[Q] Cannot fastboot/flash my device with FreeXperia - Xperia Play General

Hi,
I've been lurking in the forums for a few months now, and have found them incredibly helpful.
First things first. I have an xperia play from Rogers in Canada. It is currently updated to 2.3.3 (via the seus tool) but not rooted.
I am trying to flash my device with the free xperia project image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128216, but i have run into some problems.
I have downloaded the image and can get the command prompt to show up. It sits at "waiting for device"
I try to get the device to go into "flash" mode by holding down the back button and inserting the usb. I've been looking around the forums here and some people report that this mode is indicated by a flashing blue led on the power button. My power button turns (and stays) a solid green and the "waiting for device" message never goes away.
I have tested the "flash" mode with the official Sony update tool found http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/mobilephones/downloads/subject/updateservice/xperia-play?cc=ca&lc=en and it seems to be working fine. It detects the device, tells me the software is up to date, and offers to wipe and re-install a fresh copy of the OS.
What am I doing wrong? I would like to install the free Xperia project, mostly so i can play with overclocking my cpu. Any help would be appreciated.
If it's any help I also can't seem to flash with flashtool either.
Thanks!

If you want it to go blue, you have to hold the search button, not the back button. That Should solve it

hm.. I guess you need an unlocked bootloader.... but I'm not sure..

Thanks,
I tried the search button. All it does when i plug it in holding the search button is to bring up the Sony Ericsson splash screen, and then the power button goes orange.
Is it possible that I need an unlocked bootloader? I think I read somewhere that the bootloader on the Rogers play is locked down and has not been cracked yet.

Need it unlocked

And at this time there's no way to get it unlocked with a simlocked phone?
Because I guess i'll have to wait for that, or for someone to crack 2.3.3/4 so i can at least re-root my device.

you cannot issue fastboot commands "fastboot erase, fastboot flash. fastboot boot, ect" without an unlocked bootloader, i know its a pain but there is no way around it atm, im sure the dev scene on xda will have a work around for you soon

or you can do that if you really want root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119074 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090

I tried doing that but I couldn't get flashtool to see my phone (I was using the new beta version)
*edit*
(i tried it both on win7 32 bit and win7 64 bit)... maybe i need to do some driver kung fu?

you can use seus? if yes, you have the drivers ( I guest )...
And it work like seus, same button to hold... what is the version of your phone? R800a, R800i?

the "about phone" says that it is an r800a
I do the same thing (hold the back button and plug in the usb) with flashtool but it doesn't see the phone and start the flash (the regular sony update program does.)

So i replaced the drivers that the sony update tool installed with the drivers that came with flashtool. (in device manager i uninstalled sony xperia play and manually replaced them with the files in the flashtool\drivers folder)
I was then able to use the UK image via flashtool to roll back to 2.3.2, root, and then update.
I still can't install FreeXperia (or maybe i just can't think of a way how)... but i have current version 2.3.3/4 and it is rooted.
Thanks guys!

Xperia Issues.

hey guys ive been looking for the past 3 days im hoping i can get some help. so my girlfriends brother got a x10 and it got stuck on the sony ericsson screen. he then asked a sony rep what to do, the rep said oh yeah just re flash it. so he tried not really experianced in this sort of stuff. he then i guess tried to flash lol now the phone doesnt do anything it just has that green light on top right. now im used to using the windows roms an such not that experianced with andriod nor this device. so this is why i finally broke in an decided to ask.. lol thanks in advance
I'd just go to Sony Ericsson's website, download the updater and run it. Should reimage the phone back to what it's supposed to be.
tried that. it says phone is up to date

even if it says up to date click on install it will repair the phone.
just gives me the Exit option is there a diffrent tool? other then Seus?
looks like it's stuck on Flash screen. Same thing happens after you remove the battery and re-place?
If so, I suggest you go through the Root process as provided here on XDA. That will load an image for you at least, then you can either 'Keep it rooted' (RECOMMENDED) or just reflash a stock image for X10 (a or i) whichever one you got.
that whole root process i tried that. and everytime i try it fails. i will try again tho. and how do i know what version i have??
It should mention it there where your looking at root. btw we may be able to help if you could tell us the error?

