Before I purchased this phone, naturally I read and watched some video reviews. Many said that the phone felt cheap and plasticy. I thought to hell with that, I'm going to purchase it anyways because I want the pure Google experience. Always after a few days with the phone I must whole heartedly disagree with those people. Yes, the back and bezel trim are plastic but that's good because this phone is awesomely light. I think the fit and finish of this phone exude quality. Aesthetically this phone is beautiful and impressive. I'm so happy I bought it. Just wanted to exclaim my delight.

Congrats on your ns4g. IMO Im fine with plastic phones. When they are dropped on the floor they are light enough not to cause major damage unlike other heavier phones made with metal accents. My Motorola i335 is made out of plastic/rubber and doesn't feel premium at all but boy that phone can take a beating.

I got a zagg and the black sprint gel case and I feel it's pretty well protected. I also am VERY careful with this expensive toy and never abuse it. It's never been dropped since release day and I plan on keeping it that way. A front pants pocket with nothing in it but the phone and the screen facing my leg is the way I carry it around. I had the black life raft triple layer case for it but it was just too much of a pain to touch the edges of the screen without the edges of the case interfering.
Sorry for the two post but tapatalk was being a pita. The phone feels solid yet light. I don't twist or flex the phone to see if it creaks. I'm too paranoid and careful to try that with it. It's too expensive to be screwing around like that just for kicks.
It doesn't creak or anything. Very solid construction. Better than the Evo 4G if you ask me. Speakers found better too and lag its much better as well. light is good imo, not like the epic. That thing felt cheap.

It feels good to me, and like MrDrumngun said, better than the HTC Evo.
Now, I don't think it is as good as the HTC Desire or HTC Sensation, I would still prefer that over the plastic.
But also, the actual QUALITY CONTROL sucks. I'm on my second, going on third, Nexus S 4G.
On the first, the WiFi and my Profile/PRL updates stopped working.
On my second phone, I had an image burned into the screen somehow. They replaced the screen, and now my back button sometimes gets stuck.
Mr Drum, how.is your battery life? I have the Sprint Nexus too, and my EVO gets 3d better battery life. That is why I switched back to the EVO for now. EVO gets more than 24 hrs on a charge. Nexus gets maybe 6-8 hrs.

Mine lasts me more than 24 hrs. More so if I disable 4g.
I just switched to Sprint and I am not sure if it is my phone or service - on several occasions it won't register an incoming call, and I will get a VM notification.

ok. Seems fine to me.
I have the same problem. At first I thought it was Google voice integration that was causing it. But I disabled it and still have problems with missed calls.

This post just made me spit water all over my monitor/keyboard.
I came from the Sprint HTC Evo 4G. I find battery life on the Nexus S to be FAR superior.
On the Evo, I took phone off charger in morning, and could barely make it home from work. Sometimes I had to plug it in while at work.
On the Nexus, I take phone off charger in morning, and work all day, come home, hang out, go to sleep, and my battery will still have enough juice left to get me about half-way through another day.
EDIT: i should clarify, I went from the CDMA Sprint HTC Evo 4G to the GSM T-Mobile Nexus S. GSM uses less power than CDMA, and around here, T-Mobile has better coverage than Sprint. Those factors could certainly be just as significant as phone hardware.

I find the battery life on my Nexus to be far superior to the EVO except for when my Evo was running CM7 with a Savaged Zen SBC kernel. I like this phone so much better.
Completely agree. Thought I would dislike the construction, but think it's ultimately more solid than my Evo. The Evo's back was held in mostly by friction and it always stuck out very slightly and squeaked when held firmly. This is solid and light and just all around awesome.
The battery life is not up to Evo standards, though. Simple truth in my experience. The display just eats a much higher percentage of battery than my Evo ever did, and going a whole day without charging or swapping is impossible. The external speaker is also highly inferior to the Evo's. The Evo has an outstanding speaker with great volume and clarity. The one on the NS4G is middling at best.

I get worse battery life on the Nexus than I ever did on the Evo, and the culprit appears to be the screen.
In general, Samoled uses less power than LCD. Fwiw.

