Weird screen defect and reception problems - GT540 Optimus General

I just purchased the gt540 but noticed that at the bottom of the screen there is some backlight bleeding and if pressed at the buttom it gives feedback. (I don't mean the regular feedback buttons but the actual bottom screen)
It's almost like it's intended to make typing a comfortable experience but it's not as the pressing doesn't extend to the full length of the keyboard. I suspect the top layer hasn't been put on properly. (Note that I'm NOT using a protective screen layer)
I'm also dealing with weird reception issues like not receiving txt messages or phone calls sometimes. Browsing is a weird experience to:
The phone constantly shows a 3g icon with full reception. When I start browsing it takes a really long time for the page to load, but then whilst still loading the page i can see the 3g icon change to Hsdpa and the page is suddenly loaded. Downloading is also really fast when it finally is going, so the potential speed is there.
This is ALWAYS the case and it just seems really weird and out of the ordinary to me, like it's some stupid bug or setting issue.
I was thinking that it might be a rom issue but I'm using cyanogen 7 m6 which is considered stable right?
Oh and the battery is also showing weird behaviour, going from half full to completely empty, but I've heard that more people are experiencing battery problems.
I really love this phone but all the problems are drastically reducing the user experience.
Is anybody else dealing with these problems? I'm also really curious about my screen issue.
Thanks heaps

Flash and calibrate battery
I recommend you flash the latest ROM http://twitter.com/#!/MrMur4ik and calibrate your battery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12728721&postcount=1952. If you think it's a physical defect, you should get another phone.

You cannot flash 'latest ROM' without flashing fastboot first. Latest ROM is actually 2.1. (2.3 is unofficial, also you should have pointed to XDA Thread and not Mur4ik's twitter.) Also flashing a new ROM won't fix screen defects.

www.myGT540.com
There you go

No fastboot?
How did you update to Swiftdroid v2.0 M6? I used Mur4ik's Twitter account because the forum on this board is NOT by Mur4ik himself and it can be sometimes out-of-date. You can get the latest ROMs ASAP from Mur4ik's Twitter account. You should get a new phone as it has physical defects.

The new ROM

I am about to download and install the new .48 ROM, but what excatly did they fix?
Are people sending and recieving all sms'es and calls now?
Are the buggy volume control fixed?
What about the big waiting time when launching the messenger app with people who have a long sms-history?
As far as i am aware absolutely no issues whatsoever have been "fixed".
This "new" ROM is simply the latest version being shipped in worldwide devices.
The weekly calendar issue seems to be fixed.

I don't know what has been fixed and I can't comment on the problems you listed since I've never experienced them but I can tell you what works better for me:
1) the keyboard is much more accurate. I was reasonably happy with the keyboard on the last ROM but this one is much easier to use.
2) the proximity sensor now works every time I make or receive a call. This was a bit hit or miss for me with the last ROM and would fail more often than it worked.
3) Battery life seems much better. Again, I was pretty happy with this on the last ROM but it just seems to last a lot longer now. I had network issues today (nothing to do with the phone, it must have been a problem with 3 in London today because my 3G dongle was down as well) and was expecting my battery to die relatively quickly. However, despite this and the fact that I was playing with the phone more today (because of the new ROM) my battery is holding about 20% more than I would expect it to hold at this point in the day. I haven't bothered with the patch to turn off the data connection either so my phone should be doing more now.
I can't comment on much more. I experienced the new bug with the inbox and SenseUI but that was dealt with by locking the phone. I also had some trouble connecting to my Exchange server but that was dealt with with a couple of soft resets. Everything is generally going quite well.

