Baking custom roms - Acer Iconia A500

Hi all
We are looking at using the a500 as an ebook repository for students
Can anyone point me to information on cooking custom roms for it?
Basicly I want to strip out all the software except the needed ebook software

Just an opinion, but the A500 is a rather capable and expensive device to be limiting it to just running an eBook app. There are quite a few dedicated eBook devices at 1/4th the price (or less) of an A500 that are relatively limited to being a single purpose eReader right out of the box.
An excellent example is an original Nook or Nook Simple. You can still root it, and easily remove any extra features, the battery life is almost exponentially longer, and it's much lighter weight.

Baking a custom ROM can be quite difficult if you're a novice.
PM me your specs and I'll see what I can cook up.

Coby Kyros 1024 (10") also fits the requirement.

The problem with the kindle is its not color, this wouldn't be a problem if the books where designed for gray displays

Very valid points/requirements. Sounds like you're looking at the right device for all the right reasons.
Sorry, not much help in mass-cooking a ROM -- I'm more an individual machine tweaking type of guy. But do keep us at least generally updated on your endeavor. It would be great to know that the A500 (or any Android tablet) was successfully implemented in such a project.

[Q] Full version android?

I read that Fire will have a stripped/modified version of android. Would the devs eventually be able to load the full version of android on to fire? Right now I'm paranoid by the possibility of having limited usage due to the modified version of android.
Its got the Amazon interface, but it will be running over 2.3
Plus, amazon has said they will not stand in the way of rooting the device, so its very likely that within a month or so some ROMS will be out for it.
Speculators say that the specs have potential for Android 3.0
512MB of RAM = kinda sucks.
Same as in ipad 2
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed

Completely different OS with a significantly different style of memory management. Apples and oranges.
Yeah but 512MB certainly isn't lacking, especially considering it's a device that's under $200. It would've been hard to put in any more and keep it at that price point. Also ICS is supposed to be pretty memory efficient.
Once its able to be rooted and loaded with custom roms I'm buying three. One for me and one for each of my kids. IM getting an Htc Flyer for the wifey.

A little caution here might be in order. The android devs are a wickedly creative crew BUT...until the AF is rooted (consistently) I would NOT presume it can or even will be!
Note how the Transformers were rootable up to the later B70 models. Then after that....nada so far. It's all about the SDK, bootloader, etc.
Wait and see if the AF can be rooted is all I say.
EDIT: Disregard.

No its a heavily modiefied 2.3 android. And putting full android ob there will break the cloud storage one has, and 6gb is not enough to have all the apps you want.

You are welcome to head up a project, but I'd bet my first born that none of the regular devs are going to be interested in doing it.
And your sarcasm is duly noted......
As patruns has said, the two devices use different processors, have different partitioning setups, and different memory configurations. As the nook tablet is only $250.00 (the original price of the nook color), I would say that if you wanted the functions of the nook tab, buy a nook tab.
While it might be possible to port it, there is no need.

Worth trade my LG Optimus 3D P920 for a Moto Atrix 4G?

Well, this is it.
Is it worth trade? I was thinking about use the webtop and try to buy a vehicle dock and lapdock for a better use of the phone... But seeing on another way I have an ipad 3 and its better than the docks for Atrix, I can just plug my iPad via hdmi on my TV and I get a better "webtop".
But I still getting it on my head, is it really worth? Maybe is just excitement now with the docks that Atrix have.
Sorry my bad english btw.

Looks like Optimus 3D will get official ICS...
So you think better keep my LG? Because it have the hdmi function as well, only not the webtop, but I really dont think it is that better when compare with my Ipad 3.
Hmm...not so sure. One thing that its actually better on the Atrix is the development support. Last time i checked when i was looking to root and update my friend's O3D, the development was kind of dead at the moment. Not so sure how it is now, but it usually slows down with time, so my guess its that it must be kind of dead right now. Atrix's development is not the best one, but its great. And the community here is great. If you are OK with not receiving official ICS, i would do the trade.
I would look for something better though. Maybe a Galaxy Nexus if you can find a deal for it.

The thing is that O3D community is kind waiting the ICS uptade... But I dont know, Im really confused about trade it.
Cause the O3D can not get the ICS and stuck on 2.3 forever, thats my fear, on the other hand In Atrix I would get enough custom roms as I can.
Any additional info would be appreciate!

If I look at my Atrix here, I wouldn't choose it again. Honestly, I love the fingerprint scanner - and due to that + the chipset we're pretty stuck on gingerbread. A ton of apps do require ICS and JB and we're pretty stuck; Don't want to sound desperate or pessimistic, but even my P1 runs on JB by now - so I wouldn't swap if I were you.

