Hi, I just got my Nook Color a few days ago and am loving it! However, I got it as a refurb, so I'm paranoid about it having any issues. I noticed that sometimes when I hold it a certain way (with my thumb on the bezel while the nook is upside down) I get orange ripples in the screen (kind of like what happens when you poke a monitor). Is this normal?
Also, does the screen only do multitouch with 2 fingers max?
Thanks!

I've noticed that if the light from my LCD monitor hits the Nook screen at certain angles I see colored bands on the Nook screen.
Not sure about the orange ripples unless it's caused by polarized light like from an LCD.
As far as I know only two fingers work for multitouch.
Sorry slightly off track, but what is multitouch and how does it work? Thanks.

Controlling your device screen with more than 1 finger at a time
i.e. pinch to zoom - has multi touch x 2
Nook Color is limited to 2 touch points - The latest design that I'm aware of - on most Tegra 2 tablets - is 10 points of contact to control the screen ( there's a microprocessor that gives the screen functionality ). That's really only needed for gaming though - as far as I can guestimate.
Games like fruit ninja - or 2 player games where a 2 people might be using the tablet at once to control the screen can use more than 2 points of contact to enhance gameplay.

i think, they rushed the release and made this device pain in the ass.maybe we need a NEW ROM!!!
mine hasn't had these problems, knock wood. And I am loving the speed!
With the screen being so sensitive... why does that make it impossible to write text messages? it just means you dont have to bend your screen when pressing so hard to press a key...?
Having had a Touch HD - owning a TP2 (work) and just having sold an Iphone 3GS - I honestly love mine to bits.
Been playing with the phone all evening - and I have to say I am really impressed - Vibrant screen, awesome speed, gorgeous flash (vid's and pics are quite good too compared to my other/previous phones) - All in all I am well impressed. The OS sits together so well - not having to touch WinMo at all, that this is one ROM I might just stick with!!!
I like the hard buttons on the front of the device - one of the bad sides of the blackstone but I have to agree the screen is VERY sensitive. As I'll be getting an invisishield for it as soon as they are released - this will make it much more useable - struggling at the moment but I can honestly say its a good thing - VERY precise screen - compared to the iphone 3GS (which sometimes required a double press to register) - You just have to think about touching this phone and it reacts - lol
Overall - VERY PLEASED and super happy I ditched my iphone 3GS for this oh and its VERY slim - in fact one of the slimmest HTC devices I have ever laid my hands on. All in all about 2mm bigger in depth, width and height than a 3GS but with like 50% more display area - Now THIS is what I call an iphone killer.

heh, if your passing by hudds soon i.e. on teh weekend let me know fella and i'll hook up.
I agree on the sensitivity....it's awful....if, for example, you type something incorrectly...VERY easy to do..then press delete quickly a few times, it doesn't delete..it starts typing random characters!!
hoping there's a setting for this somewhere. A screen protector might be the answer though in the short term
I also had to hard reset (because I wanted to..not for any other reason) and I followed the procedure in the manual, has been the same for all HTC devices I've had
Not to *****, but the guys saying that the screen is too responsive... Are you used to capacitive screens? You need to get used to it for a bit, especially when you come from resistive screens.
Also, a phone that is TOO responsive? You never hear that from a WM phone .
compared to the iphone (yes, I know..I'm sorry) the screen is lousy!!

I don't have an HD2, but I think I've experienced this over-sensitivity on my iPod nano, which I presume has a capacitive scroll wheel.
Sometimes (although not usually) it becomes so sensitive that I don't have to actually touch the scroll wheel for the songs to scroll. It then becomes almost impossible to choose the song I actually want because when I move my finger to the select button the song changes before I can select it - very, very annoying and frustrating. I'm not sure why it's sometimes much worse than at other times. Maybe it's the temperature of my finger or something.
Anyway, it sounds like this is the same sort of thing that's happening on the HD2. It's a real pain on my iPod, and I would find it totally unacceptable on a device like the HD2.
Its just a case of getting used to the screen. Our fingers are too used to resistive screens that we don't actually lift our fingers enough and drag across the screen since unless we apply enough pressure on resistive screen it won't do anything. With capacitive we just need to re-train our fingers to lift off the screen another 1mm and it'll be fine.
Here's my suggestions:
1) Try typing slower to start with.
2) Or turn phone to landscape as the keys on the onscreen keyboard are slightly wider.
I can type quite quickly in landscape with between 1-3 errors per an SMS.
I'm loving this phone right now!

I also was very frustrated and irritated the first two days. But then I realized how responsive the screen is. Just a very very light touch already gives a reaction. And now I'm loving it more and more by the minute...

Just try another keyboard. One that doesn't allow to change a character once you pressed a character on the keyboard. Fingertouch Pro and Resco Keyboard Pro for example are great keyboards for the sensitive screen of the HD2. I myself like the Resco keyboard. It responds and looks very similar to the iphone keyboard.
BTW Fingertouch pro and Resco Keyboard Pro both allows you to make use of gestures. Together with this feature text input is a breeze on the HD2
(Better yet is MessagEase, but unfortunately, under WinMob 6.5, it has some real problems).

