I have the transformer 32GB version. It really impressed me comparing it to my gtablet. Unfortunately the touchscreen stopped working within 24 hours. Even running nvflash with the stock 3.1 image has not revived it. They may more may not have another (the did not have the 16GB version thats why I got the 32). Has anyone tried both and what are your thoughts on the galaxy tab? How is browser flash?
While I never owned a transformer, one of my coworkers brought his in to let me use it for a day before I purchased the gtab 10.1. The Transformer is great if you want all the expansion ports like the sd card and more so, the ability to dock it to turn it into a netbook. With that being said, the Galaxy 10.1 is a much more refined product. After playing with the Transformer for a while you really appreciate just how much lighter and thinner the Galaxy is. I actually understand why they didn't put any of the expansion ports onto the sides of the tab because it would have really interrupted a great form factor.
If you're choosing one of these over the other, it would definitely be because of the hardware though. The software is very close to being the same since the internals are pretty much identical.
TRansformer is good. since nvflash's secure key been found by RaYmAn. you can flash anything on it if you like
Thanks I'm going to try just a straight replacement. It makes me uneasy that out of 3 people getting them at work 2 of them had the touch not working issue. Going to try seeing if Fry's has the 16GB and downgrade. Only got the 32GB because they were OOS for 16GB.
I sold my TF to get the I/O Tab, and I think the latter wins hands down.
The TF looked like a cheaper product, w some weird hw bugs (mine had an unaligned display w some light bleed, a creaking case and an audio alignment issue), while the Tab looks like a more polished product, it's much more portable and light to handle and I have yet to find any problem aside from Honeycomb's well known issues.
I'd never use HDMI on such a device and by having 32GB of onboard storage I doubt I'd ever need a SD card expansion slot (but just in case I'll buy the USB Host adapter to plug in any HDD or USB Dongle I should need).
Maybe it was just me being unlucky w/ the Asus and lucky w/ the Samsung, but I'm really happy of my new tablet and atm I wouldn't look back for any other device out on the market.

This. I went through two TFs, the first with a dead touchscreen and the second with an uneven bezel and light leak. Design wise it's slick. Quality not so much.
It's telling that the local Fry's has (according to the sales dude) gone through three demo units on display in the last month because the touch screen keeps dying.
When I see the announcement of 10.1 ...I already set my mind to get the 10.1. But when the Transformer was launched and sold out every where, I managed to get a 16G version on Walmart ...So I got the keyboard dock too, not that I need it.
And then the 10.1 launched, I ordered the 32G from Amazon. Very happy so far. Love it...it's lighter than TF and sexy. I don't care much about those ports and MicroSD. The speed of the MicroSD is slow and I don't want to cough out the extra $$$ to buy a CLASS 10 MicroSD. So the 32G is good for me...esp when using the EZreader to read some downloaded magazines. It's loaded some much better and smoother than TF. Now I still waiting for the Skinomi skin to arrive, so I can stick it on my 10.1......that will be nice....I love the look of the bare TAB rather with a Cover. Just handle it with EXTRA CARE.
And my TF goes to my Sister!

We are at 2 out of 5 at work. If it happens again and there isn't a fix by then(it has to be a software issue) I will get the tab. I prefer the hackability of the asus but not if it doesn't work.
How does the screen compare to the galaxy tab 10.1. Is. It like comparing the retna display to the super amoled display? Hopefully its not to much of a difference

10.1 screen is superior if you like oversaturated colors.
also it's superior because of the PLS display. IPS on transformer seems to have screen bleeding as a standard.
Saw comments from asus Germany in their blog (http://blog.asus.de/asus-eeepad-slider-transformer-–-mehr-als-nur-tablets/), they say it's normal and ipads have it too. You can translate this passage to your language:

Some scattered light from the backlight can pass the display @ max. black levels. That's a structure problem with thin architectures. Even pads from the publisher with a fruit logo are not immune to it. It's depends on taste if it's disturbing.

Also black is not really black on transformer, you see it if you have both side by side. The min and max brightness settings can go deeper/higher on 10.1. Contrast is superior too.
I bought the transformer and returned it less then a week later. The screen bleed was terrible, at full brightness 1/3 of my screen was light grey when looking at black. The colors dull, and Max brightness a tad to low. It certainly felt well built though, no creeks or anything. The size difference is noticeable, but that in particular wasn't a game changer for me. Having had both, I'm glad I went with the galaxy.

I have the Samsung Book Case cover. I still use the Tab at home without a case because it feels so good in my hands. The cover is for when I leave the house with the Tab.
I also bought the Transformer first and returned it. I am contemplating exchanging my 10.1 for another Transformer. Not because I think the TF is better. It's not. However, for that price, it is much smarter to go with if you are planning to be an early adopter of Kal-El.
With that said, the display was full of light bleeds and that is a major pet peeve of mine. The speakers were not nearly loud enough. I could barely hear a movie on it with the volume at max. With the 10.1, my gf yells at me to turn it down. It had some pretty bad creaking, too.
Do I miss the SD card? Hell yes, but not because of space. The 10.1 is a pain in the ass to mount. I always have to turn USB Debugging on and off. And when you mount it, it's not seen as a removable disk. It's seen as a media device. You can only copy/move one large file at a time and can't even see picture thumbnails. Stupid.
Anyways, I may return it for the TF since I'm really just waiting for the next batch of tablets. Amazon Hollywood anyone?
Had the TF with the dock. Updated to 3.1. Glitchy and laggy as hell. Like everyone else has said... Lots of light bleed eveywhere. I also had the panel pulling away on a corner. So after a week I returned it. Got the tab 10.1... Night and day difference... No lag, perfect screen... Butter. But, just to make sure I dont want a smaller tab, i just got a nook color and installed CM7. That is a hard to beat combo for $250. The special soft buttons are very well done... Plus its a piece of cake to install once you get a bootable CWM micro sd card setup. But, it will be going back. Its hard to consider using anything else after having the 10.1. I would say that thr TF has the best overall screen color and saturation... Very natural and mac like a colors. That said, the 10.1 is the best android tablet available.
Edit: Not sure if my dock was faulty but typing on it was not pleasant. The keys only responded if you hit them dead center and the track pad was useless.