WiFi antenna is at the bottom of the phone. Put your hand behind the bottom of your phone and aim it at your router. Note low signal strength. Remove hand. Note jump in strength. Ponder the penetration abilities of a 2.4 GHz signal. Repeat, rise.
If you cover the top half it'll lower the call signal/reception.

Every single phone is like this, which is why the Iphone thing was blown way out of proportion. Whenever you hold any cell phone in a certain position, it loses signal.

No. This is not a problem at all. The iPhone issue was that 2 antennas could be physically bridged. The CDMA antenna is appropriately at the top iirc. The other needs to go somewhere...

I don't know if it was blown that out of proportion. I mean that was the typical way people hold their phones. It wasn't like they grasp the phone with two hands or something. Face it Apple made a mistake there I said it. GOD FORBID..

No, he's right. If it weren't true, you could get a signal in a underground bomb shelter.
Edit: Meaning that if you block the antenna in the phone well enough (even with your hand), you'll experience some signal drop.

FWIW, I could drop the signal by 1 bar on my iPhone 4 but it doesn't make a noticeable difference.
I took this video of my shift from my original evo. If its not as bad as the iPhone its still troubling.
What do you all think?
I tried replicating your results and haven't been able to. My signal doesn't seem to change at all regardless of how I hold the phone.

Mine does the exact same thing. It is pretty annoying. Probably my biggest complaint about the Shift so far.
Mine did the same as well. PArt of why I returned it
does the same thing for me as well.
There is another thread further down in general that talks about low signal issues and the antenna being in the bottom of the phone.
I figured this issue might be related to just my home but it happens every where. I am hopeful its a defective antenna otherwise I'm considering returning and going back to my Evo.

Same thing happens with wifi. Maybe get a holster and Bluetooth headset? I know. I have an idea for an invention. A hat that has a holster on top for your phone. No more body blocking signals!
Another thing kinda related, the old phones with the telescopic antennas usually always outperformed phones with stub or internal antennas. I say bring back the telescopic antennas and get more bars!
I was able to replicate this quite easily on the wifes shift...however I am left handed so it doesn't effect me as much when held in my left hand...this may be a huge factor in deciding which phone I get w/ my upgrade on the 1st though

Mine will do this, but I have a very poor connection in my house. It's always on the verge of going into roaming/not having service. So it doesn't take much to lose signal strength.

The reception in my bathroom is so $hitty I have to use wifi.
Anyone know if there are any that are actually worth it and don't begin degrading?
I've read a lot of reviews saying that most of them work for 1-2 weeks and then start to lose strength.
I'm looking for a reliable brand.
I have had my HTC Evo 4G 1800 mah batteries since the G2 came out. No degradation, minor label modification. Battery door fits fine.
I also have one, but I don't use it every day, just couple of times when going on a trip or traveling. I can easily tell it hold a lot more juice than original and the battery door is well made and has this soft touch, not a cheap plastic.
Also lately I began using external battery charger, the black one that plugs directly into the phone, no cables. I simply always have one in my bag.
the chichitec ones have been working good for me stock rom rooted. I'm getting about 18-20 hours or so depending on usage. The fastest I've been able to kill it is probably 7-9 hours of constant use with everything on, but that was intentional to see how fast i could kill it lol. Cost me like 18 buck on amazon, removed label clipped the ends and voila cover fits perfectly just tape on battery above microsd card holder so it wont short out.

What do you mean clip the ends and tap on battery above microsd holder? Does it not fit OTB? Can you use the original battery covery with it?
There is this tiny clip you snip for the g2 (the battery is meant for another htc model but it fits) and remove the plastic vinyl cover, after that it just fits with the stock cover. The problem is you need to make sure the bare metal battery does not ground out with the sd card holder. a simple piece of tape works well. Search chichitec on here and there are several threads and how to's.

just got it about an hour ago actually, wont fit not without sanding it down, and to be honest it doesnt look very well fabricated after the sticker is off it. also since i read the post above on how its not really much better than the 4g stock battery im not gonna bother sanding it to make it fit. i have a 1650mah battery on its way as well which says its for the desire z, so it should fit perfectly, but ill let you guys know if it does in fact last longer than the stocker.
so to sum things up, the evo 4g slim 2000mah wont fit without quite a bit of modification, its close...very close, but still requires sanding. if in fact it had amazing reviews i would mod it but ill just cut my losses and toss it.
update on the 1650mah dz battery to follow as soon as i recieve it. battery performance a few days following that.

