+1...........................................................m with u

If it will be usable (so I guess we will have to wait for HC 3.2 anyway) then 60 USD will still be much cheaper than buying new device (not to mention that there is no other 5 inch screen smartphone and no, I am not buying anything with smaller screen ).
So, count me in

Put me down for $30, maybe more for full RC, no bugs.

count me too

Ill post up 100.00 if they can fix the volume for bluetooth and aux jack. of all the phones ive tested the bluetooth volume and syc suck along with aux volume output.
id like ice cream or the latest stable build

30USD OR 2 Bitcoin (that should make 200USD now in total paypal alright?) for any honeyc build that has
a) usable, everyday speed
b) Bluetooth phone communication is working
(yes I am happy to wait for whatever 3.x version is workable or available)
question / suspicion tho: in the streak 7 forums I read the insane increase in DPI needed, to make the high res apps usable... the streak 5 might not be able to supply the minimum res....
and AMEN to "I wont buy a smaller screened phone"

DJ_Steve wrote on twitter that he had to set DPI to 80 on Dell Streak 5 to make google apps work in Honeycomb. Streak has default 160, so you can imagine how small everything was
However, I heard that Honeycomb 3.2 should support smaller tablets, so I guess we just have to wait for HC 3.2
And another thing - does somebody now if HC is supporting phone functions at all (call, messages etc.)? I hope that I will be able to make calls with my HoneyStreak

Count me in. 30$, more if it is working well!

Isn't this a bit tacky to say the least? You give what you can most of developers could charge us from the get go and don’t. Plus a bounty for something that does not exist is useless anyways.
GB, HC, etc are dependent on propriety software that Dell is not authorized to release (Dell recently removed GB from their open source web page). Are there ways around it, sure, but a couple hundred bucks for someone to sit down with a blank screen and write the audio code is not going to do it. Have supervised projects that require specialized code to be written; 1. Does not happen overnight 2. More than one writes the code for minimum 8 hours a day for weeks on end. 3. More errors than successes 4. Alpha’s can and will brick your device 5. Beta’s can go through multiple iterations (just think Windows, which version ever came out without constantly needing patches) 6. Just when you think you have it right a life event happens to your key developer. 7. When you release it, people still piss and moan it is not right/what they wanted/what they expected and demand their money back. 8. Could go on, but you get the gist of my discussion.
In closing for this to ever become reality, will require complete HC Alpha (or better) for the Streak 5 from Dell as the start point. Am I crushing dreams, no, just telling you how it is.

Damn audio drivers, if we at least know who is the owner of them.
I see, that HC 3.2 is out and there is support for 7-inch displays (maybe usable on Streak?) and support for Qualcomm chips... maybe it can be ported?

Is there even code for honeycomb that would work on arm?
most of whats been hacked together by steve for s5 is from the sdk, emulator images..
there is no phone support in HC
rather than a silly fund, why not spend the time investigating how to do this for your selves, its android the information is out there for you to find and read..

To tell the truth, I am thinking about it, I have some spare time right now and I just want to try it. But I am not sure if it is even possible or if there is some insolvable problem like with porting MIUI/CM roms (no audio drivers from Dell).

It's threads like this that make you wonder what Dell is thinking. Even with all their screwups, if they got on the stick and provided decent support for this phone they could sell a ton of them. As it is, with this as an example, who would ever buy another Dell phone? I'll nurse this one along simply for the screen real estate and because I love the Google freebies, but I won't ever buy another of their phones.

well i have no experience finding out how to root a device, but i am more than happy messing around in a command line and cooking my own roms. but tbh i wouldn't be surprised if this came with a 100% unlocked boot loader and possibly 100% rooted. so hopefully it should just be a simple job of cooking up some roms, well lets just hope

I received my unbranded m001 yesterday. unfortunately it isn't unlocked. But I'm working on figuring out the boot loader mechanism. ADB doesn't seem to find it when I connect it to my computer via the supplied USB cable but I'm still hopeful. I'll post what I can figure out.