I tried 3 tab from yesterday. First, Toshiba Thrive(32GB) (available @ BB in store). I totally loved it. It has everything in it. But so far I haven't seem any support from and dev on xda. Well, today afternoon I exchanged that with Transformer (16GB). Frankly speaking, I was missing Thrive a lot. Anyway, it was running 3.0.1. It automatically downloaded update for 3.1. Manually installed it. Everything was working smoothly, until I found that it couldn't play FLAC. Also, the sound from one of the speaker was quite low, and overall not as loud as Toshiba Thrive. In the evening, I returned that and got Tab 10.1 (32GB) and the first thing that I said even before booting was WOW!!!! Once it booted, it was like another WOW!!!. Currently I haven't played much with the Samsung Tab 10.1 yet.
I hope in future I see some love for Toshiba Thrive.

I have Win7 on my computer.
I did:
1. go to control panel, uninstall any samsung usb drivers
2. go to the tab, disable usb debugging.
3. connect both of them. Let the computer do its work on reinstalling the drivers.
Thats it. IT WORKS 100% NOW AS A REMOVABLE DISK. It actually behaves way better than my rooted samsung galaxy fascinate, which requires 3 button presses to confirm you want usb storage mode, and 30% simply wont be recogninzed by the computer. The tab 10.1 works every time without any prompts.

I think you are confused. The 10.1 will only show as a media device. This is what shows after using the instructions you provided. I have an 8GB flash drive plugged in as well. That is how I wish the 10.1 worked.

can't you change that in options somewhere? my galaxy s has an option to choose from auto/kies/mass storage when connected to pc. phone mode is for kies software.
I had the Transformer for about three weeks, and then my screen would not display anything. The device was on, as I found out, and the hdmi worked fine so I was able to factory reset it. I was still within the return time for Amazon, but of course the Transformer wasn't in stock. $100 dollars more and one microsd slot less later I has a Samsung Tab.
I didn't think that the weight and thinness would be that noticeable, but I found it rather amazing how different they were. Also, the stability is much better, tho some of the native apps on the Transformer were a little more useful, but that functionality can be found on the market anyway (ahem, remote desktop) and pulse is actually pretty cool. (the samsung tab native news feed)
I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you haven't already read, but all things considered I'm actually happy with the tab. I have a small case for my laptop. The transformer didn't fit without more pressure then I was comfortable with, but the tab slides right in with no encouragement.

I have actually owned the Asus Transformer and now the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Point blank, the Galaxy Tab wins hands down. At first I was reluctant to give up my Transformer because I bought the dock, but after installing Thumb Keyboard, I used the dock less. I hated the lag that occured when typing online with Transformer.
Seriously...there is really no reason to keep the Transformer other than price and built-in media card slots.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is marvelous to hold in your hands whereas the Asus Transformer cut into your palms at bit. The GT is lighter and sleek. The screen is remarkably better in terms of quality and responsiveness. There's a plethora of accessories both from Samsung and 3rd parties currently available. There's even a case with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard coming soon if you need a physical keyboard badly.
As for the mounting issues, those are easily fixed by installing the correct drivers from the Samsung website.
Unless you just want to save money or want to be loyal to Asus, there is no reason to be afraid of upgrading (yes upgrading) to the GT 10.1.

Early feelings, keep in mind -- I've only used the device for a few hours.
- IPS screen is wonderful. Beats out the Xoom and it's the first thing I tested. I don't have an iPad(2) to compare it with, but if my R10 is any indication the screen is probably similar to an iPad, at least the screen angles and color balance. Yellows are yellow, not a bluish yellow.
- 16:10 screen is the best screen for comics. Yep, I'm all about comics. Superior to an 4:3 screen (sorry Apple).
- microSD card actually works. Moto, you reading this?
- ASUS Reader supports epub. Drop them into the ebooks folder, and they "just work" (assuming no DRM, of course). Give me a night mode and this would easily replace Aldiko for me (and if there is a night mode, I just haven't found it yet).
- When you force Portrait mode, the power button is on the top. They got that right, they could have just as easily screwed that up, but they didn't. And I like the power button on top vs. in the back (Xoom).
- Speakers sound good, and are not in the back.
- It's aesthetically pleasing. I like the ridges on the back and the edges. And brown is almost a welcome change in a world of black and white. It LOOKS good.
- It's US $400 for the 16GB device. That's the most important thing of all. Remember, the Viewsonic GTablet was $400 until recently and that doesn't have a GPS, an IPS screen, a 1280x800 screen, 1GB of RAM or Honeycomb support (although it does have 32GB onboard). And the 32GB Wifi Xoom is $600. I think some of these tablet makers will need to take a long hard look at their price points as ASUS is about to alter the tablet market.
Is it perfect? Nope. I hate the proprietary cable, the lack of a real AC adapter for charging, the lack of a full USB port on the tablet itself, the problematic video playback (so far), and of course Honeycomb itself needs some work. And, unlike an iPad or even a Xoom, accessories are non-existent right now and even the dock and the device itself is as hard to find as an iPad2, right now. But, time should correct at least some of these things. I think this thing is going to fly off the shelves and today's insanity was just a taste of things to come - assuming some major defect doesn't manifest itself, of course.

