So Ive had my nexus since launch. The phone I have been waiting for, a google aosp device.
Now Im a pro nexus person but recently the phone has been just getting on my nerves. Im trying to debate if I should call it quits and see if I can get sprint to swap it for another device. My issues with the other devices, is sure the 3D looks nice but in reality its just a gimicky evo. And I wouldnt want any other phone other than the sgs II (maybe) or the new nexus (when it comes out) but I have already sold my evo so i need something.
Here are my issues.
1. The reception issues with my particular handset are awful. In 1X when I have 3g on my Blackberry, wifi sucks ass.
2. No sd card. I dont really know what to say here. I knew this going into this phone so I cant fault the phone there.
3. No back light (I can deal with this thanks to bln)
4. The volume level (loudness) is just wack. Voodoo helps but really its wack.
5. The battery life isnt all that great, some of this could be due to the radio issues.
I guess my only real issue here is the Reception issues. Some times I can barely even send a text.
I dont know. I like my phone kinda.
If your reception is bad primarily at home you can get an airwave free, I did and it works

My airave did little to help my at home service. I personally had enough with the service issues I had with my nexus. I am running an evo til one of 2 things happen. Either Nexus gets an ota update to address service issues, or the photon drops, whichever comes first. Nexus s is a far superior device to the evo 4g, I am very aware of that. But I have 100x's better service everywhere I go. I miss my nexus already and it hasn't been a day, but I love having awesome service, so its a trade off.

The loudness of the phone is a bit anouying, when side by side with my girks stock epic is loud

The update that sounds like is coming will hopefully address most of these issues according to android central.

my issue with that is it says it addresses 4g and wifi, both of which i never had a problem with. im gonna hold out and if it really fixes the radio ill have get a new nexus.
It says improved signal acquisition. That is what you are looking for.

Trade the NewCastle for the Sam Adams? Both will get you drunk or quench your thirst.
Sit tight and see what the update does.

Hey guys, I've been wondering about something recently. Does anyone know sprint's policy on phone exchanges? Basically, I have an epic and this is my 3rd replcement phone which is STILL going crazy. I was wondering since this is my 3rd phone should I try waiting till the nexus s 4g comes out to replace with that since its a "similar phone"? Or should I just exchange now for whatever? Thanks
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
slim and no chance of exchanging it for a nexus imho. they will just change it out for another epic
Its like a crazy number of replacements before they will give you a new one, let alone upgrade. Doesn't hurt to tty though. I have better luck when calling
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
What I would do is go ahead and take it in and get a replacement. Hopefully the next one won't go all crazy on you. Then, if you really want the Nexus S, when it comes out, sell your Epic and use that money to put towards the Nexus.
There is no comparable replacement to the Epic (yet), so you'll keep getting Epics if they are exchanged. Nexus S will not be comparable.

Doesn't matter... Sprints not going to just give you one of there next top phones to replace an older supposed top of the line that did live up to its potential. Not with out a fight at least.
As one of the other relies stated it takes a lot of trade ins before they would offer you a different phone.
It took me 8 Treo 800w's(3 in one visit) and about a weeks worth of calling customer services and retentions before they finally gave me a Treo Pro as a replacement.
They even wanted me to use my early upgrade about a month early. I did get to stick of to them a month later... used my upgrade to get the Pre(lol) and sold the Pro for 300$.

I've had pretty good success through email, but you have to be reasonable. You might be able to swap it for an EVO. Just be nice they tend to be more willing to help if your nice.

You would have to be crazy to trade a nexus s for an Evo.
Well I'm hoping to meet a crazy person.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
As much as I love my NS4G, I would be willing to trade it for a EVO in a few months, based on these things:
If there isnt any sort of update to address reception issues.
If the Photon's bootloader is locked
How many issues the 3D ends up having.
I obviously dont want to take a step back going to the EVO, but I really dont want to be stuck with a POS either. I have a sprint tower a few blocks from my house and have to have my airave plugged in for my phone to work in my house. Thats unacceptable. I was a little more ok with it a few weeks ago when I figured an update would be right around the corner. Every day that goes by makes me doubt that it is anything an update can fix. I really want the Photon, I love Moto devices. I had the Droid 2 and the Droid X and both were very solid phones with great radios and battery life. I expect more of the same from the Photon. But if its locked I dont think it will work for me. The 3D will be a buggy device for quite a while and I dont really want to deal with that, I just sold my Thunderbolt because of the issues it had.
I guess my point is to be patient, someone will want to make that trade eventually, maybe with some cash included also
A tree took my cable wire out yesterday. I had no internet, so no airave. Well, my NS4G was completely useless til they came and fixed the internet. I had to sit outside to use the phone. Wouldn't even send a text.
You sure you want this phone?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I too have noticed slightly lower signal reception... however at work I would be stuck on 1x or no service on my EVO... with the NS4G I always have service, even if it's roaming.
Yea, don't get me wrong, I live in a basement apartment so every phone sucks down here. But I didn't have the airave til about a week before I got my NS4G and my Evo and epic both worked, the Evo better than the epic. NS4G won't work at all down here. I left for work this morning and got flooded with emails and text messages that weren't coming through because I had no service.

