive to clear your stuff if lost or stolen, and your google contacts are safe in google account which you can access through pc as well.
I never liked insurance, as now you can remote wipe phones if lost
Samsung has - Samsung Dive
HTC has - HTC sense.com
WP7 - has a similar one as well via Zune I think
Apple - has via Itunes is it
got a 24 month contract with my sgs2, so yeah insured

Insurance is a bet £500 to whatever the payment is .In your case £120 a year .
Rather than spend the £120 i stand the risk myself mainly due to price for the amount risked far to high .
jje
So if I wipe the phone, you're saying I can still access all my calendar appointments and contacts so I can at least type them into my old windows 6.1 phones?
Is samsung dive some free app I need to download?
And finally, are you saying that you personally wouldn't be that bothered about not having insurance to be able to give you a replacement £500 SGS2 in the event of losing it?
My contract is 18 months and my next upgrade is nov 10th next year. I'm trying to decide if I could happily live without a replacement SGS2 and just go back to my diamond til my next upgrade.
all your data is there in "the cloud" and accessible online. log into your gmail and all the links are there.
i'd have insurance for the loss of the phone but just be wary. most are essentially scams as they cover you in insanely weird in what they pay out on

Cool.
Well, the insurance company I'm considering are the ones T-Mobile, my carrier, use. £8.99 a month, only minimum 3 month contract, £60 excess for first month, £30 for following months, £60 excess if 2 claims in 6 months. Not tied to any contract, no even after I claim. The insurance I just cancelled tied me to 18 months contract in the event of a claim, hence why I cancelled them. So, based on that info, would you say that's a reasonable deal?
nope.
very few are decent. some have clauses that dont cover for when you leave a phone in a public place, or in a location not covered by the manufacturer. so if you leave it on a train, or put it in the washing machine - neither are covered
heard the O2 one is decent
I cancelled the insurance that got bundled with my contract.and registered my phone with my bank account(natwest) which offers me free mobile insurance. Nit sure if every type of bank account offers that though.

Ah, thanks for reminding me of bank insurance. Yeah, I'd completely forgotten that my bank, barclays, had given me a leaflet on phone insurance. It says 'this policy is provided as a benefit of you being a qualifying account holder'. I wonder if that means it's free? They let me have 2 claims a year. The policy comes into effect 7 days after registration. I'll check it out at the bank tomorrow, I might be saving myself a bunch of money!
edit: right then, I rang the barclays number and got a very helpful bunch of replies from the man. He said I need to open the new account which costs £5 a month to keep open, and that £5 includes the insurance. He said it would be the same for for you and your nat west account, that your free insurance is based on paying to keep an account open. Everything else I asked him got favourable replies so I'm gonna go ahead and do that tomorrow when I pop into the bank. Can't go too far wrong at £60 a year.
I have insurance on mine.... at $20 per year I could not refuse to go for it.
Where from? www.anwb.nl for peeps in The Netherlands
Only downside:they do a linear % write-off to $0 in 3 years, and when it's worth less than 50% - so after approx 18 months- I would not get a full refund if lost or stolen (or broken), but the calculated %. But in a year and a half I won't mind anyway.
Not that I have ever broken or lost a phone, but at 525 euro these SGS2's are a bit expensive not to have insurance for it....

does getting insurance make sense?
and if so, verizons $8/month-$89 deductible, or square trades $6/month-$50 deductible?
on paper it looks like no reason not to go square trade, but if there are caveats any of you know about, please let me know.
Thanks.

Go for it... I wound up using it twice in a month and they sent me a brand new phone both times with NO hassle at all.
Of course they canceled me after the second replacement (per the agreement - 2 replacements a year).
bishop,
Is that two replacements per year per phone or per account?
We have three phones on our account.
you can use 'lovemom' coupon code

so 4 replacements over the course of the warranty not exceeding 2 every year.
sounds like a good deal.
what is the 30 day exclusion thing that i read on the squaretrade faq page
"Exclusions: There is a 30-day exclusion window after you first purchase your item."
what does that mean?

nice thanks, i also found another one
THIRTY30 for 30% or 30 whichever is lower.
The 30 day exclusion means you can not submit a claim until 30 days after you purchase the warranty. I bought a titan on eBay and got the square trade warranty. Within a month the keyboard starting getting flaky, and then quit working altogether. I just used another phone until the 31st day.
It looks like square trade makes you pay the entire 2 year fee upfront. Is that correct? I notice on the iPhone plan, you can pay monthly.
I have never purchased the insurance for my cell phones, and never had occasion to wish I had. With the money I've saved on three lines through the years I could buy two Incredibles at retail.

yes ive never destroyed a phone either, so all the insurance i saved in the past is good. but insurance protects against future unforeseens and not what did not happen in the past. that is why we have car insurance, even though most people dont have accidents, and health insurance.

