We all know that 720p recording is working on this sd build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038694
But I asked in the questions, and the person that uploaded the video said that it was a 2.2 froyo build.
the question is, is that a sd build, or a nand build?
The max resolution is 480p on Youtube. The vid is fake ?
edit [30.JUN] New video uploaded, showing 720p settings in camcorder app
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xursSwDRUyo&feature=channel_video_title
Why do I only see a 480p max in the resolution selection?

Go back to the video, you cannot change to 720p hd quality, i.e. the video is NOT HD.

indeed, but the quality looks a bit better that normal android recording.. Have no idea.
WP7 is the single software on hd2 which records 720p so it seems to be wp7

I don't really understand you guys.. I've tried recently that Gingerbread ROM that claims to record 720p (just an older version), you could easily select 720p record mode, and the preview was ok, and even it would record, but the output was awfull, it was definitelly less than 720p, and 1-3FPS!!! Now i've been trying to watch an eye on that thread, people are claiming that it sort of records in 720p but with 1fps only, which, of course, sucks hard. (but it might be a progress somehow)
Secondly, the first video from this post is 16:9 and it looks good, though it's for sure not an HD video (and never was). The tricks is that you just need to install MIUI (or at least MIUI camera) and you're gonna get the best camcorder yet available for Android (imho), which also records 800x480 in very good quality (though sound quality is quite bad), and makes stills in 16:9 aspect.
Thirdly, it's definitely not a WP7 video, as i'm using WP7 in dual boot with Android for some time now, and WP7 is even my main OS on the phone, the video quality is great, it's sharp, (once in a while skips some frames, but definitely better than others), but has a bad hue, it's violet-greenish, as can be seen on youtube if you'll search HD2 720p recording...
And these are my fifty cents to the topic.. And as a wrap-up i can easily claim that i still don't believe in miracles, untill i'll get clear proofs or i'll just try it by myself..

Have you even read nickriley's post? That video proves nothing. 720p recording is useless at an FPS of 1-3, and so is a topic once more showing it is doing just that, which has been known for days already.

all pda have 720p,radiofm.......I think that the pda producers study these deficiencies and so they can sell the next pda adding something
It's only vga resolution, but perhaps might get a 720P upgrade like other phones. It seems capable of 720P.
as long as the hardware supports it then I don't mind waiting...

And camcorder is different thing; with recording VGA only.

no dell streak for me then.
I think it say vga and not 720p is because android 1.6 does not support 720p recording. Someone correct me if im wrong
It's quite possibly got the same chip as the N1 (the SOC does appear pretty close) and support for 720p came with the 2.x upgrade for that.
I reckon the hardware supports it, but we'll need a new software upgrade to do it.
take a look at the testing in this very forum to get 720p support on *ALL* snapdragon devices..
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...g-project-for-all-android-snapdragon-devices/
Well? Try it out! The new Desire HD builds can do it, but I don't know if the older "normal" Android builds can or not.
Just fire up a CUDA baseline 1280x720 with minimum settings -- if it plays smoothly with a stock player ("system mode"), congrats, your HD2 now does HD, too. (Hah, see what I did there? )
Report your findings! I don't have enough free space on my computer or card to try it myself. Plus, this greatly benefits y'all. Maybe.

It does in the latest HD builds, but the video comes out screwy. It DOES show that with the right software, the HD2 is perfectly capable of capturing and encoding 720p in realtime, but actually getting the software and drivers to interface properly is another story...
I never understand questions regarding playing 720p on HD2.
Recording, yep I understand.
As far as I know HD2 has only a 480x800 screen.... doesn't look HD for me.
So playing HD, Full HD... on an SD screen. Really I don't understand the advantage. For me it's same as plugging a Blu-ray on a 20 years old TV (ok... I go out ).
the advantage here is, that you don't have to transcode any downloaded movie (up to 720p) to the lower res - just to take it with you on your hd2 for the trip. also, you don't have to download separately movies for home and mobile entertainment. so, the feature basically save your time, storage and bandwidth. and if the USB-host on HD2 project goes right (it's in the beta phase), you could connect the USB2HDMI type adapter to play the vid on the big screen wherever you go with your HD2.
ok understand now
do any builds have 720p recording and if so which ones?

