Theory on extended battery life on EF02 - Epic 4G General

Just postulating a theory here, but I feel like I've noticed a pattern with the battery life I see on EF02.
Day 1: installed AAi3 over SRF1.2, kept ec05 modem. Horrible battery (dropping 15% per hour with very light use)
Day 2: wiped everything, flashed aai3. Still same bat life with ec05. Odined ef02/ got ef10 ota. Battery life improvement but hard to quantify.
Day 3: put phone on charger on way to work, was at 99% for most of the drive (35 min). Kept phone in pocket all day, moderate use with some 4g (no wifi). Did not have to plug phone in until day 4 at about 1pm (28 hrs battery life).
Day 5 and 6: left phone off charger on way to work, phone dropped to 40% or so after about 12 hours, moderate use both days.
Day 7: charged on way to work, battery at 65% when I left work after heavy use with 4g on all day.
WhI at I think is happening is that samsung tweaked the way the epic charges the battery. On ec05 (and all previous builds) when I charged during my commute I would get a battery full notification within a minute or two. On ef02 (or at least aai3), I don't get a notification for 20 minutes at least, and sometimes not at all. Also I notice that when I wake up in the morning if I do anything my phone drops to 99% and keeps charging. Without me pulling it off the charger.
Anyone else noticed this behavior? The fact that charging the battery with the phone off is messed up on ef02 makes me feel like I'm right as well.

I've definitely noticed that it takes awhile to get the battery full indicator. I think you may be on to something. There are times when my battery stays at 100% for an hour or 2. Other times it drops to 99% right away. In any case i'm glad they fixed it because i couldn't even get my phone to charge past 96% before.

My phone has always done this.

Remember that these are all leaked builds and aren't a finished product..... It could be anything but its most likely not intentionally put there by samsung...

Yeah Im about to install it,thanks...

Yeah I've noticed this also. They definately did something with the kernel or the way it charges cause I've noticed since ive been on ef02 my phone charges to 100 % where before It would never get above 96 or 97 %. I wonder if they took some ideas from the netarchy kernels people here were working on?

You've thought this through so much that your convincing yourself

I have extremely consistant and terrible battery life on the EF02 roms. Cannot for the life of me figure out why. A friend of mine has an EPIC on the same Rom, we are both running aai3 with ef02 modems, both work at the same place so we spend a great deal of time in the same building. He gets a day and a half sometimes 2 days (and he hasn't callibrated). I will get maybe a half a day if I'm lucky and I have callibrated... no idea why this is. I can go back to ec05 and get a day or more out of it no problem which seems about on par with anyone else. I am running no widgets and this is extremely moderate use, pretty much only texting throughout the day.
only difference is the callibration. I'm almost wondering if I need to odin back to ec05 and recallibrate and try to flash ef02 again. That's the only thing I can think of that is different between our setups.

Are you on ef02 modem or ef10? Have you tried ee03 modem? You are describing exactly the same battery problem I had when I flashed aai3 without odining the new modem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I'm on the ef02 modem. I tried ef10 also with the same results, I was getting a pretty poor signal though on there so I went back to ef02.
I seen noobnl was using ef10 with good life, and most people are using ef02. That's what my buddy is using also. I don't get it.

Did you flash from cwm over a froyo rom, or did you odin to ef02 first? Just wondering, because I just wiped 3x over srf 1.2 instead of going the 'proper' odin route. Other than my modem hiccup, its worked for me.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I odined the files from Noobnl's thread at first and was getting the bad battery life. When my buddy odined with the great battery life, he used the ef02plus.tar. So I tried odining again with ef02plus.tar, but not dice, still have crappy battery life.

Try to odin back to ec05 and flash aai3 over from cwm... Worked for me. Just remember to odin the new modem if you want it

Did you ever find an answer to this? I tried the stock/deodexed EF02 ROM for a day on the EF10 modem and a day on the EF02 modem. Battery life on either was terrible due to the deep sleep problem.

aai3 is anonymous rom version 3

So I tried odining ec05. Recalibrated.
Flashed just aai3. I pulled my phone off the charger at 8. 12 now. Its been 4 hours and I'm at 50%. Looks like it didn't work. Poooop.

