Windows/DOS Games - Eee Pad Transformer General

While I saw nothing like this posted here in the Transformer threads yet, I figured I'd make a thread to atleast start discussion as well as provide help with others that might be interested in this.
[aDosBox]
Currently I have managed to get aDosBox installed and working fairly well, to the point where Fallout (a game I personally wanted to play) is working decently well enough that I am happy.
A few things that I had to search around for to find answer to.
Mounting:
In aDosBox, in order to have a large enough space to full install Fallout, you need to use the following line:
mount d /Removable/SD -freesize 1024
This will provide you with 1 gb of free space (assuming you have 1 gb free) on the drive. I found I had to do this in order for the Fallout installer to allow me to do the full install.
Another thing to note is the number of cycles/second setting in aDosBox. I changed mine to roughly 16,000 and that seemed to give me good performance. Much higher than that (I think 21,000 is where I really noticed it) and aDosBox is trying to do too many cycles/sec and it actually slows things down.
Another problem I have had, is getting the mouse to actually properly follow my hardware mouse (I have the dock) as well as the touchscreen when using aDosBox. Calibrating the mouse doesn't really seem to have much of a good effect for getting this working properly yet either.
[Windows]
So far my attempts at installing Windows 98 (so I can then use Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics) have been pretty bad. I have not been able to get Windows 98 to install, I get stuck where it starts checking hardware. I let it sit for about half an hour, but that pretty much killed it.
I'll be trying out Windows 95C here in a bit.
After searching a bit, I found this little bit of information...
the /NA# switch, when used at the setup command line (ie setup /NA#) will skip the searching/checking hardware portion according to the number.
This switch bypasses the program check and can use the following values:
#=0 Default.
#=1 No Windows-based program check, but MS-DOS-based program are blocked.
#=2 No MS-DOS-based program check, Windows-based programs are blocked.
#=3 No Windows-based or MS-DOS-based program check.
After installing Windows 95, I got an error asking for MSDOS 7.0. Haven't figured out that problem yet.
Anyone else have any other experiences?

Download GemRB to play Infinity Engine games. Download ScummV to play... a bunch of other games. I wouldn't put much hope in it otherwise.

Well, Fallout isn't an IE game, so GemRB won't play it.
As for Scumm, I don't really care to play those games right now.

Full Throttle on my SGS was pretty awesome using ScummVM, I'm probably going to try it later on TF as well. Other classic games like Kyrandia etc do look funny in 2011 though (nostalgie eh...)

Wanted - help beta testing my browser game

Hello fellow XDAers!
I have ported a WinMobile game to Silverlight and I am really desperate for some beta testers – having been immersed in the project now for over 500 hours it's getting hard to see the wood for the trees.
If you're keen, the URL is www.squarepeggame.com
As an (attempt at an) incentive, I will reward useful beta testers with free copies of the game when it's released. Currently, things I would really like to know are:
- Does it load and run on your machine / browser?
- Are you able to create an account, and is your level position saved when you re-start?
- The Level Designer (this'll be the first time anybody has used it, go easy on me) what do you think?
- Comments on useability and interface.
- General bug reports (please be as specific as possible)
- Anyone have access to an Intel-based Mac? Does it run on that?
There are separate forums on the game site to post any questions/bugs, I am of course happy to reply here in this thread too, providing it doesn't get too cluttered.
Thank you in advance!
Carlos
PS: I'll soon be on the look out for paid level designers as well, if this is something that interests you, just sign up in-game as a developer (see the website for more info)
PPS: You might need Silverlight 2, but it only takes 30secs to download & install the plugin
- Does it load and run on your machine / browser?
Yes
- Are you able to create an account,
haven't tried (was not required
and is your level position saved when you re-start?
When I clicked the x i restarted, but when I clicked the x again the screen stayed white, nothing happened
- Comments on useability and interface.
I though the pregame pointers (in training mode) disapeared a bit too quickly
- General bug reports (please be as specific as possible)

