[Q] Attempting to get Google services back

Ok, so I managed to get my fire rooted again after the 6.2 update with little to no problems. However, my gmail, market, etc is still broken. I've tried reinstalling the apks to no avail. It won't even install the google framework at all. I have ESFile Explorer & just gave it root access, but that's not helping me too much, since I don't know what I'm doing. If someone has some steps to try, I'm up for it.

1. Mount /system as rw
2. Copy the google framework.apk to /system/apps
3. Set permissions to rw- r-- r--
4. Install the google framework.apk (This is how I was able to keep my gapps functiong after the update. I think this will install it under /data/apps. You don't have to install since anything in /system/app runs a boot, but it will probably help in avoiding to have to re-do this after every update.)
5. Reboot
6. Follow the regular install steps for the .apks you want to add.
7. Make sure /system is read only when you're done.
These are pretty much just a reprint of the steps from this thread. So I would take a look at it.
I don't use ESFile Explorer so I can't help you with specific actions, just the general ones. Sorry!

I did everything, using root access on ES File Explorer. No dice. All the APKs are in the system/app folder. The still refuse to install. I still get "application did not install" on all of them.

Change the permissions on the apps in /system/app as he said above. Reboot. Done.

I don't have any options to change permissions, but they are the same as all the other apps in the folder.

If your like me and you have had some problems with android market on your Kindle Fire (yes,I got one for christmas and its already rooted ) by following a guide with Vending.apk and though you can browse the market, it is stuck on Starting Download, I have found a solution to the problem... All you need to do is get a new file:bit.ly/tlWjSn
This file is simply an updated version to the Vendor.apk other tutorials provide.
All you do is the following(presuming you have rooted, got root explorer and GO launcher):
1.Copy the file to kindle at an easy to access location.
2.Long-Hold the file and tap move.
3.Navigate to / then system then app.
4.Set it to R/W mount (top left)
5.Paste the file.
6.Set the permissions like all other files(tick first 2 in first row, first 1 in second row and first 1 in third row then tap ok)
7.Reboot the device
8.Go onto GO launcher and add it to the screen (tap the list thing bottom middle of the screen,then tap Add. then select Application followed by Market)
9.Done! Enjoy!

When I browse folders while connected to a computer (using Win7), the system folder is hidden.
I never installed Root Explorer on the Fire. Is there a way for me to download and install it directly, or will I need to side load it? I assume if it's in the Market I'll need to side load.

Unfortunately you will as far as I know, but for $3.99, it is VERY useful when rooting or installing app's. market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&hl=en

Hello guys, I have a little question related to market app that maybe has been already answered so I won't start a new thread.
I have my KF with 6.2.1 rooted and with the full android market installed (EX launcher and so on).
Usually the market works fine, but I always get errors ( process com.android.vending has stopped unexpectedly) and consequent force closes even if I can download stuff and apps. Basically, it happens whenever the market takes an action.
Is it a known issue or ir it "normal" ?

For me, I am having problems copying the Vending.apk to /system/app folder. I follow the steps in that tutorial but when I paste the.apk in the folder nothing happens. Help??
Got it rooted last night, and I'm using file expert since my cheap ass doesn't want to buy root explorer.

I'm afraid that without Root Explorer you can't change the /system/app folder permissions from R/O to R/W, therefore you can't paste anything in that folder.

File expert gives you that option too though.

if ur rooted but it wont paste or read and write in root explorer then ur su wasnt pushed properly in ur root process! When i rooted my kindle i deleted my old su and did the whole root process from scratch when i got the new root process. The whole thing went smooth and su showed up in apps when done but it wasnt totally rooted as i couldnt read or write in root explorer. Jcase told me that when the adb command for pushing the su wasnt done right thats what happens. he fixed it for me, great guy.

Google play force close help!

Hi, i have rooted my kindle fire recently ( i had to do it manually because the KFU failed to root it) and installed the google framework and google play APK's manually.
but whenever i try to purchase an app, it force closes. and then it force closes every time after that when i try to open it again. when i go to clear the app data for it it will open again, but will still force close when i try to download an app
i also tried to install the app market version 3.4.4, but that always force closed as soon as i tried to open it
maybe i didnt root it right or maybe its not even rooted? how can you tell if its rooted properly. it als wont let me push anything to /system/. it says its read only or something
Edit: nevermind, i solved it. i had to put the kindle into recovery mode, mount /system/ using clockwork recovery, and then push the vendor.apk and install it while still in clockwork recovery

I have the same thing going on. Can you elaborate a little more. How did you push it while in recovery? Did you have to make it a zip? I can only find zip files to open and since it isn't a zip I can't find another way to open the file.

