Hi guys,
I picked up an SGSII from Expansys and it runs no problem on Fido up in Canada. I'm taking a trip down to the US next month and was wondering which of the big carriers in the states would run the SGSII. I figure AT&T would, but as the phone is quad-band, I'm not 100% sure if there are other national carriers that would do the trick.

Of the major US carriers, it will work on ATT and T-Mobile. It will only get 3g on AT&T as the SGS2 doesn't support TMO's 3g bands.
Hmm. I'm a little confused. The wikipedia page for T-Mobile says that their 3G bands are 2100MHz and 1700MHz. The SGSII apparently has 2100MHz as one of the accepted frequencies (again according to wiki). How come 3G won't work on T-Mobile?
Presumably, the phone won't work on Verizon because, while the frequencies match, Verizon is running on CDMA and the SGSII only supports GSM. Right?

T-Mo US needs 1700 and 2100, not just 2100. Att uses 850 or 1900. 3G won't work on T-Mo
No matter what it says on paper, there's a couple of people here that have tried the phone on T-Mobile U.S and get EDGE speed downloads.

T-Mobile and AT&T are the only GSM carriers in the US. I don't know if Boost Mobile is or not.
I just picked a phone up unlocked on ebay and am using it on the AT&T network, only issue i've learnt of just now is AT&T uses a different band for the 3g than the touch dual does so i only recieve edge no 3g since its a different band, from what i've been told tmobile is offering it on the same band.

ATT operates on both 850 and 1900 bands. I had my niki working on it until I recently switched to TMobile. You're SOL if the ATT signal in your area is 850 because the Niki doesn't support it. TMobile doesn't us the 850 band so you would be better switching to them. I get a much stronger signal with them.

Niki doesn't support 1900 for 3g either though, how were you getting 3g if you don't mind me asking, maybe you have one of the Australia Versions? Probably gonna have to take your advice on switching, just on such a good rate plan only paying 24.99 for unlimited internet, hopefully a radio patch can help us soon or maybe AT&T and T-Mobile will share towers i know its been discussed between the companies in the past to help increase coverage (usually leads to merger though so i doubt it'll happen with such large corporations)

I read that ATT runs on 1900/850? Or at least 850? If I got an unlocked ATT Nexus one would it have both the 1900 and the 850 band?

And what, might I ask, is an "ATT Nexus one"? Nexus one is sold and branded by GOOGLE. It has UMTS 900/1700/2100. This is NOT the same as ATT frequencies, which are, as you mention, 850/1900.
The difference is that ATT has an EDGE network and GN1 supports EDGE at 850/900/1800/1900. BELUS does NOT.
If you want to use GN1 in Canada, I recommend you switch providers to WIND. Their rates are WAY better, and they run on UMTS 1700/2100, which is compatible with GN1.
I get a really *really* good deal with Telus. Unlimited data, more txt and minuets then ill ever use, all the extras (caller id, voice mail) and all for under $45. I make good use of the unlimited data via tethering.
Switching from telus isn't an option.
Oh, and sorry for calling it an ATT Nexus One, I was simply implying it was available on the ATT network, my mistake.
The version of the nexus one that works on ATT's 3g has not been released yet. It recently passed through the FCC, but AFAIK the only one available now is the T-mobile version.
You should be good though buying an ATT 3g version when they come out. Who knows maybe sales to Canada will be open by then.

Anyone getting the T-Mobile version tomorrow? With CDMA not SIM capable, and AT&T version still up in the air, I think I'm probably going to get one tomorrow!
I've got question regarding T-Mobile's werid 3G band tho. I think Samsung listed T-Mobile's version as AWS 1700/2100. I know 1700 is weird, but is that AWS 2100 same as the 2100 band that the rest of the world use? Sorry it's my first 3G T-mobile device, and looking on wiki or google is just kinda vague

I had a TMo US G1, and it worked fine on 3G when I returned to the UK. The converse was not true of my TMo UK G2 (HTC Hero), which would only get Edge in the US because it did not support both bands of AWS (1700/2100).
So, I see no reason why a TMo US shouldn't work pretty much everywhere else in the world where 2100 3G is ubiquitous.

