[Q] Upgrade microsd card - can I just copy stuff? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all,
I want to upgrade the microsd card I'm using in my Nook Color to a larger size. I am running CM7 off the internal space, rather than the external card. I am pretty newbie at all this, and I need to know if I can just copy the contents of my old card to the new one & have it work? Pics & stuff I figure are fine, but what about installed apps? There are several on it. Do I need to re-install them or will everything copy over fine? I know it would not work for programs, but I don't know about apps.
I looked though all the threads I could find, but everything seems to be for running CM7 off the card & moving the entire shooting match.
Thanks for any help you can give.
RSD

as long as you haven't done some weird partitioning or changed the format to ntsf or something, you should be able to straight copy.

Wow. That was fast!
Thanks for the info. Formatted FAT32 with no partitions at all, afaik, so it sounds like I'm good.
Thanks again!

[Q] Changing from One SD Card to Another (with custom ROM)

I looked at some other threads, but none I've seen tell me if I'm going to need to redo the process w/ cyanogen.
Others were saying to copy and paste the contents of the old card to the other, will the Nandroid backup I have take care of it or do I need to just stick w/ Windows Explorer?
Also, after it's copied, will my Cyanogen still be on the phone (I thought the SD card was just storage)?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ok, I just got the card delivered and tried it out.
Like I was thinking, it's just storage, so copy the contents of the old card to the new, and you have those same directories...so no problems.

Just make sure you have your pc set to view hidden files/folders or those might be missed.

Finally upgraded my microSD card...questions

Semi Noob question.
I just am finally upgrading my SD card, bought a 16GB after using the stock since I got the phone. I had moved all apps to SD via Titanium backup, so...
1. Will copying the contents of the old SD over to the new one suffice or will other steps need to be taken after I put it in?
and 2. What is the idea setup as far as formatting goes, for Apps2SD, best performance, etc? Is there one way that's better than the others?
Worth noting that I'm on CM7 right now.

1. Should be fine.
2. I don't know if ext a2sd still works but 512mb ext3/4 with the rest fat32 works for me. No reason for swap.
A2Ext can still be used, if you partition via recovery it will wipe the SD card, so do that before copying stuff.

1. I would backup all the apps using titanium backup. I'm not too sure that moving them to SD is going to do it.
2. For Apps2SD, I have 512 megs ext 3 partitioned with no swap. I'd say go with ext3 because more roms are compatible with it...
I also upgraded from stock SD to a 16gb class 10 - all I did was copy all contents from one sd to the other. Everything worked right away.
Sure ain't like moving sd's in Symbian ... oh what a mess that was.

[Q] External SD - Tab no see it.....SOLUTION FOUND SEE OP

UPDATE well it looks as though I have found a solution to my woes. I made several attempts of formatting the 2gb card in my laptop to no avail. I tried my old captivate that it originally came out of and the cappy had troubles reading it. I then stuck it in my evo and it registered instant, so I did asdcard format on my evo and then finally the tablet registers the card. In case this helps anyone else
First off someone please enlighten me on the tabs use and the way it mounts the external SD, I read somewhere that it only uses it for media files such as music books and pics. I have an 8GB that belongs in my EVO, and a 2gb that I had for my captivate I was hoping to use in my Tab for now.
Here's my story, maybe someone can shed a little light here: My tab was purchased with Stock 3.1, I was getting annoyed by the constant update request so I went ahead and rooted and installed CWM without incident, then I decided to install the Stock rooted update from here, however when I insert my SD cards they say they are unavailable. So I stick my 2gb in my laptop format to fat32 (should this be different?, typically it works in every other device I own) It still won't read, I did exactly as others point out in other threads but still I am stumped as to how the card is made available to the OS ? Now in a fit of frustration I pulled my 8gb out of my evo put the 2gb in and wham there it is, I put the 3.2 download on the 8gb popped it in tab entered CWM and flashed the update, I don't know if the 2gb is mountable in CWM I will try tonight but the 8gb was mountable through CWM however my 8gb also was not available to Android even after the update.
So what the heck is the use of the external SD and how is it used?
I think you might have an issue with your ROM,
I use my external SD for my titanium backups and other files I want to keep portable. I have used the SD card through my PC via USB and directly by putting into the PC's card reader.
Have you tried using a file manager? I use File Manager HD and the external card shows up as Storage on the left bar.
As for the filesystem, I think I may have originally formatted as FAT but I have also pulled my SD out of my Blackberry and used it to install Honeylicious through CWM,
All in all I dont think you should be having the issues that you are having...
Good luck
If it won't mount in CWM you need to format it in your android phone, that fixed it for me. Once it is formatted correctly you'll see a notification that an SD card is installed. Also my PC wouldn't see it until I put a custom rom on. Also to store items on it you can use a file manager to move things to and from it.