I have installed the new 1.48 rom today.
and I don't think they fixed anything. I still got a red blob on my pictures. And I still wait up to 45 seconds for replying sms. When the sms-history is long.!!!
I've installed it today as well (dutch version). A pity that you 've to reinstall all apps. No prob for me, as I'm still try to explore the phone.
Anyway connecting, installing etc everything was flawless, even the link with Exchange.
hmm,.. well,.. no issues so far
I've flashed the .48 over my belgian HD2 yesterday using the goldcard approach, I've got to say that I've yet to see any real improvement or bugfixes,...
The lockscreen acted up for a while but then mended itself automagicly and has been a good boy since.
Opera seems more responsive but that could very well be just me fooling myself.
Same goes for the keyboard, I caught myself noting 'hey, this seems a bit more sturdy than before'. This can all be attributed to perception, though
It works and the itch to be up to date has been scratched.. all in all I'd recommend it.
where do i get this rom, offical site please
Is this an official ROM?
Where can this be downloaded? How do you flash it?
Get the ROM from links in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592954
Just installed it and personally think the touch screen is more accurate

Think or know, is it night & day better mate?
Hi
Can anyone tell me if they have kept all the software that was on 1.43, for example, ms office.
If someone can tell us what they have removed or added, that would be great.

I installed 1.48 last night and I think its night and day better than then old 1.43 rom.
Screen is less sensitive (which is good) because it makes the keyboard easier to use, less multiple key hits etc.. so you can actually type more accurately. I still get the odd moment where they keyboard appears to spaz out, but I think this is still down to accidentally breathing on the screen or looking at it in a funny way.. man that screen is so sensitive sometimes..
I also found that rotating and typing with both thumbs in landscape mode made for a very compelling typing experience because the keys are slightly larger and further apart which makes hitting multiple keys at the same time even harder to do.
Once you have used the device for a day or so (to build up its dictionary of words that you use alot) its becomes really very quick to rattle off very long texts.
Its still not quite perfect, but its a huge improvement over the previous rom.

Problems with my hd2 - Help Please

So basically, my hd2 is not running smooth at all. Every time i do a rom update and then restore my contacts/messages/settings it keeps getting frozen and unresponsive. So I have to restart the device, but I don't know why it should be restarted anyway, isn't is kind of super fast?!?! So, now, when I recently updated my ROM, the device is so damn slow, that even after typing my PIN it takes a minute to launch htc sense and everything. When I'm moving through the tabs it's so damn laggy i can't stand it. . Is anyone else experiencing this????
To be honest, and I'm no expert, it sounds like you have some serious phone problems, probably out of your control. Not to sound like a pessimist but given how everyone else seems to be ok with the HD2, could be either a major rom/radio problem or hardware failure??
I've updated my hd2 using the official rom from HTC and, apart from the occasional lag i get from WinMo, my device runs sweet as a a proverbial nut. Especially as I have run the tweaks suggested by the forums here.
Given that you have said that you've upgraded the ROM and it's made no difference, the only thing i could suggest is possibly send it back under warranty?
Obviously, I'd wait and see if someone with more know-how has a better explanation, i'm merely giving you my POV.
Hope you get this sorted ASAP. A properly working HD2 is a marvellous thing.
All the best
To the OP,
There could be so many causes for your problems. I would start as follows:
- Take your SD card out and see if the phone boots and is not laggy with the card out
- If this does not work take a look at the SMS threads on here and see if the solutions there help you
- If no joy then read the Hints @ Tips thread on here, if you have not already done so, and pickup on the cache move tips, using the task manager to close open files, etc
- I that fails look for the thread "HD2 Died - or did it" and implement the solutions in there
- If that does not help and you have been flashing a fair few roms then hop over to the MTTY thread in rom development and see if that helps.
Plenty to be getting on with.
Hope you get it sorted.

My power up to sense loaded time = 55 secs.
Any different?
thanks for this quick reply. I am using Energy Leo ROM, but I don't think this could be the problem, or is it? Because I have performed a hard-reset now and it's running quite smooth again.. But the question is for how long.
Two questions I have now:
-does it happen to anyone, when you try to wake up the phone, screen doesn't wake up, only the keys in the bottom start to glow? It happened to me from time to time
-does anyone else experience missed key taps? When I tap something from time to time it just doesn't get recognized so I have to "retap" it...