Hi there
Thanks very much for this, I'm nearly ready to release it - anybody else fancy giving it a go? http://www.squarepeggame.com
What would be very helpful would be if somebody wanted to use the level designer to make their own level for the game - doesn't have to be anything complex - and let me know how you get on?
C
I will try right now
hmm seems like ppc has a new level to achieve ... will try
quite heavy on my memory eats up a lot of ram; was nice to play it and as been said was able to play without using my email address
Frickin' level 7....AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! Now you have done it. I'll be at this for hours.http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Runs well on Firefox 3 with Silverlight 2 for me. It allowed me to create an account and login. Haven't tested saving yet. Will do in a moment. Likewise with the level designer. The only thing that could do with altering is that on my 1920 x 1200 monitor (24 inch) the game is as far to the left of the browser as it will go. Would be better in the middle.
Yes, it did save my level when I went back. Just had the signup email. Might be worth obscuring some of the password in it . And volume controls for SFX and music would be good rather than just on or off. Level 9 of the tutorial has a spelling error, Giong instead of Going.
- Does it load and run on your machine / browser?
It runs, I am using my bro's core2duo laptop with firefox 3.0.5
- Are you able to create an account, and is your level position saved when you re-start?
Yes, I used red_hanks also and it says I am logged in with that name. Still waiting for the game to start for 15minutes now, it says "please wait" with a square spinning around. It is not my internet connection because I have a high-speed broadband. Silverlight was installed also and system is up to date with Windows Update.
- The Level Designer (this'll be the first time anybody has used it, go easy on me) what do you think?
Looks clean, like in nurserys... (just the first page where it says START, INSTRUCTIONS...)
- Comments on useability and interface.
None at the moment
- General bug reports (please be as specific as possible)
It is not loading???
Oh it's loading now...Playing it...nice game...hit thr back arrow button and it went back to the first page...playing again...hit the x button and nothin happens..hit it again and everything just went white...
Hmmm... the level editor crashes Firefox for me as soon as I click in the email box. Also happens in IEtab and Internet Explorer 7. My machine is Vista Ultimate with a Core 2 Duo E6600 with 2gb RAM. I've also had it go to a blank screen in the menus but I see this is a listed bug on your forum.

Thanks, I'll look into any ways of further minimising RAM usage, although could be a browser thing too. Lots of sounds and pics to cache too, but will definitely investigate.

Level 7, really??! The one on the tutorial is really easy, so maybe you're talking about the actual "first hundred" playlist? Hope you cracked it! Let me know if you can't get there and want me to developer-enable your account so that you can try out the level designer.

This is an interesting comment - I will try to get it to centre in the browser rather than left-aligning. It's funny as I had just assumed that people would move or resize the window rather than maximising it! But I want it to be as helpful as possible to the user so you're right, it should align to the middle of large browser windows.

These are all excellent suggestions, thank you - and typo now fixed. (the joy of all the levels coming from a SQL server is that this was a relatively trivial thing to do - if you've ever tried deploying and staging an Azure server site you'll know how long it can take...)
The volume controls might not make it into the beta release but will definitely be added later.

Thanks for this, red_hanks. Can't replicate the error but could easily have been the webserver being down. Calls to WCF services from Silverlight are a little tricky and I think I need more error handling for when they don't work. I don't think you have tested the level designer by the way, just the game, in answer to your comment.
Thanks everyone! As I said before, if anyone fancies trying to design their own level using the level designer and wants to let me know the name, etc, I'd be interested to (1) play your level and (2) hear how you got on with the level designer!
There's forums over at www.squarepeggame.com too if you need help, tutorials still being made but some are there.

Any idea what could cause the level editor to crash in IE7 and Firefox? I've tried Run As Administrator as well but still the same. As soon as I click any of the boxes (including the tickbox) it crashes.

