Your radio, your selection of rom. I tell you this much, put on vaelpak 3.2 RC2 rom on your phone and you def won't be having those problems. Watch that evo come to life!

I have already loaded a rom sorry I should have mention that before. I have loaded the EVO ZONE rom and ClockMod Recovery. Can I flash a up to date/ better radio with out flashing the entire rom?
Just try to update profile and update prl and see if that works. You should do that after flashing.
I did it but my 3G speeds are bad. I ran a speedtest while in a good 3G service area and was getting 0.4kbps down. I would like to go back to the stock Sense rom but dummy me didnt back it up.
I'm also experiencing the same issue(s)
I totally agree with ropodope. It can definitely be the rom, I used the original Miui and noticed I had poor reception where I would normally have good reception. It could be the radio or maybe even the kernel, my suggestion would be try different roms and kernels because you can find what works best on your phone.
Good luck.

Ok I am running the lastest EVO ZONE rom what other roms would be good for a HTC EVO 4G?

It can't be the kernel as the kernel plays no role in reception at all.

Yes you can download updated radios or previous radios to find your trouble spot. Just dl them to your sd card and flash as you would a rom or a kernel. Wipe your cache and dalvik cache first. Wait a couple of minutes to allow the radio to write the image. When done flashing, just reboot. The radios are on here. Just do a search.

It could legitamatley be your coverage area was reduced. See http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/281992#281992 for details. You can call Sprint and get an Airave.

You have any suggestion on getting a good radio to flash?
You should try downloading rom manager from the market. I'm sure there is a few stock evo roms on there. If you can't find a rom that is to your liking you can check the roms in the evo 4G development forums here on XDA. Be sure to read about the roms and what others are saying about the rom before you flash. A lot of the time I find that after seeing 10 to 20 people complain about the same or similar issues I wouldn't be satisfied with that rom, but that's just me.

I love my AirRave! Def great where Sprint signal isn't avail!
Here are your radios, and other nifty updates: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
As far as 3g I have tried this fix with good results:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
To be honest, Ive had bad reception with PRI 1.77 and 1.90. Also my roms are varying day to day i try new ones.
roms i think are good are MikZ, mikG, Evokings and other sense roms.
When I got my phone in January I had GREAT signal here at work. I noticed that after I rooted it I lost that great signal. Now I'm back to 1-0 bars all day. I think something in the rooting process screws the signal, I don't know much about it so I'm not sure what that could be. All I know is before I rooted my phone I sat at work with 3g signal in the basement of the building. After rooting I'm lucky to get 2 bars in the parking lot. I ran just the rooted stock for 2 months hoping it would magically clear itself up but of course it didn't
I've tried 3 ROMS so far. Fresh 4.0, MikFroyo & VaelPak. Of the 3 I seem to get a slightly better signal with VP.

Well I tried Rom manager and it seem to work got a stock rooted Rom which works pretty good. Does anyone know how to unroot? Unfortunately I didn't backup the Sprint stock Rom when I rooted it. I try ruu but it failed.

Feels like every 30 seconds or so my 3G up/down arrows are replaced with a nasty looking red D? Have I missed a fix for this, or is its just that I'm unaware of a fault of the Continuum. Droid never did this. Even searching through the xda forums my 3G drops like nobodies business. If you guys know what I'm talking about let me know. Seriously, just switched from my Droid days ago and been in all the same places. Never had this problem.
EDIT:
2.2.1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Baseband: S:i400.0.6V.DL17

also make sure your prl is updated open your dialer and dial *228 then itll ask u to activate press 1 or update your roaming capabilities press 2 make sure you press 2 wait for it to finish then reboot.
Great guys thanks for the help, running MUCH better now!
Flashed to EC07 clean and everything is working but the radio is still responding like crap. Every 30 seconds it goes back to D mode and I lose my connection. It's not the area I'm in. I'm on campus at Kent State University... can anyone else think of what might be causing this issue?
Did you update the base band then, or did you just do the prl update?

newest prl should be 52599 i just updated mine a couple days ago also try running a speed test it could just be verizon has bad data coverage in your area or its really bogged down.
i get around 1.4mbs down from verizon at my house but if you live in a city were a lot of people are using the same cell site youll probably be looking at speeds in the 400-800kbps range
Hi all,
I am fairly new to modding and would like to ask a quick question that may be simple for some of you.
I have a MT4G "Glacier" and I did some steps found on this forum to root and install a custom firmware on my phone. For the past two weeks, I must have installed about 28 ROMS. Yeah, I know... I have too much free time.
Here is the issue. I have not found a single rom that can do it all. With some roms, my 4G speed don't work. With others, my screen flickers too. The last one I installed, doesn't have sense. No matter what I do, I can't get a rom where my 4G speed works, which I can't live without since I use my phone as hotspot all the time.
The rom that I like the most was [ROM] [ICS] Glacier_One_V_1.3 (9/24/2012) because it has BEATS audio, is based on ICS and it has sense 4.0 which looks and works great. I would love to find one that has all the bells and whistles like this one, but where I can still use my 4G speeds and my screen is not flashing all the time.
I understand that the RADIO is what controls the WIFI, cell signal, etc. Can I update the radio, for one that currently works under Gingerbread into this rom without messing anything up?
If so, how will I go about it and what things do I need to get? Please keep in mind that I already flashed back to stock and I am very comfortable with flashing now, but I don't know much about what goes inside the ROM itself.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Manny
Let me jump in before Jack shreds you for ignorance. The radio IS NOT part of your ROM and has nothing to do with your wifi, gps, the space station or anything other than cell reception (as much as software can). Changing it can be beneficial, but is also dangerous. A failed install means a permanently broken phone. Explain what you mean about not getting 4G.