Try using SE PC Companion
Try go to SE website, download the updater *not PC companion*
and go from there.
He already tried the updater. Updater = SEUS.
Now try PC Companion
just out of curiosity anyone able to pull 3g network on AT&T?
and that PC Companion didnt work
it wouldnt let me connect. cuz the phone is stuck in flash mode? im assuming nothing comes on the screen besides an green light top right;
Last i can think of is Omnius. Its a free Sony Ericsson flasher.
When that happened to me I was still able to use SEUS.. Even when it says I already have the latest firmware it still gives me the option to reinstall
omnius is what messed it up to begin with. haha maybe he tried to flash the wrong firmware? im not sure. can you link me to correct way to use omnius?
A quick write up for using Omnius.
Download these files:
Omnius ZIP 1
Omnius ZIP 2
R2BA023 ROOT
Then go to www.omnius-server.com, register, download omnius and activate account.
Connect Data cable to phone only (switched off) and run omnius.
In omnius settings -> server settings enter username and password
In phonetype drop down list select x10
Hit the flash button (looks like lightning)
In the next prompt select R1FA016_APP_SW_RACHAEL_GENERIC_1227_4612_S1_SW_LIVE_AC12_0001_S1_PARTITION.zip as the 1st file and R7A_R1FA016_FSP_X10i_GENERICGLOBAL_GGL_GENERIC_1232_9897_S1_SW_LIVE_AC12_0001_S1_PARTITION_WITH_SPARE.zip as the second file.
Press ok and hold the back button on phone whilst connecting phone to laptop/pc
Wait till its finished flashing.
OPTIONAL:
Boot phone up and go to applications -> tick unknown sources then select development and select debugging mode.
Extract R2BA023-RooT.rar and run step 2 then step 3.
P.S do not restore previous systems settings but its ok to restore phonebook, sms, mms and call log.
Good Luck
Regards
that 2nd file, isnt complete. it wont download as a .zip any place i can go to get the file.
i got the zip working. well this is the deal i tried omnius again an it didnt work. the phone is still stuck in flash mode. i still cant figure out the root process. is there anyway to hard reset from device? i cant seem to find that anywhere to get it out of flash mode.
Try removing the battery for 5 mins re-inserting...then...
Just after you have selected the zip files in Omnius and pressed ok... hold both menu key and back key simultaneously and see if that works.

Any hope for this X8?

Not rooted, no ROMs, just won't boot past SE logo.
Can't get into ADB as before this happened, the development box wasn't ticked.
Could do with someone telling me how to get into Fastboot (and if it's possible).
Much love ~
just relax mate, reflash using SEUS (Sony ericson update service) download it on sony ericsson.. just follow the instuction in it and it will be alright.
Hi there,
The SEUS thing is rubbish. I hold the back button like it asks (when plugging in USB) and doesn't allow me to progess. The other application (PCC) is not what I need, but SEUS is in the right direction.
Got SEUS working, installed the original update.
Then installed xrecovery and rooted and threw a 2.3 ROM on. Looking good!
Case closed!

Cannot Bring Japan ARC into flash Mode

Hello guys,
I 'm experiencing the problem as I cant bring my ARC to flash mode,
Can some body share the experience to me?
I tried [return + USB] and [Menu + USB], both fail for flash mode.
Kindly to share the procedure for unlocking the simlock in arc
Is your device sim-unlocked?
To get into flash mode, you turn off the phone and after 5 second press and hold the back button(far left button) and then plug the usb into the phone.

I had a similar problem when I was trying to flash my x10a to get rid of the AT&T crapware and outdated 1.6. Here is my experience with the x10a last year when I got it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10198269#post10198269
The issue had something to do with the version of windows I was running, and the drivers on SEUS not being compatible. The flashtool could never find it, and the phone would get out of flashmode in 10 seconds, and actually turn on.
I ended up using the non graphic flashtool as the alternative option, and it solved my problem. I don't know if you have that option for the Xperia Arc, but I suggest you look into that. Hope you find a solution to your problem. Good luck.