Hmm okay it would certainly be good to get this solved!
When it crashes, does it just white-screen or is there an error message? Can you try (in Firefox), after it's crashed, going to Tools -> Error Console and seeing if there were any error messages?
C
PS: I'm assuming you're running Silverlight v2 and not some earlier beta or something. Perhaps you could try uninstalling and re-installing Silverlight for me as well, making sure of course that all browsers are closed during installation.
Great, but a few issues
It runs along fine with very few issues on my Sony Laptop (Model VGN-CR240E with Windows Vista/7 partitions, 2 gb RAM, 2 gigahertz Centrino Duo, and a 1280x800 LCD screen. I have not actually tried it on Vista, only on Windows 7 and it works wonderfully except when you enter a level and hit the "X" button in the top corner, which crashes IE8 Beta It doesn't crash under those circumstances on FireFox (Windows 7) though. However, these issues could also be attributed to the fact it is a beta OS running a beta Browser. The game seems more stable on FireFox. I will try it on Vista later, and see if that makes a difference using IE7. As for the UI, it's fine but if you added a way to go back to the main menu after you choose the green "Start" button, that would make it even better. Accounts work fine as far as I've used them. And I have not noticed any RAM issues with the game, according to Process Explorer. The game is amazing overall, and you'll have yourself a real winner when this is done. Good luck with the game
Dave
Does it load and run on your machine / browser?
It works fine on my HP laptop. I'm running Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 and using IE 8 Beta 2
Are you able to create an account, and is your level position saved when you re-start?
Yes. I created an account and the level position was saved
The Level Designer (this'll be the first time anybody has used it, go easy on me) what do you think?
I haven't been able to login to it.
Comments on useability and interface.
Nice UI. It's simple and intuitive
General bug reports (please be as specific as possible)
Problem logging into the level designer. It says I need to complete the tutorial though I've finished it.
How did it run on an Intel iMac?
Once I get to my newspaper class 2 days from now, I'll update my post.
Since I couldn't login to the dev portal, I'm just saying: I'm a Silverlight developer and I would be interested in designing levels/improving the code of the game.
Hello,
The game runs well on my Mac Book Pro with Firefox.
I was able to create an account with no issues.
UI is simple. Makes the games easy to learn.
Crashed to a white screen on level 9 of the tutorial after several moves. Was able to restart from the beginning. This was prior to creating a login. After creating a login and then finishing level 8 of the tutorial I got a pleas wait icon. It then crashed to a white screen after about 30 seconds.
Do you want us to post in the squarepeg forum instead of here?

When it crashes it actually kills Firefox and I get the Mozilla Crash Reporter asking if I wish to report details of what I was doing. I've tried several times looking in the Error Console and there's nothing other than a couple of dead RSS feeds. If I clear it still nothing at all related. I have V2 of Silverlight installed but have just tried rebooting, removing it, rebooting again, re-installing it and still the same.
Had to d/l silverlight- plays just fine
Created account and didnt have to log in as it remembered me and where I was
Nice game, looks good and is easy to use, though the levels get tough
No bugs that I have found
Using this on my HP 17" laptop running Windows XP
Thanks for this
Everything works perfectly using Silverlight 2 on an (intel) Macbook. The levels are tough, most definitely.

Thanks Dave, and also for your kind comments / feeback on the game - all noted. I have not been able to reproduce this bug (IE8 beta 1 or 2?) so I'm going to put it down as a win7/ie8 quirk for now, unless I get multiple reports. How did you get on with Vista?

Thanks this worries me as if the game is not correctly developer-enabling accounts at all times we're in trouble. Did anything happen when you completed the tutorial? Any sort of message at all? I cannot reproduce the error as when I complete the tutorial on my machine a message box appears telling me "Congratulations!..." and my account is upgraded to developer status.

Sure, that sounds very interesting, if we can't get this problem sorted quickly let me know and I can manually developer-enable your account so you can have a crack at the level designer. In the next phase of the launch, we (ie me) will be paying out cash for levels as well.

