[Q] Will 3.1 have ad hoc support - Acer Iconia A500

I am just wondering if anybody knows if 3.1 will have support for ad hoc. I currently have an iPhone 3gs and would like to tether my Iconia to when not at home. I have read that if I rooted it and did this and that it may work but I really do not want to be doing this as would like to just keep things stock. Knowing my luck if I tried to do it I would brick it.
So just wondering if this may be something that support gets added for in the future.

pdanet
Check on the app store for the I pad and the web if youbdo not want to root.I know it works with android to android and android to windows.I also think it will now do Ios to android. Check the PDA net website.if no support send them email.you can also root change the ad-hoc file and permissions then unroot.
Good luck

Acer Iconia Tab A500

First of all, I would like to request a section on this tablet, funny how the Transformer even got one when is not released yet.
Second of all, I'm quite a noob on the subject matter. But to all the A500 owners out there, any idea how to get the tethering to work?
I have the Atrix 4G rooted, and for some reason my A500 can't pick up the signal. Any ideas? (I read something about the "infrastrusture" and "ad-hoc" things, but not sure about it)
Thanks
i think so!!!please have a section on this tablet
I'm having the same problem tethering my A500 to my T-Mob G1.
You're correct in saying that it's down to the difference between Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure Wireless Networking. Some phones tether using Ad-Hoc, some use Infrastructure. The Iconia A500 only supports Infrastructure. Hopefully it won't be too long before Paul O'Brien et al can root it and we can get a custom kernel with support for Ad-Hoc networks.
Also, +1 for Acer Iconia A500 Forum please!
colbur87 is working on it.. maybe you guys can follow the thread:

If you have root then you should be able to replace the wpa_supplicant file with the one from this thread like we did on the Xoom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
You can use Root explorer rather than ADB if you want.
First you want to turn off your wifi. I have used the ADB method a couple of times but I find it easier to use Root explorer. Save the file to your memory, Copy it using root explorer, navigate to the system/bin folder and click mount R/W then paste the file into the folder replacing the original (make sure to make a backup!) then long hold on the file and view permissions, check all the boxes in the first two columns and the first 2 in the last column. (chmod 775) You can then restart your wifi and enjoy ad-hoc networks (no reboot needed.)
I've done this a couple of times on my Xoom and it works great
Another vote for Iconia A500 forum !!
Tethering my inspire to my iconia here with no problems. I tested using a non-encrypted adhoc network.

another vote..plus im having problems with setting up exchange activesync on my a500..TouchDown works fine though..any one having the same sorta problem?
Thanks, I've been looking into this method too.
But we are currently still waiting for the Acer Tab to be rooted. Hopefully will be soon.

I have the same problem. Does not let me setup an exchange account only pop3 and Imap. I thought that's standard with all Android version since 2.0 or so? Any ideas?
Thanks

Same here on that. Touchdown works fine, but no native Exchange support...
Inspire's Wifi Hotspot is Infrastructure mode, and works for me.
AND GIVE US A FORUM!!!!!!
Please...
Just got mine yesterday. Obvioulsy their honeycomb release still needs polishing. Also upset there is no exchange support out of the box. +1 for Iconia forum!
Just got mine a little while ago!
Yes, a forum for us, please.
Got mine yesterday in anticipation the Asus launch would leave many (including myself) with out one. From the research I have done, Exchange is not supported natively in Honeycomb at all, coming in a future update. You can, however, use K-9 Mail which is working flawlessly for me and free in the market.
+ 1.5 (I am a big guy) for the Acer Iconia dedicated forum.
Got my A500 yesterday and already like it infinitely better than the xoom I returned shortly after launch!
++A500 dedicated formum... pretty pretty please!
Can't wait until we can crack this sucker open!
Yes please, give us a forum. I think this tablet has a lot going for it.

[Q] Android 3.1 & Proxy Settings

So I just got my asus transformer the other day, and coming from an avid iPhone/iOS background, I feel a bit let down. In no way am I a fanboy, but theres issues im having with this android device that have never been as such with iOS.
Mainly, proxy settings! I was fortunate enough to get my device a day before the 3.1 update came out, and the update brought with it native support for manually setting the proxies.
unfortunately, these settings dont work. I set it up to work with my workplaces proxy server and even though the info is there, they dont work. not only that, they only apply to the browser. Two huge issues!! Now most people would just discard the device and go back to what theyre used to, but I want to give this device a chance before I (possibly) return it to the store.
Are there any apps for 3.1 that set a UNIVERSAL proxy setting? Something that not only will work, but also apply the proxy settings to youtube, the market place, and anything else that runs on the device. Before the update came out, I tried using AnyCut to setup a shortcut to the hidden proxy settings, but even then it was shoddy at best. Half the time id click on the link and it wouldnt even open up the proxy settings page. (note, Half. it did work sometimes)
Essentially, if I cant get this thing to run at work, its going back and will be exchanged for an Acer Iconia running win7. I really hope theres a solution here!
Yeah, I'm quite disappointed with the proxy support in they included in the update. If they couldn't apply it to everything, at least update the core apps to use it. I mean, I can't even get my email over the proxy.
i used to use TransProxy on my phone and it worked great.
you may not be happy about a honeycomb tablet, but a Windows 7 tablet wil absolutely drive you mad ..
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
so I searched for TransProxy in the market place. and found something called ProxyDroid.
tried it, what the hell, and it works Better. I still cant get the facebook app / mobile facebook site to work. but its a step ahead of the silly native proxy support. hmmm never had to go through any of this crap on my iPhone. grr

