**DEV REQUEST** 4G Idle timeout change - Nexus S General

This is a request to the devs out there.
I just wondered if anyone was able to get into the 4G / Wimax settings on the phone ?
I'm interested to know if there is an ability to increase the length of the 4G 'idle' timeout.
The debug menu (*#*#33284#*#*) seems to have all WIMAX settings locked down, and I windered if there was a way to look at these via adb ?
I've heard that you can increase it to a max of 300 minutes ?
Something like this for the Evo ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-731960.html

Not the same as the evo. Idle is a feature. When internet isnt in demand, it idles. The time has nothing to do with idle.

This feature is f**king my internet connection up. It basically disconnects, and won't reconnect on incoming push notifications. I've had this confirmed by Sprint, but posts to the contrary on other threads make me think something odd is going on.
I'm losing the will with this idle feature.

What Rom and kernel are you using? I do know some kernels force a file called wimax_service.dex in /cache. My pushes seem to work fine. 4g turns back to reception bars when needed.

Im running MIUI so I dont have 4g, but I also have an epic, and the wimax settings can be changed on it also. You have to access the data menu with wimax on, on the nexus it would be *#*#3282#*#*, then "edit", enter you msl, then go to wimax or whatever it is. As I said, Im on MIUI, so I dont know if this is even possible with the nexus. This is what I have my epic at:
ScanAttemptTimeOut 00005
ScanRetries 00120
IdleSleep 00300
EntyRX -00094
EntryCINR 0004
EntryDelay 00001
ExitCINR 00008
ExitDelay 00300

Tell Sprint to f**k off and go to T-Mobile. I'm really close to doing that. I'm pissed beyond belief.

Stock everything.
Honestly I've tried everything. It has to be a configuration setting somewhere. I can't believe this is normal. As you say it should kick back in for push.
Samsung wont get the phone back from repair before my 30 days are up. I may have to go T-Mobile

Idk if having that wimax_service file in /cache helps with kickback or not

same here... I complained today and all I got was a lowsy $50 svc credit... But hell ill take anything right now to lower bill lol

That's a good idea. See you back when you become screwed by AT&T after the merger.

?? Can I ask what this is/does ?

im also looking for ways to edit the wimax settings. it doesnt seem like theyre blocked.. it seems like the apk's that were used for those menus arent even on the phone. has anyone tried taking the wimax apks from the epic to see if thatd allow us to do anything? if not, ill be trying this eventually.
hard finding people to talk about this wimax editing stuff. ive also noticed.. at least on my phone.. when running the commands to "backup wimax.img" that my image has NO unique data in it.. its just filler space, FFFFFFFF over and over. is this the case for everyone else?
and heres a post i came across explaining all of the EPICS system apks.. including the above mentioned ODB.apk.. which says to leave it. but this also has the wimax apks. and im hoping they'll work on the nexus.. as it seems the wimax in the nexus is EXACTLY the same as the epic. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773142
**UPDATE 2**
installed the wimax apks from the epic.. didnt work. lol. also.. tried dumping the phones memory with cdma workshop which doesnt seem to work at all. com port always disconnects. ideas anyone?

Sooo that's it? 160 views and nobody has anything?
I don't see what the big deal is. Even when I hadn't rooted my phone, I always got an error when trying to update profile or prl, so I don't see it as a big deal.
I remember there might be a way to update those things using your MSL (re: service programming).
Forgive My Brevity. To Be Or Not To Be...
I was also hav ing issues with updating my phone, even before I received the DI18 update, before I finally decided to root my phone. I had taken it in to the local store... they couldn't do anything to fix it, just did a bunch a resets and stuff. They had me call in to Sprint tech support, and basically got the same results. At this point, I was also starting to experience random reboots. Eventually they gave up and decided to replace my phone.
At the time, I didn't know much about rooting and stuff, so I didn't want risk it on a phone that wasn't fully functioning, just in case other issues arose later, then run into a problem getting it fixed because I had rooted my phone.
When I got my new phone, and everything worked as it should, I finally decided to root, and have never looked back.
I have been unable to update prl for the last few days. I get the message "internal error."
I'm rooted, using epic experience and the latest mixup kernel. The sprintandroidextension.apk is installed.
Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

Alright, I just tried this, no success. I did notice however that every time I try to update, it begins searching for prl and then data appears to turn off. Wifi turns off, 4g turns off, and even my 3g icon disappears.
Wiped everything 3x, installed latest epic experience along with phoenix kernel and the shabbypengquins latest battery tweak.
I was hoping this would work, but alas no. Same exact error.

