Ok so, where do I start. My sister decided she wants a custom ROM on her galaxy s. So I rooted it, and after much trying, discovered that I could not get into download mode. So I flashed through ODIN, believing that I had now fixed the problem. I then went along, used ADB to get into download mode, installed clockworkmod, and tried to flash CM7. This is where things went pear shaped, the phone will now not do anything, If I switch it on, i just get the black and white galaxy s screen, and nothing else. I cant get into download mode with the 3 button combo, and if i connect it to the USB it does not connect to the PC in any way, is it completely bricked? Or is there some magical way to fix it???
Thanks hope I get some help
UPDATE: I made a USB Jig and it worked perfectly! The phone is all good now thanks everyone. This thread can be deleted if needs be!
I guess you need to buy or make a USB JIG!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
edit: You can also try removing the battery for 1 minute, hold power, vol. down and home key and then put the battery in.
Buy/Make a USB Jig
When uve got ur Jig - Remove Battery - Reinsert Battery - put Jig in - Don't Touch any Buttons - When Download Modes comes up remove Jig - Flash With a Stock Rom From samfirmware
the USB Jig Will Force the Phone into Download Mode
ok ya, i know about the USb jig, only thing is, any idea where I can get one in South Africa? lol, my soldering skills are not up to scratch?

Well.. ebay?
There are many "technical support shops" where you can drop your phone and they will re-flash it for free (as long as you have the bill). They have their own "usb jig".
What about recovery mode (hold power, vol. up and home key) ?
Also retry to get into dl mode several times...it might not have worked the first time...good luck for you..
got one from ebay
look for "Fix Download Mode USB Jig Samsung Galaxy S"
it worked like a charm
Try this.
Glad it worked for you.
A quick question about where you bought the jig bits?

hi, I just wanted to know how easy it was to find the parts for making the jig, I'm based in Johannesburg and am looking to make a jig for my Galaxy S2 to clear kernel counts and the Exclamation triangle.
Any help would be great thanks.

So, I think my phone is a bit bricked at the moment, I have this image of a phone, an exclamation mark, then a computer connected by a row of dots. I can't use links because I'm a new forum member, but you can see an actual picture of this image on the "[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader" thread by Darkstrider.
I can still get into "download mode" using the keypress and Odin still picks up the device on the COM port.
It had this firmware before I tried flashing it (16Gb model locked to the Three UK network):-
PDA: I9000NEJG2
PHONE: I9000NEJG1
CSC: I9000HCGJF2
The steps leading up to the bricking:-
I was firstly trying to follow the instructions on Darkstriker's 2nd post from his topic " [REF] BIG FAQ Thread! {Flash/Root HOWTO} {ADB&Tutorials} {T&T} [READ BEFORE POSTING!]"
So I got JG5 firmware from a link on the Modaco forums (from the " 22/Jul r3 (JG5) - MoDaCo Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy S with Online Kitchen" topic, the ROM was hosted on coblitz.codeen.org.
Installed the "usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip" drivers from the "USB Driver for Galaxy S and Misc Info" (xda forums) topic. Windows XP picked up and used the drivers in the extracted "03_Swallowtail" folder. It added "Samsung Mobile Modem" and "SAMSUNG USB Composite Device" to Device Manager.
So, I did everything on Darkstriker's guide, added the .pit file, chose the "re-partition" option because I was flashing to JG5. The process got stuck on "File analysis..", waited 20-30mins and it didn't move from this status.
Didn't work, so then I tried some different drivers, I googled and found "I9000_USB_driver.rar" on hotfile.
This time Odin got to the "Do not turn off target!!" status and it didn't move for around 20-30mins.
Restarted my computer, detached and reattached the USB cable, I decided to not use the re-partition option and try again, the status got to "factoryfs.rfs", this time the phone display went blank, which didn't happen before, but again it seemed stuck, nothing happened after waiting 20-30mins. So I aborted and closed Odin.
At this point I just wanted to use the phone to make a call when I notice the image/symbol above that I described at the beginning of this post. Help!
What's the best way to fix this? I spent nearly 2-3hrs trying to flash my phone and now it's half dead! I've nearly run out of mental stamina, but will give it a fresh attack today/tomorrow if someone can offer some suggestions.
Was thinking about trying the "fix" on the "[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader" topic but not sure if it is only for the Captivate.
Hope you guys can help me out
All I wanted to do was to put the "(ROM Galaxy Europe) Doc's StockRomMod V2 (XWJG5)(deoxed) 30/07/10" ROM on my device, and add the JIT compiler and Flash 10.1 player if possible
Go read the guides from the development area.
It's just too easy and you're making it overcomplicated to yourself.
If you have the connect to pc error logo.. remove battery and then proceed.
1. if you installed kies ever, you already have the needed drivers.
2. start odin and select correct files (pit, code, modem, csc in respective order)
3. put phone in download mode (home + volume down + power)(hold long enough)
4. plug it to computer (odin should say "added")
5. press start (in less than 5 mins you phone should restart and go into special mode where it does some magic and reboot again and your done).
My god Buddy, you are right, I was overcomplicating things, I did it in the exact order you said and now I'm getting the progress bar for the first time.
I'm feeling optomistic now! Thanks dude!
It worked! If I was gay I'd kiss you on the lips! Thanks again buddy, it was stupidly simple after all.

