Thinking of gettin' a Moto Flipout - Flipout and Charm General

Hello,
I use a Motorola Defy on CM7 which is preety good, can run almost anything you trow at it. I want a second device and thought the Flipout was nice and in the price range in my country.
Can i update to 2.2? Anything special i should know about this device?
I don't care if the ROM is custom or not, i will install the best.
Battery life in normal use ( music gaming internet?)
thanks in advance

don't get the flipout
i am the only dev here and i cant even get custom 2.1 to work
get an htc wildfire
or lg gt540
sony erricsson x10 mini
all have 2.2 wether its custom or officail
flipout is dead even im moving on
to better pastures
just got myself htc sensation in exchange for my flipout and my gt540

Thanks
thanks for the answer, sad to hear this, it's a cute qwerty device (. 2.2 was a must.. still, will go for smth else. I hate the lack of support Motorola is showing... the Defy was lucky, people bought it, devs came, CM7 came, Official CM7 is arround the corner, and great hardware. I was looking for the CHARM... maybe... but it's more expensive... i want cheap QWERTY Android 2.2 at least.
Again thanks, have fun with the Sensation.

even the charm is stuck on 2.1 motorola have stated that niether the
flipout or charm will see any updates
WHATEVER YOU GET
DONT BUY A MOTOROLA

lol, silent_bob52637 I can feel your frustration..
Actually I am selling off an Omnia 2, and a guy approaches me and said if I wanted to swap the unit off with his Motorola Flipout.. after watching some funny youtube clips and reading other comments, and FINALLY reading yours which came from a dev, I think I'll be better off selling it for hard cold cash than swapping it with a Flipout.

Xperia Mini Pro is more expenisve... will research more... maybe it's not such a crappy device, i would have used it for texting/ IM'ing/ maybe browser, email. Still Xperia Mini pro it's much better.

Another don't get one here.
I had this pre-ordered for the good things it has (small form and qwerty), to be let down by Motorola keeping it locked and then without updates.
Think I'll be after a Desire at some point, and will never be buying a phone again until it has been out a while and I can read what other people have done to it.
I also have a set a battery covers for it so it matches things

[Solved]Buy this phone now?... Bought it!!!

Hi,
I got 600$ to spend now for a phone, currently on T-mobile(USA) and my contract is ending this month(can get discounted phone for other 2 years of contract but all phone are ****xxx), and I want Android now as I am seek of WM.
So my question is to buy Xperia X10(considering cons of 1.6 android and no multitouch) or a different phone? Or wait fore some upcoming phones? Anyone got any ideas about this?
Thank you.
I will say buy it.
I bought mine from Taiwan becasue Band 1/4/8 works flawlessly with t-mobile 3g (USA)
And for some reason, some apps like google map perform better than my Nexus one (what the hell?), not just the app response faster but the gps just perform better. It is fater than my N1 when powering up the sat for gps and it will pin point faster than the N1.
timescape and mediascape is cool but I am sure media player is a really personal preference thing.
Camera is awsome with led that will blind you and can manually stays on.
Graphic is good thanks to the Sony screen.
design is beautiful I will say is one of the best looking cel in the market.
Anyway, don't get cold feet becasue of 1.6. This phone is FAST on performance and NO LAG at all.
PS, Sony confirmed X10 will get 2.1 update Q4 as early as Sept.
Re: Buy this phone now?
The x10 is a very nice phone, so definitely look into it. But if you have 600 for an unsubsidized phone, you should definitely consider the nexus one, it gets updates sooner, already has 2.1, will get 2.2 very shortly and will have gingerbread (2.?) By the end of the year, also has the multi touch bonus. But they are both very solid phones, if your happy with standard the x10 is very nice, if you like to mod your phone nexus one is the go