is yours the ipad fake or the white one? and does it have market on it?
Had I know of the Ipad fake I would have opted for it ,.but no, its the white one. It does have a market app but not the Android market. So the market enabler or a custom firmware will be needed to make this device really shine. Of course they might release a firmware update when it hits a more mass market status but I wouldn't count on it.
More info about the device.
I was wrong about it not having root access. Seems the file system is wide open. I went ahead and made a su command in /system/bin for good measure but I am still having trouble running programs that require root level access to the system. USB debugging is on but I'm not sure its running.

thanks dude i might contacts one of the guys that sells them on ebay and be a checky bugger and ask for a promo one that i can review and then link everyone to his account to buy them, could just work
I've sent an e-mail to Eken regarding future software updates...and they completely ignored it and sent me a request to fill out a sale form (how many units I want, address, etc) and they will provide me with "rock bottom price with high quality"
I'm on the edge of getting the M001 just to play around with because it's so cheap, but the Archos 7 Home Tablet has a few features that are just so tempting and the price isn't too much higher (199$).
To those of you who have this already: Does this device support multitouch? The descriptions say it's got a capacitive touch screen, but Chinese knockoff product descriptions are always very sketchy.

i think i read somewhere that one of them had multi touch but then one contradicted that and said it had a resistive touch screen, but tbh multi touch isn't always that much better just as long as its a pretty good quality resistive it isn't that much more work than using a capacitive
Well, if the M001 has a capacitive multitouch-capable screen it would appeal to me more than the higher quality, more storage space Archos 7HT. The A7HT has a resistive screen, 8GB of NAND, 7-8 hours of battery life. M001 has 2 hours battery, 2GB storage, and an unknown touch screen
well i emailed one of the dudes from ebay hopefully he might see sense and give me one for free but i doubt it

Honeycomb ROM, are we going to let the nook guys beat us?

Picture me in the braveheart costume for this: the nookcolor has an early port of honeycomb working already. They skipped right over froyo and gingerbread, how dare they! The nook isn't even a true android tablet, I say we fight, show them what a real 3.0 tablet looks like! Who's with me?
Seriously though, any gen 8 devs have an idea here? I'm aware the full SDK isnt even out but can we do it? I'm not a programmer but i pledge my time and brain to the cause. I'd even throw $20 to the dev.
I can draw a boot screen for it in MS Paint.
I bought my 101 knowing that Froyo would be acceptable, but hoping that there would be community support to bring Gingerbread along too.
Not going to happen on the 70 until source is out. The emulator image won't run at the 70's resolution. The launcher just crashes. Could happen on the 101 though. I only have the 70 so not much i can do to help with that device.
LOL. I was coming here to post the exact same question.
I hope that Archos understands that They need to be proactive with respect to pushing new versions of Android. I have a Moto Cliq, and Motorola hasn't even tried to push Froyo out yet. It is so annoying to be a step behind everyone else. I hope Archos isn't going to take the same approach.
If you look closely you will see that the honeycomb in there is running on a 2.6.29 kernel.
So there schould be no real problem.
When the full SDK Source code is released can we expect a ROM? I really hope so, although I'm fairly confident Archos will follow through and give us an official release.
I blame availability (Nook is about everywhere). Hopefully in the upcoming days I will be donating my Archos to a group of people who do AOSP work.

Won't we need a custom bootloader before we can load a new ROM? Isn't is b/c Archos has signed and encrypted the actual "ROM" layer of Android that we can't flash our own ROMs?
From my understanding, and someone please correct me if I am wrong since I'm just learning, Archos has file system protections on Application Framework, the Andriod Runtime, and the Libraries but has unlocked the Kernel layer in the SDE for us (http://developer.android.com/guide/basics/what-is-android.html) . Essentially we can adjust how the hardware interacts with their mostly vanilla versions of Eclair and Froyo but can't change what is a majority of what people call the "ROM". It seems that $auron and a few others are gifted with finding ways to change the way the ROM functions by programming at the Kernel level.
Of course, this is what I've pieced together from tons of different sources so I'm open to someone correcting me...
With SDE we can boot just about anything as long as it has the drivers to play nice with the hardware in the Archos. A version of Android built for tablets would be relatively easy compared to some of the schemes people have been trying.
What you say is true for most devices, but giving us the SDE side of things was a real nice gift by Archos. Basically they handed us the keys and told us if we broke it we bought it, which is what a lot of people have been asking the manufacturers of other devices to do for a long time.