LG Optimus 3D won't gonna get any ICS it appears... And the Atrix can use JB from custom roms right? So it won't be stuck forever.
If it was me I'd do the trade but I think you should look at other phones too maybe ones with ICS and JB support. But you should also look how active the development is. Luckily us atrix users have great developers

I don't have any other options, and for me... I use my phone to SMS, calls and a little bit web search, but I use alot the HDMI feature to see some movies on my girlfriend's house, so webtop would be cool too.
If I can upgrade, even from custom roms to JB or ICS Im going to be happy anyway, I dont need a powerful smartphone, only one which dont freezes and lags when im texting or awnsering an call like my old Moto Milestone (hate it).
Atrix can do all of them things perfectly and webtop on ICS is looking promising. Or you can use tablet ui which is quite good. If you have no other choice I'd recommend the atrix I'm running epinters latest CM10 build, the battery is great and it is a great daily driver would highly recommend that.

It is just not funny to have more workarounds than features due to nvidia and Motorola
And also the lapdock is so useful, I can even plug my PC on it and use.
Atrix is really a good deal, Im going to make it if my friend still wants.

Lies. The ICS leak has semi-good drivers and FP support.
I also think that the Atrix is a better phone. Only issue with it is that the Atrix tends to damage the digitizer by itself. It happens suddenly. One day you are using your phone normally, 100% ok, and the next one you have a dead strip on your digitizer with no response at all. Look that issue up before you make the trade.

Firefox OS for Kindle Fire

Is there by any chance we will get to ever see the Firefox OS on the kindle fire? Firefox OS will be released on Mid-2013 and is there by any chance will a developer will work on this OS? It would Bree awesome if we get this ported to the kindle fire, after all it is made to run on ARM processors.

And it doesn't need nearly as much power of Ubuntu. It can function on a lot less, it's made for new low end devices.
That would be very cool to see run on the kindle. Would make me thing about getting one for my self

Don't be so sure about that. It has recently been discovered that Ubuntu uses CM10 as it's base for Android devices. Hashcode's kernel has made this device much faster and much more capable than it was ever intended to be so it's not too hard to imagine, after the bugs are ironed out for the official full release, that it could be ported to the Kindle Fire rather easily and without too much of a drop in performance.

Another t thing is of this is a OS for Low-End Devices(-$200), then could this have some Enhancements, I mean the Kindle Fire came from a OS(v.2.3) that was for Low-End devices, so maybe it will run smoothly.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda app-developers app
Firefox OS is being primarily developed for under developed countries and so for low end devices in mind (so I read). If this is true, I would imagine that it would be screaming fast on a Kindle Fire.
Wouldn't mind playing with it if someone could figure out how to make a ROM for it.
I'm up to see it on the Kindle also. I don't particularly care for the concept of web based apps but if they make stand alone HTML5 software w/o a data connection required, that'd be sweet.

Getting back on topic...
Firefox OS is currently being ported to the Kindle Fire HD7 and from the looks of it, we'll start seeing alpha releases within the next week or so. I'm not sure if there are any plans to bring it to the KF1, but I imagine it wouldn't be that hard to make it happen.

Well, one step at a time. First get it to work, then dual boot is the next step.
Finally, it might be possible to run them "together", for example running CM apps in Ubuntu Touch.
I mean by transforming the base Android system into a fully-fledged CM and connect it up to Ubuntu.
Not sure that is feasible yet, but there might be a chance. And it is sure a while down the road.

Really disappointed that it's only a "skin" on top of CM10.1, proper ubuntu is what we need, to actually run linux apps but still, every advancement is positive but I'm not interested in another android port, I like jelly bean as it is, AOSP ftw.

It's not running on top of CM10.1 is running on top of the CM10.1 kernel (and some drivers for the hardware) and I wouldn't say it's fair to call that a "skin". That's like calling every linux distro a linux skin.
true, my frasing is wrong but it doesn't change the fact that it's not capable of running linux apps, it's just another take on android, and on a tablet such as this I'd love to be able to dual-boot into android/linux, let's see where archlinux will take us but with the way things are changing and people upgrading to newer devices this will be left behind as well eventually, and to think that since the first quad core device a year ago today we call the tegra 3 a low-powered chipset compared to the powerhouses coming out, and people still don't have a quad core cpu at their home pcs and laptops, anyway, offtopic, let's see...
as far as I heard from many different people now it is just something to show the skin as main features like wallpaper, rotation and others aren't working yet although they should... Basically I would prefer a dualboot solution with stock ubuntu and android, but just my personal opinion...