Display Killing Battery

For some reason my battery has been dying unusualy fast since about a week ago. On the battery usagepage it says display is using up 90-97 percent. It never did that before..it would at most be at around 50.
I'm on a dk28 rom. At first I was getting amazng battery life 20+ hours of heavy use but now I'm barely getting 5. I tried odining (can I make it a verb) back to stock and then going back but it didn't help. Anybody else experiencing this?

There been a lot of talk about worse battery life on froyo leak. Make sure you are still stopping the drm media hub crap. I'm on froyo and my battery is slightly worse. Keep your screen display all the way down too.

The only way you could have that on a stock battery is have the phone off and battery pulled out for 34 hours.
I'm getting a lot better life with the overclocked kernal and midnight eb13. 8hrs of moderate usage and was only down to 55%. I'm loving it.

keep an eye on your TWS. This has been a huge issue for me, and keeps draining the life out of the battery. Only solution so far seems to be the ariplane mode toggle work around.
I was able to make 30+ hours on a single full charge with dk28.

if you all want better battery life then disable your data network ...the way to do this is hold down the power button ...just like you are turning your phone off, you will see the data network. hit that button..it will disable your internet constantly running in the back ground and also will disable notifications...you can turn it on at your discression when you want to check your email, internet, or anything pertaining to data network...but trust me this will give you alot more battery life..also you can install setcpu and clock it to run lower when your phone is charging, not in use , or even when you are using your phone...this also helps substantually...good luck guys

Very nice suggestions I'd also like to add that using Wifi will use a LOT less battery then 3G probably 80% of the time. At work I have poor reception so leaving 3G on will kill my battery, however WiFi it's not uncommon I leave work after 10 hours unplugged with only 20-25% of the battery used! Make sure to set the wifi sleep policy to never if you go this route, that way it never goes back to 3G even when sleeping.
Turning data off completely and using the phone only lightly all day at work (a few text messages) (10 hours unplugged) i've left work with 88% percent battery remaining
Battery life has improved greatly. I turn off background data, stop the Omadrmblablabla service, no live backgrounds, but it is full color. With moderate use I can see 10 hours and still have 40% before I go to bed.
My battery life has been greatly increased too. The battery indicator seems much more accurate too. I did the factory reset several times, then wiped and used the samsung installer.

I wish I could be as lucky as you. This is by far my biggest complaint with eb13. I have tried flashing multiple times to no avail. How did you update? odin, samsung exe, update zip, or ota?
I did an odin flash, and my battery is much better as well. On 2.1 stock I would usually get about 16 hrs with my usage. Now, with the same usage on EB13, I can get about 36hrs (charging every other night).
I did the zip update first, and my battery was awful and only lasted for 4 hours. But since the odin flash, everything is great!

But as for myself, I'm getting way better battery on eb13. I think some people have bad experiences sure to installing done apps rgat may run in the back ground. Do this test, reflash stock. Don't install any apps but what thee phone comes with. And use the phone for 2 days. Then you will notice rgat index outer does last longer.

I have tried that as well, no dice. Only the airplane toggle seems to fix it. I have to airplane toggle every time I boot up. Once I do that the TWS is around 2-5% which is normal for me.

TWS = time without signal. Airplane mode resets the radio on the device and somehow fixes it (albeit, temporarily). I read somewhere on here people believe it has something to do with the fact that, for some reason, the phone is looking for a gsm signal as well as cdma, and since this is not a gsm phone, it obviously can't find a gsm signal. The constant searching for gsm is causing a drain on the battery. This happens in areas with full sprint coverage, like my house. For whatever reason re-setting the radio forces it to stay on cdma mode only. I think i read someone saying something along the lines of it being a problem because this is was an update created for devices across the board, ie, for both cdma and gsm handsets. Its just a bug that needs addressed. Some people have it, some don't -- which is even more frustrating!
If you are not experiencing this problem, please tell me what method you used to update. I have only tried Odin (and update zip once), so I will try the samsung exe to see if it does anything.