I'm just hoping once Froyo comes out, it'll fix this issue.
Is there atleast a way to do it manually? With all of this 4g stuff going on there is more of a need to update more frequently I would think....

I came across the exact same problem. I also dropped my Epic (way before the problem began) and cracked the chrome and paint on the side of the bottom right corner. I brought it into my Sprint store, they ran the prl update twice, it failed. They had a brand new non remanufactured Epic the next day. This one runs way better and the vibrates stronger when pushing keys. I suggest you bring it in and get a new one.
Forgot to mention I was outside of my 30 days, I had the phone for 60 days. They still replaced it.

I purchased mine from Radioshack, so I'm guessing the Sprint store won't be as helpful. I'm not quite ready to give up and try to use the warranty on it, this is just a little bit frustrating.
I was able to update the PRL before...
Also, there is a thread on SDX about the problem too.

I'd suggest waiting for froyo to come out and then try to see if you can update the PRL. That's what I'm hoping for anyways. If it doesn't work then, then it's going back.
If it turns out you have to bring it in, Sprint called it a defect in the phone so they didn't make me use insurance which also means I didn't get a refurb but a brand new one. Funny thing the very first time I ran the prl in store before walking out I got the internal error again but the salesman hit it again and it went through. I've been testing it for two weeks now and it works every time

Using Boost service on Vogue

I have searched and have done research on this for a couple weeks and now I am finally coming for help
My Vogue is unlocked and I am to flash multiple ROMS on it. I have already transferred the phone information through Boost. I know that there is no roaming with Boost service and have turned off the roaming feature and set it to Sprint Only. With all that being siad, here is my dilemma.... I have almost zero reception.
I have driven around with the phone and there a couple places outside of town where I get 1 or 2 bars and I see it switch to EV. In that period, I can make a call to another phone and all seems to be working. All other times though, i get Zero to One bar of 1x but the phone is basically useless. . I have tried about 7 different prl's thinking maybe that was the issue but that did not work. I know the phone works and I have Sprint reception in my area because all my other lines work fine. Does anyone have any idea on what I may be able to do to get this working?
Thanks in advance to all of you!
And if you dont know, maybe someone could point me in the right direction? Thanks guys.

I believe that there is a way to program your phone to poll from the towers a bit more often as well as give it more priority, but I cannot remember the parameters for this. I will have to dig for a that a bit. The radio and rom are both good ones and should, in theory, not give you any issues. My only concern with everything you said is that you turned off the roaming feature. That is about the only other thing I can think of. What happens if you do turn it on?
Awww man those parameters would probably help a LOT. I was told that Boost can't roam so it should be kept off. When I do enable roaming, it stays at 1x and has the roaming triangle, but I cant make any calls and I get a "Verizon Wireless" message. Oddly enough, I have ssen one bar of 3G/EV today but still not nowhere near enough capacity to use the phone reliably

Data keeps randomly disconnecting; radio update needed??

It's been happening for a while now. I can have full signal on H, then suddenly no H, E, or G. Data does not reconnect automatically; I have to force it by switching Airplane mode On/Off. I saw something in the forums about a radio update, but I heard that removes ability to change permroot/S-OFF. Please help me clarify this, and if there is an update, is it safe and should I install it.
Stock ROM, temp-rooted with Visionary and permrooted with HBOOT/WPTHIS_OTA method. Kernel is the one linked in my signature thing [1497KHz] and pushed Wi-Fi module. Hopefully that's enough info. Let me know if you need my SSN# ...lol

I have been experiencing this exact problem quite often over the last two weeks. I am using CM 6.1.1 in Chicago.
same situation happens to me...nvr seem to have a solid 3g/H in my house. While my blackberry will be having 3G all day. The g2 will fluctuates from H -> G -> E and stays like that. So annoying that ruins the experience of having a good data phone.
Same problem here! It happens from time to time, I have to switch off/on data to get reconnected.
Also happens when I turn off wifi after a long period of use, It won't reconnect to the carrier's data.
I had this when I switched over to CM 6.1.1. I thought it was CM so I flashed my backup, then decided to try it again. The problem I found was Pershoot's kernel. My data connection would drop and come up on it's own and was happening while I was using data. I've been running CM 6.1.1 with it's kernel and haven't had this problem since.
Same here running latest Virt (tmous g2) and I *think* it's running a pershoot hybrid.
I have never run Pershoot's kernel, and have always used the kernel included with CM. It seems to be recent (last two weeks) problem for me. The phone cycles from 3G->G->E->3G->H. The worst, however, is when it shows 3G->H but cannot connect to anything. The only solution is to turn off the data and let it reconnect.
I think it might actually be network related and not hardware / software. Maybe too many new phones activated around the Holidays? The reason I think this is that my Nexus One keeps having similar problems --- even on different ROMs.
Could be either?
I used to be on Mobilicity in Canada and experienced this (random disconnects from data several times a day, wouldn't automatically reconnect), switched to Wind and I haven't had this problem.