I have experienced question 1 and 2.. however not alot or not frequent.. I tend to think that this is just a computer and computers do crash depending on whats going on.. The missed screen taps only happens once or twice when its playing up. I do have a screen protector on though so whether the dust, oil or screen protector is causing that is a different story, but isnt a big problem for me to remove the screen protector to find out.
so, the latest problem.. my hd2 had been running for ~16 hours without any problem now, but in last 10 minutes i had to restart it twice, because the screen stopped responding after i wanted to type new sms in a conversation (first time) and after i had a pop-up message about new sms (second time). As said before, I'm using energy rom, latest issue (17.2.). Could the problem be, in fact connected with this rom or specifically with sms software?
using cooked roms you can generally expect a few lockups and restarts.
Also, the screen not powering up, just the hard keys backlight is an issue across the board, from custom roms to official roms. Some roms seem to do it, some don't, but one that doesn't do it to me might well do it to you.

It has been mentioned before that if you have a large number of texts stored, it will take a while for it to allow you to reply to a text. (It has to go through the database, check for the texts sent by the user, then arrange them alongside the ones sent to them by you, then put them in chronological order, then display them, this takes time)
but i would presume the device should be working anyway (but slower, of course) and not flashing the display and being "frozen" ?
The frozen issue with texts is all in the SMS thread I pointed you to earlier. Solutions to the phone freezing are in the HD2 Died thread, again as I pointed out earlier.
How many of these potential solutions have you tried? Tryy these things first then come back if they don't work rather than make assumptions about your ROM.
WB
after 3 months i still have the issue with missed strokes.. even after the latest energy rom update :\
anyone?

My phone keeps randomly shutting off. Ideas?

Earlier, my G2 shut off on me about 5 times. -_-
First, I had it sitting in the car ,tried to take a pic but the stupid voice recognition menu kept coming up so I gave up and set it down in the console. When I got home, the phone felt warm and was.. off.
Then, I turned it on.. stuffed it in my pocket. A moment later, I pulled it out and YET AGAIN when I pushed the button I was greeted by a quick vibe and the HTC screen -_-
Then a few minutes later I ran a speed test (checking HSPA+ out in Vegas).. put it down on the table.. come back.. PHONE IS *(@#% DEAD AGAIN.
I HATE YOU! *glares at phone*
It's killing me because it either happens several times in a row, or doesn't happen for days! I've tried replacing the sim card, replacing the SD card.. moving the battery... no dice.
Maybe it's my SIM card? Would that cause it? My last phone did that -_- And I'm silly to have not yet changed the SIM lol
Good thing I have a spare sitting in my bag.
What battery are you using? Aftermarket? Is so, did you remove the sticker around the battery? If you did then make sure you place a piece of tape on the battery to avoid making contact with the metal sd card holder. The metal on metal causes it to shut down.

Interesting. I've also been having random shutdowns (not reboots, which I've seen mentioned elsewhere, due to a hardware fault) --
HTC Desire Z, using default battery, but I'll try isolating it anyway with a slip of paper or something.
OP you on a custom rom with overclock? maybe your clocking your phone too high or low?
Also if the phone for whatever reason gets too hot or cold it will turn itself off.
Please see this forum: Phone powers down and won't turn back on w/o pulling the battery
I strongly believe that this may be an issue with the GPS and/or Google Maps. Once I have the GPS off, this has not occurred. Can anyone else try this?
I have the Bell Desire Z NAM with stock HTC Sense 2.2 ROM.
It seems to be quite prevalent, see the bottom of this review: T-Mobile G2 is speedy sequel to original Android
I think you may be onto something with that GPS note, but my phone doesnt' need the battery pulled to restart.
Also, it's running the stock firmware, stock battery (just exchanged battery and got a new SIM card yesterday, and it shut off again today.. so those aren't the problem)... so any issues I'm having are 100% stock related...
This time it shut off after using Maps so....
i read somewhere (trying to find the source) that some G2's were experiencing random restarts / shutdowns due to low signal strength. Not sure how valid this is but you might want to look into this as well.

