installation issues with apks - Epic 4G General

I can install from the market okay but if I have a .apk on my sd card I want to install I get the message that it cannot. Tells me the file cannot be viewed from here. Here is the exact words:
sdcard/download/amazon_appstore-release.apk
application/vnd.android.package-archive does not work.
Any ideas? This is getting frustrating and my searches have not turned out anything worthwhile.

Have checked the option for installing 3rd party apps in settings

Maybe just reflash the package installer .apk from your rom

You could always try using adb to push the package from your PC to the phone while connected with USB debugging enabled.
adb install <package_file_name>

Tried to Root...

New Member here,
I tried to root without success. Downloaded file, placed in sd card directory, successfully rebooted into recovery and launched file. Was notified it was a success and phone rebooted properly.
However, Titanium is telling my phone is not rooted and I cannot seem to mount my phone anymore to re-try the process. (deleted the file and need to replace it)
Any thoughts would be appreciated. The phone seems to be fine otherwise.

Downloaded what file?
update.zip.
Titanium seems to be working now (despite telling me over and over that debugging isn't enabled for development while it is : /)
Mounting still isn't working...not sure what to do about that. Are we unable to mount while USB debugging is enabled?
To root my phone I downloaded "One Click Root" to my PC. Put the contents in to a folder and then click the .exe file. Make sure your Vibrant is plugged in and then click the one click root button.
You need to make sure you have the latest Samsung driver installed and Microsoft .NET Framework 4 before you try to root.
It's as if my computer cannot see the phone anymore because it's rooted? I connected it to the computer and it thought it needed to install drivers...which of course there are none. I've used the computer numerous times to mount, so this is bizarre.

Make sure debugging mode is not selected and when you plug your phone in to the pc does your phone give you an option on how to connect to your pc?
Yeah thanks ....Through trial and error ...and a usb driver reset program...something made it work again.
Now dare I try and install ROM? : D

Sure. Make sure you are rooted by downloading OCLF from the market. This will let you know if you are rooted or not. Make sure you have clockworkmod "rom manager" installed. Put the rom on the root of your phone (do not unzip it) and use rom manager to install it. Do a backup of your phone first. Should be good to go.
Thanks Lethal....
This is going smoothly and am now making a back up of my phone
Let us know what ROM you decide to go with. Nero v3 is the new hotness.

Hey no problem. I am happy I was able to help you out.
I chose Axura. I've successfully installed but I have no widgets besides messaging, market & maps.
How do I restore Dialer, Contact, etc widgets?
How do I access an applications list besides the manager?
How do I restore my apps that I backed up through titanium...do I reboot? I just don't want to screw it up
I chose ADW if that makes any difference
It's already amazing how much faster and responsive the phone is!
UPDATE: I've switched to Launcher Pro...and things look better. So basically I just need to know to restore contacts, apps, etc

All thanks to the generous people of this forum I went from rooting to ROM installation in a few hours. Thank you!

When you download all your widgets and apps you want, you will want to download Titanium Backup which is great for backing up everything. If you decide to flash to a new rom or an updated rom you can simply restore all of your apps and widgets easily. Contacts as well if you chose not to store them to your sim card.

You can move files to the USB storage and install from there. You will need a file manager though, not sure how to get that installed wiithout a net connection.

Put the file on the storage drive. Then using the file manager go to the file and click on it, install. You should get a a pop up saying its blocked, go to settings/applications/check unknown sources. You should be able to install after that.

[Q] Connected as installer?

When I plug my phone in to my PC, it always comes up with this "Connected as Installer" Verizon crap. It mounts a disc on my PC. Is there a way to disable this or have it go straight to the MTP storage? I know it goes to MTP after about 15 seconds but that's not the point. Verizon shouldn't force this "installer" every time you plug in your device. I've disabled all of the Verizon bloat already and it still opens a drive that has Verizon installers. I've searched but it seems there haven't been any topics on this yet.
Thanks!
Is it trying to install something on the pc? Maybe just let it install it and it won't do it again, if that's the issue. My T-Mobile G2 asked to install LG stuff when I first connected it and after the 3rd time I let it install and that was that but the LG programs are helpful at least.