I had a similar scenario with my secondary line and VZW re-instated my insurance when I bought a new phone then dropped me a month later. They refunded me but stated that Asurion would not accept my policy due to the fact that I had to be "dropped" for 12mo.
I just read the fine print. I'm sticking with VZW's insurance because they cover loss. Square Trade says "Please note that SquareTrade does not cover loss" which doesn't work for me. I've lost a phone fishing, I've had a phone stolen, and I dropped a phone in a sewer once. I need phone replacement after losing it

that is a good use case for verizon. here is the breakdown now that i understand it fully
Verizon(Asurion)
Cost: $192 for 2 years (pro-rated every month)
Cancellation: whenever
Deductible: $89
Coverage: Defect, Damage and total loss.
Exclusions: Nothing really.
vs.
SquareTrade
Cost: $144 for 2 years (-$40 with 'lovemom' code) pay upfront
Cancellation: whenever with remaining charge refunded.
Deductible: $50
Coverage: Defect and Damage
Exclusions: first 30 days.
If you want to save a lot of money, will not destroy it in the first 30 days (wait until after to submit a claim), and are not going to lose it, then SquareTrade wins hands down.
Mostly people who are afraid of losing their phone need Asurion.
Thanks for the breakdown, saved me having to read through Squaretrade's policy. I just picked up two DI's, and one is for my wife, who can lose anything. Looks like ST is out.
i just add my phone as a rider on my renter's insurance...
i have a lot of things itemized already, and it's a $0 deductible, and probably bumps my premium (for a $530 phone) by about $5/year...
Had good result with Asurion
I had to replace my i910 some how it stopped working. (another story)
Walked out with a Omnia O2
I may save a few bucks with Square Trade but VZW and Asurion stepped up to the plate. Insurance is protection against unplanned catastrophic loss. (I'm a Flashaholic)
How much is peace of mind worth ???
Go for the Asurion....
PS Incredible in my future !!!!
I still think 90 bucks is steep for a deductable, not to mention that is in addition to the 8 bucks/month, 96/year... I'd rather pay an extra 70 bucks to reduce the 2 year to 1 year contract renewal, and take my chances that for 10 months the phone will be OK. Then have the option to keep going or upgrade to something new. Not to mention, you are already covered under warranty for 1 year so essentially all your paying for is accidental damage/loss (which i agree is a lot but so is the deductable and monthly charge)

by flashaholic I suppose u mean u constantly flash the rom, which can brick your phone. that is not explicitly but covered with square trade if u dont tell them u willingly bricked the phone. ST simply doesnt cover losing the phone, like for example ejecting it into space with terminal velocity, or theft. if ur phone bricks, just send it in and receive a brand new one.
unless u lose your phone for good, or are stolen, ST ftw. read good reviews about them too, i dont feel like paying asurion so much more just to cover a corner case of theft.
I use the insurance that comes with the phone. Company pays for it. Paying full pop because a phone is lost/broken or stolen is not fun.
I was wondering if i were to bill this phone to my account would i have to pay it in full the next month or could i go maybe three months paying it off in installments

You can set it up to pay in installments but it depends if you're even eligible to get a phone billed to your account. Some accounts are not eligible at all (depends on credit) and some with a spending limit must be with Sprint for 18 months without outstanding payments to become eligible. While customers with good credit or long standing Sprint customers have no problems at all.
Most areas will NOT allow you to bill this or the EVO to your account because the phone is in such high demand, and people just aren't paying for it and going into collections. Sad but true.
I have had three phones billed to my account but I always paid in full the following month since I'm not due for a upgrade and the phones $500 I would rather pay installments than that big chunk of money thanks for the help

No store can decline billing a phone to an account, so if you were told no, you need to report that store/manager.
Actually, you're incorrect there. The ability to bill to an account is based on the credit code that is assigned to the account at the time of creating it. This credit code is based on previous credit history. If you have a spending limit at all, you won't be eligible for it. If your credit improves and you have good payment history on your account, you may be able to have the finance department see if they can adjust your credit code, though they may have changed that.