I'll be mainly using my TF to read comics as well, so the 16:9 screen seems like a winner.
Robebeet, can you post some more screenshots of internal comic pages on the device? Also does it take a long time for the pages to load or to turn the pages?

Normally I loathe proprietary cables as well, but I don't think you can knock them for this since it charges at a higher voltage than standard USB can accommodate.
That said... I think Asus would have a winner if the rest of us could actually get out hands on one.
How is the gps? I'm thinking of selling my xoom for the transformer if it matches the xoom wifi's gps strength or better.

It's still not as fast as I'd like, but it's because of the apps I use, NOT the device. I have yet to find the perfect cbr/cbz reader for Android.

The Xoom is not a bad device - but I didn't like some of the design choices and, at $600 for the 32GB Wifi, it's about to be overpriced. I think Moto is going to need to drop that by at least $50, very soon

The GTAB , Adam and Xoom have a separate AC port. So, I can charge it and connect it to my PC at the same time, with the USB cable. You can't do that with this tablet - you'd need the dock to do that.
It becomes annoying very quickly as you have to basically put the device aside and charge it. It basically forces me to buy the (non-existent so far) keyboard dock.

Correct. The GTAB is 16:9 and is too long for comics. And 4:3 (iPad, and my R10) is too wide. 16:10 is the sweet spot for comics reading.

It auto double pages - I don't see an option to change it (that's one bad thing about the app - very few options. I just wish it had a night mode. But it is FAST).

I got mine yesterday... Very pleased so far.
1st, the screen is awesome. Absolutely destroys the Xoom and Galaxy Tab. The iPad screen might be a little better, but not much. It's lighter than I expected, and the build quality seems really good to me. I know some reviews commented on it, but just think Asus netbook quality.
When I first started the device it already had an update. Not sure what it fixed. Very speedy using the web browser. Tried a few apps, then downloaded the game Samurai II which I had seen in some Honeycomb YouTube videos. Signed up for the Amazon App Store. Much nicer than the Marketplace, although it is a lot better than when I used it about a year back.
So far I'm really liking Honeycomb. I think this tablet is totally worth the $400. Can't wait until I get my hand on the dock. I put in a 16gb microsd and it works perfect. Also really happy there was 12gb+ free on the device from the start...
EDIT: Very disappointed Zinio isn't available on Android yet. I thought I read it was.

I purchased a USB 3 Cable that has the correct amount of pins needed to be used as an extension cable (Male to Female) with the Asus charger, so with a 2 meter cable i can now sit on the sofa with it plugged into the charger to get full charge whilst using the transformer.
Saves having to put it down close to a power point to charge it with the silly short cable that it came with.

I think we need a Tegra 3 for that. All these T2 devices are going to have this same problem, I think.
Hi-Def video is not high on my list of needs, so it doesn't bother me too much. If XVid AVI's work, then I'm fairly happy. But I would like to see it work, regardless. WMV's, for example, are broken - I believe the Xoom is the same. And I bet WMA's are broken too, just like the Xoom.

I think the Xoom's is better, but I have to test it more. I'm in my "man cave" and the Xoom GPS actually worked there. Not so on the Transformer. It also likes to eat battery life so I actually turned it off, for now.
EDIT: I went upstairs and it STILL doesn't work. I have this same issue with the Adam, but the Xoom is definitely better. The compass works, though.
Keep in mind that it may take 10-20 minutes for a new GPS to get it's initial fix and download the satellite ephemeris data, assuming a good signal. Once it has that, subsequent fixes will be a whole lot faster, unless it has been months since you turned it on and the data is too out of date.
I'm finding the GPS on the TF to be good, it works in my basement for example, where my LG Optimus will not lock on. I can't compare to the Xoom though.
I haven't been able to get my hands on this device yet. From what I can tell Asus sent out 60 total to retailers in Canada, so the odds were not good.
I am glad to see that Roebeet's on board. He's the reason I bought and enjoyed my Gtab. I'm also a big comic reader and have about 11,000 digital comics just waiting to be read on my TF, when and if I can get one.

Reading cbr's/cbz's on this thing versus the GTAB is like night and day. The GTAB used to give me a headache. I really am an IPS convert - I want to see the yellowing of the pages. Of course, I expect that when there's a 10 inch OLED or color eInk device in two years, I'll port over to that. But right now IPS is king.
Now just get me an Android device that has "smell-o-vision" so I can get that new comic smell, and I'll be all set.
Download Twonky. It is completely free, and with a strong wifi signal, streams content to Apple TV without problem.

The Gtab 1 or 2? If you're refering to the first gen, of course Transformer is better. As for second gen, its not released yet so anything people say is mostly opinion based on specs
I prefer the asus spec wise. All the extra standardized ports and external storage slot are why people choose android over ios, imo. Internals seem similarly matched, Sammy gets the prize for prettiest tablet. If these were laptops sammy would be an nice ultra portable and asus would be the good all-purpose.
I would get the TF for best bang for the buck. You will save 100 bucks and on top of it it has a microsd slot and hdmi port, where the Samsung 10.1 does not. If you just wants looks well then go with the 10.1. I believe that Samsung made a huge mistake not including a microsd slot.... PLS vs IPS screen,what 10% brighter then the IPS screen on the TF not worth it to me. With that extra 100 bucks you save you could get the dock.....TF for the FTW.....
I wanted a galaxy.. but I have to say the lack of SDcard slot on the thing was an absolute dealbreaker. I really couldn't be happier with my transformer at this point.. especially with 3.1 fixing the YouTube / video problems