Whatbare the benefits of rooting my acer?

my EVO was rooted until the last ota. That was great but what benefit is there for my tablet ? My phone could wifi and I could get rid of ads but what extra can my tablet do when rooted.
Main reasons I rooted my tablet was so I could watch netflix on my tablet and so I can hook up my 500gb hdd and access all my movies and pictures on my tablet.
I've been looking at installing a custom rom but still content right now with being stock rooted. I'm sure I'll break into it soon but for now those are 2 big reasons I rooted. Not to mention its rediculously easy to do so, so its like why not lol

Word for word.
Word.
netflix
how are you running Netflix? I am rooted and Netflix will not stream on my Iconia.
Reasons to root a500.
1. Able to edit the 'wpa_supplicant' file in system/bin to get the a500 to connect to my ad hoc network.
2. Able to edit the 'libnvomx.so' file in system/lib to get Netflix working.
3. Able to use any program that needs Superuser permissions.

Didn't 3.2 add native USB host support? If that is the case, you won't need to root to access your hard drive once they release the 3.2 update.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not about the hard drive (my FAT32 drives work just fine). It's about NTFS filesystem which is not supported out of the box hence the rooting.
So to make it short... I doubt that we'll see any change on this front.
Rooting allows you to use apps like AddFree Android. It kills in-add apps

no root for 3.2,no ad hoc for 3.2...

i am using android 3.2 now,but the root software for 3.1 is no useful for 3.2.
i like to use a lap-top to share internet by ad-hoc function ,but if the system is not root the ad-hoc will not be added ,right?
Life sux without root! But the devs here are cleaver im sure they will find a solution pronto!
In the mean time you can look for software that turns your laptop into a AP. Like this one:
http://www.connectify.me/
I haven't tried it but from the description it looks promising (and it's free... well the basic version at least). One thing though - it's for win7 but I'm sure you can find something similar for your OS (whatever it is).

It's not about the sharing of the internet connection but the way the iconia connects to your laptop. Simply put in the wifi standard there are two modes - infrastructure and ad-hoc. In the first all clients connect to the AP and transmit data to it only. The other uses direct links between the clients that need to transmit data between them. In the current scenario they look the same (data is transmitted between the iconia and the laptop) but unfortunately iconia can't connect to ad-hoc networks without modification that requires root (which we don't have) and when you create a wlan in windows it's ad-hoc.
I honestly did not know about the downloading of the software - just googled "windows access point software" and came to an article about this one. EDIT: I've just followed the download link and it starts downloading the installer. Not that much of a surprise when you click something called "download". I prefer to get the job done rather than answering to "are you sure you want to download the file?", "are you absolutely positive to that?", "you don't seem too exited about it, maybe you should download it tomorrow?", "do you know what you are doing?", "does your wife know that you want to download it?", "in the current political situation, do you think that it is wise to download this file?" and so on...

Maybe the A100 3.2 root technique works?
Connectify is stable and works by turning your laptop into an actual WAP...
I have been using it for over a year at many hotels that charge for one WIFI and then the laptop puts it back out as its own separate WIFI to all of my other devices... (an HP iPAQ, an iPOD Touch 3, another laptop, the Acer A500 and the Dell Streak 7)
I even used it as a stand alone Hot Spot to do a survey for a major company warehouse situation...
And now they have a version for XP and Vista (I have not tried these yet)
Ted...
Im attempting the A100 Technique right now (as soon as I get JDK / ANDROID SDK) installed. I will update this thread to say if it worked. I thought I read somewhere it didn't but I'm bored. LOL

IIRC we have a newer bootloader in our version of 3.2 than the A100 has. SPCIIW!
Yeah that was a waste of time there's even a reply in the a100 forum saying their ADB root technique doesn't work. I can't chmod the su file to make it executable or even dump in the /system/xbin folder. Was good practice though, hadn't really used adb before. Really pisses me off that Acer did this. It would be like Microsoft not letting you be an admin to your own windows installation. I'm sure the very capable devs out there will crack it (hopefully) lol.

