Just a thought that came to me...
I was perusing some old posts about when the g1 came out. It seems funny to me that since the launch of the g1 and android, the people that loves the iphone (fanboys -- trying not to be flaming here - lol), How many comments about how this phone is going to die out soon and what not. I think back when the iphone came out and that was only just over 2 years ago, and the g1 is now only 3 months shy of its birthday, how many people bashed this phone.
I love this phone and most people at work would love to have one, but they aren't on t-mobile. They like what the capabilities of this phone will become and then some. I think that they were wrong to get rid of the keyboard, I like being able to type and the screen and not half hidden by a vk.
I think that the prices on the market are such that it will also bring people this this system (not just the phones). With what is coming out from the various manufactures that are makikng android phones, i think about the fact that there is only 2 phones available from the iphone....
I wonder how dead is this phone? If this OS came in a flip phone (because that is what my wife wants), then I will be more than happy to give her one. All in all, I will stick with android, not because i am a "fanboy", but because I believe in the magic of opensource and helping one another is what being human is about.
So, one last comment before I put my drunk ass to bed, dollars to doughnuts, this'll be around for awhile. I like both phones, they are basically the same under all the glitter. But, hey, everyone has a choice.

The phone isn't dead, it's because T-Mobile doesn't really give a crap about their phones enough to actually market them. They also don't care about you, the consumer. Honestly, all they care about is their bottom line.
Look at any call center. Many call centers constantly run competitions for CSR's to win some widget. Sell x amount of this brand of phone and win a prize.
Know what that means? When a consumer calls in wanting a Blackberry (or whatever), the CSR is going to do whatever they can to convince you to buy phone brand x because they want to win the widget, not because they give a damn about what phone would best suite you.
Tmobile actively encourages this kind of crap and they should be ashamed.
Very true. Back in Jan someone I know went to tmo asking about the g1. The rep told him it sucks buy a blackberry, (the flip one.. pearl maybe? I dunno). That was the craziest thing I have ever heard. Bb > android? Is this guy high?.. lol needless to say he has since returned and purchased the g1 after talking to me. I just thought this to be insane.
So, im just wondering, does anyone else think the Incredible is dying? I was at Verizon yesterday (black friday) and the reps didnt even show customers the incredible, nor did anyone look at it. And there were about a good 20 customers who walked in the store and looked at the Droid section while I was there. Verizon doesnt really market the Incredible either. The only place where the Inc is alive is in the forums.
Forums are showing down the past month or so.. I dunno, like any phone product, it has it's 6-9 months of fame.
It may still have a legacy like G1 or N1..
I do not think so....It is still a solid device and those who know about it will find it. I do not see it going out but I do see that there is a FLOOD of devices on the market that the consumers are just overwhelmed with what to buy and which device is right. For my mother, this would be too much to process...
Let me add this I knew all about the DINC before I ever with the VZW to play with one and the knowledge of the salesman trying to tell me about the device was awful. If I had based my first experience on buying the device from him I would have walked away from the DINC. The salesman have a big play in it to know the devices and then know how to determine what the buyers wants & then find the right devices to show....other than pushing the newer devices that are now on the floor....

The biggest problem with the DINC is the battery life and originally availability due to AMOLED screens. I think the Droid X and Fasicinate took over for the DINC. I do like the phone but when you are up against SAMOLED and the battery life of Moto devices it is a tough sell.
After trying the droid 2 global for about a week it got returned for a dinc. Out of all the phones verizon offers this device is my favorite by far. It will have a long life albeit not a very hyped one.
Yeah, I mean I love it (the batter life and my battery door squeaking for no reason kind if ticks me off though ), but u almost want to get the original Droid (love cyanogen) for the build quality. I don't even care about the keyboard. But yeah, It sucks because the only HTC device anyone knows about is the evo. They really should really launch the Inc.