Appreciate you saving my skin there. Sorry for my ignorance.
What I meam by no 4g speed is, my signal bar on the top right of the phone, almost always reads 4g and get fast browsing speeds on my phone. I can tether my internet to my laptop and it runs great on my stock Ginger.
The moment I go to custom ROM, I can only get 3g and is not just display issues, because the speed is slow based on speedtest.net.
Makes sense now?

Hmm, well, I'm not aware of speed issues on ICS, at least not anymore. However, if you're having issues with it you might try a Gingerbread ROM like Android Revolution HD or Insert Coin.
If you plan on sticking with ICS, you might try the "3G Hacks" in Pimp my ROM. 3G and 4G run off the exact same radio, but a value or two in the ROM may, I repeat MAY, affect the speed. What kind of speed differences are you seeing? Are you comparing these at a similar time of day?
Also, holy crap. You said CFW. I haven't seen that term since my old PSP hacking days. Good times.
Sent from my myTouch 4g using xda app-developers app
I am comparing at relatively the same timed, days and locations. Office versus home, etc.
I will flash againg ICS and test your recommendations. Thanks for your help.
Compare 10 runs back-to-back, same time, same day, same place. That would be a good basis to discuss something.
For all the rest: no ICS ROM will work properly for you. If you want stability - drop to Gingerbread.
About the radio - estallings15 already answered you. You're looking in the wrong places.
"4G" mark on the signal bar means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on this phone. 4G means something where "4G" stands for "LTE", which is a different set of bands and different transceivers. This phone doesn't have LTE, nor does T-Mobile AFAIK. So it's just an icon. But - make sure you have "H" showing instead on custom ROMs (HSDPA mode). It should show up when the phone starts actively using data.
This makes perfect sense. I really appreciate your prompt response and suggestions.
Back to flashing.

I suspect it's the radio. I keep getting crappy signal apparently with the Panache stock recently. It's taken to a new level now with no service out in the middle of the street. Is there anything I can do than try to switch radios? Even right now, I keep getting switched from 3G to HSPA+.

Radio controls all network communication. Just be careful when changing it. Make sure you verify the md5.

Radio Issue
I have a MT4G running 4.2.2 on LiquidSmooth and I cant get anything over 3g even in areas where I previously had awesome 4g service (on stock 2.3.4). I checked my md5 and it does not match any other radio/baseband's md5. I'd really like my 4g back but I also don't want to brick my phone. Currently my md5 is showing up as 60de66c8b88d27b9a3bbae385b7f71dc and have yet to find one anywhere to match it. I am fairly new to rooting androids ( I had an iPhone for like 5 years and I just got fed up with the limitations even when it was jailbroken) I read a forum about extracting the radio.img from a stock rom but I was still iffy about the md5 not matching. Absolutely any advice would be great. Thanks in advance (and apologies in advance if I somehow posted this in the wrong place or something)

:sigh:
"4G" and 3G use the same hardware. None, I repeat, NONE of the available radios break "4G." What you're seeing is a difference in the icons used. Whereas the stock GB ROM simply shows "4G" when using HSPA+, the AOSP variants show 3G when idle and switch to H/H+ when data is being used. There is nothing you need to change. It's a gimmick that often evokes a placebo effect.

Thanks for the quick reply and thank you again for clarifying that. But when I ran speed test my download speed is showing around 350kb/s when I usually get around 1.5 mb/s. I recently asked my friends in the area that also have t mobile and they said they've experienced a decent loss in speed/signal just in the past month or so. So is it possible that another baseband might increase my signal strength at least? Because if it's not possible/effective than I feel like I'd be wasting time trying to fix my md5 issue.

If you're worried about the radio, download a different one, verify the md5 ON THAT DOWNLOAD and flash it. Feel free to report the speed difference, if there is one.
Hey you all! I've been looking at threads in the last couple of days but I cannot find and answer to my question. I'm sure someone here has addressed it but I need a little help. I have a MyTough 4G and I have used at least 5 different ROMs with it but since I nuked my stock ROM, I haven't connected at 4G in the T-Mo network. What am I missing?

Does your signal bar say H? If so, you have 4G.
Did you checked apn settings!?
Most of the ROMs I've used do not say 4G. Like estallings15 said, if it says H, that means you're on 4G.
Well I can say I used to have a similar problem unless I was on a version of cm. Not sure if this fixed it but I went back to stock unrooted for unrelated reasons and then ended up rooting again and have noticed that I haven't seen the problem arise again.
But the ROMs do stay on 3g until the "4g" speeds are needed