Bionix - Best battery life ever!

;D I'm running Bionix v1.3.1 and the battery life is AWESOME. Yesterday, I did a LOT of texting, gaming and talking. By the end of the day, I still had 90%.
Usually, if I do that on any other ROM, by the end of the day, I'd probably have around 0%-30%
I didn't recondition the battery, either.
BUT ONE THING, I've NEVER EVER experienced a problem with the GPS on my vibrant, but right after flashing V1.3.1, it wouldn't work anymore. It'd take like 15 mins to lock D:<
wow. using any different kernels? What modem? I get stock battery life on bionix. I have no idea how people are getting such amazing battery life. Maybe i need to do a battery reconditioning.

Same here, running 1.3.1 with the overstock kernel, keeping wifi on all day due to the great wifi sleep policy, after an 8 hour work day of moderate to heavy use my battery is at about 70% everyday. I don't even want to update to the newest version of overstock, too scared to lose what I have.
Edit: And my gps works flawlessly, but I've done the hardware fix on it.

Hate calling people liars but I will never understand people who get 2 days wiht an oem battery. I jsut dont see someone besides an extremely light user getting 2+ days without a charge. I got 2 days with my 2700mah extended battery.

This is probably as accurate as you can get:
Heavy use: 6 hours or less, MAYBE 7, but unlikely if its heavy use.
Moderate use: 10-14 or less, no more than 14.
Light: a day, and possibly more.

It was good for me but no as good as Trigger, but the rom that lasted more on a charge for me was Azura,it had incredible battery life.
I used to get 2+days battery life on mine when I was running previous version of Bionix. I can't recall which version it was, i think 1.2.0. It was when the froyo was released for the vibrant i believe january-febuary-ish. After flashing to 1.3.1, i can't get passed to 24hours anymore. Also all my settings, syncs, wallpaper (etc..),except the modem, kernel, and 2 scrabble apps, where similar. The KB1 modem was one of the culprits of the drain and i have it replace with the JK and KA variants (still testing which one is the best). KB1 was awesome with my gps locks though with almost 3 meter accuracy with 8/12 sats locked). The speeds were also like +1-2mbs depending on the location and this was tested with a friend that has JKx modem. Also google googles and the 3d gallery up was not shutting down the sensor server which was draining the battery hardcore. Until now I still havent been able to replicate how I got the 2days battery life. I could revert to the previous bionix version because i have a back up too but this battery issue is not really that of a problem.

Finally sent EE03 packing

I've been running EE03 since it was leaked.
The reason I stuck with it was because I saw EXCELLENT battery life (compared to SRF1.0.2. which I was running previusly) with the same usage (for me)..
Gingerbread was laggy at times, had some minute bugs that were tolerable (during my usage patterns) but I fell in love with the battery life.
On SRF 1.0.2 I would put my phone in airplane mode overnight to keep the battery from dying while i slept.. while it was a workaround (for me) it wasn't the most desirable solution.. I felt adventurous one night while on GB and left the phone sitting, no airplane mode, just to see how far the battery would drop compared to SRF... i only lost 5% overnight.. THAT was the ticket for me.. so i kept it and ran it.. haven't flashed a thing since.. no new apps, no new configurations.. it was working beautifully (as well as a leaked build could be expected to ) .. but it was very tolerable for me..
Until the last couple days... I noticed (all of a sudden) that while I'm sitting next to my computer, phone plugged in to charge before bed, the phone would disconnect/reconnect to the computer.. it would make that sound when you plug it in.. it would do this no matter what percent of charge it had.. for no rhyme or reason... I wiggled the cord in both the phone and computer in case the cord was to blame.. nothing.. i couldn't 'force replicate' this anomaly.. Further, at night around 4 in the morning the phone would vibrate and pop up that it was going to die, please plug in charger... the second night, I put the phone in airplane mode overnight and I STILL got the pop up at 3am that it was going to die...
So I decided (at 11:30) last night to ODIN back to EC05, then root w/ CWM 3.0.2.5. and flash SRF 1.1.1 .... I'll see how it goes.. hopefully battery life on this build is better than what I experienced on 1.0.2 lol...
Sorry for the long post.. I just wanted to share my frustration and see if anyone else had this weird anomaly w/ EE03.
/venting and pissing off the rest of XDA for long post
ive had the same problems with the disconnect/reconnect sound off. on top of what you have mentioned i have also had the problem of the phone being fully charged but showing the red charge light instead of the blue fully charged light. additionally the phone seems to get much more hot on this rom, i can simply be playing a game or something and the phone will get so hot that the charging is forced to be stopped, never had this problem untill the ee03,