This was true before we received the first OTA update. Since then though the problem has been fixed.
I think it was definitely the GPS, that said I just got done with a really long phone call about this and have a replacement on the way.. but that was way too much effort AND I have to pay shipping (it's not much, but seriously.) I'm not happy that T-Mobile was THAT big a pain in the butt about getting the phone replaced with a new one in the 30 day return period.
Going by the pointers one of my close friends on sprint (that used to be on AT&T) gave me, I'd say this could've been worse with another provider.. but it shouldn't have been. The reception isn't the best so the customer service should make up for that, and it sorta does.. but it sorta doesn't.
Oh well.
I have been experiencing almost the same thing for the past week or so. I have tried a few things such as lowering clock speeds, changing roms, and not using maps or GPS. Nothing has stopped the shutdowns. I cant seem to find a pattern in the things the phone is doing when it shuts off because it rarely does it when i have the screen on, also it never does it if music is playing or if i am watching a video. I will say that it seems to happen alot when i am in spots i know are dead spots for phone signal. I flash roms a fair amount so it is hard to say this has started after flashing a rom, but I will say it never did this before I flashed my first sensui 3.0 rom.
I am thinking its one of two things, something with the radio and/or its firmware or something with the sdcard because at least one senseui 3.0 rom said something about sdcard formatting.
I hope all this helps the smart people come up with idea on what wrong with our phones.

My Desire Z had the same problem and I returned it to HTC Service for repair. They said they change some cables? and a new battery. It has been nearly 3 days and I haven't experienced a single shutdown but there was one time it restarted by itself.
Yeah my only problem with that is, I am close to my upgrade date. How much did it cost. I may still do it so I can give this phone to my kid brother.

There is a conductive metal strip along the back of the battery that looks like it may be shorting out. Check out the link for detailed fix with pics. I take no credit for this, just posting it since I'm experiencing this problem too.
Talked to tmobile CS today and was trying to get a replacement because my phone would randomly reboot and shut off. All he told me was go and pick up a new sim card. If that didn't help then they would be willing to give me a warranty replacement.

Is this possible fix something else than lining the back of the battery with a strip of paper?

I'm pretty sure mine is not caused by the metal strip since my battery's all proofed. I didn't have anything wrong with it until about half a month ago, and it always happened after using GPS and left it on. If I turn it off after navigation or any other app that requires GPS the phone won't go into SOD.
I switched back to CM7 RC2 around that time and starting to get the GPS no fix problem, and it could't be fixed by the dd=/dev/.... script. So I switched into Nightly 88 or something that at least I was able to get a fix but the not-so-random freezing started.
This morning I flashed the new 7.1.0 RC1 and the phone would just turn itself off (it used to just freeze and become hot), and I got really tired of it... My old G1 was much more reliable than this.
I tried the dd=/dev script again, so far after 5 min the phone is still on with GPS on....
@carcuote
Thank you! I haven't had this issue for months now. But the solution is so easy to do that I will try our anyways.
I had this issue the first month our so when I got the new phone, but went away permanently after the second month. Maybe the contacts in the battery got a little rusted? Don't know but the solution is simple enough to try...

Gingerbread issues

Anyone experiencing any? Sometimes if i dont restart my phone for 2days my phone gets weird.
1. when someone calls screen stays black till i slide it when i think the sliders at.
2. same with messaging black screen till i just randomly press on the screen and it opens.
Also same when i do my slidepattern lock i have to guess where the dots are.
Then phone gets sluggish to go back home screen
Anyone else experiencing this?
I am not rooted. Also i installed the update manually.
very weird, does this mean you have the call wonk bug on stock GB rom? maybe some others can reply and confirm. but cm7 users have a similar call bug that isnt known to be present on the stock ROM.
by call wonk bug do you mean where someone calls and the screen is just black, and if you slightly move the slider to answer the phone the screen comes off of black?
yes, very random things happen after a few days on stock gb - i have to reboot and/or kill the launcher every so often. find gb battery life sucks too.
Damnit i might have to reset and stick to 2.2 till this fixes its annoying. You say this is also present in cayenmod(sp?) 7.0?