Data Problems...
Ignore my signature I'm currently on G2.
I think the problem you all have might be a TMobile problem.
I live in Madison TN / Nashville TN and I been having that data drop problem for going on a year now. Happended on every phone I been on Mytouch 3G Mytouch Slide Samsung Vibrant HD2 and now I'm on the G2 that I bought yesterday. Also had the same problem on a Nexus one.
The situation was that I will have all my bars and a 3G/H symbole and my connection would just fall a sleep with the 3G still in corner. Put phone in airplane mode and take it out airplane mode and my downloads will resume.
This process would happen after 15 min or 20 min of constant data.
2 days ago I started calling tmobile to get this fixed. Told them I didn't have this problem on ATT and Verizon so they put in a service ticket with the engineers and they claim it should be resolved in the next couple days if mot to give them a call back and to forward my call straight to level 2 tech support.
More people should complain about it.
That happended across atleast 5 different pda phones and 3 different sim cards. Yeah some of the phones had custom roms but each phone shouldn't have the same symptons.
The cellular towers in my area must really have a problem and I'm expecting a credit on my account lol.
PS connection is perfect on Edge though... Just slow...

For that to happen to me on 5 different devices that will tell you that CPU speed has nothing to do with it. Best I can say is to reset your phone to stock and give TMobile a call and let them know the situation. If you dont, nothing will be done about it.
I say to return to stock because if you dont, there reps will try there best to put the blame on you and the custom software. But from my experience being on Nexus One / MyTouch Slide / MyTouch 3G / Samsung Vibrant / HD2 / G2 all having the same exact problem????

Is it the same EXACT problem I'm describing? Or are you talking about general reception? Because some people on here with different ROMs (or radios) have mixed results. I'm in an HSPA+ area with full signal usually, but I keep having my data disconnecting. After a while it comes back, but I don't like to wait that long. I just switch radio on/off. :/

Yeah it sounds like the same exact problem to me which I had on all those other phones too. Im like you I dont feel like waiting so I switch to airplane mode on and off and the data comes back.
Or Il just drop to 2G Edge only and the connection is stable just slow though.
I couldnt find a solution online so now I got tmobile reps in the picture to get this resolved for my area though.
Count me in. I HAD a BB 9700 and it behaved the same way you guys are talking about but i didn't have to set it to airplane mode to reset the connection. I do however have to restart my G2 sometimes to get it connects to Tmobile network again. It is such an inconvenience.

3g to 1x issue

Hi, i was just wondering if anyone was having problems wit 3g staying consistently on? it keeps switching to 1x and stays there most of the time if not the whole time... I updated to DL30 with DL09 modem on 1230 non voodoo by adyl which works great..is this a known issue if so is there a fix? thank you in advance
I'm still on DL09 (stock rom) and still having problems from 3g to 1x. I noticed the problem seemed to happen when the service in the area wasn't all that great. But what's unusual, my friend has a htc eris and it stayed locked on the 3g no matter the reception...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
This phone just has poor signal compared to others I've had and did you say your overclocked on dl30? I didn't think that was possible yet
well i was on dl01 before and i had to switch to DL09 to be able to get to DL30.. i followed adrynalyne step in installing.. i installed the radio/then the modem/then the kernel because he indicated that you should install all 3 so you wont have anything stop working.. at that point i dled DL30 and flashed it with cwm.. could that be the problem since i installed the non-voodoo kernel? or when i flashed DL30 that didnt matter anymore?
I am having the same exact issue. Before I flashed I usually had 1 or 2 bars at work locked in at 3g, now its always 1 or 2 bars locked in at 1x. Sucks. But everything else is great.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
What kernel are you using again? It looks like you're using a kernel built for 2.1 on 2.2, which could very well be part of your problem. There are very few kernels that are available for DL30 at this point. There is the stock kernel, stock kernel with boot animation support, and stock kernel that supports cwm recovery.
mmm around 3:50pm, 3g just started working again.. i heard from someone close to me say that verizon was messing with some towers.. i guess it was around this area.. or something.. hope it doesnt happen again... fingers crossed!
Yeah, I was having the same issue yesterday. Verizon is sending a new phone. Then this afternoon it started working again...whoops.
The fascinate has a poor CDMA antenna compared to other phones.
Htc phones and motorola phones get 10-15dbm higher reception at all times.
Because of this, your reception suffers (obviously).
Sometimes when a text or call happens, it'll switch to 1x and get stuck. Why?
Poor reception.
I have 3g in my office at work about 30% of the time. My olds HTC eris? 100%. It's how the phone is built and cannot be changed.
It's one of it's shortcomings, imo.