I was using the Stock rooted. I followed the first part of the thread and it didn't work for me so I followed the second part and this is were I get lost:
8 - Under "Path settings" Check the box "Up to Root"
9 - Under "Root settings" Check the box "Root Explorer" Tap "yes" on the popup and tap "allow" on the super user window.
10 - Under "Root settings" check "Mount File System"
11 - now your ready to copy the files. Tap back to go back to the sdcard. Tap "Select" on the top toolbar. Select by taping the three .apks you copied over. Once all three are selected Tap "Copy" on the top toolbar
12 - Tap "Up" on top toolbar. Tap "system". Tap "app" and Finally tap "Paste" on top toolbar.
13 - Reboot your kindle and you should now have the Market working on your kindle.
Root Explorer is not there? hmmm, I must be missing something.

in es file explorer -> settings -> scroll down to the section root options ->
first point is root-explorer -> second point is something with file system -> check both

Assuming you have es file explorer installed just do what b63 said so file explorer will have write permissions on the kindle and drag and drop those 3 apks that were in that link 2nd page into the system/app folder and than reboot.... dont try to install them or anything like that just drop them in the app folder and reboot

Thanks guys I got it. I should have made my name NoobCake. What I was missing was....
I didn't understand that I needed to hit the little system folder next to the back arrow at the bottom of the Kindle to check the Root boxes. Once I found that it went great and Market is working good.

[Q] Unrooting a phone without USB?

I rooted my phone with Motochopper.
Since then, the phone has failed to connect to my computers via USB. I'd like to take the phone in and have it looked at, but I'm a bit concerned about what they'll say when they see the "Custom" unlock icon on the boot screen.
Is there a way to un-motochop my phone without using USB?

Step 3: Click Tools -> Root Explorer
Step 4: Click Mount R/W and select RW for all options and click OK
Step 5: Click / on top

Step 7: Reboot

I'm a little worried... I long-clicked on Busybox and selected delete, and it appears that quite a few files were deleted. The only file left in /system/xbin is "dexdump"
Is that correct? I don't want to reboot until I can verify this.

NOOO thats not correct, you deleted all files, you will be bricked for sure, i suggest you backup your stuff a prepare to restore thru odin

Download ES File Explorer from Play, delete the Xbin stuff first and then delete the superuser. Then do a factory reset and you should be all set.
Unless you have a custom recovery, then you'll have to odin your device.

Thank you, Pat and Aou. The process worked; after deleting the files and uninstalling the app and performing two reboots my phone no longer shows the open padlock with the "Custom" badge. I did not need to do a 'factory reset' of any kind.
From the little research I did, I'm guessing that all of those files that disappeared when I deleted BusyBox were symlinks to the deleted file.

Good, i'm really happy to hear you didnt screw up the phone, i think it's the first time see somebody delete the content of their system folder and get away with it

[TUT] Disable OTA on 4.5.2 + Install GApps

Edit: Sorry for not maintaining this thread for a long time (rl stuff) but after all I really recommend you switching to LineageOS. It's very straightforward, you have full Play Store and Amazon access and a smooth, nice, customizable and clean android. Also you don't have to worry about your device getting incompatible to the Play Store^^ or bricking your device by accidental updates.
Srsly, don't do anything below here. It's old and not supported anymore. Also before doing anything to your tablet: Unlock the Bootloader here
So you finally rooted your Kindle Fire HDX 7/8.9 on 4.5.2
and you want to start using it but remembered that amazons updates kill everything, searched for a method to bypass it and fortunately found this thread.(You Sir are very lucky)
So lets start:
1. How to disable OTA updates
Step 1:
Get a file explorer which has root access (I used ES File Explorer because it was already in the Amazon App Store but every other file explorer should work too)
Step 2:
Browse to /system/priv-app/ and search for DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk
Step 3:
Just rename DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk to whatever you like (Important: After renaming the file mustn't end with .apk)
Step 4:
Profit! You can now access the internet freely without the fear of evil amazon updates
But you want to install apps on your Kindle so
2. How to install Google Play Apps
Step 1:
Aquire the GApps for KitKat. Preferably here
Step 2:
Extract it to your Kindle and copy everything except for PrebuiltGMSCore.apk, META-INF and addon.d in the similar system folder (apps in system/app folder go to system/app folder (the real one))
Step 3:
Install PrebuiltGMSCore.apk manually like you would install any normal apk
Step 4:
Reboot (eventually it takes a bit longer)
Step 5:
PROFIT!!!! You have a fully working Play Store!
Obviously i don't take any responsibility if anything goes wrong (even though this procedure should be pretty safe)

Worked great but for some reason on my kindle hdx 7" running 4.5.2 when I booted up the SetupWizard came up to select my language and then when I clicked the big arrow it dumped me into the wireless settings screen and I was stuck. I had to eventually remove /system/priv-app/SetupWizard.apk. You might want to recommend users not including this as well on the off chance it causes the same problem I had. After I fixed this I just clicked on the play store and it prompted me to login.

