New Official Facebook app on Android!!

Guys i am hoping the wonderful devs/mods/members of xda can help me.
i have created a group on facebook to try and get the site to listen to our pleas.
The android OS is now number 2 in market share behind Symbian and yet we have possibly the most appalling app ever.
you cant use the new Places feature, you cant chat, you cant even tag photos! (something you have been able to do since facebook started)
this to me just doesnt seem right. we deserve a decent app. i know that a lot of the devs on here could make a better app but why should they? the Fruit based phone that shall not be named has had a good app from the beggining and has the new Places added to it straight away.
so i am asking that anyone from the site who loves facebook and android and wants to see them paired correctly please come and join us at:

Update: as of the 3rd of november the facebook app has been updated to include the places and groups. great. but it has still not focused on the basics.
Update: as of the 14th december they have added chat!! WHOO HOO!!! and push notification for chat. this is fantastic. a real step in the right direction. however i would like to see the choice of push for other things like comments and tags. Oh and still NO PHOTO TAGGING!!!
Photo tagging has been a part of facebook almost from the beggining. It is the feature that everyone uses and its exclusion from the android app is the most appalling oversight. if you take a picture of your friends when you are out and then upload it to facebook you want to be able to tag them in it. whats the point otherwise?

stericson (the man involved in the latitude stress test and many apps as RT this on twitter for me as well.

joined and voted as well on both areas.
Personally I stopped using any of the facebook apps since they seem so poor in function. Been using Bloo 1.5 since its release. Hopefully facebook and the great team of devs here can come up with something more positive in functionality.

IMHO ... this entire app should be rethought ...
It appeared they were going for the same interface the "official twitter" app uses ... but it's a #fail implementation.
I vote for complete redesign ... that's just me though.

I think this is the biggest complaint. It should be a self contained app. The next big problem is chat our lack there of, and picture tagging our lack there of.

EDIT: as of today (7/11) google has opened up the 'official invites' and it is unnecessary for you to download the greasemonkey scripts at the moment. HOWEVER that does not mean this will not change, if you receive a official invite from me then you are pretty much good to go, but if i share a post with you on g+ it will include directions on what to do. pls press thanks
enter your email in the spreadsheet, i will not accept in thread emails. chances are this will not work without the greasemonkey script because google fixed the 'trick' of just invited people by sharing a post with them. other instructions below. please press the thanks button i would appreaciate it
Once you receive the email click on it and it should lead you to a page that says join+ (the join+ button won't work unless u install the scripts below, read on)

VERY IMPORTANT READ ON!!!!
Once you've received your email, open up firefox (or chrome) and install the GreaseMonkey extension ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/ ) / add-on. Then download this script http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=645927&d=1309858807 (from this thread if you want to read up on it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15339812). Extract it from the zip file.
Open a new tab in Firefox, drag the extracted script into the window.
Opt to install the script. Go to your invite email (in firefox where the script is now running)
Click on one of the comment links
It will take you to a page with a red button that says "join+". You may try that link, but if it doesn't work, return to the page with the red button. The script will keep trying to join every 5 seconds.
- you need greasemonkey (firefox) or tampermonkey (for chrome)
if you don't know what it is click here

i am aware, i think it sometimes work sometimes doesnt. google opens it up for periods at a time... right now when google opens it up you will have a invite but its all about timing

Google+ and the XDA Circle

I have made a G+ Account called "XDA Circle". If we can get all XDA members to search and add that account to a circle. It would more or less create a global group. I'm thinking it would be an easy way to keep our own XDA circles up-to-date. Simply search for the "XDA Circle" profile, dbl-click into it to view who has circled the "XDA Circle" account. Then you can easily find XDA Members that you have not added yet.
I have no plans to use or make posts from that profile. In theory, it should grow on its own as more XDA members get online with Google+.

So true! Also notice how the majority of those asking here on XDA are newly registered and have very few posts. Seems a little suspicious to me.
That said: I will send invites, but only if you have been an XDA member for at least 1 month or have over 100 constructive posts. My invites will go to the real community, not these "n00bs" just trying to get a free ride.

I would love an invite but can't face the idea of begging for one on the forum...

Hey OP, have any clue how the privacy settings work on google+? I have a crazy ex stalker g/f and need most my stuff other than profile pic and name private : /
Oh I should also say that google+ is freaking awesome and IMO way better than facebook! I am just trying to figure it all out right now...

How will this work? Will I see the posts that user x makes to the circle or just one guy?

There is a place to block users. I have blocked anyone yet, but surely it is possible.

Basically, the way it works is you create a circle like XDA. Then you find and add people to your XDA circle. Once added, you will see their posts as well as all the other people in that circle. Then you have the option to view the posts of everybody you have in all circles, or you can select single circle at a time to filter out the rest.

I would love an invite as well...been on xda awhile...dont post much mostly just reading lol....dont wanna throw my mixed knowledge in and confuse people lol

Video calls: Phone 2 Computer now possible with 2.3.4 Update and Google Talk. I tried it this morning and it worked fine. The person on the computer end just needs to be signed into their Gmail account in their browser with the proper plugins, and of course a camera and microphone. It's under chat on the left side of your Gmail page. On the phone end, just open Talk, tap on your contact, it will be the top one, and make sure you put a check mark in the box that says "Allow video and voice chats". That's it, enjoy video calls on your Atrix now.

Yes! I have a TF circle and it has been very useful for member collaboration in the Hangout mode. We had a good time last week when we were all waiting for the 3.2 update. It came down OTA as we were all on and were able help each other out. Let me know, I'll start my circle now. [email protected]