Sent from my HTC HD2
I haven't actually installed the ROM myself yet on my HD2 (kinda happy at the moment with MDJ's 2.3 Gingerbread NAND ROM for now), and I know that the DFT WP7 ROM now finally enables true 720p (1280x720) video recording.
Can someone do a test recording of that functionality and post the video sample someplace so I can see what kind of quality it offers? Just a 30 second clip would be great, perhaps something shot out of a window in daylight, whatever, doesn't matter. Just want to see how the quality and performance of the video appears.
Drop a link here from wherever, maybe post the clip to MegaUpload or something (not YouTube, please, as they might re-encode it to another format/settings). I'm looking for a native recorded clip on the HD2 using the DFT WP7 ROM at 720p settings, that's all.
Thanks...
I know you mentioned no youtube.. but i don't know other way.. and megaupload has an error when I tried it.. but just to give you an idea. here is youtube link for 720p with HD2..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5cv6bQ9FgA
Is it just me or is there a lot of noise interference in the background?
If you Zip or RAR the clip, MegaUpload or even MediaFire (faster) would accept it, but anything with the native .mp4 extension can be problematic as those sites try to treat the file as a streaming video.
I downloaded the YouTube one you posted, myowin, thanks. If anyone else has samples, go for it, I'm just trying to see what the HD2 is truly capable of so a variety of samples would be awesome to check out. This one posted above looks as expected - not "professional" level quality but then again we are talkin' about a smartphone with a tiny optical sensor in it.
It ain't perfect but at least finally we can do true 720p video recording on our HD2.
Always knew the hardware was capable...
As far as noise, the video itself looks as expected as I mentioned, and for audio noise, the mic is simply picking up whatever it can. It's pretty amazing when you do a recording in a room that you think is absolutely quiet and realize when you play the video back that there's a ton of background noise in it. Our subconscious minds filter out a lot of that background noise because it's always there, but when you listen to a recording, the brain knows it's not listening to the background noise anymore - instead, it's a recording of it and all that background crap just comes through loud and clear.

Yah, it is, and thanks for the proper upload. The YouTube version was re-encoded as I suspected and chopped - it's only 6.32MB and they cut the average bitrate down to only 2795 Kbps whereas the original video you just uploaded to MediaFire is 7911 Kbps for the average bitrate and it looks better because of it (while remaining the original 17.7MB in size also).
So I'm guessing the "average" bitrate done on the HD2 with WP7 is about 8 Mbps 720p and that's more than acceptable.

at first, I was gonna say there's no 720p when I noticed my vids are all 480p
and after reading more topics, I found out that I must use English (US) not UK to enable 720p =.=
I thought WP7 camera is no better than iphone camera at first, but the features are actually hidden in US English versions...
I don't get it why they hide it there....
Btw, 720p is now 100% working and quality is brilliant!!!
Any hackers gonna port it to Android??
But 480p got a faster framerate than 720p

Hi, i have a questin about 720p playback right on the phone.
i cant playback the recorded files in 720p on the phone.
it will only play files in lower resolution.
is this normal ?
I wondered why it only records with low settings xD It's a little bit tricky but ok ^^
No, that isn't beacuse of him. A couple of days ago I tried capturing a 720p video at work...After that I noticed that there was a much more louder than this guy's noise in the background and figured it out why...I was about 1meter from a PC and the noise was coming from it's fans. I don't know if this is good or bad but 720p for real ! )
°
aaam is it possible to play the recorded 720p files on the phone ?
i have a black screen and only here sound when i try to playback 720p recorded video.
I just made a video, though I don't have that noise in the background.

Ok heres the big question, and yes THIS THREAD WILL BE DELETED ONCE MY QUESTION IS ANSWERED.
The other threads are old and don't have clear answers, soo I would like to know if anyone is working on 720p recording for any HD2 android, has there been any progress? or will HD2 android ever get 720p recording?
Thanks to people who answer this question
Not yet.
Look here:

AFAIK Windows Phone 7 on HD2 does 720p video recording, that means hardware is capable and android should get the capability soon.
Yes its coming! i'm sure
just be patient!
ill give it 2 months at the max
YES YES YES
no realley.. yes.
the progress is that the wp7s rom has 720p recording SO the hardware is capable
but... there aren't any drivers for android
be patient developers are building drivers for it!
and thats not easy i think :S
Thanks for the quick replys guys, XDA is awsome for getting questions answered
Is this old because I'm using a nand Rom which support it that is gingerbread based........... or am I miss understanding? I recorded a video and checked its property and it was 720 and something will report back with more details and exact rom
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
@ vtruth
A lot of roms have the option to record in 720p, however, the result is a video of, i think, a mostly green screen. Either way, it is a video with no semblance of what was recorded.

Well, mobile HQ isn't 720p either. I don't see why you would want 720p in the first place, your phone doesn't have that many lines?

I'm quite aware of both of those things, but it has been mentioned that YouTube works in hd for the HD2 running Gingerbread. And I know from my own testing that a 720p encoded movie looks a lot nicer on the HD2 than a 800x480 encoded movie.
Uhm I haven't heard of any of that, and Google doesn't hint anything in that direction either, I think you're confusing some stuff. A lot of roms support 720p playback, but not in Youtube.
720p in se doesn't look beter than a 480p video by the way, on the contrary. You don't see the lines your screen can't show, and actually this may even result in a slightly worse video because of it.
A well encoded 480p video is at least as good as a 720p video, problem is that a lot 480p conversions suck. But that's not because it's 480p, it's because of the conversion.
That's why I don't think we'll ever have 720p mobile video. It's just wasted bandwidth over a nicely encoded 480p.
Oh, and I think Youtube HD just refers to the revamped app. Not 100% sure though so don't quote me on that.

Totally 100% agree. There would be more chance of performance issues with a downscaled 720 video on a 480 screen. It DOES NOT look better than a properly encoded 480 video. It is not physically possible for it to look better as your screen cannot show anything more than 480 pixels in each of the 800 columns. End of.