The 8gb card did mount in CWM but would not mount in the OS, or when it would I would get it was unavailable or sometimes even empy when I know there is only about 1 gb free space, I did not test the 2gb in CWM mainly because it was late and I needed to go to bed, but I will try tonight. The 8gb is the one I updated to rooted 3.2 with, I still need to go to 3.2.1 ? Is there a rooted Stock 3.2.1 floating around I really havent looked much into it yet
I have noticed that getting the iconia to read some sd cards is like tossing dice..Most people who have this issue says one card works perfect in every device but not in the iconia.. Some say the card will work sometimes and not others .. Some say the card works in cwm and not with file manager..
The issue here i think is that you have two CARDS THAT ARE FUSSY ABOUT mating with the iconia. OR Your rom .i would read the threads in the rom you are using.. IF still nothing that sounds like your issue ask the DEV about this.. If STILL No luck you can either try to buy a new diffrent card or flash a new rom to try and Diag. this issue..
Good luck..
Silly question
Is your microSD formatted FAT32?
If it is anything else, your unit may have trouble reading it depending on what ROM you are using - Not all ROM's are capable of reading NTFS or other file systems.
Sometimes, microSD's freak out as well, and the only way to get it back to normal is to format it in a Symbian phone (Nokia)
Also, make sure you are using the correct mount point for the card - /mnt/external_sd - Root Explorer and other apps like it can get there.
Other than that, you may just have a bad microSD, I have had many of them die for seemingly no reason.

[Q] Super Noob CM7 Question Fun Time!

Hey everyone, this is my first post here. I just did my first cm7 root, via sd card image, and everything went fine except that I didn't partition it correctly, since it says ive only got like...32mb left on my 4gb sd card.
Is it too late to go back and complete that step? Or will it wipe everything and i'll have to start from scratch. I hope that's not the case, but I've only got room for one app -__-
Im not even sure this question makes sense...that's how much of a noob I am with this stuff.
If anyone can give me some advice, i'd greatly appreciate it!
Oh, also...no preloaded android market? How do I go about getting that?
Us the Mini Tool Resize function to increase the 31MB to include the unallocated memory.
How are you judging you only have 32MB space left?
If you have installed CM7 onto the SD card rather than internal then putting the card back into the PC will only show the boot partition which is small (normally around 114MB) but the rest of the card will be available for apps downloading.
As it sounds like you haven't got far with loading apps etc I would recommend actually repeating the install process from the beginning using the guide here as it is very quick to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
The VeryGreen installer will automatically partition the card for you appropriately and for a 4GB card will leave you with about 1GB for downloaded apps and over 2GB of space for media.
To get the market you need to flash the gapps package referred to in the guide.
For the base ROM I would actually use the KANG MiRaGe ROM as this has all the latest fixes in. Just make sure the zip is renamed to start with update-cm- before putting it on the VeryGreen card for the install.
Thanks guys! I'm going to go ahead and follow your advice bobtidey.
Much appreciated
I have a nice step by step in my signature (mainly because people kept having trouble with WinImage).

Space is all I want!

Hi all, so to start with, as the title says im constantly running out of space on the FN model 2015, so ive dived into the forum looking for help. First thing i tried was the sd card hack to combine my 64gb sdcard with the 8gb internal. Harra! it worked, but then i still run outa space as it dosen't seam to to use the sdcard space as i had hoped. It's like it just copys some of the data from the apps to the SD card like normal but without having to go into the each app and selecting external sdcard. Kinda thought no probs I'll download a custom rom with no samsung apps and with a min gapp giving me as much storage space i could get. I can't see one, starting to think there isnt one. So my question is, is it hard for me to take my backup of my stock rom and strip what I can out bearing in mind I'm a bit of a noob and have to follow instructions from the clever ROM makers? not to bothered about increasing the speed and looks just the space. Would be able nice to update them without having to delete a few and re-install the ones I deleted. Any advice on what coarse to take would be great. Maybe theres a ROM I've mist I could use and give thanks for?
Cheers

Hi,
Instead of using Adoptable Storage, make 2 partitions on your SD, 1 FAT32 for photos, music, documents and another EXT4 for apps data. Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd , i tested it.
You can make 2 partitions using PC or with TWRP Recovery.

Thanks for your reply! I went down the apps2SD route in the end. Kinda mest it up a bit but have free'd up nearly 1gb of space so thanks, that's more than enough! %) I ended up partitioning the SDcard and linking all the apps I'm not interested in, excel,Skype,Samsung etc. Anyway what i didn't realise was that i had mest the other part of the partition up. Ended up re-formatting the SDcard in recovery back to normal and those apps I didn't want 90% of the data of those have now been wiped %)