this may be a little off.. but no one can compare the Samsung 10.1 since its not out. ill give you my opinion about the Xoom and the 10.1 off what i know.
I have heard from people who got the special edition Samsung 10.1 version, was that it had a better screen than the Xoom. the only thing that attracts me to the Samsung 10.1 is the thinness.. but after having a transformer, the size feels just right. I want something there , not just paper thin.
To be honest, get the Transformer.. I had the Xoom for 2 weeks and straight out of the box i knew there was an issue. I tried to enjoy it, but the screen kept turning me off. I went to the motorola forums and random other people posted asking if they would fix it via a firmware update? kinda like how the Nexus 1 got tweaked. There was no solid info regarding the screen. if your looking at the screen 100% of the time it needs to look good. At Angles, the Xoom looked blurry. I always had to hold it directly at me. While my Transformer (4 days new) i can set it down and tilt my head from my PC or any angle and it looks nice, colorful and sharp.
One of the turn off was that the Samsung 10.1 tab had a 3mp camera for front while the Transformer has a 5. these are just minor things but to me, id rather have a 5mp.
IMO, The colors stand out better than the Xoom but i cant compare the Samsung 10.1 which is not out yet.. With the new firmware 3.1 , it kicks even more ass. Samsung has said it would ship with 3.1 out the door. I haven't had any screen bleeding or creaking like a few have stated. Im completely happy in my purchase. Now i want the dock (which is not something i wanted originally) but the Transformer is an excellent Tablet.
What it comes down to is features, Skins ect. The Xoom has a Barometer built in, Transformer has a GPS without a carrier (but works better at tracking you when you uses a hotspot type of device) beyond that, its a click and it shows you the map where your at... i have had problems following me ...say in a car, while im driving. I think the built in Transformer GPS is meant for not moving objects but just a quick glance of the location. If you want it actively following you, like a cell phone GPS use a hotspot from Comcast 20$ a month or create a hotspot with your cellphone.
Im not sure what the Samsung 10.1 has exclusively built in. But since i purchased the transformer, ive forgotten about the Sammy 10.1 tab.
Thanks for the input everyone. Ya the biggest fear I had was not enough ports, especially the hdmi. The transformer is looking like a better pick to me. Just making sure that cloud based storage and remote desktop is standard on all of them right?

the remote desktop is kind of a joke, the reason being that you have to be on the same network as the computer youre linking to. mightbas well use the computer itself if youre that close! but this can always be replaced with other apps readily available in the market. i heard PhoneMyPC was a good alternative, only $15. as for the unlimited storage, its free for a year starting from when you sign up.

The screen on the TF is imho, very good but not great. With all the hype, a more objective review is required. I find the red a bit too brown and the black levels weak. I had been going back and forth for over a month on if I wanted the Transformer or Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I purchased a Transformer a month ago when it first game out and like it, but was also bothered by some small issues. And I kinda think it's a little ugly. I ended up returning it and waiting on the Galaxy Tab 10.1
At the time I thought the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would have a micro SD slot (it was shown having one at CTIA). But now it seems the Wifi model doesn't have a micro SD slot. And one thing I learned from my 16GB iPad 1 experience is 16GB and no micro SD slot are a bad combination. So if I was going to by a Galaxy Tab 10.1, I'd have to spend at least $600 on the 32GB model.
I love the look of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I love how thin and light it is. I love the PLS display. At least I love all that third hand from what I've seen of it so far. But the price difference for me is now $200, since I could get a 16GB Transformer and use a 16GB micro SD card I already own to get 32GB, versus having to buy a 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Yesterday I canceled my pre-order for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and today I went to the store and bought the Transformer again. It's not perfect, but it's pretty dang good and better than anything else available now and apparently in the near future.
I love that it has micro SD, mini HDMI, micro USB, an IPS display, and is still pretty light compared to the other Honeycomb tablets out now.
I'll learn to live with the crappy speakers, goofy wide with rough edges, and ugly color. For only $400 though, it's also pretty amazing deal. And if I can ever find a keyboard dock, that'll just make it even sweeter as an Android netbook.
I really wanted to love the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If it wasn't for the lack of a micro SD slot, I would still be waiting for that instead. That is just one thing I really don't want to sacrifice. Samsung really is copying Apple a little too much these days.

Huh? Port forwarding! btw Splashtop is much better then logmein and its free with the purchase of TF. RD is a must for me casue I have my server which has no keyboard mouse, or monitor, having the ability to access it from the TF is much more easier then use my notebook.

I'll add that there's a version of Splashtop coming that will support connecting to any device via a Gmail account. The desktop version has already been updated to support that, and so all we need is an update to the Android version. Then, you'll be able to connect to any machine over the Internet without fussing about with port forwarding that the like.
I remember Asus stating that support for the feature will be coming over the summer, and so we don't have long to wait. And I'm very impressed with how well the solution performs over wifi--I use it to watch TV via Windows Media Center on my desktop while my wife watches something else on the TV in the bedroom. It's as good as being at the desktop.

I enjoy remoting my pc which is on the second floor while I'm having a meeting on the 4th floor. you'll be the joke when you keep giving bad example.

You can go either way if the lack of the SD has no impact to you.
On the other hand, there is the support side of it, which was the major decision factor for me.
20,000 people on a Samsung Pad is good, and there may be some good XDA support.
200,000+ people on the Asus EEE Transformer with custom kernels and fixes before asus can even think about addressing them is the biggest factor when it comes to android based devices.
Its the same reason I was on the moment, and same for the Epic 4G. Tons of people, tons of community support, so anything that might be broken has an incredible chance of being actually addressed as people will take it into their own hands.
Plus the factor that Developers will support and ensure their software works on the devices with pure numbers.
Oh, and on the Splashtop chatter. Take a look at your running services, its already there "Splashtop Remote". Just be nice to be able to use it, or has someone figured out how we can use it already?