Hey I am in wakefield too! Small world
I have to agree the screen is very sensitive. I am sure with a weeks usage I will be ok.
I have to say though I am so in love with the phone. The speed is perfect. No more waiting to load SMS\email screen etc like with my touch HD.
Hehe thats what happens with everyone who switch over from Resistive to Capacitive, at first they will hate it as they're too used to resistive.
But just within 2-3 days they realize just how much better Capative is. Resistive just sucks IMO. Typing is way quicker using a Capactive panel.

I had exactly the same experience switching to my G1 - I sent the first one back after a few hours as i was convinced the screen wasn't working. The next handset was was the same. A day or so of use later and I was sold and never looked back.
no..the screen is definitely too sensitive...this is not my first capacitive screen btw.
I've got my phone on charge on the desk next to me...and number of time it has open the calendar, or contacts...all by itself is amazing. A few moments ago (which has prompted me to write this post), it opened the calendar and the curser moved all over november....18, 19, 20, 24, etc etc...without me being anywhere near it!!
there has to be a way to turn the sensitivity down
Just got my unit today and love it.
Only notice a soft sparkle (like when you splash water on any LCD screen) but it's very soft and only noticeable at certain angle.
quick call to friend who has HD2, same problem.
anyone else have that problem ?
it is not a problem, it's how this capacitive display is built. at certain angle You will also notice a grid of lines and tiny dots.

It sounds to me like you've noticed the grid in the screen. This is part of the capacitive screen design, and not a fault or issue. It's there on everyone's phone, but as you've obviously seen, it's so unnoticable normally that you just forget about it.
Is it that, or something else?
Edit:
Or you could you read the post above
just curious, how come I didn't notice it on iphone ? lower screen resolution + smaller screen ?

I couldn't say why you didn't notice it, but it is there.
Is anyone else having problems with their touch screen?
It will occasionally become unresponsive, and other times will just start 'clicking' repeatedly in random spots.
I find myself having to turn the power off and on (via the button, not a hard power cycle) to fix the issue. Its starting to get annoying.
Anyone else?
Yes, I am getting the same thing but I've found that if I just turn the screen off and then back on it fixes the problem. I don't need to reboot.
You think this would warrant an exchange? or is it just how its going to be?
I've put several hours on mine, but haven't experienced this issue. I don't know, if this happened to me more than once, I probably would exchange it.
It was happening to me all the time. I had to get a screen protector and haven't happened since.

Very good "solution" to what should be an obvious problem. The Nook Color has a *capacitive* touch-screen. If you get "junk/gunk" on the screen, it's gonna cause you issues. I find this to be the case while holding my NC and playing Flight Director for a while. The issue: My hands become sweaty and as a result of the slight film of sweat/oil on the screen, the NC's ability to measure the capacitive changes on the screen (and react appropriately to them) is compromised.
Keep your screen clean and you won't have this issue.
Note: after you wipe the screen down (damp cloth, etc), you will need to click the power button and go the lock screen and then back into the NC before it works right directly after cleaning the screen. The dampness of the cleaning cloth throws up the calibration enough to cause very strange things. My experience with "correcting" this issue tells me that in some way, the NC is recalibrating itself when you go to the lock screen.
johnopsec, this has been my experience as well. After cleaning the screen from finger-jam i don't get the phantom clicks. I also noticed that because I live in a very humid climate (Florida panhandle) there will be a thin moisture layer buildup sometimes and it really helps to wipe this off. I also have an incredible that does not have this problem but it has a screen protector which, I am guessing (and as gigadigit expressed), fixes the problem. Just make sure the screen is clean and dry before applying!
screen response
Also,
If you are holding the side of the case by the screen this throws off the touchscreen, I was having the issue where it would be clicking and multiple letter inputs when typing.
Also when it is laying flat and you have the power cord plugged in you may get multi letter inputs.
The trick, hold it by the back not the sides.
and if you have it plugged in and need to type don't leave it laying flat.
I have experienced this problem and loosely seen it correlated with moist fingers.
no moist fingers here and on my 2nd nc. this ones starting to have the ghost touches too.
My Nook Color started acting up after paying levels 3-4 to 3-6 of Angry Birds. I'm not sure if Angry Birds caused the issue or not as I haven't gotten it to do it in another app. I'm running 1.4.2. Doing a lock and unlock fixes the problem until it returns.
I managed to get Phone Tester to run after it got into this state. I made a video of it using a crappy webcam. There's a stuck finger in the corner.

Touch Screen issues while unit is plugged in..
It seems I have read on some forums that some people have screen issues.
Personally I didn't experience this until I tried to use my NC while plugged into it's wall charger.. It seems to act as if it has a grounding issue, which is not the case when the unit is unplugged.
So when you are running your multitouch or touch tests, do it without the unit plugged in..