Well I pick up my Epic a week ago and wanted to just write my opinion on it. So far this is the most amazing phone I've owned. I came from the EVO and I can't believe how much better this is.
The screen while smaller is so much more crisp and vivid. The SAMOLED screen really makes a difference and the 0.3in smaller screen really is no biggie. It is also every bit as responsive.
The device itself is every bit as responsive in every way as well. Processor speeds are both 1ghz but I think I may actually run faster on my epic.
Overall I could not be happier with the device, I only wish I would have got it when it launched instead of the EVO....better late than never though.
Anyone considering this phone should jump at the chance. I give it a 10 out of 10, and with only paying $75 for mine, there is no reason not to grab one up.

Cool, HTC's are so hacker/developer unfriendly, with Samsung you basically flash one thing and you are done. With HTC, you have to do all kinds of BS.
I've actually noticed that. With the EVO I was always flashing something, with this all I have needed to do was flash one CM10 nightly and have been good to go.
Though I think I might look into overclocking at some point just because I like things to go faster than necessary, lol.
Only thing I can gripe about so far though is how hard it was to get odin to recognize the phone. Took 3 usb cables, 2 computers, and a total of 6 different usb ports.

This post takes me back to November 2010... ahhhh, good times!
I love my epic I have had a G2, mt3gs, HD2, and NS4g. Overall the epic has outmatched them all other than the data on the NS4G. I can't live without my physical keyboard it is so much more intuitive than a fake and slow virtual one. I think the "unbrickable" aspect of this device is nuts! With the ability to Odin back to stock or fix your radio is imperative on any device. Not to mention our phone has gone from 2.2, 2.3, 4.0.4 and now 4.1.1! What other phone has had the life of that!??! Who could also forget the plethora of roms that have existed and are yet to come! Our devs and the folks at samsung have outdone themselves!!! Great to have a phone and community that is truly epic!!!!!

@zac - the Epic is slightly more amazing than you realized - we started with android 2.1
Come to think of it, flash capability was the big deal with the 2.2 upgrade, which means that the Epic is one of the few phones that have seen both the birth and death of flash on android during it's life cycle of active development

I have an EVO 3d, which was my kids' before he went and lost the privilege of having a phone.... rooting it sucked. I used it for a couple of weeks before I reactivated my epic. Now I'm thinking of going back to it.... I finally shattered my screen. Practically threw it at the driveway (it was dropping, I tried to grab it and smacked it into the driveway). Corner is shattered, by the search button. Still works, but the glass is starting to come out. Don't have the money for a deductible.... The EVO3d is not a *bad* phone, I just like the way Sammy makes their phones better than the HTC.

I have also noticed that Samsung appears to make a better device. I have accidentally sent this phone flying once (dog got caught on the USB cable) and it did nothing to the phone, had my EVO 3D drop from about hip height once and it knocked one (the bottom) camera out of alignment rendering the 3D camera worthless.
Overall I am just kicking myself for not trying out other brands of smartphones before I jumped into being an HTC fanboy, lol.
Had mine for about 2 weeks now, got a great deal on it traded a Samsung intercept. Though the screen has a crack on top left corner but don't hurt it none. Came from a Motorola triumph and this phone is way better, only thing triumph had was I could over clock it to 1.7 and ran smooth. But doesn't compare to having a cm10 I can use as a daily driver. Great devs on this phone

Wow that's exactly where my phone is shattered...I've also noticed the crack that's extended onto the screen gets bigger by the week...maybe the glass around the search is the weakest spot lol my phone dropped from a counter while I was in the shower and landed face first and it only shattered on the search lol

I feel the same way. While I wouldn't say I'm a Sammy fanboy, I do look at theirs first. Had the Moment, loved it. Now the Epic. I looked at the EVO, although not very hard. When the GS3 came out, I couldn't wait for my upgrade to come through. Fortunately I've got until February, so I can't rush into a new phone. Now I'm taking time looking at all the phones, and hopefully will make a good choice.... Guess we'll see though. But I'm pretty sure I'll end up with the GS3.