I've had problems with the phone not charging all the way. It will show 100% charge and then stop charging. When you unplug, it then shows the actual battery level, which has been as low as 35%. I've tried lots of things like wiping battery stats, but it keeps happening randomly.
EE03 is still fairly buggy. Some days my battery life is fantastic. Other days, it drains like a sieve. Even when I have fairly similar issues. Seems to correspond to how "hot" the phone is running that day. Also, phone calls just eat battery life.
going back to EC05 too... gonna be a long few weeks (hopefully only that). Awesome, just too hot, buggy, and I get PISSPOOR battery life.... but I have horrible reception at home, and even using roam control it still sucks down the juice. Also, I cant remember, is the settings process supposed to be permanenty running??? mine is, maybe that explains the settings not sticking... go samsprint go!
Its going to be hard for me to leave EC05. Full bars on my 4G. Wifi Tether is insanely fast and reliable. Bluetooth pairs properly. This has been the best modem for me by a mile

EE03 has been strange for me at times. I've noticed when it's charging and it makes the charging sound, the battery life will be terrible the next time I take it off. However, if I just reboot it, it usually stops making the sound at random times, and the battery life is giving me 12+ hours/day.

GingerBattery Sucks?

I dunno man, just gingerbread itself appears to have fubared my phone. I wiped sd, wiped phone, factory reset, odined stock EC05 and took the forced EI22 update. Even still, android system chews through battery at >90%. A small thermonuclear power plant could not give my phone enough juice.
This coming after I tried multiple combinations of roms, kernels, uninstalling apps, and freezing data sucking apps that caused high wake locks....
I have tried stock gingerBreadEI22, ACS 3.5 - 5.5, ERA RC1 & 2, and Random Rom, with nubernel, different samurai kernels, and just whatever the chef cooked up. All the same, excessively high "system" battery usage.
Anyone is / was having the same issues and able to iron it out?

I agree with Alkah0liK, but with my experience so far, if I don't use the phone all day it doesn't really use the battery, but as soon as I start talking, listen to music, or web surf it because a pig. I must be doing something it does not like. I can go a couple minutes with the screen on (at lowest setting mind you) and watch the battery drop 2-3% or more, almost dead battery within 10 - 12 hours even in /out of airplane mode...
Is there something really wonky with CWM? Funny thing is this started happening right about the time i switched over to v5. I am in the process of reverting back to wiping everything, odin to EC05, and going v3.1.01 again.
The battery life is better with gingerbread, but its not going to make your phone run 2-3 days on one battery life. Sorry my friend, those days are long gone. It would be very hard to find any cell phone that can run for longer than 24 hours these days.
No I get that, but I was able to use my phone for more than a couple hours a day before gingerbread. B4 the leaks I was running Viper Rom EXT4 with genocide at 1200 ondemand and still getting through the day. If I cut it back to 1000 and went easy I was only charging overnight to bump it back up to full.
I was even using RandomKing's and ERA's leak based roms with EH06 & EH17 without any issue. For me it really has been either the EI22 / CWM5 / latest roms.
Hey alky, I was also in your position. I tried every rom you tried, with minimal pleasing. My advice, if you can live without 4g, flash the current cyanogen and set the render effect on night mode. Enjoy a thorough battery life my friend. Nothing beats it thus far. Can't wait till we see cm9.

why would you want to use a 4G as if it were a 3G phone?