Go for the Xperia X10, trust me. The only thing it doesn't have is multi-touch, but you can easily live without it. Especially with Sony's one-touch zoom.
Now, since it's getting even closer to getting rooted, you'll be happy with a phone that has good hardware, software, and aesthetics---- and yes, people do judge a phone by it's cover. (a sad lesson I learned with my p990).
Re: Buy this phone now?
Buy it. I sold mine and want to buy it again because I like it so much more than the nexus one. I can say that sony ericsson did a fantastic job customizing 1.6. They really covered up what google left out and later implemented in 2.1.
It's a solid phone. Just look at 2.2 and see if you need any of those changes. Then, browse the forum to read about other people's problems and complaints. Finally, try to go to a local retailer and try out the phones. Ebay has the X10i, which is what you should be looking at, for 525 from a new york seller. You should only buy the nexus from google, since it's the only way to get it for now; retailers have it but mark it up higher than the google price.
Good luck. I hope you find the phone that meets your needs.
I'm also a fellow T-Mobile USA user who has the Xperia X10i who came from a Windows Mobile 6.x phone.
Your best options are likely the Xperia X10i or the Nexus One.
You'll really have to think about the feature set and about what you want in a phone. I'd say the Nexus One is probably a better "all-around" phone if you want to tinker with your phone and always have the latest updates.
If you're looking for a more multimedia focused phone then I think the Xperia X10 is a better bet. It has a larger screen, a superior camera for photos and video, and from what I can tell a better out of the box media experience. Anecdotally, video files that i've created (ripped DVDs and some 720p H.264 clips) work on my phone but don't work on my coworkers' Nexus One and EVO 4Gs. Go figure. We're still trying to figure out why. Just know that with Sony Ericsson, you're going to be a little behind on the updates since they have a custom interface. However, SE does a decent job of filling the gaps and providing a "better" than standard Android Donut (1.6) experience.
Both are solid phones that "just work" and you'll likely never have to "reboot" them as often as you would a WinMo phone.
if you live in a hot country don't buy it. My X10 reboots when i'm outside and temperature is 35 deg. Celsius.
If i'm using navigation it reboots after a while on even lower temperatures. (screen turned on seems to add a lot of heat)
I live in US, San Diego, it gets hot here in summer but I don't think hot weather will be a problem. Check your battery maybe it needs to be replaced.
As about Nexus 1 ...well overall design is too ugly for me. I like good looking phones and specs xD.
I guess I will be heading to LA as soon as I have a day off and check it out, already called one store they say they have it with Tmobile 3g bands.
Could't find any sellers in San Diego.
My vote is firmly in the X10 camp. I've been an HTC fan since their first Winmobile devices were released in 2002-2003(?) but this turned me over. My latest Android phone was a HTC Dream and I was looking at getting the Desire until I had a chance to play around with an X10.
What set this device apart, besides the design and feel, was the screen. Even though the Desire has an OLED the SE screen looked way better. The 4" 16:9 display is great, perfect for watching TV-shows on the go.
The interface can be annoying but I installed the ADW launcher and love it.
If you want a speedy device with tons of "teh sexy" then look no further.
thanks

LOL more smilies than
Seems like the x10 has been rooted too.Definately a good buy.
the X10 got potential. Despite the rooted custom roms or the official updated rom from SE it is a good phone. Although some ppl complains about the issues right now, but it will eventually be solved as time goes by, and the X10 will be really an Kick-ass phone!
Definitely a nice device. When root comes for us, it will be propably the best
Have the phone, how about the update?
Done,
have it in my hands now.
It is a X10i (I am on Tmobile)with .14 firmware.
Quick question for updating with decrypted roms:
Mine says Country: Belgium, Customized. .14 firmware.
So i guess its factory unlocked?
Can I safely update with
X10i - Shipped
WWE_R1FB001---this one....?
Will it brand to the firmwares provider or how it works?
There is no guide and/or explanation about this firmwares and for what phones are they(branded or unbranded/unlocked!?)
Pls anyone would like to update immediately so I can some apps.
Thanks

Easiest thing to do would be to install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) and run it. It ought to give you the latest FW available for your phone. If you're still stuck on an old FW after that I'd look into the mods but there's a fair chance you don't have to.
And considering it's ease of use it's a simple thing to just give it a go before investigating further.
HIH
I updated the firmware to .16 with the guide from esato.com and after that i tried the local decrypted rom r1fb001 latest anyway and when tring to flash it would give me some java error like unknown command java - javaflash.jar.
I have java installed.
After all i used Omni tool with their firmware customized and succeded to latest r1fb001.
Thanks anyway.

Buying a smartphone :)

Hi all.
I hate my HTC Tattoo. I can't wait to change it.
The main problem is money, but I've found someone who will buy my Tattoo for a reasonable price, and I've found a guy who will pay me to set up a website for him, so I'm considering changing phone. I'll stick to android, and I was thinking of getting the Nexus One, because it doesn't have all the Sense or Motoblur junk so it gets the updates faster.
Do you have any ideas about where to buy it (or any other decent android smartphone) cheap. I've found a place where they sell it unlocked for 508 euros (635US$), but I'm sure you can find it cheaper. I live in Italy, so it has to be a place that sends stuff worldwide.
Also, if anyone is thinking of selling a N1 or another android phone (or knows someone who is), could you please tell me by PM or comment?
Thanks,
David