I had the same difficulty, though I was under the assumption that the Samsung had miniHDMI / MicroSD / USB ports. Of course I choose the transformer in the end because the extra battery / keyboard option is a nice addon though I don't plan on to buy but if i ever wanted more battery I'd know how to get it xD. The other thing that help me decide was that I personally believe ASUS has a better support staff for computing than Samsung, personal experience.
I walked into a Best Buy today and was looking for a TF, which of course they did not have. they had an Acer Iconia, so I went to go check it out. It was really heavy, and was wondering if the TF is similar in weight. Looking back, it might have been something attached to the Iconia that might've made it heavy, but I am not so sure. Also, all internals for Iconia/TF/Tab are all the same so they will perform similarly if used the same way, correct?
I had bought the Samsung Gtab 10.1 but returned it after two weeks when the Thrive came out.
Im kinda on the fence about If I should return it and go back to the Gtab 10.1

Things I think Samsung did better on:
better power/volume buttons (very hard to find on thrive)
speakers- are tons better then the thrive
screen- brighter, Gtab is now listed as the best tablet display, took the crown from the I Pad 2
Lighter- but afraid of dropping it because its so thin and slippery
battery life- is much better then the thrive.
So now we have support form XDA with our own forum section,
what are your thoughts? are you happy with it?
Do you think the Dev's will work on this, IE: custom rooted Rom's? (nothing better then a tweaked custom rom for a great user experience)

I've had the Thrive since about 2 days before the official launch and have been extremely happy with it. I think it has gotten even better over the last 2 weeks as root has already been achieved.
This is my first tablet, so I wouldn't feel right about doing any kind of in depth comparison with any other tablet, but I will say that from all the research I did before choosing the Thrive is that if you want svelte and sexiness this isn't the tab for you. If what you are after is some added functionality (i.e. the full array of ports and full size SD card slot) and don't mind a little extra chunkiness then it is a great tablet.

Sorry to disagree but I think the worst android tablet is way better then any I pad. My wife has the dam thing and I cant stand it, other then a fluid screen transition its about worthless, copy/paste never works, no flash for videos, no wifi widget available, no weather widget, apps suck, mostly because he is a control freak.

I am happy with my Thrive. I would not exchange it for anything currently.
The easy to hold aspect is dear to me.
The screen might look worse than the gtab side by side, but I don't see anything wrong with it myself.
I seldom use the speakers, I generally use headphones.
So from my perspective in an exchange I would be giving up an easy to hold tablet that I can easily hookup to my monitor and usb mouse/keyboard.
i am a tech guy majoring in engineering and this tanlet beats the others by functionality. Its isnt as sexy as others been thin and all, but it is sturdy, removable battery makes it worth it. I chose the thrive over the galaxy tab for the sheer functnality.

Does anyone have problems with there sd cards rebooting because you bump card while its inside port? or while thrive is in a case

Well I have decided to keep the Thrive and Not go back to the Samsung gtab, even tho the gtab's latest update skin looks pretty cool
Since Im keeping it I have ordered a screen protector, neoprene sleeve, green back cover and stylus pen.
Now if we could get a custom rom to rid us of the OS lag life would be great

I love the Full SD, Full USB, and I can see the potential of the AT100 ("Thrive" is already trademarked here in Australia), but the Aussie version is still stuck on version 3.0.1 of the OS. That version of the software is buggy as all hell! Random crashes, reboots and (of cause) the SOD abound.
While Toshiba have a good reputation for support, the fact that it's taken so long to being us into line with the rest of the world ... and every time we ask we get "very soon"; over a month of "very soon" is getting infuriating.

Just a question though ... there should be no issues putting this on the 3.0.1 tablet? There are no other supporting files that will get upset? (I'm not very experienced with Android and don't want to brick the device).

No, it should be no issue. Just remember to do a backup with CWM recovery before flashing the update. That way if it goes bad, you will be able to restore to stock.

Love my Thrive 16gb, I am around iPad's and not impressed at all. I am a Tech Coordinator and would prefer the android in the exchange enviorment with the Google Apps.
No problems with my sd card ejecting with or without case.
Hope you get a case soon...saw that someone has one for sale in the forum.
Loving my Toshiba, personally don't think theres THAT much of a difference between the screen on this and the other tabs, and if there is it really doesn't bug me because I think the screen is perfectly fine. The full sized USB port is really convenient for transferring files as well, because I use a Mac and it doesn't have an SD card slot and the Bluetooth manager keeps freezing.
Only real gripe is the bloody 3.1 update. It was originally due for July in Aus, then they said another week, and now they're saying another 2 - 4 weeks. So yeah, but besides that liking this thing lol.

I currently work with a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet (for about a year now) and as far as productivity is concerned it is great. The pen helps greatly for marking up drawings, making drawings, photo editing, etc. The problem with this tab however is that it is slow, buggy and poorly constructed. Has anyone compared these two? Here are some of the problems I have with the Thinkpad tablet that I hope were corrected with the the Note 10.1:
1) Start up is slow. 3-5 seconds to let me put in my pink to unlock the tablet.
2) Shoddy Construction. The power button has broken twice.
3) Pen is jumpy. I will be sketching and the pen will just stop writing occasionally and won't start again until I write on a different portion of the screen.
4) Slow. Internet browsing is slow, large PDFs search slowly.
I love and need the pen to work. My TPT was out of commission for 3-4 days and I suffered through it realizing that phones and iPads don't cut it (my wife has an iPad) for productivity. Can any other business professionals (or students) let me know how it's been? Also has anyone tested Quill on it yet? That's my favorite note taking application.
Also are the pens different in any way? Wacom vs active digitizer? This was something I'd always wondered as well, if pens on the upscale windows tabs were different than the one on the Flyer, TPT and now Note 10.1.
Well the tablet is not slow by any means and the pen is not jumpy and it seems pretty well constructed no screen bleed or creaking anywhere. You should get one from amazon or best buy to try out and if you don't like it just return it. Can't answer your question about the digitizer though I have no idea. But it works well for what it is.