The biggest battery drain I have noticed is when there is little to no signal, the battery just seems to get sucked dry

Thanks! That was actually going to be my next try. I only get 4G when I am downtown, not very much as of late anyway.
FYI- I have found what I suspect as two possible culprits on ACS 5.1 & 5.5, and ERA RC1 & 2. According to better battery stats CM_VnoteService and *Sync for GTalk will run and run and run unless you open the applications and go through initial setup. Those two process will stay stopped so long as I leave them open / connected, once I close them - the partial wakelocks restart and run until you open the apps again (or just uninstall).
Even with my obsessively high amount of .acore launcher time and better batter stats application usage, they are still well below the "system" usage under the process dropdown.
It definately sips battery when not in use. Although I feel I get more screen on time with ACS ICS. I regularly have over 3 hours of screen on time with GB, I don't remember getting 3 hours on even SRF 1.2.

I agree with Alkah0liK, but with my experience so far, if I don't use the phone all day it doesn't really use the battery, but as soon as I start talking, listen to music, or web surf it because a pig. I actually want to go back to 2.2 and use frozen rom again from ACS again. Can't figure out how yet though

Yeah there's definitely battery drainage going on in gb. Or it could just be the colonel.
Idk but if you could visually see the battery drain as you're using it...there's a problem.
Actually its an ei22 problem...stock eh06 (yes...non-deodexed, just rooted. Stock kernal) got me running over 24 hours on a charge with 3 hours screen on.

Turn off your syncs. If there is no signal your syncs will keep trying and burn up your battery. Turning off data mode in low to no signal areas will conserve battery.

Did you get Kentucky Fried Chicken from the Colonel all over your phone again? LOL

Make sure upgrading to GB did not change any syncs. Also make sure new apps aren't loading into memory and sucking battery like Talk or Google +. Grab Memory Booster lite and pull up the task killer to see everything loading on your phone. The stock task killer sucks.
I recommend paying the $50 for battery and portable charger/storage unit. I'm a stock user who just had 41 hours with my new battery with 2hrs of screen time. I really like having two batteries too. No more charging cords connected to the phone...ever
Edit: the batt. I bought was a stock 1500mah batt. and charger kit from a sprint store. No regrets

Also, be sure to go to settings on your facebook if you have one and turn off notifications. That helped my battery life as well.

Still running 100% ERA Legendary v4.0.1 (with provided kernel) and I squeezed ~74 hours of pure standby time out of my stock battery.
Data Sync (FB every 6hrs, Weather every 2hrs, Google push)/GPS/Auto Brightness = on
TWS = 4%
Display Time = ~24mins (sent 3 texts and checked 1 voicemail)
100% on 3G
Had I turned off all synching, GPS and lowered brightness all the way, I would have probably gotten 4 days.
Battery life has heavily depended on the strength of signal for me as well. I moved recently and have been living in the basement while the renovations are going on upstairs. No airave (it is used at a different location) means little to no signal in a brick house due to Sprint's POS signal frequency. Although I've been flashing different kernels and maybe not allowing them to settle + undervoling a bit (very conservatively, will not OC over 1100). But it is true that since days I was on BB Tour, not one phone lasted a full day without an extended battery. I'm pretty much decided on VZW switch once Prime comes out - one of the factors is better expected power management of ICS and possibility of adding an extended battery without worrying about making the phone too bulky (given how thin it is).
Man that sucks, I've always had great battery with gingerbread. Right now I'm on RC2