well not exactly, but similar. the "call wonk" bug has been plaguing AOSP versions of gingerbread for months now, and nobody can fix it. until this thread, the "wonk" problem is only present on AOSP version, NOT the OTA version of gingerbread from google. some people dont experience it, like me, and some do. it varies as to what exactly happens with the wonk, so i cant give a good description. but i'm not sure your problem is necessarily the same issue. seems similar, but possibly something different.
I've been having the same issues lately. It's very similar to the Gingerbread keyboard bug where the popups stop showing when you press the keys or hold a key to get the menu of other characters. It's actually still there, and you can try to guess where the character you want is and hope to get it... but it doesn't display. This can be fixed by killing the Android Keyboard process.
I'm seeing similar things in other places on my phone. Today, after not having rebooting for quite a while, the unlock slider wouldn't slide. Swiping my finger across where it should slide still unlocked the phone, but nothing animated to show this.
I went to change my News & Weather widget refresh interval the other day and the screen went dim (like it does in behind a select list popup), but nothing showed... however, the popup was there... and by guessing the location on the screen I was able to hit the refresh interval I wanted (after several attempts).
I've noticed the same in a few other locations that I can't remember right off. Basically, something is supposed to show on the screen, but doesn't... yet the phone still reacts properly as if it were there. Just like the keyboard bug.
It could be some kind of screen refresh bug... in my case (completely stock... updated manually to 2.3) it's definitely not any kind of call wonk as experienced in AOSP builds (unless this is the root cause of those wonks, but I somehow doubt that).
Thankfully, I haven't had any battery life issues with Gingerbread. Maybe even a little better battery life (or maybe just placebo effect).
^^^ ditto that entire post.
At first noticed it with the incoming call screen, and then the keyboard.
Easy to fix, but is a huge annoyance. Often can't see who is calling and end up answering blindly which is BS.
I'm now starting to see it in apps all over the place. Tower Raiders 2, Market, Messenger, and probably more I'm forgetting. Having to reset every couple days is becoming almost a necessary inconvenience.
Battery has been perfect, contrary to many. I did see a noticeable drop in Quadrant score switching to GB, but overall feel of performance has probably been better. Swype for some reason stopped working, similar to what happens after you update, but nothing has updated since? Regardless I'm sure an reinstall will fix.
Nothing but stock for me btw.

I'm afraid the call "wonk" bug is also on the stock Google ROM for "some" Nexus One users. See here:-
http:***//code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15297
(remove "***" as I cannot post links yet)
Personally I've never experienced it. There are lots of theories about this "wonk" and its cause.
Cyanogen has been battling to find an answer, even though he cannot replicate it himself.
One theory is that it comes about by not fully wiping the handset and SDcard before installing 2.3 for the first time and then not re-installing anything from a previous backup but rather doing a piecemeal restore on both phone and SDcard as if the handset were new.
I have to admit that, being an ex Nokia symbian user, this was the approach I adopted as not doing so on the symbian platform caused no end of problems.

Probably the reason that thread hasn't been acknowledged is its a cluster of people with this 'issue', but claiming to be on OTA 2.3.3 and AOSP-based CM7..
My understanding of what is defined as the 'wonk' (which I experienced when my N1 was on CM7) is
15-20 seconds where the caller can't hear me, usually resulting in a hang up after about 10 seconds
call comes in but no slider to answer
That thread is describing a 2 second delay after the call connects, which I have NOT experienced on OTA GRI40 but would be manageable if I did. The 'wonk' as described above makes a cell phone unusable and I personally haven't seen a report of the 'wonk' on OTA GRI40. More importantly for myself, I have not experienced it in over a month of use..
Yea well the g2x is coming out next week or so and i mean it is on 2.2 which i guess i am fine with and if or when gingerbread comes to that hopefully all the wonks turn into woos!
I've had the keyboard issues randomly, and this week I had the issue where the screen is black when a call comes in. As someone before me mentioned, this is not the CM7 "wonk" and an issue with 2.3.3.