It's trying to install some Verizon Mobile crap that I definitely don't need/want. I haven't found a setting that sends it straight into MTP mode. When it mounts the Verizon Mobile installer, I've tried to delete the contents from the drive on the PC but it doesn't let me. Not sure what else to do. I'm sure every other Verizon LG owner has this happen too...right? RIGHT!?
It's a driver installer that you do need...select on the phone what you want or to do.

Right. I know I can choose what I want on the phone. How do I get it to stop coming up with the installer? I have the driver already.

What's particularly awesome about this, is that I can't connect to my car via USB anymore. The phone thinks the car is a computer, tries to mount a partition, car won't let it, and it errors out. Thanks Verizon!
found it...
this is the file
/system/usbautorun.iso
delete this or if you want to keep these divers as backup, you can rename this file.

I deleted it and now it just mounts and when I click it, it says insert a disk into drive. I know its the right one. When I unplug my phone it goes away. I have mtp mode clicked on my phone but in notification it says connected as installer
negative

App Problem

*Not sure if in proper section, move if need be*
Noob here so try to dumb things down for me!
Ok, so I followed this tut HERE.
I was able to debug it to my android for testing and it worked. So I exported it as .apk and uploaded it to 4shared.com.
Now my problem is, after downloading to my phone, I went to [Install Package] and it said "Application not installed"
What would be the problem and how would I go about fixing it?
Thanks in advance
~Brine
How are you trying to install the app:
connect your device using USB cable to the comp. and run
Code:
adb install <path_to_apk>
on a terminal
Make sure that the app is not already installed as there could be certificate conflicts it a debug version is installed already. If some version is already installed, just uninstall it and try.
Also try enabling Settings > Security > Unknown sources (turn it off after you are done if you are not sure)

Use this command to get your root changes to persist after a reboot

Thanks and all credit to Nameless One for the heads-up!
As found here - run this adb command to get changes to survive a reboot:
Code:
adb shell reboot disemmcwp
It seems there's system write protection enabled. That command will disable it. I changed my DPI and emojis and can confirm that both changes stuck!

Nice find, I'll be adding this thread to my Guides / Info Thread....
Thank you dude
Cool Awsome!! Now my phone is working properly with ROOT.
Is this step still needed? Been following the links on DrakenFX's thread that lead me here.
Thanks guys. The dev is much appreciated as is the guide pulling everything together.

Whether it is done by a script (if so there should be clear indication that it does this so people know where they stand in the overall process) or by hand it still needs to be done, it is a completely separate issue from whether or not the boot-loader is unlocked or the phone rooted.
Already did it. :cyclops:
Is this only needed if your bootloader is locked but you still wanna root ?
Ugh, so this was the reason why I couldn't uninstall system apps even w/ a system app uninstaller....
So developer unfriendly :/
Haha needed to do this on the official root for EU as well.
Yay, thanks guys! got adaway running. Starting to feel like home again..now to backup it before I screw it up..
I'm not getting it to work on my Axon 7 rooted with terminal emulator

Boot into A7, enable developer options and enable USB Debugging, connect to computer, accept the computer's debugging signature on your A7 (if you've never gotten a pop-up that you've had to accept, it's not connected properly), type in "adb devices" in a command prompt to make sure that the device is showing up, and if it is, issue the OP's command.

When I plug the phone into the laptop, the phone has a popup that sks me which mode I want to use the phone.
I choose Media device MTP. I also tried the mode called connect to PC software. Both times, the phone is recognized by ADB.

Go into the app's permissions list and make sure that the Storage permissions is allowed.
If that doesn't work, then try using a different app all together.

Doesnt work..
I am thinking the problem is that ZTE put a lock on system files so no one can delete them or modify them.
There is suppose to be some kind of way to turn that off but I cant seem to do it on my phone.

Did you do this permission fix before or after root? did you use an emulator to do the fix or adb?