I have had the same problem with my touch screen. I have the nexus live wallpaper and whenever you touch the screen it sends off the animation. Well sometimes it just goes non stop and sometimes opens up the window where you can apply a widget. I guess the most practical solution would be a screen protector but if not ill restore it and send it off to B&N
There's a small little app in the market named "Nook Screen Recalibrate" this app is super simple and easy to use. I hope this helps
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.assid.android.nookrecalibrate&feature=search_result
Here is the issue I have...
Right is the N button side. Just a reference point for this.
Reboot the Nook (I use CM7).
Bring up the keyboard
Touch Q in the center - you get W.
Touch Q on the right - you get W
Touch Q on the left - might get Q but you usually get W.
Recalibrate using the Nook Screen Calibration (above).
Q now gives Q unless you press on the right side of the key. I also notice I still have to hit the back arrow more to the left or I bring up the keyboard.
I've learned to live with it, but the left side of the touchscreen is slightly off and you have to touch to the left side of any object on the last 1".

yeah, for me it's the edge of the screen along the right side. it's less sensitive then the rest of the screen. I found that calibrating 2-3 times really works best.
There's also a fix in the nookwiki, but i can't get my adb to work on my laptop, I think its the drivers.
http://nookdevs.com/Recalibrate_the_NookColor_touch_screen
What is the left and right side?
I should have said that left is the side opposite the N button.
I downloaded Multi-Touch Screen from the market and I can see part of the problem is the angle of my finger. Straight on it's better.
Nook Color Touch Screen Problem
Having similar problem as described, after two years. Extended warranty expired ... two weeks ago (of course).
Tried cleaning screen, no help. Have not tried screen saver yet, but will.
In the meantime, I notice the comments about touching the sides, and I noted that as well.
Is it possible that this could be helped by opening it up and re-seating the case? Has anybody tried this?
Anyone feel the same with their GT10.1? I feel like sometimes I really need to press on an icon to make it launch or swipe really hard to get it to move.
Is there a way to increase the sensitivity? Anyone else notice this too?
It's not a huge problem just a minor annoyance. It just doesn't seem snappy.
I've noticed that about mine too. Nothing major but an annoyance nonetheless.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium App
When I tried the Asus Transformer that's what I found, needed more pressure than I expected for it to register. My 10.1 seems fine, responds to very light touches nicely.
Is there a calibration setting somewhere?
I find myself hitting everything twice. First time it doesn't register, next time I push harder. My XOOM screen is more sensitive. Guess I'm too used to that. This effects swiping in the browser too. Its hard to push gently to move a page up and down. I have to push harder and then every once in a while the page ends up scrolling at high speed all the way to the top or bottom.
It seems to me that I just need to get used to using the larger capacitive touch screen. When first using a smaller touch screen everyone begins to realize what part of their finger is actually touching the screen. I don't know if the screen is any more or less sensitive but I've been getting better at using this larger screen and noticing which part of my finger actually making contact and where.
Ill tell you 1 thing for sure, this thumb keyboard is amazing! I think I might actually like it better than swype! You can really type quick and the auto correct works very Well!
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Here is some evidence that the sensitivity problems with the screen may be hardware/software related.
After a hard reset the screen appears to be very sensitive.
After an hour screen sensitivity seems to drop.
BUT there is something else going on - at the same time, after a hard reset my Targus capacitive stylus works normally on the Tabs screen.
At the time when the screen sensitivity seems to drop, the Targus stylus stops working. It can no longer be used to swipe the screen or scroll the browser. Finger swipe and scroll still works however.
Now why would the Targus stylus suddenly stop working, unless there is a real change in the capacitive sensitivity of the TAB 10.1 screen such that it falls below the threshold necessary to operate/detect the stylus?
The touchscreen on the Tab 10.1 definitely isn't as accurate or sensitive as the Xoom. I had both side by side for a few days before I returned my Xoom and you can definitely tell the difference.
However, I'll take the Galaxy's screen over the Xoom just from a contrast/color reproduction standpoint, so I guess there are pluses and minuses to everything.

Apparently Tegra 2 is not able to cope with all of the open tasks, live widgets, and have enough power left to make the immediate switch to a larger screem's touch commands.

I have a XOOM as well, and it handles multitasking just fine. There is no hesitation or lack of screen sensitivity at all. I pulled it out this morning and was amazed at how much smoother the user experience is. You tap once - the screen responds - on my GTAB 10.1 I have to conciously think about every click and half the time I still have to do it twice.
I hope i"m describing this right, but basically I wanted to see if this is normal (i've never owned a tablet before) that when I try and hold the Nexus 7 when reading e-books (holding it like I would my kindle) my thumb is outside of the screen resting on the black border, but the screen picks up my touch and thinks i'm interacting?
Is there normally a little bleed over for the digitizer outside of the screen? Or should I consider this an issue?
This isn't a product killer, but super annoying when trying to use it to read ebooks.
Thanks!!!

If you have soft thumbs, it could be your skin bending/flowing causing it to touch the screen when it doesn't appear to be. This happens to me a lot
