[Q] Need to Replace Epic... With What? - Epic 4G General

My wife and I both have Epics, but she's dropped hers enough times now that the screen is totally cracked and it will need to be replaced... Rather than pay to repair it, I'd rather replace it... But with what? What's the best thing since sliced cheese that's available (or will be available shortly) for Sprint? Looking at the current stock of available Sprint phones, I might be inclined to go with the Galaxy S II / Epic 4G Touch if it weren't for the fact that I'm so unhappy with Samsung's dismal support for the Epic...
So what does everyone recommend? Is there something coming out just over the horizon that we should hold out for?

If you need something now, nothing.
But if you can wait a bit, the galaxy nexus should be coming to sprint.
The gs2 has better specs (sans screen) but the nexus is guaranteed to get updates unlike our epics

If it still works I would wait for the LTE handsets in 2012. The 800SMR coverage will be a big plus too.

That spectrum won't be used for lte until identified is switched off. That's getting into 2013.

I agree, I switched over to Nexus S 4G since I'm not currently eligible for upgrade through Sprint. But if I was, that new Nexus would be the way to go!!
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

you could always buy a nexus s 4g off ebay for like 200 bucks. then sell it on ebay in a few months when the galaxy nexus comes out for maybe 100 bucks. i hear the photon is pretty good.

Yeah, sammy can go screw themselves... If you want a phone that all the features actually work I'd stay away from them. I hear good things about the Photon and for my Sprint phone I picked up a HTC device.

I might be ready for some Nexus Prime !
I'm wondering I got the nexus s 4g 4 days ago at best buy & payed them 30$ for there buy back program where I can bring my phone back in 6 months & they would give 50% retail of what it cost so it would be 350$ then I can just pay the difference remaining & can get the Prime!!

You would be better off selling your nexus on ebay or craigslist and then buying the prime.

Count me in. I've had an upgrade since April and have been holding for the GSII, but when I heard about the next Nexus, I decided to hold off until details are confirmed. If it's coming to Sprint, and if so, when.

Nexus S on Ebay used are going for around 200. If he can get 350 back for it the Best Buy buyback thing would definitely be better. Then hit Ebay to get a prime.
a bit strange that they'd bring this out at pretty much the same time the iPhone 5 hits stores, no? perhaps they know something about the iPhone not coming out until later than is anticipated and are hoping to get the jump on it.
I thought the Prime was going to be Verizon exclusive for at least a month or two. Was that just a rumor?

This is my new phone. I don't trust the rumors, but the general sense is that Verizon exclusivity is not going to last too long - maybe a few months. Also, Verizon is offering it as a Droid Prime, so it is likely not to be a pure Google experience phone. I was thinking of jumping ship to VZW due to piss poor Sprint coverage if it was not for the 2GB data cap (generally use slightly more than that a month).

Need help with a decision!

I have a chance to trade my nexus s 4g for an evo 3d. I've been back and forth trying to decide what with the ics launch imminent. Should I go for it?
From Degobah
if you want the OTA updates first, keep the ns.
anyways i would never sell my NS or something. maybe later i'll get the newest nexus (from google.). once I have a google phone its hard to let go of it
Right! That's my biggest indecision! I had the epic before this...and I don't care of it's Sammy, HTC, or Moto, it's going to take a looong time for those phones to get updated. I'm just falling victim to wanting the dual core and bigger screen. Bit after the whole epic 4g fiasco...I don't know if I want to take that risk again.

That's how they make money. Tempt the customers with awesome specs, then make the product obsolete as soon as possible by keeping the software updated for just a short time.
I don't care about the latest hardware, I want the latest software. That's why I'm keeping my Nexus S.
I remember a user here who traded his Evo 3d for a nexus s. Going from nexus s to evo 3d is not an 'upgrade' in my opinion.

ahm.. evo 3d is not that good imho. If you are going to upgrade make it at least something like a GS2. Community support for that phone is big. So even if that phone don't get early ICS, the developers will have a stable ICS rom on it.