True, battery life kinda sucks, so get a bigger battery. But how many other phones are there out there with all of these ROM choices? Aren't the new phones coming out with locked bootloaders? When will the era of "s-off" Smartphones end? Personally, I think Verizon has seen enough, and they are going to put a stop to ROM hacking & flashing. Perhaps they have gotten smart about replacing bricked phones. If so, the Droid Incredible will be one of the last really decent hackable phones. Oh sure, you may be able to "root" your new phones, but just try to hack an ENCRYPTED bootloader sometime...so that you can flash your own ROM. I think the days of ROM flashing are coming to an end. That's why the Droid Incredible (with s-off) is never going to die.
Well that's what I mean, in xda and in the forums I think the incredible has a long time to go. But in the consumers mind, I feel like its a gonner. Which is a shame.
And if they keep locking boot loaders I might have to switch to webOS, if Palm is still alive by then.

Correct me if I am wrong, but, wasn't there a law passed recently that allowed consumers who purchased a phone the right to root/unlock/jailbreak it without voiding the warranty? I thought I read this somewhere but I may be mistaken. Also, I think it's a crime that we can't do what we want to the phones WE PURCHASED! If I'm paying $200 for the phone plus well over $100/month to use MY phone I should be able to root it if I want. Also, I'm not even rooted yet so I'm not biased by any means. I just think if you buy something it's yours and you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

The problem with tampering with it is obvious, people brick their phones. this of course causes verizon problems which is why they void the warranty. verizon shouldn't have to replace a phone for you because you messed with settings capable of rendering your phone useless. i'm rooted and all but that is just my opinion on it. you can do whatever you want but they aren't responsible for you messing up your own phone.
The law says that you have the rights to mess with your phone without being sued under the DMCA y the manufacturer for reverse engineering, decrypting, etc... the law does not guarantee you the ability or the access to do it, nor that the company has to fix what you broke during the process, just that it's no longer illegal for you to try.
The device has been out for 7 months. I honestly think that the fact that Verizon's still even advertising it is surprising. Normal "life" for a device like this is only a few months.
i think this too, if it wasnt for the AMOLED shortage, the inc could have surpassed any phone Verizon could offer. also, i agree with the fact that verizon doesnt advertise it as much as it should be, the phone has MUCH potential. i think its just verizon's fault :/
When I first got my Incredible a few months back, Verizon was ramping up their advertising campaign for the Droid X. At that time, I don't recall seeing any advertisements for the Inc (in any medium).
Now, all these months later, there are a few commercials for the Inc that I see playing fairly regularly on TV. I haven't paid enough attention to see if stores are also advertising it out front or not.
In any regard, it seems that Verizon is making a push for better public knowledge of this phone. Sure, it will eventually phase out like any other, but based on advertising, that doesn't seem to be the current trend.
I have two friends who recently (within the last two weeks) purchased Incs. One is a very educated consumer, the other barely can tell a phone from her shoes. Not sure what sold her on it, but it seems that they are still being 'pushed' to some degree.
My brother was in the Verizon store last week and commented that they were very short on Incredibles. The sales associate told him that they had recently been selling a lot of them.
Besides the TV ads, I realize that most of what I just said is completely anecdotal. Take it for what it's worth, but I think the Inc still has some time to go.
Of course, you could use all of my same points to make the opposite argument: that they are pushing them hard now so they can clear space for upcoming models (especially for the holiday season).
Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I saw a Best Buy Black Friday ad for the Inc.
My uncle came by the house a day or two ago showing off a brand new Inc he got that week.
Nearly every model has it's rise and fall, and I'm fine with that so long as there's a decent community for the DInc that we see advancements in roms and such. MIUI is what I use and it's picking up good theme developers now with the new theming system, so regardless if the phone is losing populatity, there's enough people to provide rich content for a while.

I can accept that story or some other form it. I mean, it is out in Europe and has been for some time. And they have been dropping new phones with 2.2 for a while now. Why wouldn't these A-holes release it in the States. Can't imagine they have been testing the firmware for the past 7 months.
I have the epic and our update got delayed too. I knew it had something to do some bs like this but why would they delay the epic update because it already has sprint 4g in it. They could be upgrading their wimax to lte or coming out with the bidder screen model with the super amoled plus screen and they will launch that with froyo and leave ours in the dust. I guess we will find out on the 3rd of feb at sprints special event

I thought maybe Samsung was going to just skip 2.2 and release a 2.3 update because Samsung is already running 2.3 on their Nexus S.
I was actually going to buy an Epic tomorrow.
But, if this article is true, I am going to "devalue" Samsung and not buy their product.