Why, man?
Coz HTC not releasing SW-updates?
Tattoo is a bargain at its price (~300USD), I consider.
I started hatting the tattoo too and I'm attempting to sell it now.
And yah its basically cuz I'm tired of 1.6 and there seems there is never going to be a fully working 2.x rom.
Well I think there are some Roms which are even better than official 2.1 that you can just install but surely nexus one is better choice. I love my tattoo even tho I used that phone as a spare only bad thing abt tattoo is small screen that's all but again it fits really cool than any other smart phone out there and If you just work arnd lil bit with roms and install market patched than I think no need to upgrade
Note : there are some pplz who are buying old phones I will send link when I come home and also u can buy nexus one from eBay in abt 350 to 425 USD
Yeah, no S/W updates, but also bad camera, screen, reception...
Thanks symond
EDIT: Oh, almost forgot: no 3D Graphics -.-'
I'm out of the Tattoo scene. Traded it for another phone.
yeah ive played with the tattoo, and i did NOT like it at all!

Xperia X12 Arc vs. Desire HD

The new SE Xperia Arc looks good.
Opinions on which one you would choose...
Personally I will never again buy a Sony Ericsson phone. Ever! Not after the debacle that was the X10.
They have a horrible habit of messing the software up in a big way and then taking ages - if at all - to fix it.
Nah, I'll definitely stick with my DHD I think
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
i got rid of my SEx10 for my DHD, now the wait for the 2.1 upgrade for my X10 was well worth it but , i think im going to stick to my DHD for the time being as the ARC would be good should you want an upgrade
Sony means good hardware and horrible software support. By the time Gingerbread was releasing they were finally getting around to updating the X10 to Eclair.
If you are ok with being stuck with the same software version for the next two years I'd say go Sony.
Sent from my performance enhanced Desire HD.
The Arc looks like a great handset but Sony (along with Samsung and LG in my experience) seem to have a history of failing to support their phones as soon as new ones come out... so personally I'd rule it out because of that.
Still, who needs manufacturer support when we have XDA
I had to get rid of my X10 too, i would not recommend getting an SE phone, at least not at launch.
The x10 was a joke. (Although still the best looking phone ive seen to date)
i have to be honest the Arc was tempting me. It looks absolutely awesome, it has HDMI out which i really wish the DHD could have, and it has this really hyped up camera technology which is great for low light photos i hear (SE cameras are great in general). Also people are praising the screen which is using bravia technology.
But alas, sony's really poor support with software, and thir god aweful ui on their phones is keeping me from getting one. I hear the X10 still doesnt have custom roms on it yet. that's another major drawback for it imo.
I'll be sticking with HTC for now.
Having only just got rid of the x10, i feel sony was a really big let down....custom roms are only just turning up, unlocking the bootloader looks to be very long way away. and the kernel which at this mo can still not be flashed and is holding what could of been a great phone back. Not many Devs working on the handset so it will take longer.
Sony are ment to have good cameras but the x10 was ok ish..

Exactly what I was thinking.
I mean don't get me wrong the X12 looks amzing and feature packed but after what happened to the X10 I don't think I can trust SE again with software updates.
There have been a lot of cool phones been announced at CES but tbh no other manufacturer has made a phone that I personally would want to buy, i'm stuck on HTC! I am really happy with the desire HD!
The main reason for xda exsisted was HTC phones, no other phones gets as much support dev wise, that why I always buy HTC, of course they great hardware and experience. Samsung come a close 2nd these days.
But Sony Arc and even LG Star might look like great phones but with no community support, they are dead in my eyes.
The only other phone I'd consider which isn't HTC or Sammy would be Atrix the new moto phone, but then again moto in Europe has poor support, and they tend have stupid bootloader.
i have a contract up in april and i think i will get the LG star the screen looks so good and a good battery music to my ears
also just incase you think i am anti HTC i have DHD my wife has desire and my little girl has my old HD2 running cm7 gingerbread on nand.
i dumped my x10 after their growing debate on multi touch and its poor battery life
ever since i gotten my DHD i'm so pleased i finally got HTC sense + the HTC keyboard that i didn't need to hack to get
don't think i'll switch back unless the arc has a better battery, i'm not too pleased with my DHD's battery
My wife will be getting the Arc on release as if she got a DHD she would always be confusing hers for mine (as she tends to lose hers a few times a day!).
I'm looking forward to having a play on it. I doubt very much it'd be worth an upgrade from a DHD, but for people on a Desire or below it might be worth a shout. Wife is still on a Hero, so should be a nice big upgrade for her.