Moved to general as not android development
If you look at the video that was just posted for the streak it "looks" like they got it working by somehow telling the launcher to launch at a different resolution from the screen so a lot of stuff is off screen on the launcher.
From what I could see from tinkering with the 70 and the sdk the launcher itself will crash if you try to start it up at 800x480. I'm not sure if that can be fixed without source but I'm not an expert in Launchers. People have managed to get a rom to work on a phone by replacing the launcher but that's not the gingerbread experience we would want on our tablets so what's the point in that?
I'm sure once the source is available for the launcher it'll be easy to get a rom on here.

Just had an idea, using this as a basis of the idea...
Could we (and when I say we, I mean a dev who can actually do this kinda stuff) do a similar thing, but instead of changing the resolution, change the LCD density?
I am not sure if this would work at all, but the theory is this:
If LCD density is changed, you have the appearance of a higher resolution, this generally messes with standard launchers in bad ways. However, if the standard launcher is messed up out of the screen (i.e. as if parts are on non-existing pixels off screen) could this mixture of events work in our favour?
I am not a dev, so this is probably a worthless idea, but thought I'd get it out there just in case its not as worthless as I expect it to be.

Give me some reasons why I should get a Xoom and trade my iPad 2

I want to hear from Xoom users some advantages on getting the Xoom. I currently have an iPad 2 and it's cool but there is no JB for it yet. I saw some articles on Google IO today and was amazed at the USB host support which would make it awesome for emulators.
What are some advantages you guys think would be? I currently own an Evo so I'm familiar with Android. I'm more interested in knowing the cool things you can do with it. I found someone in CL who is interested in trading his Xoom for my iPad 2. Thanks.
Reason #1, it gets you away from Kool-Aide drinking mac-bots who think everything has to be white.
Anyone else have a constructive response?

Those of us who show our loyalty to google will be rewarded with land and women once the takeover is complete.
Additionally, flash is neat, USB hosting, I'm fairly siked about google music. Greater customization. I'd wait to see how 3.1 runs but it looks very promising in the dev notes.
you are not bound to itunes, you can customize your UI, your notifications wont interrupt you, its positioned to be compatible with a ****load of other devices, hdmi ready, amazon and sony love android

One thing I hate about the iPad 2 is the camera. I took a picture of my daughter up close and it was so blurry I thought she was a UFO. I think it's rated at under 1MP.

Plenty of tablet apps and "tegra HD" apps available.
Also, pretty much every app I've tried that didn't specify Honeycomb support worked anyways. the "HD" games are spectacular (youtube "pinball HD honeycomb" ... it's 2.99 USD (2.84 CDN haha) and it rocks.

I actually purchased the Ipad 2 and received it about 2 weeks ago. It took me less than a week to call Apple and request and return package. I then went into Best buy and purchased a Xoom.
Here are the reasons why:
- FLASH: I watch videos online all the time, and most of them are sites that use flash
- Being able to just download a mp3, an image, or even videos right from the browser and save it wherever I want to
- Being able to open the downloaded file with the app I want
- Being able to connect my Xoom to my PC at work and transfer whatever file I want
- Being able to customize my homescreen to my liking
- Notifications
- Widgets (I just hated that fact that I always had to go to the settings to activate bluetooth or wi-fi for example
- Now with Honeycomb 3.1 announced, I'm really not regretting buying the Xoom