Honestly, this is probably true. I know this sucks, but companies like this value their earnings more than their customers. Those of us who have been eagerly awaiting Froyo are in the minority, and they know that most of the people who own these devices couldn't care less about it.
This will probably be the last Samsung phone that I will ever buy, I'd rather give my money to a company which values their customers and provides customers with timely information regarding updates and the like.
This reminds me of the initial warnings about previous samsung devices and the lack of updates when the epic first came out. Although this is the best sprint phone I have owned to date I still wonder if I should have taken those warnings a little more seriously!
Yes I heard complaints in the past about Samsung's poor phone support but I still got the Epic. Mostly because my old phone (HTC Touch) died and it was going to cost $100 for a replacement (thanks lame Sprint insurance). So I just decided to get a new phone and compared to the Evo, the Epic seemed like the much better option. After experiencing Samsung's greed and lack of support for their existing products, I'm going back to HTC next go round.

For my next phone I'm going to do exactly what I did with this phone. Find out what the best phone is.. check the phones out.. and go with the one that is the best. Right now, even after the Evo 4G Shift was released, the Epic and other Galaxy S phones are still the best phone. I have friends with the Evo, Droid X, MyTouch.. and I can safely say that I have the best phone. Those phones have 2.2, but I wouldn't THINK about switching to them. Do I want 2.2? Of course. I have it now thanks to custom roms but of course it kinda aggravates me that there is no official release of 2.2 yet. But that is ok. If I had a choice between a laptop with a Intel i3 running Windows 7 and a Intel i7 running Windows Vista (or even XP), I would take the i7.
In my opinion, company tactics will forever aggravate us users. Throwing around other company names like HTC as the company that will be this "knight in shining armor" will only dissappoint you in the future. I have had 3 HTC phones previously and without a doubt, I can say that they are definitely not beyond screwing their customers over. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it is right, but I'm saying that it is not uncommon. The day that these companies become non-profit organizations is the day you will see them put customers first.. I'm not holding my breath.

As Lee Corso would say, 'not so fast my friend.' Before I scooped my Epic, I had the HTC Touch (the original way old Vogue) and the ppc6700 (the silver brick) before that. I never had any issues with software other than crappy windows mobile but when it came to updates and/or support, I was happy. Hardware was on point as well. Samsung Galaxy has been a major disappointment for me having owner various Samsung products and knowing that their hardware is excellent. Still think the Epic is terrific. Just disappointed at all the troubles that customers have experienced across the entire Galaxy lineup.