You're also wrong. It's based off your credit score when you first open an acct. After 18 month of service and 12 month of no late payments it can be removed. Manual credit (not finance) CAN remove it under very special circumstances if you do not meet the 18/12 rule. Some spending limit accounts DO allow billing to account, though extremely rare and believe it or not there are a ton of non-spending limit accounts that do not allow billing to account. All accounts under 90 days are considered no billable as well.
I was referring to a store declining billing to account because of the phones "high demand" just like the customer who called me a few days ago saying he was declined because the phone is in such high demand that they will only sell to local area codes. Completely false and illegal to be honest.
Actually it occurs to me that you probably meant that a store couldnt deny bill to account just because of the modelof phone. Sorry about that. You're right there

Yeah I get them done all the time, generally the basic rule is, you can have a few late payments, maybe 5 or 6 but no hotlines/suspensions and they will remove the ASL from the account... of course a lot more goes into it, payments vs adjustments, acct tenure, number of lines, etc.
Also, it will be fully charged to your account if your account can be billed. I've yet to see an account that is partially charged for multiple months to make the total price up. The best way to do this to give yourself the most time to pay it off is the day of or the day after your billing cycle starts (mines the 13th, so 13th or 14th for me) so you have a full month, plus the time to process the bill, plus the time until its due, plus the automatic 10 day grace period after the due date that you get without any late payment penalties, which will add up to almost 2 full months.
I did a bta with one of my previous phones and had bta a bunch of accessories too. About a week or two after the bill was past due, the finance dept called and started leaning on me hard. I told them that I was going through some financial tough times with the car being repaired recently and trying to get the cell bill up to date. They didn't care. That pissed me off royally.
I tore into the girl on the phone and told her to look up in her records for how long I've been a sprint customer. I've been with them for over thirteen years and you are treating me like a deadbeat scumbag? They said we need xxx amount paid in like two or three days or it will go to the collections department. I was irate!
I told her I would pay what I can, when I can and it's impossible for me to pay that amount in that short of time. She asked if I could borrow the money from someone. At this point, she was just throwing more gas on the fire with me.
I told her that she could do whatever she wants, that I don't care anymore. If you want to turn this into collections, go right ahead because you WILL lose me as a customer! I told her if she wanted to turn my phone off right then, to go ahead and save the trouble of doing it in a few days.
Does that answer your question about if they will "finance" or let you make payments?
If they let you bill to account, ask yourself if you know for a fact that you can pay your monthly bill plus the cost of the phone in thirty days or less (no sweat), then go for it. If not, save up for it and buy it when you have the money in hand.

Yes... because it was her fault that you're going through financial issues and car issues but you decided to buy a new phone... smart one on your part eh? I'll tell you the same thing I tell everybody, this is a "FOR PROFIT" business, pay your bill you get service, you don't pay your bill, your service get's shut off, it's as simple as that. They did allow you to do a payment arrangement, however you just did not agree with the terms. Next time you're having financial issues, spend $50 on a ****ty phone instead of $200 on a device you can't afford. (Don't take this personally)

I have to say my experience was different, I put a Moment on my account about a year ago and asked if it was ok if I paid half this month and half the next they had no problems as long as my call bill was kept up to date they could put a note on the account. Paid my phone bill in full + half the Moment then next month paid the bill again with the second half and never had an issue. Then again I never went delinquent with the primary contract that might be the difference maybe.

Not sure about the 18 month thing. I have only been with Sprint since last November, and have been billing to my account since day 91. Pre, hero, and the evo. No problems. I'm also eligible for up to 10 lines, so don't know what kind of credit code I have.

Yes, all accounts within their first 90 days can not have anything billed.
So, just to clarify - if I'm a new customer, switching to Sprint for the Epic, I wouldn't be able to bill it to my account, correct?

Hi guys,
Should be getting my Desire HD sometime next week if all goes to plan (super excited ). I have bought it sim free online so it's cost me £470 and as you can imagine I'd like to protect this investment against any mishaps.
I've been looking around at phone insurance and there seems to be a decent choice out there. Just thought I would get your opinions before purchasing any.
I can't get insurance from my provider (o2) cause I'm on a sim only tariff and would like to keep it that way and my phone isn't covered in my house insurance policy. So I would like any recommendations on any phone insurers. I am based in the UK (so need a UK insurer).
I just want it to cover all the basics really such as theft, liquid damage, accidental damage etc. etc. Loss cover would be nice but it is not a must.
Thanks

Sorry I forgot to mention that, I bank with HSBC. I checked with them and they do not offer a separate phone insurance or belonging insurance other than that covered in their home insurance policy (and I don't insure my home with them).
Add it to your house insurance who will insure it for Cover both in and out of house mine for the year extra was 6euro

HSBC do have phone insurance package as I had this few years ago and I claimed. Over all experience was very quick and with in 3 weeks I had 450 in my bank. I'm currently with natwest and have advantage blue package that gives me phone insurance for phones worth upto 750 and I pay £6.95 a month. I would recommend going with HSBC but if thy don't do it no more open a current account with natwest and ad a advantage blue package. End of the day ya don't have to use the bank. Or insure ya phone at ccpclaims this is the company natwest use for there advantage blue package.