In short, it's not quite a slick as the iPad 2 and there are nowhere near enough tablet specific apps, but imo the browser is better, it's more customizable, google maps is far better as is the multi-tasking. But you should know that HD videos will require re-encoding due to the Tegra2 chip and it's limitations.
I think the biggest reason you have already mentioned in your post.
Jail-break.
iPad2 is a Jail. It needs to be broken.
I used to be an iPhone user (3GS and 4G).
I am sick of being told you should do things this way and if you don't , you are screwed.
Xoom and all other android device brings me "freedom" in what I OWN.
Specifically in terms of functions
0. Flash
1. You get much better camera (5mp back, 2mp front facing)
2. You have the rights to root it, install customized roms/themes
3. You can install third party apps freely.
4. You can flash kernels to overclock your CPU to 1.5Ghz while iPad 2 is stuck at 1G max
5. You have strong Dev community to create stuff. as long as there is a need. Apparently it requires certain level of computer proficiency but from what you mentioned, you definitely have it.
6. You have google rolling out more and more exciting updates and with an open source concept, the market share of Android will bypass iOS by much and developer community will definitely notice this part of the market and create apps (commercial apps) around it.
7. many apps you know what is going on because you can see source code.
8. To someone who may worry that iPad apps are more than Honeycomb apps, I think at the current rate of brining new apps to platform, it wont be a problem a few months later at all.
9. Oh, you can install and dual boot Ubuntu in it.

Not that I disagree, but the iPads, iPhone, and last two Touches have bluetooth. They all have memory as well, just no way to expand it.
Yes but you can't send files or contacts unless you jailbreak and pay for fancy apps.
Why don't they send it out without a sound driver so we have to jailbreak and pay for it too?

I know it's fun to bash Apple but tbh, I think the iPad iOS is far superior to HC.
The tablet experience even on the original iPad is sooo much nicer.
Why do u have an Acer tablet I hear u ask. Cos I have a weird requirement in that I want to have mouse support for RDP.
Tbh, if Apple ever gave the iPad proper mouse support (without jailbreaking), there's no way I'd use HC it's so buggy. They never will tho.
Can't send files to it? Pretty much every single half decent app has a multitude of ways to send over files to it.
For example, Goodreader can use GDocs, Dropbox, other file repositories, wifi, ftp.... you just type the IP into your browser, select your file and press upload.
Even on my Acer, I use that kind of facility if I am in a wifi zone cos it's faster than using memory stick.
Not quite sure why people are talking about paying for iOS updates. Haven't had to pay for a single update since iPads came out.
My point is, don't be critical about iOS/iPad when HC is so buggy that it's laughable. I'm sure some of you will say, but HC has only been out 6 months... but what's that go to do with the price of fish?
I also wonder if we'll be able to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich when that comes out (which I'm guessing is what HC should have been if Google hadn't rushed it).
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Google fanboy. I got rid of MS Exchange at work and implemented Google Apps 2.5 years ago and never looked back.
But to say that HC is as slick as iOS.... not even close.
please stay on the humor tone

There's no proper way to send files to it. I come from the dial-up age and although you might not realize it wi-fi and 3G isn't everywhere and it always costs money.
For people who do get out much (eg. photographers) Bluetooth, SD cards and USB ports are essential.
For office rats and students they also matter. Don't know ab your teachers but mine were always reluctant to share emails and phone no's. We always got the learning materials via USB sticks.
Also when having bluetooth, why upload and wait for the other lamer to download? Ever heard of streaming?
Then there's smoothness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn3duaQhIOA
See, I don't need an app for that, there's already a cool widget, so no, dragging around a few desktops that work and fell like windows 95 is not smooth for me.
It was ok 15years ago and with a keyboads. On a tablet I need more.
Translation first post.

Don't you think the comic itself is "flaming", too ?
One could create a comic where the iPad wins all over the Iconia.
Still nice to see a comic about tablets, thanks for sharing and translating!
edit: regarding the flames in a joke thread: i am so waiting for the day when people will finally realize that no product is perfect and everything has its pro's and contra's, depending on the user's needs.
not sure i will live that long

i just dont like apple products due to their fan base, see they join forums deciated for another product and tell them that the product they like is bad and udderly useless.

see the slight difference between humor and flame is not given to everyone.
sometimes making fun of someone seems to be sooooooo baddddd...
well.
and sure someone could make something reversing the situation and I will laugh same.
I do like when "comparison" occur with real life situation it's more funny than reading
"my device is the best, yours is a ****"
Note: and this cartoon has been published by ACER Thailand themselves...