A tiny piece of my glass finally broke off a couple days ago...REAL tiny but nonetheless its gone lol. I've had this same epic since it came out. Sprint won't fix the glass. I have to pay the deductible for a whole new phone just to fix a screen. Tep used to be great where you just walk in, wait an hour and walk out with a fresh screen

For broken screens you can just hop on eBay and for somewhere in the area of $40 you can get a new screen and sometimes a whole new phone.
Samsung Epic - Tapatalk 2
Has anyone here noticed the capacitative buttons aren't as responsive as they used to be after 2+ years? Maybe it's my skinomi protector.. I have two epic 4gs. One for my daily driver and one for messing around. They both have skins on them, but one seems much more responsive on the button presses than the other. Especially the menu button.
So I made a mistake by exchanging my first one for a s4 what a bust that was that phone was full of lag no matter how much stuff I disabled and turned off and then I did I dug myself a bigger hole by exchanging for an iPhone 5 that was an even bigger mistake I don't even want to go there why that i**** was driving me crazy but I'm happy to be back here what a relief

Why exchange the one in the first place?
Why did you exchange it the first time?

Some must take that journey of learning to realise that what what one had is better than what one must have but the grass is never greener on the other side

I'm actually thinking about returning my htc one. For the fact that it gets too hot in the hand, and the power button and vol buttons are a bit akward for daily use. did you get the heating issue as well?

Im sorry that you had a bad device experience with the S4. But I have to tell you, the S4 is far and away from laggy at all. Even in stock form. Several people that I know and many more on this site would tell you differently. I am going to say that either an app that you use caused the lagg, or the phone was a lemon. Heck, I have my S4 packed to the gills with apps and it is under clocked as well. And I get zero lagg.
Now, as far as the iPhone is concerned, I do not blame you in the least for getting rid of it. The company that I work for gave me an iPhone. After using it for a couple of months. I practically ready to smash it. So, I convinced them to purchase me an S4. For now and as far as a phone is concerned, I could not be happier.
Regardles the One seems as though it is a good phone. There are two things stopping me from owning it. This one is a big one. It is not on the Verizon network. And two, it does not have a micro SD card slot.

Not sure what awkward would mean, but the one heats just as any phone does, but the aluminum traps it and absorbs it more than say, plastic. That's not to say the phone itself is overheating, meaning for ex, u have a naturally 1.1ghz phone overclocked to 1.8ghz, that heat you're feeling is it screaming for it's life.
The heat on the one is just due to the fact it's aluminum, nothibg to panic about, I PROMISE YOU.
Why don't you get a case? Because you won't be able to feel it and well, as beautiful as it is, and as the case for all smartphones, drop it and it's gone.

The One feels hotter because the aluminum body conducts heat much better than plastic does. This is a GOOD thing. It means the phone cools off much faster when things get hot.
The power button is awkward to push but nothing that make me thing of using some crappy iPhone or the S4

Also any quad core phone will get hot
This is seriously the best phone on the market but yea I should have never left, I have unlimited data on my T-Mobile line but apple wouldnt let me use it the way I want so the iPhone had to go

Oh yea so the gaming is pretty wack on ios if u have a 5 don't let the large library fool u, the majority of the games don't even fill the screen and havnt seen an update for years so that's a joke

+1 Was in the very same boat..:fingers-crossed:
I think I'm the only one that likes the power button on the top of the phone. I think power buttons on the side of the phone just don't belong. Looks stupid to me. I'd rather re-adjust the phone in my hand to lock it then have it on the side.