Thanks for this - this sounds like an error in code rather than comms. Can you remember what moves you made in the level? If you're able to reproduce this error and then (in firefox) go to Tools -> Error Console, hopefully there will be an error message that could help me to fix this bug. The other error you mention is a known comms exception that I'll be looking at.

Seriously? Whoa! And this happens when you click anything in the login screen of the level designer, right? (I'm assuming you got the logo and login textboxes appearing with no issues) Does the Mozilla crash reporter give you any additional info that you could send me about the crash?
Thanks so much for re-installing, by the way, sorry this didn't help. This doesn't sound like it's something that's going to be easy to diagnose, in fact I already have a headache just thinking about it. Possibly a silverlight bug, a browser bug, or both. Do you have javascript enabled in Firefox, by the way? And have you tried logging in with Internet Explorer, does that work?

You know people, as we're now discussing multiple issues, and I don't want to abuse the charity of xda-developers for hosting this discussion, it might actually be better to gradually move things to the squarepeg forums. (http://forums.squarepeggame.com) I'll disable email account activation for a few days to make it quicker for you to set up accounts.
Of course if people would prefer to post here, that's understandable, I'll still gladly answer posts in this thread.
On a general note, thanks for all the testing so far (eg stanglifemike) - and I'm really pleased that the general impression of the game itself seems to be a good one... ...oh, and @elazullizard - thanks for the feedback... are the levels really that tough? Are you talking about "The First Hundred" or the tutorial?.. ..if it's the tutorial I'm now worried that I've made it too hard!

[Q] Gaming on the transformer

I have a little question:
Is it possible to play games on the transformer through a remote-desktop app such as teamviewer? And with possible I mean is the quality acceptable, is it fluent, is the keyboard-dock usable etc. and with games I mean stuff like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft etc.
So, anyone has an answer to this...?
it is if your connection is good enough. Screen is sort of small though.
Pretty sure you're gonna end up padding someone's k/d ratio if you try to play CoD this way, as well as failing miserably in arena/raiding. Questing and instances should be ok though, but its not going to be nearly as good via a remote client as it would be if you were right there. Also, i havent tried to reconfigure it, if its even possible, but in android the there is no right click so the RDP/VNC clients all interpret right clicks as the back button, so good luck trying to ADS in CoD using right click...but i guess you can work around it by mapping it to a key instead.
I hope it works out for you better than it did me =P
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Could be neat to try the onlive gaming service lol
So what I understand from here is that you have tried but the biggest problem is not being able to right-click? Also I'm aware that the quality will not be as good as on your normal pc would be, but I just wanted to know if it's playable.
Does anyone know a remote-desktop app that let's you configure the right-click key? I know it's probably possible since teamviewer let's you use some other keys like ins and home that your Android device normally doesn't have, but I haven't found an option for right-clicking yet.
Edit: by the way, I don't have a transformer (yet) that's why I can't test it out myself. One of the things that will decide whether or not I'm getting one is this factor, so I hope you guys can help me .
yes

That's just what I've been wanting to see, thanks!
I'm sure that's laggy in real life, and I'm sure it's not ideal, but at least we know it's possible, and not just a slideshow.
This made me smile...
Thanks!

Sure....I've managed to get monkey island 1 and 2, sam and max and broken sword all working pretty well. Just have to download the relevant plug ins from the market and providing you have the necessary files from the original games you're good to go.
Still one question... Is it possible to configure an easy right-click button?? (Most ideal would be the possibility to actually right-click with an external mouse instead of going back)
Perhaps I'm missing something, but does anyone know how to get input from the keyboard dock to go to a game via Splashtop, or if it's possible? Every game I've tried will take touchpad/mouse input, but nothing on the keyboard.
I just got confirmation from someone that my idea does work and it's playable without any noticeable lag.
There are 2 problems though:
1. Full-screen doesn't work, so you have to find a way to play it in window-mode
2. The mouse input isn't complete. What I understand is that in the game Duke Nukem Forever you can't move the screen with your mouse, what makes the game rather useless on the transformer. However, I have seen some videos of call of duty where the mouse input does work, so I'm not sure what's the problem here.
Anyone has a solution for this? Maybe something for a transformer dev?

