I have a few questions about bricking and what to do with a bricked device (my device is not bricked just curious) . If the devices brick is there an easy to use program or GUI that could be created to unbrick the device, also how hard is it to brick the device.

Anyone? Also a few questions for root how easy is it to unroot is it as simple as just restored the original backup that is told to be made when flashing a custom rom?
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
No, there is no easy to use GUI tool. The process of unbricking a device isn't quite easy (depending on how your device is bricked).
If someone contacts me with a bricked device, I usually prepare all needed files so that the user just have to click some "recover.bat". This worked for 18 devices up to now.
Common mistakes that lead to a bricked device:
- Modifying boot AND recovery without calling itsmagic before
- Manually restoring a backup without calling itsmagic before
Sadly there is one case that I currently cannot handle: The device does not save any data to the flash memory. Might be an HW issue..
Right and the issues without calling itsmagic that wouldn't happen if we use thor recovery right?

Hi all neva flashed a custom rom before and was hoping to try so my question is can I flash a rom directly using my phone without the need to use a pc atall any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

Principially yes, but I would not(!) recommend it. Especially installing a new recovery.img and/or radio.img is more save using fastboot, which needs a pc.

wierd u mention that, i used the phone to flash radio.img. through the recovery console. cant remember the commands tho
Id like to try and I have a spare g1 to try it on first its just the guides are a bit hard for me to follow
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
Yes you can flash the radio.img using an update.zip file and flash it through recovery, but this in certain circumstances may cause a brick. Using fastboot is more save.
I get what ur saying m8 hence the reason id try it on my spare g1 it would just be easier for me as couldn't even get adb working before lol I'm useless
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
toon, how about working out why ADB doesn't work? it's much more pleasant to be able to copy/paste commands which reduces alot of headache and chance of mistakes.
do you have a computer and data cable?
Yeah I do m8 tho gonna need some help

Will temp root work or do you have to perma root?
Do we have a guide for flashing custom ROMs yet? I see a guide on ROOT and S-OFF, but have no idea what these mean. Again, new to Android (from WM 6.5.5).
I never temprooted, did permroot immediately, but I would assume any type of root will do for TB.
You can always test it out, it's not like it's going to do any damage.
There's a billion guides outthere...every custom ROM so far I see comes with flashing instructions.
The only truly risky thing you can do is flash HBOOT with S-OFF.
For majority of your needs just rooting will do as it allows you to run programs with superuser priviledges, while flashing new HBOOT is for more advanced stuff (as it allows you to write to system partitions (S-OFF means Security OFF), and you can brick a phone very easily.
p.s.
New to Android since last week also, you just have to do some reading...it's all available on Google!
Before I flash my At&t tab I am looking for a good backup of firmware.
I am new to android/samsung
For backup i found
ROM manager app
Is that all i need for backup? Before I try messing my tab.
I guess i need do backup of efs folder as well. (rooting, copy)

Go to the development section and look for clockwork recovery for the tab.

Lookink into thread clockwork I have chosen not to use. Too unstable.
I Will try rotohamers approach I found thanks the clokcwork thread.
That means using dd looks to me clean solution. Now I Will do some dumps and then I am going to do some research how to do it Without z4root. I need to learn to use all the tools/modes like what is adb, recovery mode, odin, kies drivers.

Finally someone who gets it! Doing research will give you the best results. Now that there is a reconstructed at&t firmware, you just need to do the backups for your own safety. You will need to root somehow, z4root happens to be the easiest way, and its easily uninstalled.
I have not been able to flash back my dumps and get my system back to the exact state it was at dump time, but i can restore it such that after restoring my Titanium backup, everything works perfect as it was. Thats good enough for me at the moment.
I has always been afraid of hacking the phone. Can I screw things up so badly that it can't be fixed? Or is there always a way to get the phone back to factory? Thanks
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Most of the time a SBF flash will get you back to factory settings but if you do something really risky like format your internal memory you can lose your touchscreen

Before unlock bootloader
Softbricks - yes (can usually restore to factory somehow)
hard bricks aka adios phone - unlikely
unlocked bootloader-
hard bricks are more of a possibility if you unlock your bootloader
Alright, so I got a Nexus 7 for x-mas (my first and only android device) and I love it. Recently i have been wanting to root but information/explanation has been hard to come by. So, I have a few questions.
1. When i received the device i did not unlock bootloader, after reading about unlocking it it seems that this wipes all the data from the device. How do i backup my apps/data/storage? If i copy all the files to my CPU and then copy them back to the nexus will it work? What about app settings, like my settings on Apex launcher? I've seen threads and apps that recover data after it is deleted? What's my best bet for backing my info and data up?
2. What is the difference in flashing a kernel and rooting an android? Are they the same? As far as i know flashing is reversible, but is rooting?
3. How do you root? I've seen things about utilities (nexus 7 toolkit) and I've seen things that just involve unlocking the bootloader (flashing? i think)
Sorry if these questions have been answered or this is the wrong spot for this, I'm new to the forum.

1) You can't really do a backup of app data before unlocking the bootloader, that's why it's recommended to do it right when you get. I have to wipe everything so i know how you feel.
2) Inorder to flash a kernel you need to root first.
3) You could use a toolkit to unlock and root( either nexus 7 toolkit or wugs') or if you want to unlock and root manually you can use adb, which is just a few commands for a nexus. Both are easy, the only hard part is making sure you have the correct drivers.
Hope i helped and good luck!

Dang, that really sucks. What all can i save? App permissions, any of that?
I was just looking around and noticed there are some Apps that save data/info, the ones i saw were Carbon and TWRP. Would i be able to save my app stuff that way?
TWRP is a custom recovery which you can use AFTER unlock and root and i have never used carbon so i wouldnt know.

I don't own a tablet, but I am a beta tester for a few projects here, I have to wipe all data, but the cool thing is after the first initial wipe, you never have to worry about that again.
A backup of your non-rooted device, I would say do your best with titanium backup, need an easier program? Try go backup pro or Clickfree backup.
Then try to restore. If it fails, retry.. I got that a lot, most game data saved is usually stored in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data or /mnt/sdcard/Android/obb
You can store that info on an external SD, using directory bind, you can find it on here, very good app if your phone/tablet sucks because its internal storage is 3.75gb. my dual partitioned and mounted 64gb sdcard works wonderfully, my games get 16gb to themselves.
Anyway to stay on topic, I want this, but also looking at an Asus, and a Samsung galaxy tab 2

CM 10.1 JB - thanks thegreatergood

First of all, TWRP can only be used after unlocking boot loader and unlocking wipes all data
I also unlocked boot loader after 2 months when I have many apps, so it is simple you copy all the data to your PC and you can do a backup of your apk's by sending them to a Bluetooth device by the help of a app ( Bluetooth file transfer) , you unlock the boot loader and send all apks back either by Bluetooth or by using stick mount when you are rooted , and restore all data,
Flashing a kernel requires to root first
You can either root by using root toolkit or by using adb fastboot method manually
Here is the link to a post of mine for rooting nexus 7 by adb fast boot method

Good luck,if you are unable to root or having any problem, reply and I will look into it

flash kernel and root are two different things.
after unlocking the boot loader, you can flash anything you want, including an already rooted system image.