I was stuck with the hboot1.5 and it was a pain in the ass to root. I didn't want to do it the HTC method. Plus I also noticed on numerous 3D phones that they had an issue with on time and awake time. They would be close to equal. I think it was due to the software 2.3.4

Maybe, but so far I haven't found anyone to trade for an epic touch 4g. Plus after the 2 snafus propagated by Samsung with original epic, I'll pass, plus all the Los issues with it...no thanks. I'm sure for an upgrade in January, so I'll just hold on to this until the galaxy nexus his for sprint.

i traded my evo 3d for a nexus s 4g and $150. I love the nexus s the evo 3d had weak battery, dev community pretty low, and was a brick.

For the people having second thoughts about the epic touch 4g

All I got go say is if you have a upgrade coming up soon this is the phone to get. If your worried about the lack of a physical keyboard trust me I feel your pain but after having this phone for about 3days already I can honestly say I don't miss the physical keyboard at all. This phone is so much earlier to root and install customs roms. The speed is incredible and with the right rom and kernel combo you can easily get over 6000 on the benchmarks score. Oh if your short on cash don't worry what ever corporate sprint store you go to they will buy back your old epic for 80.00. If you got an upgrade coming the touch is the way to go. Did I mention front facing video recorder. Well anyway it was indeed a pleasure being apart of this wonderful forum for over a year I hope to see you soon over on the epic touch forums. Take care.

Why would people update only to be stuck on contract for two years with no LTE? Plus the keyboard is still a need for me or a bigger screen the Galaxy Nexus sized screen is looking good for me. You mentioned it was easier to root and install custom ROM on the ET4G how exactly can it be easier than a one click root on froyo or flashing clockwork mod on gingerbread, then flashing a ROM in clockwork?...also with CM7(which is official on our phone now) we get front facing camera video recording also. So I don't really see the need to get an ET4G
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Negatives:
-800x480 screen: So 2 years ago. 1280x720 AMOLED or bust.
-WiMax: They're not expanding to my area, so I'd rather go with the future LTE.
-Quad-Core phones are coming out. Higher performance ceiling at the same battery use, or even less with newer deep sleep modes.
My upgrade isn't until june, so I'll be going Quad-core.
While the ET4G is undoubtedly the best Sprint phone, I don't think it is worth using an upgrade on. The OG Epic is still a very good phone and is only getting better thanks to the great work of our devs. I will be using my upgrade on a quad core LTE 1280x720 monster phone. Probably the GS3.
Wait for an LTE device. Would be the best logical phone choice imo

iPod Touch 3G waiting on iPod Touch 4G (Maybe...)
Playstation 2 waiting on Playstation 4

...
???
i was thinking about the white epic touch, but wouldn't use an upgrade for it, just the tax refund.
See a lot of people waiting on the GS3 but the 2 isn't that old, how long would it be till 3 comes out? Are there official mumblings of a 3 with specs n such or is this all just assumption?
No 4G in my area and who knows when I'll get it, not sure waiting on LTE is worth it.
*edit* also I wouldn't be using an upgrade if I did get a new one, just pay for it straight up. Store guys hate it when you get a phone without a contract though.

Want a new phone early? Here's how!

http://www.sprintfeed.com/2012/02/sprint-to-offer-early-upgrade-buyout-program/
The article basically explains that if you have had your phone for longer than 9 months, you can "upgrade now" for a slightly higher price. For example, I will have had my Epic for 18 months as of March, meaning I will only have to pay $19 more than the original upgrade fee, and can get a new phone 4 months earlier than what I originally intended to do.
The deal only lasts until April 14 of this year, so if you're willing to spend an extra $20, you can get a new phone today (or next month, assuming you had your phone in September)!
I'm guessing they're trying to empty inventory of epic touch, photon, etc before the summer's new phones hit.

Well to be honest, this "upgrade now" idea doesn't really apply to us. It does, however, apply to people like my dad who was cursed with the Samsung Intercept, and knowing there's a way to upgrade 4 months earlier for only $20 more made him exhilarated.

I really dislike how sprint and American carriers as a whole usually are last in line for phone releases, I'm guessing the nexus will drop around may-june and then the GS3 maybe august or September ?