Any other devs for the A7/A7+?

Just wondering if there were any other developers willing to work on the A7 or (more preferably) the A7+. Dexter seems to have quit or lost interest his development permanently on either devices (I think he doesn't have a physical device to work with anymore, but I don't remember where I heard this). The last time he logged on to Tablet Roms was on "04-27-2012", and the last time he logged on to XDA was, well, today actually but he doesn't seem to have any interest in the eLocity forum section. He DID leave us with quite a lot of quality ROMs to work with, especially since the kernel was released for the + in March.
If there aren't any developers willing to work with the A7/A7+ because they don't have a physical device, I would willingly offer remote testing on my A7+ (AKA they give me the compiled ROM(s) or whatever and I try it out and give feedback). It just seems like such a shame to leave both devices with nothing better than a buggy (but still awesome) Honeycomb or a working stock 2.2. ICS seems like it would be doable, again especially since the kernel was released.
I will try to contact the user "chinabull" in the referred link as he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he said "It seems to have all the driver source code we need."
And I have also posted this over at TR.
EDIT- Turns out I can't send PM's to chinabull here, forgot about that. I'll find some other means of communication.
EDIT2- I'm crazy- the message got through; chinabull messaged back! And... he said that he already returned his A7+. So we've got no leads there.
If anyone knows some devs who haven't even heard of the A7/A7+ but might be willing to pick up where Dexter left off, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

I would be willing to pony up CDN $20 towards the purchase of one for a talented (and dedicated) dev to work with. Here in Canada they are available as refurbs for about $90 from places like factorydirect dot c a ..
Anyone else want to donate some dinero ?
Cheers
Sorry for the late(ish) reply, I was out of town.
I don't have any money to donate, sadly, as I just spent it on the A7+...
But, like I said in the OP, if you are willing to work from afar we could do that.
It's a shame it's dead. Prices are around $90 in the US too. With all the china pads out there getting 2nd tier dual core processors with 600 res screens for very little more, it's easy to see why this would go by the wayside. One plus would be built in bluetooth which no china pad has at anything close to this pricepoint, and it probably has a better battery than many of them as well.
We've got someone over at Tablet Roms who will be working on the A7+! He is just waiting on the tablet to arrive.

I'd donate if you're talking about developing for the (older) A7. I still use mine and it would be nice to see a fresh rom for it.
I'd be in if I didn't just pick up the ZTE Optik from Sprint. Can't beat free and can't beat running JB via CM10. That 800 res is quite nice.
I'd greatly appreciate someone picking up work on the A7+. I still haven't flashed the newer firmware with the blank screen from sleep fix because I was holding out hope for a new custom rom. I'd have to root and install the outdated gapps again... And I'm sure we don't have unreasonably high expectations. I'd just like a rom without those awful elocity apps, doesn't black screen when I wake it, with google play, and with functioning hardware, anything more is welcome but uneccessary.
Ok his name is jam4 over at TR - check the thread for updates http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/elocity-a7-general-discussion/5362-any-other-devs-a7-a7.html
@dibmem jam4 is developing on the +, sorry
@frankwg83 yes he is working on honeycomb at the moment, but it sounds like your problems would be easily fixed... it takes 5 minutes and a flashdrive to install the Play Store and a root explorer and a 1-click-root app to get rid of the bloatware

Think he would develop on the A7 if he had the hardware? I'm the type of person who'd buy one second hand just to donate it to a willing and capable dev.

Maybe, I don't know. You'd have to ask him yourself - http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/members/jam4.html
"I am about 2 weeks out from releasing a working Honeycomb build for the A7+. Let me know how many of you are interested, either by pm or an email to [email protected]"
Everyone go PM or Email him!
So...2 weeks out? How'd that go?
Btw, the A7+ is at 1saleaday again for $70 this time. I'm willing to buy one and ship it to a developer if that's a hurdle since I'm pretty sure there are enough people out there that would want a solid Honeycomb or even Gingerbread firmware. I don't have the time/obsession to figure out the coding myself.
