Why do we need Custom roms??

I am a noob when it comes to this,
I know that some roms offer customization with different user experience
add or remove some fetures or stuff from the standard rom.
or maybe even "optimize" some apps.
is that to it with custom roms?
also is there a guide for comparative page between roms offered by people here?

Well, depends for what are you using your phone/device.
If you are searching for performance optimized ROM and you find that stock HTC original ROM is slow than take a look at this thread and first post with comparative xls-table results as attachment.

In many cases custom ROMs have custom optimizations and customizations. Are they better than stock? In most cases they are but at the same time they introduce some problems and have bugs ... but that is the price to be paid for being on the cutting edge of technology anyway.
In most cases custom ROMs are better and it comes to personal taste for certain features. If you are satisfied with your device as it is, you don't have to change anything. On the other hand, you can also read few threads and you will very quickly realize what are the differences between certain ROM creators and their ROMs.
I personally always search for a ROM that is close as it can be to stock ROM but with newest stable build (not necessary build with highest number), most of useful tweaks incorporated and nice and functional theme.

Keep in mind i been outa loop with WM sense t-mobile wing, but inprocess of getting rom you also get ROOT access and most roms will overclock the phone slightly like mentioned above there ussally quicker.

I am just seeing that the rom threads have replies \ minute, which means its really hard to keep up with issues and fixes from threads, unless the first post is actually edited.

LeeDroid VS Revolution

What are your thoughts on the best sense roms at the min?

Threads about what is the better ROM are not liked much on XDA. This is because the quality of a ROM is about personal preference.
Also, debating what ROM is best can discriminate some developers that are working hard, just because some people like their ROM less. Other people won't try it out then, while maybe the ROM suits them best.
Besides that, it's just not nice towards the devs. It's like having two artists both comming to you with a painting and then telling to one his/her painting isn't good and to the other his/her painting is much better, while your knowledge about art isn't even so good (at least not so good as the artists).
I do get you want to know what ROM (if that is the case) to choose, but then just look at what the devs say about their ROM and the recent reactions from users. Then you get an idea what to expect. Also, it can't hurt to try them out .

Speaking honestly, when I first joined XDA, I too used to ask questions like the OP. However, my views have changed. Each "Chef" cooks his own rom in a different way, as their roms are aimed at different target groups. Thus each rom will have its own advantages, disadvantages and more, making each rom taste "unique". The only way you know what you like is by trying something new everyday or when the opportunity arises. The same goes with flashing. Download both roms (and more) flash them, spend a few days and see how it feels for you. If you like it, keep it. On the other hand, if you can't be bothered to even flash...why are you on XDA?

Agreeing with both of the guys/girls..presuming guys, while your intentions are good, its all personal preference.

So people won't answer because its not fair on the dev? I hardly think so, basing a question on personal preference wouldn't harm any support a dev would get from followers

Its not like I'm asking for faults, one will have different features not necessarily better just different, all I wanted to know is what made people choose the rom

Maybe a better question would be - what are the main differences between LeeDroid and Revolution? Then you could make an informed decision as to which to try (or which to try first at least).
I'm using LeeDroid now, but I'm curious as to how Revolution differs and if I should give that a shot as well. Doing a bit of a scan of the Revolution thread doesn't show anything obvious, but I'm sure there are differences.

I myself have been browsing both threads as just rooted my DHD & unsure which to give a try first.
Gonna wait for their next updates & see which appears to be the most solid.
Not to sure if I wanna go Sense or NoSense, possibly the latter.

But all some of us wants to know is what are the differences? like lees is targeted at what kind of users? Revolution is more for who... and stuff like that...
Its like some likes the PSP and some the NDS... PSP for more mature and action gamers while NDS is more for the kids and ladies... and of course there are exceptions and thats where flashing both roms comes... but first we just wanna know, what is what?. . .

Anyway you left out RcmixHD. Which is an equally good rom just different. Some people prefer vanilla ice cream.
Leedroid and Revolution are the most popular but that isn't strictly the same as being the best.