why would you need one? if in some cased you broke your phone and the price of fixing it exceed the price of buying new one, then just buy a new one, or if it was less then fix it. i'm sure it wont cost more than the amount of money you eventually going to pay for the insurer.
Personally i use fonesafe, its £5.99 a month and they guarantee a new phone to your door in 24 hours.
If you don't mind waiting a little longer you can try:
http://www.insureandgo.com/phone-insurance.html
They have excellent customer service, and the claim will be dealt with reasonably fast, although it breaks, they will try to repair the phone rather than replace it (they will replace if it cannot be repaired).
Whomever you go with though you must be EXTRA careful to both read the policy in full and keep the insurance people up to date with your details. If you miss out anything important or do not claim in time etc you are VERY likely to lose your claim. Having said that, if you are mindful you wont have an issue
J
No end: Insurance covers against loss/theft AND accidental damage. In my opinion it is well worth it, i pay £140 over the course of the handsets life (2 years), during that time i dont have to worry about losing or breaking it (my two biggest worries), that peace of mind is worth it in my opinion. Naturally, opinions differ!

well the cost of the phone is £470...the cost of insurance is about £5-£8 a month (£60-£96) a year. Insurance doesn't just cover breakage though, it will cover the phone against theft and the more expensive packages (£7-8) cover it in case you lose your phone. Liquid damage is also something it covers and being in the rainy UK you just never know...2 years ago my phone got destroyed because I was walking on the side of the road and got splashed by a passing bus driving through a puddle.
I realise that being Bahraini things work differently out there (I used to live in the UAE) so phones are a lot cheaper (no VAT) and that things such as theft and rain are less common so insurance isn't even considered
i have my student home insurance with endsliegh. phone insurance was £24 FOR THE YEAR and covers loss, accidental damage (inc water damage), and theft. replacement within a week. awesome.
asked my parents and they said their phones are covered by their home insurance for pennies, so it might be worth asking your home insurance company first.
let say i'm in bahrain, and my phone got stolen, how they would be sure that it is stolen??

Well here in UK you'd have to call the police and report it stolen and tell them how. If you left it in your car which was unlocked and left it on the seat for everyone to see then obviously the insurance company would not pay out as it was incompetence on your part. But if they smashed a window and took it from the glove box then it would say that in the police report and the insurance company should cover it. The same applies for if its taken from your house or if it stolen of you directly...most important thing is to report it and get the crime report from the police.
I'm buying a Galaxy S II sim free when it's release and want to insure it.
Have you guys/gals got any recommendations of where to insure it. I'm UK based.
i know CPW provide geek insurance if bought from their store for around £12.99 per month but have seen a number of internet based insurers quoting around £6 per month but which of them are legit. Am also looking for laptop insurance too.
House insurance is not an option as i live in shared accommodation.
Would be greatful if anyone can help from their experiences.
Thanks in advance

Does your bank provide it with your account?
I know some do, so it might be worth checking it out.
12.99 is crazy money a month, no way i would go for that.
IMO, £12.99 per month is way too much to insure the phone. I know the phone is valued around about £500, but still...
Also, you will probably have to pay an excess fee of about £100 on top of that if you make a claim.
I'm probably going to upgrade my standard LloydsTSB bank account to the "Silver" account. It costs £2 per month for the first 2 months and then £7.95 per month after that.
It includes:
- Mobile phone insurance (repair or replacement up to £2000, accessories up to £250) and covers Loss, theft and accidental damage
- AA Breakdown cover
- European Travel insurance
+ some other stuff too...
Check it out with your own bank before you buy insurance from CPW.
Thanks guys, will give the CPW insurance a miss for sure.
Will check out the Lloyds suggestion as I'm not too sure about using internet insurance companies as they may be cheap but who knows the hassle if you have to claim.
mines £6.95 through natwest they use a company called ccp . co. uk.
very good tbh i claimed last year and i had full handset price given to me, only have to pay £25 access.
you dont have to go through the bank just search for that company
lloyds silver account provides free insurance for 1 mobile phone but the excess is 50 . i personally wouldn't bother with insurance, warranty for a year is good enough for me.

Just checked out CCP, they seem to have changed their T&C, they only cover up to £400 and excess is now £50.
Thanks for the info anyway mate.
other insurance options
I am not sure if these guys are reliable, but its worth a look http://www.betterbuyinsurance.co.uk . Between 20 and 50 pounds for a year depending on the amount of coverage.

They seem to be the same company as these http://www.insurance2go.co.uk/ , with the same address and registered company details.
I did try to email BetterBuy but the email bounced back as no such user so I assume Insurance 2 Go are the latest incarnation of the company