I definitely played just a little bit of Transformers War for Cybertron and was able to use the keyboard!
I have had mixed results with trying to play games. Some games work in fullscreen, even though it says they can't (I was able to play Guild Wars this way). Unreal Tournament 3 and Sacred 2 were a no go though. It would just stop streaming when I launched them.
There is some slight lag no matter what, even on the desktop, and that is with me sitting 10 feet from my router and my PC wired, not wireless, to help reduce lag. Some say it is indiscernible, but I definitely notice. Overall I find this setup to be playable for MMO games like Aion, Guild Wars, etc, but not instant action games where the half a second ping can miss you a shot. Just my opinion.
P.S. I love playing games using my PS3 controller in bluetooth mode with the PC in the other room! (I'm using MotioninJoy on my PC so I can play Gamecube games on my Transformer)
@ryukeima
You're the first person I heard complaining about lang, so maybe it's your Internet connection?
Anyone here plays the game league of legende? I want to know some more about that game on the transformer .
I've played Civ 5 and The Witcher on my tablet using the included Splashtop. It wasn't too bad, but I don't know that I would do it on a regular basis. The play experience was good enough for me to believe that if someone came out with remote desktop software with this use in mind it would be very playable (Hey, if the Wii U can do it, I should be able to pull it off with my monster gaming PC and the Transformer, which has to be better than the tablet Nintendo is using).
Splashtop's user interface is a little weird which causes issues. I think I am going to try the Citrix ZenDesktop and see if it works out better.
AS A SIDE NOTE, I looked at PocketCloud remote desktop software for this use as well, but only the RDP protocol on PocketCloud supports sound and if you are running Windows Home edition (even Premium) you don't have an RDP server. The VNC protocol in PocketCloud does not support sound.
Is something like this hard to make? If not, then xda could maybe start developing their own remote desktop app with this idea in mind...?

As far as I could see, RDP dosen't do DirecX, so no games at all. At least on XP.
Anyway... it seems to me that Splashtop uses the same idea behind Sony's Remote Play! It's essentially an audio/video stream with inputs going the other way.

PSX Emulation on this thing.

So I got an Iconia today and I;m trying to put it through its paces. SNES emulation works fine but I'm having a war of a time getting PS1 emulation to work. I've got both PSX4Droid and FPse on this thing. I've got the playstaion bios and a .bin image of Tekken 3 that I ripped.
psx4droid won't run the game at all. The controls show up but then it immediately shows "unexpected error..." message.
FPse will actually run the game but the onscreen controlls wont respond. If I "Eject" the game it'll go to the Title screen and I can control up and down but nothing else.
I've seen posts stating that people have gotten PSX emulation to work on this, but none that detail just how. Any help in this recard would be greatly appreciated as I've only got 2 weeks to decide if I'm keeping this thing.
Edit(I have FPse working somewhat?: Ok I did some more poking around and I think I have something here. Looks like it was a matter of the start button not showing up on screen. Turning it to portrait got all the controls on screen and it actually was responding to the button presses. In order to get it to run smoothly I had to crank up frame skip but it'd showing 60fps. Does that even make sense?
I had all these same problems so i fell back on my old computer repair days experience. Some times newer is not always better ... I couldnt get any of the newer versions of psx4droid to run or even load games right. so afetr some digging i found the maker of psx4droid for a short while made one he called psx4droidv2 but for what ever reason he does not have it on his site. so I just googled it what your looking for is psx4droidv2 1.1.2 you just instal it like normal and put the bios files and game files all in same folder and I am up and running like a champ on my iconia everything loads and works. it even lets me do away with on screen controls and use my ps3 controller to play the games, you just have to map the buttons but is easy.
Hope this helps if so give me thanks.