the 2 second delay is not the "call wonk" people are experiencing on AOSP versions. the wonk is where the whole phone screen goes black for 30 seconds, and anything that uses the mic crashes or doesnt work. this 2 second delay when answering is an issue, but a different one, and commong to all 2.3.
If you're having the call delay problem, especially on a device that is not the Nexus One, please star the issue here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16230
This is a known bug with Gingerbread, that Google recently declined, saying it was "device specific" (to the Nexus One).
However this problem is also being reportedly widely on the HTC Desire, as well as Samsung Galaxy devices. I have posted a new issue above and not attributed it to a specific device.
Please comment and star this issue. And please specificy especially if your device is not the Nexus One, so that Google gets this message that this is a widespread Gingerbread bug, which has nothing to do with the device.
Thanks.
The Google employee following up on the call delay issue, in the Google support forums, is asking people to fill out the following form, to gather information about how people are affected and on what devices.

I updated to GB right away, and I am just now annoyed enough to come post in the N1 threads.
Issue 1:When a call comes through the screen goes black. I will press the power button and the screen pops back up, displaying the caller info.
Issue 2: Sometimes (not all the time) when I close an app, any app, the home screen is blank with just the wallpaper picture showing. Again I press the power button to "sleep" the phone, press the power button again, slide to open and all of my short cuts and widgets are back to normal.
Issue 3: I also have the delay when answering. I have learned to play this off by bringing the phone up to my ear a little slower.
Issue 4: The trackball is extremely slow (unusable pretty much) in certain apps like Dolphin Browser HD, Yahoo! Mail, among others. This is mainly when I want to select text and use the Froyo trackball, click, drag, click method as opposed to the GB dragging of the little orange boxes...which I find the GB method more difficult anyway.
I will edit my post as more things come to mind.
My N1 is not rooted, btw.