Possible 3g to 1x fix
I do agree with some of the other posters here about the fascinate service issues and after tearing my Incredible, Droid 1 and Fascinate apart I will say the Saw Filter and PA are different manufactures as one would come to expect between different manufacturers.
Long story short,
Try different PRL's
Verizon has a plethora of different PRL's try some of these.
You will need QPST to update PRL get it at
htr. thecamson. com/hacktherazr.com-QPST_2.7_b215.exe
To enable USB Modem mode on the Fascinate type **USBUI then select modem on both options
To update PRL plug in your fasciante after the 2 above steps then
1. select QPST Configuration/Add new port if you don't see a phone connected (its connected if it says SURF and some numbers.)
2. Start Clients/ Service Programming
3. Click OK/ click Roam/ Browse to any of the attached PRL files/ Click Write To Phone (Your SPC or MSL is 000000)
4. DONE!!
Hope this works for you guys. I personally run 65145 and I have constant 3g. I dont know if it will be the same but give it a try!!

[Q] Permanently Disable Wifi?

I seem to be having issues with every ROM concerning cell signal. I can't get 2G/3G signal at all, and can only get 4G signal when in the right area (as expected).
I think it has something to do with my malfunctioning WiFi. It constantly just tries to turn itself on, with no success. I'm quite positive that my WiFi is broken due to hardware problems (internal coaxial cable, etc) as I have flashed several ROMs and radios with no positive results in order to try to fix it. I've even tried unrooting and returning back to stock.
What I was wondering is it possible to permanently disable WiFi on the MT4G so that I can try to get around this issue?
You could flat out take out the wifi radio chip.
Ah, THEindian. To what do you I owe you for the grace of your presence?
The problem with that is really just that I don't have the torque screwdrivers or a phillips small enough to disassemble the phone. I was looking more for a software "fix". I'm not really even positive that the WiFi has anything to do with causing issues with the 2G/3G reception.

Yes. That's the wifi module.
So, I renamed the file to have a .bak extension. It did accomplish what I wanted to (disabling the wifi and preventing it from turning on constantly) but it did not fix the real issue of not being able to recieve 2G/3G signal. I don't know what else to do.

Yes, I am a T-Mobile US customer. APN settings should be correct according to the support docs on the T-Mobile site. I've made a few other adjustments to this ROM's build.prop to the wifi settings. Set it to use eth0 as the interface for a while rather than wlan0. Still hoping there's a software fix for this mess.

That seems to be the only option I have left. I just fear that I'm going to break something and then revert back to using an old Samsung Gravity because that's the only other GSM phone I have. I'll have to find a place that sells small enough torque screwdrivers as well as a phillips head small enough to take off the screw under the "Void" sticker.
Well you could disable on build.prop

Ebay.
I'm actually thinking about using my friend's old unlocked iPhone 3GS for a while (maybe they even refarmed the 1900's around where I live to get 3G by now) until I can scrape up the cash to get a One S.
I'll put the whole story of my phone's downfall here to see if somebody can figure out what it is, or maybe even try to prevent it happening to others.
Bought the phone back in February 2011, and it worked perfectly fine up until April 2012. During this time I was running a Sense 4.0A ROM (can't recall the name) and my phone had died from battery drain. When I charged it up and turned it back on, my WiFi was no longer functioning. It would just repeatedly attempt to turn on and switch itself off again.
I flashed several different ROMs and radios to try to see if I could fix it. No luck. I then suspended my line from T-Mobile's service from June 2012 up until 2 weeks ago. When I had my service restored, I no longer had 2G/3G connectivity. By this, I mean when I'm in an area that does not have 4G coverage, I'm greeted to a "Limited Signal" message and cannot send texts or make calls. If the area has 4G coverage, I can do everything as normal with no problems.
I flashed several other ROMs to see if it was just an issue with that, no luck there either. I then just proceeded to unroot and return to stock. I was never successful in turning the S=ON (none of the guides posted worked) but did lose root privs and bring myself back to Stock Froyo.
None of this has worked so far. Since then, I've re-rooted and reflashed cnote's ICS MIUI build and here I stand.