If true, this shows how completely and utterly out of touch Samsung's executives are with reality.
First of all, the whole theory that a 2.2-Vibrant(non-4G) would "devalue" the 4G. EVEN IF the only difference between the old and new Vibrant were the front camera and 4G, how many users likely to notice or care about whether or not the current Vibrant has 2.2 would *honestly* choose to buy the old model instead of the new one, even if it were a $50 difference between the two? People who buy $50 phones or wait months to get an old model on closeout for "free" with 2-year contract aren't the people who buy phones like the Epic, Vibrant, and the rest of the Galaxy S family. People in "our" category might ******* about a $50 difference... but we'll pay it anyway, because we know that if we don't, we'll be miserable and regret it daily for the next year or two.
Ditto, for customers who already own a Vibrant. In the entire United f***ing States, there *might* be 10,000 Vibrant owners who'll dump one and buy a Vibrant4G at full retail just to get 4G and/or the front camera. And I'll bet that a hefty subset of that group are T-Mobile employees whose "full" cost (after employee discount) is roughly what the rest of us would pay for a subsidized phone with contract, anyway. Now, having satisfied that group... how many more existing Vibrant customers do they REALLY think they're going to get by withholding 2.2 from owners of older Vibrants? Especially considering the abundance of custom ROMs.
The rationale becomes even more absurd when you consider the case of withholding 2.2 from Epic4G owners. I'm sure if you combed America hard enough, you might find a few Epic4G owners who'd dump it, pay the ETF to Sprint, switch to T-Mobile, and buy a Vibrant4G... but scratch a bit deeper, and I'd bet a major body part that the overwhelming majority of THAT group consists of users who probably wanted to switch anyway, and the existence of the Vibrant4G was more of an enabling excuse and rationale than an actual *reason*.
Companies like Samsung just don't seem to "get it". Consumers might chuck a $25 mp3 player to buy a newer, cooler one in 4 months. Statistically NOBODY chucks an expensive pocket computer whose marginal replacement cost exceeds $400 for an incremental improvement 4-6 months down the line. The closest ANY phone has probably come to motivating early switching was the Evo, and that was basically because the Evo was roughly twice as good as the Hero in almost every meaningful way, and worse in basically none. Users MIGHT be induced to switch early for 10x faster data, twice the cpu speed, 50% more resolution on a screen nearly twice the size, and a lot more ram. Users are NOT going to casually switch because one has 2.2 and one is officially stuck at 2.1... they're just going to root, reflash, and promise their deity of choice that they'll never buy another Samsung phone again.
If anything, T-Mobile is the biggest loser, because if true, this means that Samsung is effectively doing its best to devalue T-Mobile's inventory of existing unsold Vibrants. Now, if T-Mobile charges $10/month more for 4G service, that might merit trying harder to induce otherwise-indifferent new purchasers to go with the 4G model instead of the old model... but if it's the same price per month for service, it's to T-Mobile's own advantage to all but encourage new customers who are indifferent between the two to go with the old one... it's one less phone for T-Mobile to write off as a loss and send to a spare parts warehouse to gather dust until it ends up in a landfill or gets dumped on a new penny-pinching customer who only cares that it's "free" with 2-year contract, and one fewer customer who'll start abusing youtube as a source of free in-car music on demand (soaking up lots of bandwidth in the process).
This is the kind of logic that leaves me wondering how some big corporations can even stay in business. I worked for one a couple of years ago where we were ordered to *immediately* dispose of a hundred or so old laptops -- at a cost of $250 apiece -- instead of keeping them piled on a few shelves in a storage room in case we came up with a good use for them someday (like using them as thin clients for call center operators... something we had, in fact, done before). The executive rationale? The accountants complained that they were "costing" us $5,000/month to store based on the square-foot value of the space they were taking up in the closet, and somebody's wet dream fantasies about the value of that space. The thing is, we were about ~15 employees in a warehouse-like facility almost a square city block in size that was 95% empty (built during the dotcom boom, then the company was stuck with it due to a glut of similar buildings nearby). So, we burned $25,000 in the name of emptying off a 4x6 foot steel shelving unit, basically to humor the delusional fantasies of a faceless borg more concerned with a checklist item than getting actual work done and bringing in revenue. Madness. Pure, faceless, bureaucratically-driven out of control insanity.

I agree with you and I really love my Epic BUT.... I can't help wondering how much better the phone would be with the upgrade.
Also Im sure this has been posted but this is an interesting read rating carriers and manufacturers on their upgrade rate.

Nexus S reboot problem:
Google Nexus S, google's second handset is in the limelight for wrong reasons this time. Looks like, the nexus S handsets are randomly rebooting atleast once every 48 hours, usually during a voice call! Google has officially confirmed this bug in their support forum. All the handsets that has been updated to the latest version of gingerbread (Android 2.3.1/GRH78) are affected by this bug.

The real reason they are stonewalling on the 2.2 update for Vibrant is this: When they released the 2.2 update for the Vibrant in Canada, the update worked fine for a week or two, and then like clockwork bricked a huge percentage of the phones that updated. And when I say bricked, I'm not being liberal with that word, after a week or so running the Samsung 2.2 update, the SD card would become corrupt, and recovery mode would be unable to format it. My wife and I both have Vibrants, and it happened to them both one day apart. Samsung has been silent on the matter. Not surprising they'd avoid moving sending the 2.2 update out to US Vibrant owners, and also not surprising that they're refusing to explain why. Bell at least is fixing them, but lots of people on the XDA forum are saying their "repaired" phones are bricking again in short order.

With regard to the Froyo update, we recently issued the following statement: "Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing and are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S owners, including the Samsung Vibrant, as soon as possible.