SlimBean 4.3 Screen Wake on Standby

***TL;DR***I know now that 4.3 has this bug and it is something we will deal with. I understand the causes, but the problem is buried in the kernel vs the ROM, you can still read my semi adventure but I wanted to make this edit to save you time if you think I found an answer. Overall WIFI is a huge trigger for screen wakes along with shotty or chattery reception.***
First off SlimBean is pretty much the best ROM I've dealt with, so many options, faster then I've ever experienced, and sharp looking. I've been sharking around these forums for 2 years afraid to ever make a name and post due to my lack of knowledge. I love the search options for finding answers that this forum offers to visitors and I've surely used it to root an old AT&T Atrix 4G and now my current DD the Glacier. Now I feel as though I have a little bit of sense of what the heck I am doing and would like to share my path to figuring out how to make SlimBean 4.3 work for me. Who knows maybe this may help some people that have similar problems.
The problem::: On a SEMI clean install of [UNOFFICIAL]SlimBean 4.3 \\ Nightly \\ 22.08.2013 I noticed the Glacier in standby would suddenly illuminated with light although the screen was black. It was enough to light to catch my eyes as I was starting to fall asleep. I ignored it until morning then paid attention to it happening all day at work on and off constantly with the WIFI off and just mobile network, then mobile network off, reboot, nothing seemed to help and I couldn't bare the thought of the phone's screen just on all the time.
After reading threads about HTC's possibly having bad screen made from Taiwan I was in disbelief that it was the Hardware as coming from a year old version of MIUI, I never had a problem with the screen. Leading to the idea it must be a software issue / user issue in which I must of rushed the install of the ROM or it's a quirk in 4.3.
Prior to reinstalling the same ROM, I went with trying other similar ROM's finding [UNOFFICIAL] Carbon 4.3 \\ Nightly \\ 26.08.2013 literally was just released, also a super customizable fast ROM. Everything went smooth until I played music through headphones and the illuminated black screen was back. Now I'm definitely convinced it's the software so I move on to the source code of these ROM's ev_glacier-nightly-2013.08.27.
Ev_glacier-nightly-2013.08.27 Had no screen wakes after 2 hours idle on mobile network only. I wasn't in a location with WIFI as I believe a network with a lot of information chatter may be causing these standby black illumination wakes. Back to SLIM.
SUPER clean install. 1) Format SD card completely 2) fresh download w/ checked md5 of Slimbean 3) Full Wipe "wipe data factory reset" "wipe cache" 4) format/system & format/cache manually just in case 5) Clear Dalvik 6) And fix permissions since although I believe it has no point but it's just so easy to click just in case. Probably doing things double.
Here I am now.. Slimbean is back and nothing but the .zip has been installed along with updating Nova Launcher. I am waiting to reinstall GAPPS so I can first isolate this problem within the ROM itself. What I am noticing is on just mobile network 2g/3g/2g+3g I do not get the phantom wakes, but with WIFI on it so far is only happening about 20-30 seconds after the phone drops into Standby and at least now it's not long lasting, just a few screen black flashes and it's gone. The entire 20 minutes or so I've been typing this, keeping an eye on the screen it's been quiet. Progress is being made.
Now I have thoroughly read up on and used Better Battery Stats, Wakelock detector, and Greenify to help isolate problems prior to the clean install and am waiting to install any Google apps (play store) up until tomorrow so I can pay more attention to my phone and make sure it's just a WIFI wake lock causing the screen to illuminate black. Also was toying with the idea of installing 3.0.64 kernel. I'm curious as to see if it's not just the WIFI wake lock, but all wake locks that actually wake the screen. Once I'm ready to install the play store I'm going to start combing through the device using these fantastic guides and the aforementioned apps...
[GUIDE] The Total Newb's Guide to Wakelocks ::: [HOW TO] Fix Your Skyrocket's Battery Life ::: [GUIDE] Insanely Better Battery Life When Idle
My goal with this long post is to share my experience and also commended these developers on these awesome ROM's. I will post much shorter updates on how I fixed or found the exact problem. Mainly after searching I saw similar issues but not this direct "random black illuminated screen" problem. Thanks, and be sure to call me out on anything contained in this post.
the waiting game
At 9 hours from 100% charge, I'm at 40% battery with on 1.5 hours of screen time. I went through all my settings and disabled all sounds and haptic feed back. I have yet to install any apps and am running off the bare bones of just the ROM. WiFi & 4g mobile data were on all night with the screen flashing only if I used it then locked it with the power button.
Thinking I can live with these timeout 2-5 flashes, I start browsing the forum from my phone, put it down to get ready for work, look back at the phone as it is flashing black screen rampantly on it's own. Then it holds the black screen for a solid minute or two.
WiFi chatter wake lock must be doing this... Reboot to recovery - wipe dalvik - wipe cache - reboot phone. Now to test just 4g network, flash happens on first screen lock, but not as rampant. Hmmm. My next step will be to wait for full battery drain / charge then I want to try the kernal I mentioned above. 3.0.64 kernel.
Funny stuff
Realizing the Kernel I wanted to flash doesn't work with 4.3, I hope at least some of the 86 people that viewed my post got a laugh. Even the older version of SlimBean causes the random screen flashes and the screen on while charging even with the ROM settings for such off. WiFi seems to be the greatest cause. It's as if wakelocks are actually being represented as screen flashes since the kernel is so powerful.
I just don't want to use the CM ROM...
I'm going to dig around the forums further and type in different key words of my problem just to make sure I didn't miss someone already answering this question. Slim has all the functions I always wanted out of my droid and I'm dead set to make it work...or just live with screen flashes I guess.
Hope this is a comedy for someone.

I've found on the issue I have.

Non-Stop ROMS
1) SlimBean 4.2 & 4.3 Both have this black screen flicker / black screen wake / black screen on while charging.
2) Carbon 4.3 Had it black screen on while listening to music / black screen constant while charging
3) Evolve 3.3 based of 4.3 seemed to work fine, but I wasn't a fan of the larger Icons and screen, similair to CM 4.3 so I didn't leave it long enough to test...
4.3 CM 4.3 black screen wake almost constant / black screen on while charging... also didn't last long to really test everything.
I am down the river if I want this to just go away. I have installed all these ROM on a completey clean formated SD card each time
I'm sticking with SlimBean as it has the looks and reacts like I expect my phone to. After doing some more searching and after a little time has passed for more 4.3 development there may be a kernel that will work better for me.
Oh here is another dead end I've found... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185747&page=3 [KERNEL] Fixed the flickering screen problem,CM10,CM10.1,SENSE3.6 4.0 4.1 That goes no where...
wifi
WiFi is the biggest culprit for the random screen wakes. I've just been living with it since I dig the slimbean 4.3 ROM so much. Thought I might pop back on here to make some closure. I worked on removing some apk's from the already minimal gapps I installed and will soon start a separate thread on just that. As long as after searching I don't find the same info I figured out.
I think you've got the screen flicker bug.
Try flashing the .69 kernel, it claims to stop the flicker.
Also I know it's got something to do with the WiFi. I know a little about it though.