[Q][DEV][Webtop Experts] Webtop...Ubuntu, Debian Vs. Real world

Hi,
I have been doing some research and I just hit a wall and can't go any further.
I work for a software company that builds it's own products and has a lot of clients.
I've always liked the idea of webtop but never got around to even look at it as a laptop replacement till now upto an extent.
I installed Debian on webtop and tried to get vpn to work and failed miserably. Not to mention I haven't touched linux in 10 years.
What I need to keep webtop/lapdock:
Clean/Lightweight environment with fully functional browser.
Ability to remote desktop.
Ability to connect to vpn on clients' side and remote into servers to fix small issues.
Ability to mess with the portal we have to update quick changes for clients.
I know you can't do it all out of the box.
I installed Debian but got stuck on installing Cisco Anyconnect.
Installed openconnect but can't connect as it says no tun/tap driver found.
gnome-panel doesn't work but I can live with webtop panels but my OCD kills me having firefox and iceweasel both.
Iceweasel can't have flash and plugins as I could not find any plugins for armel.
All plugins are for i386 or amd64.
My simple question is:
Can I do all this from this webtop or I should just keep carrying laptop.
Can I carry lapdock when I go for vacation and stuff to not worry about a $1500 laptop and just carry $200 lapdock so I can still do something if sh*t hits the fan.
I think I wrote a long enough story to give you guys a basic understanding.
Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.
If lapdock can't replace laptop for basic needs of a software developer then I might as well just sell it and move to Droid 2 Global.
:flameSuitOn: just in case
Thank you in advance for your time and effort.
I just don't think the webtop idea is quite there yet. Im personally in the IT industry and tried to use the atrix as my primary device while being on the road and simply failed. I was able to get gnome-panel working amongst other things but its far too sluggish. Try logmein and see what happens lol. The concept is truely amazing but that's as far as it goes.
Now if all you need to do is vpn, log into routers/switches etc it will do the job. Its much easier then pulling out a laptop and waiting for windows to boot. But anything extensive, Java or Flash based is impossible.
Just my. 02 cents.
It's a little difficult to try to use the lapdock as your primary device. I personally use it as my laptop at college (i have a desktop in my room) I can rdp into my desktop just fine, and access all programs from there, but the experience is definitely a bit laggy. You can try to get it a bit faster if you overclock, but that's a whole other can of worms. Firefox 6 runs, and can use most add-ons...
Personally, I might look into something like the ASUS Transformer Prime, once the dev scene there gets into gear. I think if they could get a full ubuntu (or any linux distro) running, it would be a far better experience on Tegra 3. But then you wouldn't have a smartphone...
Why don't you try it out? See how well it works if you try and use it as your daily work computer for a couple of weeks. I know other's have installed pretty much every ARM compiled program for ubuntu, including gnome panel, so it wouldn't hurt to try.
Faux updated his kernal to use zram this is supposed to help speed up webtop once activated
Just thought I'd add that in

Sorry to hear all of you failing with the Lapdock...
In my case it's been a great and convenient alternative. I work as a Network Administrator.
All I need is a browser, internet access (3G or wifi) and LogMeIn account (the free one works great).
I remote into my corporate computers and servers to do most if not all of my work. No need to vpn as before since all resources are available once I get on my corporate computer via LogMeIn. Just install LogMeIn on your main computer, secure it and you are done!
There's actually no need to mod webtop or add any other feature.

I am with you on this. I am a server/desktop engineer and do some of the same tasks you speak of. it works great for a little bit I need. I am running the debian mod and the LXTerm is epic for what I need. I also use Citrix from my phone fullscreen and this also works really well if I am in a pinch and need access to our proprietary junk. I think if the CM webtop ever gets setup, it will be more of a linux box than a slim halfbaked ubuntu that moto uses(im hoping). All in all though, it works for what I need with my other tools. I also found I can use app "VPN Widget" over the 4G connection and I hook straight in to our network no citrix needed. It wont work for the wifi, but that is a limitation of the app. I agree, at times its slow for some flash based things, but really flash is a RAM whore anyhow. I also noticed a quirk with java not being installed, but I may try to tackle that this afternoon
Thansk Rayan, I thought about Logmein but I just think it's kind of slow if you want to do something quick and get out, you know?
LXTerm? What does that do?
I tried installing Cisco Anyconnect VPN and it killed webtop, started again and wondering what other vpn would work like cisco anyconnect client.
I'm a sysadmin, and I have completely replaced my laptop with the ATRIX and its webtop. But we run Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop at work, so I mainly use webtop or the android receiver to connect to my hosted apps and desktops. For that purpose the ATRIX really is the nirvana phone.