Yes you can copy everything, just look out for /priv-app/PrebuiltGMSCore.apk (If you try to copy it you'll get a memory error)

How did you remove /system/priv-app/SetupWizard.apk

After doing this to get gapps, I am receiving license error when attempting to play amazon instant videos. Any ideas?
Edit: obviously did something to drm as I can't access kindle books either.
Anyone know a way to fix? Thanks

Never mind I rename SetupWizard.apk to SetupWizard.apk.old this is what I did
adb shell "su -c 'mount -o rw,remount /system'"
adb shell "su -c 'mv /system/priv-app/SetupWizard.apk /system/priv-app/SetupWizard.apk.old'"
adb shell "su -c 'mount -o ro,remount /system'"

Is there a recommendation on installing the gapps via this method, versus the HDXposed method?

It sounds like this is easier and slightly less risky.

Doesnt work on my Apollo. I downloaded GAPPS 036 (320DPI) and follow your steps. But it doesn't work and I cannot copy phonesky.apk, i have to manually install it. I copied system folder using ES Explorer. Do I have to set permit for files??

I had issues when I tried ES Explorer. I used Root Explorer with no issues. Also, make sure to set perms to RW R R to match other files in all the directories.

Did you get an error message?

Notifications not working
Anyone else having problems not receiving notifications? I am not receiving notifications about updates from google play and I am not receiving notifications from apps where they have been enabled. I took a quick look at some test apps on the store and I never receive the notifications through those apps either. Below is a log cat from a test notifications app. I did some reading and it seems to suggest maybe the individual apps are not configured correctly but I will need to keep digging. Will keep digging, just not very familiar with c2dm so wanted to ask.

@riggsandroid: I tried root explorer and set permissions, same results.
@Potato_of_Doom: It closed without message. On the first boot, I can log in my account but after the home screen loading, PlayStore closed without warning. next time playstore close without warning (very fast). It is seem another Google service still working except playstore. I can log in to my play games account and load Clash of clans data without problems.

@tuanda82 I had similar issues when I didn't remember to install the GMS Core apk after moving all files over. Just a thought.

Discovered a fix. I had to install Xposed and HDXposed. This leads me to wonder whether the technique used to install gapps with HDXposed might not be the better and safer solution if notifications only work with HDXposed. Anyone else have notifications working without HDXposed installed? After looking through the HDXposed code it looks like this is probably the only solution but maybe I am missing something.

I don't want to confuse anyone, but you really don't want to overwrite the folders, just add files to their corresponding location within their like-named partition directories.
If you are comfortable with adb shell commands, I find it easiest to actually move all the folders from the zip into the data or a newly created system folder & then use batch scripts that take advantage of the * wildcard call, such as *.apk, to change ownership & permission setting to 644 for all files at one time. I don't have time to list it all out all the steps right now, but if you have been playing with adb for a while, you probably already know what I am talking about. You can also do the same thing, live in the system folder, but I personally like to segregate the new files so I can check several & then move them all over at once, after I am confident all the changes were made via the shell commands.

2. How to install Google Play Apps
Step 1:
Aquire the GApps for KitKat. Preferably here
Step 2:
Extract it to your Kindle and copy everything except for PrebuiltGMSCore.apk, META-INF and addon.d in the similar system folder (apps in system/app folder go to system/app folder (the real one))
Step 3:
Install PrebuiltGMSCore.apk manually like you would install any normal apk
Step 4:
Reboot (eventually it takes a bit longer)
Step 5:
PROFIT!!!! You have a fully working Play Store!

There's another way to get working playstore:
You need enough system store to flash gapps by recovery. To get this, change some system apps to user apps (for example by titanium backup). Don't do this with 'really' system apps, but there are many Amazon apps, you can change (for example kindle reader, music, audible). You can still use these apps after change. Then you can flash with twrp a small gapps package.