Especially true if she isn't an uber geek like most of us are. Normal people aren't overly concerned about being stuck on, say Eclair, if Eclair is providing for them the functionality they require.
However if you know about these forums and frequent them I will bet money you are not a normal user so in that case the X12 is still a bit of a gamble for reasons already discussed. I for one am confident that we will get official Gingerbread with HTC sense this quarter and it wouldn't surprise me if the Desire got it in short order too.
As for X12 users they may well be stuck on Gingerbread forever. That wouldn't be a bad thing because its hard fault Gingerbread it feels like the coming of age for Android to me but when Honeycomb comes I will want it even if the new features don't change the way I use my phone on a daily basis, only because I am a geek and want new features to play with.

Yeah, exactly. She won't even let me root her phone so I can put FroYo on it! She even refused to put the OTA to 2.1 on until I begged her as it would fix the things she was moaning about!
So I think the Arc will probably be ideal for her. I'm sticking to my S-OFF, Rooted DHD though
There is a video of the arcs UI in action in engadget and let's just say Sony is still bad with software it looks very slow and lags a bit in the video. I guess don't might work it out before release but the if the x10 is any thing to go buy then I would advise to stay away from the arc.
Imo Sony and any compact for that matter would sell loads more units if they would just put stock android builds on their devices as it stands only HTC sense seems decent and even then I'd prefer stock

I will not buy a SonyEricsson any time soon again...
I have my X10 lying in a drawer only as a toy, and spare phone...
The fact that Sonyericsson is lightyears behind HTC with firmware and other software, and the fact that they abandon a device like the flagship x10 after only 8 month on the marked, speak for it self...
And when they say that the new ARC is 4 times faster than the old x10, they hide the fact that the x10 also could be more than 4 times faster with optimized and new firmware...! the xda devs have proved that already...
Sonyericsson say they never will update the x10 to android 2,3 or even to 2,2, as they say that the users will gain nothing from that...
So x10 will be stuck on android 2,1...
And ARC users need to expect the same will happen to them also, don't expect to get newer firmware than what you buy the phone with...
The ARC don't even have dualcore, that many other manufacturs are planning to send out now...
I will personal NOT buy it, I would look at the LG X2 or wait for HTC to send out new handsets...
Buy a Sonyericsson and expect to get ****ed by them...
..

Never buy or wait for a smartphone from SE. it is simply not worth it.
they promise you whatever you want to hear/read but they fail to deliver in all categories. i bought a p990i and and xperia-x1 and the story is always the same: first they announce a model, then they move the release over and over again up to 6-12 months. they rarely make more then 1 update/hotfix. they fail to upgrade the OS in a reasonable time (if they even consider it). they drop support on phones pretty fast.
service, support and updates: FAIL
i did observe this on: p990i, p1, x1, x10 ...
they even released android 1.6 phones in the US after most other companys switched to frojo ...
-QuadWord
Dual cures core phones are not exciting me much at all. They are worthless until there is an Android os which is optimized for them, and apps won't benefit until they are optimized for dual core.
Just like when the first 64 bit desktop cpu came out. Most people were still using 32 bit os on them until very recently because most software was and still is 32 bit anyway.

[Q] Atrix VS Incredible S

I just got the HTC Incredible S a week ago and while I was checking local ads online I saw that someone is willing to trade his Atrix for my HTC.
The Atrix specs seems to be great because of the Tegra 2 but then again the screen brightness and colors seems to be washed out compared to the Incredible Super-LCD. Also the Motoblur crap turns me off but either Sense or Motoblur it doesn't really matters because I use Launcher Pro. I know that the Atrix can be rooted and the Incredible can't (at least not when it's S-ON). I want to be able to use custom ROMS and be able to update to Gingerbread.
How is the Atrix on day to day use? How is the screen? Can we remove the crap that comes with the phone so it actually feels like a dual core? I really like my HTC and I don't want to make a bad move...