Just to add to this conversation --> Just got off a chat with Sprint and I kept asking them about Froyo for the Epic. Everytime I mentioned it, the Sprint rep would direct me to Samsung and it's their fault. I think they got mad that I kept asking and pushing the subject, that they said they could no longer help me on the chat and gave me Samsung's number to call.
Looking at Samsung's facebook account, there a bunch of people complaining about this issue. Hopefully all this pressure will make Samsung cave in. *crosses fingers*

Having come from the Crackberry world, this sort of stuff happens all the time. A supposed "reliable source" will leak some sort of story, the fringe enthusiast sites get wind of it and generates chatter and it eventually gets picked up by a naive journalist with a lazy editor and it gets put up as "legit" news which then causes a feedback loop which causes the internet to explore.
The example that comes to mind is the OS 4.7.0.113 update for the Blackberry Storm 9530 on Verizon, a leaked OS that "reliable sources" claimed was going to be the next official update but wasn't. It made it to PC World as well:

And it was 100% bull****. So I wouldn't give this rumor much credence.
The explanation of not wanting to take the wind out of the sails of the Vibrant 4G is irrelevant to other Galaxy S models where there is no similar Osbourne effect - such as with the Epic 4G.
My guess is that the actual explanation is much more mundane. Given the problem with Froyo bricking Vibrants, I would bet dollars to donuts that Samsung got super gunshy and their slow approach to Froyo updates to smaller markets is nothing more than a widespread, low-risk beta test to make sure their code is up to snuff before risking releasing an unstable update to the larger, litigious American Galaxy S userbases.
Well it finally happened. My G1 has finally taken the BIG plunge. It's totaled. Screen is cracked and won't even come on. I was looking for an outing for months now however. With two lines and my girlfriend already breaking hers, I was paying out the yin yang for service with T-Mobile and I also knew for months that with the company I work for I get a discount with every carrier but T-Mobile. My G1's will be missed. I do wish I could keep them and continue to follow the development that has carried the phone this far when everyone said there was no way. If I somehow get the screen fixed I will probably continue to do so.
However for now, I have ordered two new EVO's and I am switching my carrier to Sprint. I get a 15% discount on my bill every month and I am very excited with it's developing community and am looking forward to moving on with android.
I wish the developers and followers of the G1 the best and continue doing awesome work for such a great phone.

I am opening this thread in hopes it will keep other threads cleaner. Motorola did not update to ICS. we know that.
One suggestion I have is JUMP ship. get a different device. You can get a pantech bust for about $100 on ebay with official ICS. I got a galaxy note for $150 myself. The atrix still goes for around $100.
I still have my atrix as a backup phone.
suggestion 2 keep going the rout of requesting cooperation from moto/punit etc. Yes you may feel it is falling on deaf ears and you may be correct.
My main suggestion and point of this thread is please stop posting about this in every atrix thread on XDA. THese threads are to help the atrix community and people must now search harder to find what they are looking for because they must wade through post after post of motohate then post after post of bickering at other members.
please keep our threads clean
if you have any suggestions of what can be done or good deals on alternative phones post them here

About jumping ship. I do realize that my suggestion does not help those with all the docks and accessories as much. I do not know what the docks sell for. And I can't speak of the quality of the burst. I do know it requires a smaller sim card. I was just suggesting it as a means to swap for a device with similar specs that is on official ICS with no major cost in the end. I am pleased with the quality of my note but I realize that I got it almost $100 less than average used price
I cant buy another phone...I dont have the money and I have a contract with an operator...and the note in my country cost a lot much than my atrix...so any other sugestion???

I am in US and realize I got a great deal on note. And Also realize that even buying burst even though it has little cost in end has upfront cost of nearly 100 US. I am on straightalk att sim. I am still burnt by moto. I have a nonupgradeable device that is still under manufacture warranty so I don't want to get rid of it yet. hopefully more people will have suggestions as well
I sold my Atrix for a good price ($200) without the lapdock.
then again, I sold it to someone who asks me everyday about how to do stuff, so I consider the extra price as a bonus for all the things I've helped him with.
I got a Note and never looked back. Never again, Motorola. Never.
Still, I'm stuck with an Atrix because my boss has it and he always wants a different ROM. It's a good phone. Such a shame Motorola was backing it.
Well...in my country (argentina) a new atrix on a contract cost 1800 pesos argentinos and a Note on a contract cost 3500 pesos argentinos...so if I want to buy it w/o a contract the note cost 5000 pesos argentinos.
So Im f***...thats why I still pushing moto or punit to release the source code...