Sprint agreed to replace my EVO with the screen brightness problem and offered me a NEXUS because the EVO is currently back ordered, I declined, good idea?
Its watever your heart desire....but I would choose evo then nexus
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
That's an awesome trade if you don't mind the smaller screen.
That's the ONLY thing holding me back from a Nexus.
Also, given that the Evo doesn't have root, Nexus S looks more appetizing.

You mean 16bg not 8 but still no SD card slot but I only own a 8 gb card so its a win for me not to mention on CM7 with my MT4g I was getting 35 hours+ on one charge and not the Nexus have a auto kill built in and I don't mean the froyo crap but a real killer and the volume with my skullcandy sounds like subs...I have to have this phone.
Considering that the EVO has no root right now yeah, I would have taken the Nexus.
EDIT: That being said, if anyone has a Nexus only because they have/had a non-rootable EVO, PM me if you want to trade.

At this point, as a matter of principal -- I think I would have chosen the Nexus (if you care about root.)
Even though the EVO is the better phone, people of this community to continue to support phones that are being locked down on purpose, and then re-locked on firmware updates seems detrimental.
Unless of course you are someone who enjoys hacking, cracking, exploiting, or waiting for a security hole -- just to maybe someday have root. Personally, I want to go with a phone where most of the development time for custom roms and mods does not have to be wasted cracking boot loaders.....

I think that karma must be messing with me, because this afternoon my EVO was damaged catastrophically. I thought to myself "no biggie, because they're going to offer me a Nexus when I try to replace it so I won't be stuck with a non-rooted phone". Well, bullsh*t. Assurion or whatever the hell its called said they had plenty of newer EVOs available.
Would love to know how you were offered a Nexus, bud, because I even went through retentions trying to get this resolved and no dice. They did offer to pay half my deductible, which is something, but boy am I pissed off right now.
Probably because his was a warranty issue not an insurance claim.
For the record, I'd take the Nexus S.
getting the nexus s tomorrow from koodo

As far as I can tell, the GPS works like a charm. Just a warning, though, that the compass doesn't. I came from a Nexus One and the compass in the S is, for lack of a better term, jumpy. This is *the only* issue I've found in the hardware though.
Long story short, if you rely on the compass, it may not be the best choice. If you don't, it's perfect.
I've found, though, that most phones have some sort of hardware quirk. For example, the touchscreen on the N1 didn't support multitouch...and it had the dreaded power button issue. For me, the NS's issue are a step up.
But the choice is yours
Hope this helps,

Battery life is really good. I would choose this phone over any phone. Especially the evo. My friend has an evo and she can't even get 5 hours of battery life with little use.

Battery life is amazing. I'd pick this phone over any other as well. GPS is weak compared to my Nexus One. Phone loses GPS lock while driving because phone is placed 1.5 feet down and away from the windshield. Works fine if placed up on dash closer to windshield. Very weak, never had such GPS weakness with the Nexus One.
Do you guys still think it is worth getting the Nexus S right now? Or would waiting for the Nexus Prime be a better option...

There will always be something else coming out just over the horizon. I'd keep an eye our for hardware bugs in whatever you provide..
If there aren't any that you consider to be showstoppers you may as well take the plunge.

My wife and I both have Epics, but she's dropped hers enough times now that the screen is totally cracked and it will need to be replaced... Rather than pay to repair it, I'd rather replace it... But with what? What's the best thing since sliced cheese that's available (or will be available shortly) for Sprint? Looking at the current stock of available Sprint phones, I might be inclined to go with the Galaxy S II / Epic 4G Touch if it weren't for the fact that I'm so unhappy with Samsung's dismal support for the Epic...
So what does everyone recommend? Is there something coming out just over the horizon that we should hold out for?
If you need something now, nothing.
But if you can wait a bit, the galaxy nexus should be coming to sprint.
The gs2 has better specs (sans screen) but the nexus is guaranteed to get updates unlike our epics