Well it runs with is more than I can say for the first version of psx4droid that I'd downloaded. Unfortunately It doesn't seem to run at a solid frame rate. Also the screen scales too skinny.
That kind of settings do you have yours set to?
On another note, I've gotten FPse running at a consistent frame rate but there seems to be some games that simply won't play with it (Megaman Legends 2).

I had no time to try it, maybe later in the week.

It supports loop device. I just tried to mount a loop device with a loop image and it worked.
EDIT: With flibblesan's r5 kernel but it should be supported by stock kernel anyway
You are aware that ubuntu has no proper support for touchscreens; even if it runs you won't gain anything by doing that. When I installed a linux a few months ago on another device it worked, then I was fascinated about one minute and then I decided that there is no use for it an deleted it eventually.
I just do not understand why it is so important to get a desktop-os running on a smartphone. Battery drains fast, no support for the radio etc.

Its not important, but funny and cool if it works (on this device). How did you do it?
Until recently I still had my old samsung-omnia-winmo6.5-phone. There was an app for linux available; you just had to install an imagefile to the sd-card. The fun did last for a minute and then I realized I cannot do anything with this small screen and that it was pretty much useless.
I think that a lot of people here will just read the topic and think "omg this is amazing, now I can have my desktop-os on the phone, great" and later they realize how much time they just wasted.
If it really is fun for you guys, I won't try and stop you
How about using linux programs? i think that it may be quite useful sometimes... Put honestly... it is just for funright now... but it may be helpful if we could dual boot.... maybe in the future
I got this working, it isn't that slow as you could imagine, firefox takes around 30 sec to start and load the front page. That said, the keyboard works but is way off and impossible to use (I push "d" and "f" shows up and so on).
if anyone understand this the keyboard will be fixed:
In VNC’s xstartup file: $HOME/.vnc/xstartup
You have to add the line export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1 before
/etc/X11/Xsession or gnome-session (in case you use GNOME)
Screenshot actually taken with an ubuntu tool, I have set the resolution to 1200*800 in the virtual enviriment.
Here is a video with Huawei Ideos X5 running Ubuntu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SaoneDtNqA&feature=BFp&list=WL01C152CD7D31A7C8&index=1
Will try this later tonight and let you guys know if it works. Just have to work first >.<
The significance of linux running is to have a backup operating system to use on the phone if the Oracle / Google dispute over Java begins to really disrupt the market.
Think also freedombox.org, your own personal, secure and anonymous cloud system as a refuge if a dictatorship emerges or particularly nasty rise of corporatism occurs.
At heart, our U8800's can easily be linux box server with up to 32Gb of onboard storage with wi-fi AND gsm network connections. Being battery operated, if the thought police decend upon your community, you could take it to another place, unknown to the nasty guys, and re-establish mesh network connection to get reports of civil rights abuses out to the rest of the world.
Reason enough to have the capability to run Ubuntu Server edition (or any other Linux Server flavour)?
If you're interested to see what's already possible, even within Android (Linux will deliver more power), install "File Expert" from the market to get your very own web file server, right there in your phone.

You didn't Found a better ubuntu boot-file, x5 faster, keyboard works, WIFI, pre-installed with many programs ( Open Office for work.. etc) easy to use with touch screen. here is how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUG9aC_tH5s