Actually you're a bit off. Tmo's 3G runs on AWS 1700/2100 band which is not the same 2100 *frequency* as the rest of the world. Tmo uses 1700 for downloads and 2100 for uploads, so both bands (aws/band IV) are needed.
Now Europe (and rest of GSM world) use straight 2100 band for 3G but the exact frequency is not the same as Tmo's.
Basically a Tmo Galaxy Tab will only get you EDGE outside of the US. An ATT Galaxy Tab will get you 3G in the US and the rest of the world (as long as it's sim unlocked, ofcourse).

No, the T-mobile phones give you also 3G in Europe. All AWS chipsets do both Band I (2100) and Band IV (AWS 1700/2100).
I thought the galaxy tab is quad band, so you can simply swap your sim card with another european carrier and it should work on thier frequency
Am I wrong?

You're right for 2G, not for 3G
So getting the unlock code for tmobile device and putting AT&T sim card will not give me 3g connectivity (using AT&T network)?

One could say the same to you.
This is a link to T-Mobile US's support forum, in which someone has had it confirmed from T-Mobile themselves that all devices designed for their network have to be fully compatible with the 2100MHz band, meaning they will give you 3G capabilities in Europe.
Your previous post in which you claim that the 2100MHz band that T-Mobile use is not the same as the 2100MHz band the rest of the world uses is nothing short of ridiculous.
If the band T-Mobile used was different to the one used in the rest of the world, it would not be described as 2100MHz.

Sorry, but as I already said earlier in this thread, my T-Mobile US G1, which is an AWS device, worked perfectly well in the UK with full 3G. Similarly, I know of people who bought TMo Nexus Ones in the US, and these all worked fine in the UK.
That's not to say there isn't some subtle difference which not all chipsets can cater for, but it is certainly true that many TMo US handsets will give 3G capabilities in Europe.

The normal UMTS 2100 is called "Band I" and t-mobile's AWS is called "Band IV":

The AWS 3G module has already 2100MHz support, so there is no additional hardware necessary to support Band I as well. Theoretically it could be disabled, of course, but then T-mobile wouldn't be able to charge you an arm and a leg if you were to roam outside of the US

Both the AT&T tab and the T-mobile tab both work on both carriers if they are unlocked. You of course will not be getting 3g on the carrier opposite of what the tab was designed for. There are no tabs, or probably phones either for that matter, that will work on both the T-mobile AWS 3G bands AND the typical straight 2100Mhz 3g bands that AT&T and most of Europe operate on. One or the other.
Would it be safe to say the AT&T one is more likly to work with companys overseas?

They both work on European 2100MHz UMTS (after SIM-unlocking).

Essentially correct, but as far as I'm aware, AT&T don't use 2100MHz for 3G - it's 1900MHz and 850Mhz. In addition, both TMo and AT&T Tabs should work ok in Europe with 3G.

Nobody serves 2100MHz ONLY (UMTS) in the US. Its 1700/2100 AWS or completely different bands.
The TMoUS tab definitely works in Europe (after SIM-unlocking) because thats what I'm using right now

If S4 history repeats itself the ATT buyers will be stung with crappy locked bootloaders. Meanwhile the TMO device is pentaband and unlocked bootloader. Depending on battery life benchmarks the only sane decision is between TMO Note 3 and the international N3.

Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know which one would be compatible for Wind/Mobilcity (Aws Canadian Market)?
Note 3 from At&Tor T-Mobile... in the past I believe T-Mobile phones are compatible because of 1700 and 2100 frequencies... however due to T-Mobile refarming (I have limited knowledge about it) and new frequencies.... would an At&t note 3 be modified to work on aws

To my knowledge, the international Note 3 does not have LTE radios. It has an octacore instead of quad but thats the trade off.

There are two models: one is the octa-core with no LTE. The other is Snapdragon 800 with LTE. However, both will only get HSPA+ on AT&T (anywhere) and HSPA+ on T-Mobile (in refarmed areas). The international LTE model won't get US LTE because we don't use the same LTE bands as they do in Europe.
In the US, if you're on a GSM network the best model to get is the T-Mobile model, even if you're on AT&T. It works 100% with AT&T and T-Mobile (refarmed areas or not) and has an unlocked bootloader.

Do you know if the Tmobile Note 3 is pentaband (i.e., like the Nexus 4/5)? I'm planning to use it outside of the US and just need to know if it can get 3G in European countries.
A poster above mentioned that the Tmobile Note 3 version is pentaband, but googling for the answer to this has yielded no solid results.

Yes. 850/900/1800/1900 on EDGE, and 850/[900 isn't mentioned but I assume it's there]/1700/1900/2100 for HSPA+. It should work fine.