[Q] Xperia Play wont boot after update to 2.3.3 from 2.3.2 Sony over Wifi Help

Hello Guys
I have a UK Sony Xperia Play which was rooted- using the rooted 2.3.3 kernel Originally and was updated by sony from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 which worked ok before I rooted the device.
I then decided to use another members rooted firmware which worked - Please see here :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145729
I wanted to reflash to with 2.3.2 which worked then I did a sony update again over wifi and after that I could not boot the phone at all it just vibrates nothing happens - no boot logo- I have reset the phone by taking the battery out and it is fully charged and it does work in flash mode but when I try to reflash the rom again it using flash-tool and stock firmware the software says it has been done but does not boot. Any thoughts on why this is.The Bootloader has been unlocked previous to root
Thanks
Mark
You've unlocked your bootloader AND updated Over The Air?

Be careful what ever you do because you can destroy your radio if you use the wrong fix.
I have not had your problem but I believe there is a fix binary made as long as you have done nothing to the phone since you bricked it
Edit: /\ lol a little slow I guess /\

Hi
I had the same problem with my xperia play (R8000i), after upload over wifi, my xperia play doesn´t work. i can´t do the fastboot neather the battery charge.
I already made the FlashTool with: R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World.ftf and Xperia Play_Release_Generic UK.ftf
The FlashTool Works successfull but xperia play don´t boot.
Someone here already have the solution for that?
Thanks
I have the exact same issue, what's the fix?
EDIT: OK, rather than start a brand new thread I thought I'd just reply here.
Basically, I unlocked and bootloader of my phone and rooted it ages ago, and totally forgot the dire warnings about OTA updates. I spotted someone on here mention that they'd installed an OTA update on a rooted phone and decided to do it, as I've noticed that my Play is really buggy of late.
Of course, this has bricked my phone. When I press the power button the phone just vibrates, and if I hold it in, it vibrates every few seconds.
I've tried plugging the phone into the PC in recovery mode (holding down back, green light comes on) but my PC says I need an S1boot Download driver (which I swear to god I already have, I think I needed it to unlock the bootloader in the first place!). I've followed all instructions, downloaded the drivers and pointed the installer in the right location but I keep getting a message that says the hardware cannot be installed.
I'm running Windows XP, by the way. Can anyone help a foolish soul?
S1Boot Download issue solved: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17497338#post17497338
OK already have this driver installed and can use the FlashTool normally, but the Xperia play does not start, and I can not put them in the way fastboot mode.
When I press the power button the phone just vibrates, and if I hold it in, it vibrates every few seconds.
I have used the PC Companion and Update Service did not work
Does anyone have a solution?
You need to wait for the prompt to connect your phone in Flashtool. When prompted, you have to hold down the 'back' button when you plug in the USB cable. The power light should go green to indicate the phone is in fastboot mode.
Had already done this process.
I already made the FlashTool with: R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World.ftf and Xperia Play_Release_Generic UK.ftf
The FlashTool Works successfull but xperia play don´t boot.
You need to flash the special unbrick tft, it's on the forums somewhere
Fastboot = BLUE light (search button+usb). Used to flash/boot with fastboot commands from a cmd window on a pc/laptop and such.
Flash mode = GREEN light (back button+usb). Used when flashing with flashtool.

Duddyroar thanks
But I did a search on forum and did not find the file tft unbrick.
You could put the link?

[info] What is Flashtool & Fastboot (updated 30/08-11).

It seems that people are confused with these to terms and some misguidens has occured. I started this thread to clear it up
1. Flashtool is like using pc companion or SEUS to flash a specific FW. It uses a .ftf file extension and works on phones with or without locked bootloaders. It can only flash stock roms. You get into flashtool mode by turning off your phone and pressing the hardware 'back' button and then connecting the USB cable to your phone. Done correctly and you should se a green light on the power button.
Link to flashtool. Make sure you use the beta version (0.2.9.1) wich is the one that supports our play.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
2. Fastboot is a tool you use with a command promt (cmd) on your pc. It's only for people with unlocked bootloaders. It's used for flashing custom roms, kernels, splashscreens, custom recovery etc. everything modyfied. It is also used to unlock your bootloader. You get into fastboot mode by turning off your phone, then pressing the hardware 'search' button and connecting the USB to your phone. Done correctly and you should see a blue light on the power button. Afaik carrier and sim locked devices can't unlock the bootloader this way. If you fall under that category check this link out for help. It will cost you a little money, but by the response of people who already done it, itsems woth the dough
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232050
A link to a thread started by RacecarBMW. It's a reference thread for easy access to info and links to roms/kernels/guides etc.