Linux On Dex - First Impressions

So, I am at work and I showed off Linux on Dex to some other Developers and Engineers here.
Impressed they were, but it's time to really dig in.
Here is what I love about it on first look:
Great to have a fleshed Linux experience on my phone
Great dev tools come with the image (IntelliJ and also Visual Studio Code and more)
Has plenty of apps to get you started and it's pretty thoughtful
Looks great at 1920x1080 as well as 2560x1440 resolutions on a monitor
Switching between Dex and Ubuntu is pretty snappy
Things I didn't like:
Just a LITTLE bit laggy sometimes
Need to either use ARM compiled apps or compile them yourself
The Default 10GB partition size was too small, so I would suggest using 15GB at least, after updates/upgrades (Ubuntu OS updates that is), you'll still have about 35% free space with 15GB disk
You cannot "install" this on the SDCard, only internal memory, so keep that in mind if you have the 128GB model and tons of apps
Once installed, you cannot delete the 3GB+ zip file you downloaded, so there is that wasted space as well (ok, I have not tried REALLY hard to delete it yet, but Google Files won't delete it, nor do I know the repercussions of deleting this file too)
I'm still trying to work out how to access the files on the device (outside the Linux container), not sure if it is possible, but I have not had a lot of time with it as of now
BONUS!!
When you are not in Dex mode (normal handset mode), you can still launch Linux on Dex, but you cannot get the full desktop experience.
Click on the Terminal icon under the RUN button and you can drop into the Ubuntu Shell and still use commands (like SSH-ing to servers using your certs and stuff).
Of course, the down side, small screen. Hey, in a pinch, when I am on the road and needs to SSH into an AWS instance and run a couple commands, I won't complain!!
All in all, I think this will be great for Dev's to play with, not sure how useful it REALLY will be, but I know from a DevOps/Architect/Engineer, it's nice to have as a backup to be able to actually take care of things without having to drag out the whole laptop.
All this, with a $20 adapter.
Any other thoughts for those that have used it?
Hello friend, I have mine installed on my 128gb Sdcard.
How did you get it on your SD Card?
Thanks!

Move the file from LoD folder to the SD card and reassign the file location in the Linux on Dex app, it worked for me but moved it back to internal storage to ensure best performance .
My impression? They will poorly maintain it and I suspect it will be discontinued without any real notice. Registration was broken for well over a week before signups ended. You cannot get in contact with anyone from the team. Care doesn't even know it exists.
I am yet to find a use case that improves upon remote access to an Ubuntu 18.04 VM running on a cloud or at home, but I'm not a developer.
Perhaps if you are stuck somewhere without an Internet connection and feel like coding somewhere in the mountains or in the jungle.. But then you would need a handy monitor, keyboard, mouse and a power source..?
I think I can sum this up in one simple sentence - "Because I can..."
It's like having linux on a PS3, because it could.
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but looks promising. That doesn't mean it will be supported very well, time will tell.
Hardware wise it should work very well, and there is ALWAYS a good reason to have a handy (mostly) self-contained PC with you in case you CAN'T access the net...
Would be great to get an idea of some real life use cases..
Would be very happy to see this project pick up some community developer attention, the platform is only as good as the tools developed for it.
In the absence of an official LoD forum for developers perhaps that community should be developed here.

I got this installed on my 8GB Note 9 today. I didn't get registered for the beta, but download the app and the Ubuntu image and got it all up and running today. My only complaint so far is it won't run full screen on Dex. That may be because I'm running the Pie Beta. Not sure how it operates on Oreo Dex.
I'll play around with it more later. I basically just plugged into my monitor and opened it up today.
Well, here is a real-life use case that saved me a TON of time and effort.
I set up the Linux on Dex with many tools and configs I need to be able to do my work (Sr. DevOps Architect/Engineer) on my AWS servers. I had an instance that was having some issues and was notified via the monitoring platform and was able to get my phone out, run the Ubuntu Shell and SSH/Fix the issue without ever having to pull out the laptop and tether it while on the train headed home.
There ARE some use cases where this will come in handy, but I do agree that these are real "edge" cases too. No "normal" user will ever really find this helpful.

Full screen on oreo.. Have you tried Dex max app?
planning to install LoD and curious if it can actually decompile and recompile apk's as a laptop would..?! mostly I'm interested in Themes for Samsung.. using few apk as templates to swap files, images and recompiling the apk, will it be able and will it properly sign it ?! and if so which way should I go?! do I need to install java, SDK, plugin I saw there ?!
any advice would be great.. thanx..

I think you need powersupply as well in the adapter for it to work.