I came from an OG G-Tab 10.1. All the original Teg2 tablets were slow. I'm not sure if you mean boot time or time for the lock screen to display after you hit the power button when the device is sleeping. If it's the latter it's pretty much instantaneous. From pressing restart until the lock screen appeared took 42 seconds.

Samsung tablets are built like tanks. There's a thread showing the Note torn down. You'll see its pretty well put together.

All other Anroid tablets have capacitive displays. The Note is inductive with a Wacom digitizer and palm rejection. It's an apples to oranges comparison.

Coming from a Teg2 device you'll be blown away. The browsing experience is near desktop quality.
I am a former Lenovo Thinkpad owner - after my first android tablet experience on the transformer prime, I found that the capacitative stylus allowed me nowhere near the amount of precision that I would be allowed with an active digitizer. Thus, I made the switch to the Lenovo Thinkpad based on the android community consensus that although the tablet didn't offer much, it did offer decent handwriting input via the integrated n-trig system. However, I soon got rid of it because I ran into many of the same problems you did. Having heard the news that a new tablet with an active digitizer was released, the Galaxy Note 10.1, I sprung $500 for it 3 days ago - the difference between the Thinkpad and the Note is night and day in all aspects. If you are on the fence, give it a try. I got mine at best buy knowing that they offer 30 day returns. Right now it is looking like I am keeping it.
You seem to have about all of the questions that I have had on my road to the Note; I'll try to answer them as best I can keeping in mind you are a thinkpad owner.
1) Start-up is FAST. Reboots are no problem. Unlocking the screen is quick as any modern android device.
2) This thing is beautifully constructed - slim and sexy. The Thinkpad is so bulky to me. You won't be replacing any parts on the Note - I'm fairly positive they're all staying in place
3) The stylus response, arguably the most important aspect in a Galaxy Note review, is magnificent. The pressure sensitivity is right on. As an added bonus, the integrated software, S Note, does a great job at capturing the Note's potential for taking notes. Just look up a youtube video of its features. I am currently taking good looking notes at near the speed of pen and paper ( it takes a little practice, as writing on any new medium might, to get precise with it). One thing you may be used to with the Thinkpad is the clicky clacky sound it makes against the tablet screen. The Note's stylus is very quiet.
4) It is a pretty fast tablet. Never have had a problem multitasking or handling large pdf's and a little more. For example; I am taking organic chemistry and I solely rely on the etextbook which is easily a 500 page pdf file. On top of this, I multitask with S Note either to the side or under it, copying information from the text to my note almost seamlessly. Minimal page lag for such a large file. Take note of the hardware - the note has 2GB Ram and a quadcore processor. It is going to be an improvement over the dated thinkpad tablet.
As for quill, I have not tried it yet. However, I have used S Note, Papyrus, and Lecture Notes thus far. S Note is wonderful for all of its features and that it can multitask in the OS. Papyrus has wonderful input, especially for sensing how hard you are pressing down and writing very accurately. But ultimately, S Note does the trick for me right now (Papyrus is missing a few key features at this stage in its development, but try it out if/when you get a Note tablet because it displays some things that the tablet really is capable of doing).
The stylus itself is much smaller than the Thinkpad stylus. Here it is really a matter of preference: to me it feels great in the hand. From what I hear, they sell accessory styli which have some sort of imbedded eraser but I don't know much about this. The Note stylus has a single button which in my opinion is a little bit to easy to accidentally touch, but this doesn't both me. So far the only use I have made of it is to take screenshots.
I should note that I actually prefer using the Note Stylus to navigate through the OS. It allows me a great deal of precision in clicking links that on other tablets I would have first had to pinch and zoom to accurately select. I even like typing with it, as the Note offers a smaller optional keyboard which is just the right size for accurately selecting what you want to type with it.
Like the Thinkpad, there is an integrated silo for putting the stylus in. It fits sleekly in the corner of the device.
As far as Wacom vs N-Trig, what I know is that they are similar technologies. Wacom is a little older, and has the reputation of being further along in its development. Don't discriminate on a tablet because it has one or the other technology - sometimes wacom is better; sometimes n-trig is better. You can't quantify which is better based on their name, but by how well they are implemented in the technology. You can easily say that you want to stay away from a capacitative system on a tablet, but you can't say you want to stay away from either ntrig or wacom because they are basically the same technology (active digitizers), to my understanding.
Lastly I should mention some things you haven't asked about.
- The speakers are some of the best I have found on any similar tablet ( they are front facing)
- The camera quality seems to be pretty much consistent with other competing tablets. Not the best, but not bad at all.
- The screen resolution is something people have griped about, but I think they screen looks beautiful personally. Sure it isn't ipad or tf infinity resolution, but it looks really good to me. On a scale of 1-5, it gets a 4 on the screen to me. Such a minor tradeoff for such accurate stylus recognition.
Above all, do your research before purchasing. As a student and casual artist, it fits my needs - like any technology it is going to make you wish you had something a little more. The Thinkpad let you do things no other android tablet could do at the time when it came out. The same can be said for the Note, but in so much more of a great way.

Hm. Mine is exactly like that -- "clicky clacky." Any of the pen tips depress a little bit if you press on it and it results in that constant clicking sound when using it. Is that normal? It's the only disappointment I've found as the pen on my Note phone is quiet just like you said.