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Atrix has a higher resolution. More internal memory as well. 1930 mAH battery compared to the 1400. We'll get 1080p someday.
One thing to consider is the Atrix having an encrypted and locked bootloader.
i'd like to continue on this discussion... although not exatly the same situation...
i need to upgrade my htc legend with BELL and i have the choice of Atrix or the Incredible S...
Coming previously form HTC Touch where i first experienced Windows Mobile computing, the ability of changing ROMS, then ported ANdroid ROMS which imo the best experience of them all with all the hacking/mod abilities...
So now my only criteria is the phone must be an Android phone... because it has such a large user based and hacking community in general...My current HTC Legend, is a great phone especially after the Froyo update, very responsive but its lacking the storage capcity...
This is why i'm changing my HTC Legend which is still stock ... i read about rooting it but it was a bit too complicated to root it without going through hoops and loops . So I didnt bother... and im running out of space
I've read a few reviews about incredible and atrix... and although the atrix looks superior on paper... i wasnt impressed by the motoblur and the few videos i saw...
The Motorola Atrix hardware is futureproof but only if Motorola decide to release new upgrades to take advantage of the hardware... i heard some bad things that based on history, i shouldnt bet on getting upgrades... is this true? If i'm not getting the upgrades from Motorola, this is why i think the hacking community plays an important role to get the best out of this wonderful piece of hardware ( like the HTC Touch in its time ). Apart from the wonderful beedfed up hardware ... i havent seen anything good... in fact i saw a few threads about rebooting problems, issues...etc and bloatware , not being able to install non market apk and motoblur ( which i only saw in the 1st generation motorola blur in the android 1.5 phone cant recall the name of the phone)
The Incredible S seems to be a more stable phone and i personally like the SENSE UI and HTC in general. I havent seen a lot of negative reviews or problems. COming form the HTC family, i tend to trust it more than Motorola. The 8MP cam is a plus but the inability to root is sad... at least some dev are working on it ...
bottomline, i can live without rooting the IS in the short term or with a rooted stable Atrix which i can customize and change the UI to put something similar to the SENSE UI ( weather and launcher). is there such a thing?

Is the Phone worth its money?

Hi guys,
Ive been actively looking for a phone for about one week now and in that time I browsed through thousands of sites and reviews and stuff for every possible phone ever.
Finally I ended up with the Droid Pro.
What was important to me is that the Phone was decently fast, had a QWERTZ keyboard and Andoid on-board.
From the first look I thought the Droid Pro perfectly fits these criteria - maybe despite the fact it has Android 2.2 instead of 2.3.
However before buying it I would like to ask you whether buying this phone would be a good idea or not. Are there any complains about it, any things you like or do not like at all, helpful things, useless things? Tell me how you feel about it, and tell me as much as you can.
It would help me a lot.
Many thanks to you guys!

What do you mean for the money? If the phone is less than $100 off contract then I'd say yes, otherwise I'd personally say no. It's not really a fast phone, but fast enough. The screen resolution is horrible, but all Android candy-bar qwerty's appear to the same issue.
I got one for my wife when it first came out and it was a huge improvement over BB for her. She loved it. Now is is starting to show her age. I loaded Apex custom rom on it and it has a few issues. Now I can't find a way to get it back to stock. haha, but that is my fault, not the fault of the phone
Well at this time the best price for this phone i could get was about 170€.
But Im surprised to hear the phone is slow, why that and what exactly do you mean by 'slow'?
Most of the newer phones often have a hardware which is even worse than the motorola's - 800Mhz and 256mb RAM is pretty standard, at least for the prices below 200€ - the motorola has specs that are pretty high for a phone I always thought.
In conclusion would that mean that any other phone with a 3,1" screen and the same specs is also slow?

I don't deal with candy bar qewrty's a lot so I don't have a lot to compare with, but Android can be a little hard on the system, so it can take some resources to run smoothly. However, that also means you can do a lot more with it, because you can get all the Android apps.
You're not going to get any more updates with the phone from Motorola, and I'm not sure how much the modding community cares about the phone. What other phones are you looking at?
Other alternatives would be the Sony Ericsson Xperia mini Pro (SK17i) - although Im a little concerned about it being too tiny.
Then there is the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro and the HTC Chacha, but what makes me a little sceptical about these is the fact that the keyboard takes a lot more space than the display.
I also considered buying a HTC Desire S or a Desire HD but that would be at least 200€, sadly ...
If it's under 100euro then get it, well I guess all german phone are european phone which are GSM-ready. The only annoying cons is the low resolution of the droid pro's screen, which makes pictures feel like low-quality but in reality aren't. (and low legacy status if that counts - if only you prefer a lil bit of "hacking" here and there ) Otherwise dont hesitate to get it.
Have you considered Moto Backflip ? (the Cliq/dext has the same specs but lacks flash) Milestone isn't that bad either 130mb memory sure is a problem but it has a big dev community standing behind/below xD
If you have friends in the US ask them for a craiglist's phone Mine got me one xD
Thanks guys,
I just bought a droid pro plus, although Im not sure there is much support for this phone here on xda-developers...
It's really the only option for a portrait qwerty.
Since ICS typing on touchscreen is easier. I've managed to adapt because of this.
The thing is with the XT610 is that Motorola make it hard to hack and being rarer community support is that much less.
A straight comparision to a GalaxyS1: very similar but the i9000 has loads more ROM options etc.
If I had to have a blackberry form factor then DroidPro is the only way to go... but unfortunately it could be better