thanks for the response

I see you all over the place when it comes to Glacier threads. Today at work I was searching around for a download link. I read through a ton of other ROMS threads hoping it was buried in the comments somewhere. So far I only turned up and old thread with a dead link and a couple of other threads you mentioning to other people to download the .69 KERNEL which I am guessing the full version number is 3.0.69, if it's not then there may be my first problem in finding the link...
*edit
this is the main thread I keep finding, you have so many other kernels on there

I have a little idea about the screen flicker.
A member called zyGh0st told me. I've pmed Elgin but no response.
I'll pm coderzs too Lil.

All the Kernels in the Glacier Bible page you have been keeping up seem old. I'm nervous to try one since they obviously seem like they won't work. I'm game to try what ever and post on here my progress so if anyone else stumbles upon the issue they can guide their way through it.
I've been searching "kernel 3.0.69", "kernels 4.3 roms", "jb rom kernel", "4.3 jb kernel", sometimes including the term "glacier" or "MT4G" with little to no luck between XDA and just google itself. I always just find ROMS that just mention the kernel but have no downloads.
Reading your older posts I see that youve already tried the kernel.

I tried 3.0.64 kernel, not this mysterious .69 kernel you have mentioned. If you have a link or mirror of it I'll be glad to give it a go.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Found how you added the 2 kernels to the Bible page, I just flashed .64 again and I'm nothing but bootloops. I'll give .62 a chance since now I'll have to re-flash Slim.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
make the double bootloops with either of those 2 kernels. I waited like 5 minutes, restarted the phone to see if it would boot and it just stayed on the slim splash screen. Of course I wiped dalvik and cache before installing either.

Oh yes, I head that already downloaded on the SD but the name CM_SENSE made me think it was a ROM not a kernel. The .66 kernel link is dead, but the .58 flashed & works but there is still the flicker on 4.22 SlimBean. 4.22 is so lame compared to 4.3. Even if there wasn't a flicker on 4.22 I don't think I'd keep it. Those big ICONS are just too much. I think that's why I like Carbon also. Anywho...
My addiction to messing with my phone is always in conflict with work. As if I don't have enough problem solving to deal with outside of cell phones.
I am going to try out the recovery I see in your signature, Recovery : 4EXT 1.0.0.5 RC8, just to see if it makes a difference. If you have the same phone without the same problem I must then eliminate the different variables to find the true problem. I found a "how to" and am either going to put in the time in a couple of hours or tonight. Then I'm going to start the rounds of testing ROMS / KERNELS all over again and I'll post my findings here.
I appreciate the back and forth, I actually got a can't thank anymore message because I used up my 8 yesterday~
Living with it
I've been just living with the screen flash. The ROM is just to sweet to give up. At some point if there it a completely stable 4.3 I may upgrade.
On a regular work day I don't have any available WIFI, so I toggle it off then reboot the phone every morning. I usually get a random screen flash everytime I manually lock / turn the screen off and that's it. With WIFI on I get random flashes at random rates and for random lengths.
Playing music invokes these random black screen wakes also, I've stuck to my old blackberry as my MP3 player...I know that statement seems extemely wrong and against all sciences, but the 9780 bold works perfect as a music player. They had the long-press song skip in the volume button well before anyone added it to Android.
If ever I find the correct ROM / KERNEL combination, or someone else figures out the problem and I find it, I will post it here. This winter I am going to get more into understanding & compiling roms + digging through code so maybe I'll find it myself...ha!