I am about to flash a custom rom for this phone (first time flash on my dhd)
And i looked at the threads but i dont see the differences.
though here i see there are differences but they arent mentioned.

There is no major differences between ARHD and Leedroid because they both support the ideea of "close to stock as much as possible" ideea but with many optimizations and custom kernels which also gives more battery life and a very smooth experience.
The only thing i would say that differs is the kernels but no major differences i would say because ARHD uses Apache kernel and Leedroid uses his own kernel which has some things from Apache kernel but Apache has some things from lee`s kernel and so on.
Personally i am with Leedroid since 1.1 version and i`m more than satisfied, i found him more experienced but it`s just matter of prefference.

You're best bet is really just to test them
Flash one, make a backup in recovery, use it for a few days and see how you like it.
Flash the other, make another backup, use it for a few days and see how you like that one.
If you like 2nd one best you don't need to do anything else, but if you decide you like the 1st one best just restore the backup.
No one should ever feel tied into one ROM as it's so easy to flash and test others. I used to try 3 or 4 a week on my Hero back when chef's were knocking them out in quick succession
Personally I've only ever used ARHD on my DHD but am keen to try LeeDroid and VillainROM too (I was a big Villain fan on Hero). Problem for me is finding the time!

i think i will go with revolution first because i found everything i need for that.
the site for leedroid is a little unclear to me..

I've been using Leeroid for a couple of days. I was hoping for better battery consumption over stock, but the difference isn't substantial. I also find that the auto-brightness is too low for my liking. And there seems to be a couple of transition glitches, as far as I can tell. I plan to use it for a week before trying out Revolution.

LeeDroid it s better for the look but Revolution it s faster than LeeDroid

I have tried LeeDroid only once and it is crap..
I really recommend Android Revolution HD 2.0.12, it is REALLY fast! And ARHD's developing speed is fast. You will get updates almost every week, some times twice... It will include much themes and if you don't like Sense, you can install NoSense mod. I recommend!

Best N7 ROMS?

Looking to get a N7 soon when the price drops start. Was wondering what do you guys think the best ROMs out so far are. Looking for silky smooth usage for the most part. Mainly will be used for web surfing, so whatever can make web pages load faster would be nice!
Will be using a different kernel that will allow better battery life as well.
So opinions on best ROMs? Would be nice if you've tried many recent ROM's to provide feedback on

If its mainly for surfing then stay on stock, install aosp browser as chrome is slow and switch to franco kernel.
A rom will not make amything faster only a kernel can. You can turn off animations to speed it up but even stock rom can do that.

I still want a different ROM. Such as Glazed Jelly bean, Paranoid or whatever they were. They were visually a lot more pleasing, and the ROMs themselves I believe were leaner as well?

MUST [email protected]!#@!! :laugh: Now a days... I pick a ROM, I pick a kernel that looks like it's frequently updated, well maintained and has an engaging developer and stick with it. There really is no best.. Just the one that suites your needs.. Speed.. Eh.. Unless you're a benchmark or FPS junkie almost any ROM on the N7 is going to fly.. This tablet is a beast..
Just read the threads in development.. Look to see what's up to 4.1.2 standards, see what is frequently updated, see what users feedback is, see how the dev responds to feedback, look at the features... Pick three and try them out.. I guarantee one will trap you and that's the one for you.. It'll just hit you.. A ROM that is the `best' for me may not necessarily be the best ROM for you.

This is great advice! I've lost count of how many ROMs have been on my n7 now. I settle on one for a week or so, then get itchy feet and try another ;p Grass is always greener and all that!

I recommend stock rom ，stablet

I am using paranoid android. The screen looks much bigger in tablet mode + the option of expanded desktop. Combined with franco kernel its a winner. I use my device for gaming and now franco has gpu freq change on the fly so it suits me well.

I'm running cyanogenmod with Franco kernel, after having a lot of trouble from another rom. My advice is to make sure a rom has been out a a day or so and read the thread to make sure there are no major problems.