AT&T has their own trade in program and currently they value my device at $36. Obviously that's a bit on the low side, but the reality is that something is only worth what you can sell it for, whether that's $10 or $100, and ebay is loaded with them, especially after the ICS cancellation.
That said, I'm stuck in a contract with mine for the next few months with no way out and no money to jump ship. Once opportunity does present itself, I will have to see what's available at the time, but tbh, this was my first true smart phone, yet I'm still feeling stupid for getting it.
Get a phone used that is older than the 4g and has been upgraded to ICS.
My thoughts are you have always been able to upgrade your PC, laptop and other computers at will. Why are phones and tablets any different?
I think the answer is simple: greed. There have always and only ever been excuses that all point to controlling consumer options and taking away freedoms in order to accomplish a bottom line.
For that, I do not believe buying another device will matter. We always end up supporting someone's idea of controlling my content. Screw that. I bought the device, I should be allowed to install what I want. Not what ATT or Motorola or Apple or even Google wants but what I want.

I do not know how it is in the rest of the world but in the US craigslist is a good source for used phones. as with anything though there are also scammers out there. It was sad to see atrix price drop after ics cancelation. I think they went for almost 200 before to 150 after and now about 150. I got my wife a nexus 7 recently. I know it will stay updated but felt a bit bad purchasing from Motorola parent company Google.
My Atrix is just the latest in a long line of attempts to get a good deal for cheap that partially failed. Got my Atrix just before the announced cancellation of the update. Only good thing is I'm not stuck with a contract. I would have made another phone choice, if I'd jknow was being lied to my Moto.
For me its not so much about them failing on the upgrade. Its more about moto actively trying to keep us from getting ICS or any other rom on our own. Locking bootloaders on updates and ordering cease and desist on the leaked kernel. Its a big FU right in all of our faces. I just can't believe a company would actively do this to their customers, not even their regular customers... the enthusiast. makes no sense to me, before the atrix moto is the only phone company I would have. Now its the only one I refuse to buy.

On top of money and carrier contracts we may be stuck in, there's also the issue of carrier compatibility. For those of us with AT&T, I'm sure there are devices they don't offer that will work, and some may even have full capabilities, but when it comes to their current offerings, it's pretty slim pickings, regardless of what OS you want.
my brother asked me today if he could use a s3 from sprint on att. I said sadly no. would be nice since sprint phones always seem to go for less money. probably because they have a worse network. I told him to buy it anyway because they wanted 150 for it and I know it is worth more even if the esn is bad. I have been watching for a good used dual core that is updated for my wife. I am not in a hurry because I want a deal. she has atrix as well for now. been looking at lg nitro and s2 s3 onex. probably some others
I picked up a pantech burst for my wife yesterday for 65$. waiting for simcard cutter. dual core and ICS. plus I can still sell atrix for more than that

Fingerprints a gimmick and you can get a camera app. How good do you want your phone camera to be anyway?
Not being inflammatory but get a ROM and enjoy it until your phone dies a natural death.
In fact mine died and I brought a new one for cheap, that's how happy I am with Th3bills Liquid Smooth.

Blame Google they control moto now.I got a new phone few weeks back still have my atrix themed all out sweet sits home on WiFi still want to update the kernel in it learning a new phone now am support is dieing on the atrix..

I've got a new phone. i717 note on cm10. a pantech burst on official ics. and will soon be playing with a HTC desire that will have fully functional jellybean. I like playing with these old phones then selling them for more than I paid. and my atrix got replaced under warranty and there is no way as of now to unlock the bootloader.
Even when/if a new kernal is built my atrix is locked. Mine will most likely be sold soon but I want to try the soak test first. Might keep it for a while though as it is under warranty
if there’s a time machine，i would choose Nexus S rather other than Atrix 4g. The crude reality slapped my face，how foolish i was.