I also have a Thinkpad Tablet and the SGN10.1.
While satisfied with the TPT and used it alot, the biggest reason I got the SGN was the TPT pen was too painful to use for long periods of time. The loose nib interfered with pressure accuracy and physical feedback and was very noisy.
The TPT tablet N-Trig pen is positionally more accurate than the SGN Wacom pen due to it's technology using direct contact between the pen and screen grid.
But the Wacom uses radio waves, like phased array radar, I think. If you draw lines with a ruler, you'll see distortions near the edges of the screen:

This is due to the Wacom radio waves being distorted by the metal LCD frame and other electronics. (And also why the other wacom tablets have such wide borders around them.)
Generally, this isn't a problem if you keep your art near the middle of the screen, but you will see the pen 'jump' or swerve in these areas.
(I used to have the Asus EeeSlate (EP121), which was horrible for pen accuracy and latencies. Asus support pointed to Wacom and visa versa. Frustrated, I sold it and got the TPT.)
The SGN comes with 2 types of nibs. The black one has some screen resistance and seems softer, while the white ones glide with little resistance. So, it's nice to have better physical feedback for better hand/eye coordination.
These nibs are smaller and shorter than the standard Wacom pen nibs. Other Pen-Enabled pens will work here, but they have longer nibs and are inaccurate when tilted.
FWIW, benchmarks comparing the Nvidia Tegra-3 with the Samsung Exynos Quad Core are here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=samsung_odroidx&num=1 The ODROID-X board has the same CPU as the SGN10.1.
(I also have the dual core Exynos and Tegra-2 development boards. The dual core Exynos and Tegra-2 perform about the same, both are 1GHz.)
Overall, I'm happier with the SGN because I'm more comfortable sketching with it.
EDIT: TPT Jumpy Pen - I see this a lot in Sketchbook Pro. It could be an app slowing down the input processes. But I did notice that the SGN cursor will move/update while SBP was choking on short strokes/tiny circles.
EDIT 2: GPS did not work on TPT, but works great on SGN10.1...
I have also a Lenovo TPT and I am only reading about the GN10.1.
For me it seems the only pros for the TPT are:
+ Full USB-Port
+ Full SD-Card Slot
+ Micro USB to connect quick to a PC or other Tablet
+ Micro HDMI out
+ Hardware Buttons (If you get root for fullscreen)
- Pen sometimes not working when palm rested, I need a glove for having no problems

and I guess the GN10.1 will be better there, but imo its still to early to say "all works fine" with GN10.1.

Also are the pens different in any way? Wacom vs active digitizer? This was something I'd always wondered as well, if pens on the upscale windows tabs were different than the one on the Flyer, TPT and now Note 10.1.

Well, I also have the TPT and I'm already considering selling my ThinkPad. I find everything to be better. That said, I may have gotten a Lenovo Lemon. It's going into repair for the final straw that broke my resolve - the back button fell off and cannot be reattached.
All things considered, I rate the GNote very highly. If you're going to do art on it, that's something I can't help with.
I used Quill, works great. I also tested Lecture Notes, Papayrus Beta, Color Notes, almost any note you can think of. Love the inking, my friend. LOVE it. The feel of the stylus is different, it's true, but I now prefer it. And, it's very quiet when writing.
GNote is light weight, but doesn't feel cheap. Looks good, both colors, tho' I prefer the gray. Speakers ROCK!, and I know you know what I mean, when talking about the TPT. Worst speakers ever there. Camera actually delivers sharp images, even the it's only a 5MP vs. Lenovo's 8MP.
Browsing for me is slow, but that's where I live and the provider I have. It's quite snappy to do all things. I've found no lag or force closes, except from Dolphin. LOL Some things never change.
All I can say is that Samsung did a great job with this tablet. It's no beast, like the TPT. If you drop it I'm sure you'll pay the price, but the screen, resolution, are all comparable. Very happy here.
ETA - GPS works! Less than a second and it was locked. That' Russian add-on, that I can't remember the name of, really works.

My TPT will also go to the repair-centre and if there are still problems I will get rid of it.
Good point with the robustness and i forgot also the "good grip" surface on the back of the TPT.
But with a good case for the Note in future, it will be protected and ready for carrying it to university, school or meeting etc...
(Did you try to get a GPS signal without 3G or Wifi support with the GN10.1? It can download additional data for getting its location quicker..)
There is a new Update on the Lenovo TPT which seems to fix the Pen-Problem.
If that is true I will keep it
( Working fine for its money and got enough connectors)

I think the whole line was lemons. And the whole line never was backed with intention of responsive software/Android OS support either. I'm getting ready to sell mine this week because the GNote blows it out of the water in every meaningful way. The only leg the TPT has up on the GNote in my opinion is the full-sized ports, but ultimately there are work-arounds.
As a note of irony, the comparisons of the TPT to the GNote on the Lenovo.com hosted TPT forum have reached the point where the moderators are closing the threads, deleting threads, censoring posts which praise the GNote (without indicating that the moderators edited them), and telling users to talk about it on Samsung's or other vendors forums. The irony is that seems Lenovo's support team is borrowing a page from the Chinese government on information control.
Here's a link to the Lenovo forum for the TPT, but the "subversive" threads have already been deleted. Sigh.

What do you know about if and which improvments are made with the newer production versions of the TPT?

FWIW, I think the only ones who wouldn't think the whole line was lemons, are those who don't own the GN. Once I tried the Note I was shocked at just how bad the TPT experience was.

So I've got my Gnote and I am a happy man. 30 mins to get up and running with all my old apps and dropbox sync.