There is no "best" ROM for a individual user. Different ROMs offer pro and cons, so it best for users to read the Development threads and make the own informed decision based on there needs. People often get a little over passionate about there preferred ROM, so these type of threads are best closed before the flames begin. The only exception to this is poll threads to determine the number of users using different ROMs.​

Feeling a bit overwhelemed

Hi all,
I have had my one for a while now and have been lurking around the forums for the most part. I have done S-OFF, Rooting, Recovery and many other tweaks. Now that 4.2.2 is hitting the rom scene for us I am wanting to dive into a rom but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the options.
Obviously the ROMS fall into 2 categories of sense and vanilla and there is obvious advantages to both sides. I want to try a more factory build so I have been considering flashing the recent dump of the GE One but there are some things like Pie control and custom DPI settings that I very much want to use and would like it if they were baked in rather than needed me to side load.
I am hoping that you all can give me some advice on some good 4.2 Vanilla roms to try out. Maybe Kang, Paranoid, CM... and I know there is a lot of other well known ROM makers around here with ROMS I do not recognize the names of (Carbon, Viper, Revolt). So if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.

I am on the verge of the GE rom but going to wait for stock 4.2.2 then decide after if that helps

Yeah I wouldnt mind waiting but I dont mind flashing back and have been looking forward to trying out stock or AOSP on the one for a while just not sure where the various AOSP roms stand right now as far as ease of use, bugs, and general smoothness.

Just try out a few and see which ones you like

Once you've got the hang of flashing ROMs and using titanium backup to move your apps across them, you'll have no problem changing between ROMs regularly. Once you find something that works for you, stick with it for a while then see if anything else grabs your attention.

I am currently using ViperOne ROM, and love it. Its very smooth and offers a huge amount of customization options.
Aside from the above, I also can highly recommend Android Revolution HD, and TrickDroid. Both are very smooth, stable, and have large followings with great dev support right here on XDA. On a side note, Viper and TrickDroid do have close ties from a developer standpoint. Viper is the ROM intended to offer total customization, where as TrickDroid is a more stock ROM.
Either way, Ive tried a lot of ROMs on my One but the above three have really stood out to me.

We generally don't allow best ROM threads or ROM comparison threads because they are usually very subjective. Try them all and choose what you think is the best, not what others think is the best Thread closed.

I'm coming from the Amaze, and before that, the Nexus One and the G1. I like the camera app on my S4, and i haven't tried S-Voice yet. Outside of these features though, i'm not sure i care for the original stock rom. I saw a poll for what everyone thought was the best Rom for the i9500, i was wondering about opinions of the i9505 variant.
Looking for really good battery life, all the features of the stock camera (if not more) and better responsiveness than the stock rom. I figure i should stick with TW based roms for now until i find apps that can replace them. My main purpose in this phone was the ability to run mirrorlink to my car's stereo, so i can't loose that either.
So then, what is everyone's favorite TouchWiz based rom? Or, if you prefer, what rom has at the very least the same features as the stock rom for the camera? Is there something that equals s-voice? Can i still mirrorlink with that rom?

First off there is a whole separate section for t mobile variant discussions that will give you a lot more relevant information for the t mobile device.
Second, threads about what the best ROM are generally are not welcome on xda because it is an impossible question. Only you can decide what the best ROM is for you. What makes battery life great on my ROM might severely limit your ability to use it the way you prefer. Everything depends on your taste, and how you use the phone. The only way to decide what ROM is best is to start flashing them and testing.

I'm not a newb to xda. I didn't ask for a best, i asked for opinions of favorites. I feel there is a BIG difference there. Now, i did mention that i saw a poll for what people thought was the best rom for the non-T-Mo variant, but that only inspired this thread in part.
Hopefully i can get some real responses regarding what other people find as their favorite roms based on the criteria i'm looking for, or reasons why another rom is their favorite in general. I don't really have the time to sit and flash roms all day long anymore.