I bought the tablet out of two main reasons. First of all my old Lenovo S10 netbook is dying slowly, so I need a replacement. Secondly I was interested in the Surface tablets, but their prices are way to high in my opinion. Obviously you get a lot for its price, but I do not really need an i7 processor in my tablet. My tablet should be powerful, but does not need to be too much, since for main tasks I still use my bigger main computer. Then my focus got on the Onda V975W tablet. I bought it at eFox for roughly 195€ with sending (slow registered air mail) und customs insurance. Although I chose slow sending, the parcel already arrived two and a half weeks later. Let’s start with the specs:

Items delivered:
The tablet was delivered in a worthy looking box with chinese texts on it. Additionally to the tablet itself, not much was given beside. Just a short chinese manual and a charger (5V, 2.5A according to the label). There was no Windows 8.1 or Windows 365 license card put in beside, which was reported to be the case in other boards. On a request the shop answered that this would be simply not part of the product. Since I already have an unused Windows 8 license, this is not a big downside for me, but for people without this could become a hurdle when they want to reinstall Windows.
First impressions:
After the unboxing I was very surprised of the worthy look of the tablet. It is really a look-a-like of the iPad Air (so much, that even iPad Air cases can be used mostly, more on that later). The front has a camera in the top middle inside the white border. I did not try the back- or the front camera yet, I will update this later.
The back is made from brushed aluminium. It feels nicely cool when touched. On the bottom there are stereo speakers. Above them, there are product details lasered in, pretty much like at the iPad. At the top side the HW buttons are placed: Power and the volume rocker. Both seem worthy and have a nice pressure point.
At the top side the ports are placed: MicroSD, MicroHDMI, MicroUSB and headphone jack. Additionally a microphone.
First use:
I already prepared myself, that the tablet arrives in chinese language. At least that was reported for most of the V975W of the latter generations. But my Windows was already changed to english (at least most parts) and an user account called “as” was set up. And wow, the resolution looks amazing! No pixels can be determined at all on the Retina display. A few tweaks later also the last parts of remained chinese language were gone. Also the newest BIOS and drivers were installed. So I started and installed some programs like Thunderbird and Firefox and was happy, since everything ran smoothly. The CPU usage while Idle is at about 0-3%, while about 40-45% of the RAM is used. The latter one can be still optimised, for the case that no applications which heavily use the GPU are used. That’s the case, since the GPU splits up 500 MB of RAM by default. It is said that this can be reduced to 256 MB without problems, but I haven’t tried it yet. A small downside is the small internal memory, since with Windows installed there are just about 11 GB free by default. That’s why I installed most of the programms on my 64 GB microSD card.
Usage:
The touch display responds quick and after a bit getting used to, Windows 8 can be nicely navigated by touch. Just the typing I do not really like on the display. That is why I wanted to have a kind of “Type Cover” from the Surface for my V975W. Good point here, that the V975W is so close to the iPad Air, that even many cases fit. Anyhow, my first try failed. I ordered a keyboard case from Anker for the iPad Air (“Slim Folio Bluetooth Keyboard Case”). With a bit force it fitted, but not really nicely. But the second try worked out. For about 22€ I bought this case with bluetooth keyboard and it sits perfect! Just the ports can not be perfectly reached, so I cutted a small hole for the microUSB (see last picture). Also the backcamera does not sit perfectly over the hole, but this does not bother me, since I never really understood the sense of backcameras for tablets .
The keyboard can be removed (holds via magnets) and the top cover can be moved to the back, very nice for using while sitting.
The keyboard can nicely be used for typing. In fact, I am writing this article on this keyboard. After a few seconds of not using it, it goes into sleep mode and the first keyboard hit is ignored while waking up, but all in all it has a nice respond.
Battery:
The battery I can not really rate yet. According to the shop it has a capacity of 7.8 Ah. The charging takes many hours, also with the delivered charger. At normal usage the battery holds for about 6-7h. Obviously it has to be considered, that the display has a very high resolution and it has a full Windows. I will still make some tests for the battery and will update this part later.
First conclusion:
I do not want to give a final conclusion yet, since this Windows 8 tablet has so many aspects which I did not test yet and might still change my opinion. Untill now I am fully satisfied with my decision. I could not find any other tablet with preinstalled Windows and such a high resolution for this price. As an alternative for a cheap “china-Surface” it pretty much fits my needs (except the internal memory).
It does look nice! But yeah, that 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (those are OK stats for a smartphone, but kind of crap otherwise; my first-gen RT tablet has more) is a deal-killer for me. Thanks for the review though! You may want to mention the MicroSD slot in the feature list at top (better than an iPad in that way!)

Ive had my v975w for just over a month now and i love it. its more than met my expectations.
its fast, well designed and battery life is very good for a windows device.
My only compliant is the micro usb is used for charging so you cant use micro usb and charge at the same time but am thats fairly common across a lot of tablets.
i now look at my desktop pc and think "should i pack that away" as i dont see the need for it anymore. (i ditched pc gaming years ago) but i feel cruel abandoning my trusty old pc like ive betrayed it, even though its just a machine, lol am weird i know

the one ive ordered is different. that is a USB hub within the OTG cable. ive ordered a OTG thats split, female micro USB for charge and normal female USB for OTG.
was only £1.50 so not much lost if it doesnt work. fingers crossed
any luck with cases?
Ive ordered a bluetooth Keyboard cover that is meant for the ipad air. not arrived yet but hoping it fits ok with the design being identical to the ipad air

assume you mean when its closed. no it doesnt seem to but the is also a little on/off switch on the keyboard so you can just turn it off when your closing it.
only complaint is: the is a backspace button but no delete button, so you cant press ctrl+alt+del to access the task manager but luckily windows 8 has made is easier to access the task manager without pushing ctrl+alt+del.

Yes, I have the same problem with the Task Manager . Still want to make an alternative shortcut for it, but for now I am just using a shortcut on the desktop.