Hi, i have semi bricked my galaxy s which is from the african region, but purchased in dubai. i've managed to cut open a micro usb jack and i can clearly see the pins i need to use, my question is, does the resistor value have to be exactly 301k or it can vary up or down slightly. also instead of using 3 100k resistors can i add up other values as well to make it close to 301k? sorry im noob at this stuff atm but i find such hacking very intriguing. also when i tried it with the resistors that add up to 300k, i join them to pins 4 and 5 with the phone switched off, after 5 seconds it shows the same thing 'phone ! pc'. by which i know all hope is not lost yet.

I did 300k and it worked. 3 x 100k ohm resitors.
Solder just one pin and leave one pin loose.
Connect that micro usb when phone is shut down.
Touch with that loose end to that pin which you did not solder. 4 or 5.
Keep it pressed until phone goes to the download mode.
You can try my jm8 guide.
Section B is for flashing stock 2.1, to get a fresh clean install.
Hello - I urgently need help with my Samsung Galaxy Tab.
I flashed a wrong PIT/PDA & what happened is:
- my Galaxy Tab does not reboot at all
- the flashlight in the back suddenly switched ON automatically
No matter how long I press the Power Button, the device switches off just for one second, and then the flashlight switches ON again - but no reboot.
I cannot get into download mode / when I try to use commands with Odin, it only says: error: device not found.
Odin does show my device ([COM:4]), it appears as: Added // only the download mode does not work!
When I tried to start SuperOneClick, trying to Unroot, it is stuck with: "Waiting for device"
Weirdly, though, my netbook does install the drivers automatically when I plug it in. Which means, my netbook can "read" the device.
Does anyone here know how I could make the extreme Hard Reset, without having to reboot?
--------------------------
If you think this post should rather go to the Developers section, please feel free to move it // I am thankful for any help
Have you tried connecting to it with ADB to see if you can reach it at this level (apart from with SuperOneClick)? Try installing the Droid Explorer application on your Windows PC and see if it will recognise your Tab. If it will you should be able to initiate a reset from the Droid Explorer UI. If it won't I would suggest that you are hard bricked and it will have to visit Samsung. Good luck!
Hello,
thank you for your advice.
adb does not detect my device ..
and, unfortunately, neither does Droid Explorer
Just find it so strange that ODIN does ..
but like you said -
I am also afraid, that this is a "hard brick" & I will go see the retailer tomorrow.
Thank you, though, for offering help.

I guess the problem here is that even if Odin sees the USB device connected, if the Tab won't go into download mode then it's as good as bricked. With the SGS you can construct a USB jig with a 301k resistor between pins 4 and 5 of the micro USB to push the device into download mode if it won't respond any other way. I wonder if a similar thing would work for the Tab... Sounds like a challenge for someone who has two Tabs and doesn't mind experimenting a bit with one of them.

lol, I'll get my cheap Chinese Tab cables this week and hack one up to test.
My guess is that Odin will only see the Tab when it is in download mode. Id try flashing it in that state and find out for sure. It sure cant hurt.
You went to your retailer?I have exactly the same problem!!
First of all - THANK YOU for having started this discussion.
Yes, I went to the retailer. My Galaxy Tab is with Samsung Technical Support now; will keep you posted.
To answer some earlier questions, yes ODIN did recognize my Tab; but the screen on the Tab remained totally black. Only this strange "flash" light on the back kept glowing.
rotohammer, if you really get to test what you mentioned before, I'd be interested to hear what happened - but, personally I would not recommend it, unless you are sure you want to risk completely ruining your dear Tab.

I did ... and less than 2 weeks later ..
Update:
13-Jan-2011
Today noon I got a call from my retailer my Galaxy Tab was ready to be picked up & I was really lucky: my retailer said the repair would normally cost EUR 650.-
.. as I had damaged the whole mainboard ..
but as the Tab was less than 1 month old, they were so kind to do it w/in my warranty - so I did not have to pay for it.
I'm very relieved, as you can imagine.
Got my Galaxy Tab back with a brand-new mainboard, everything is working well &
I sure learned my lesson.
I will not flash the Galaxy Tab again.
Only because Galaxy Tab and Galaxy i9000 are both on Froyo, it does NOT mean that you can flash the same software!
I wanted to apply the 3 button combo fix on my Galaxy Tab but apparently it does not work!
Bricked mine as well, but mine is a weird case
I bring up the weirdest case of bricking so far, i was on an official Arabic (P1000JPJK2)Firmware, and i noticed a new Arabic release on SamsungFirmware.com (P1000JPJM3) i downloaded it and downloaded the .pit file, Started Odin v1.7 and unchecked repartition, selected the PDA and the pit and started the processes, odin finished and Reseted the device and give me the green light with the word PASS, however, the my p1000 decided to reboot into download mode automatically, so i rebooted the device manually and got stock in the Samsung Logo and keeps looping. so i decided to go back to my previous Rom but it will always fail and i would have to reboot my tab and it will show the good ol' Phon-PC logos, however, odin would see it and would flash anything i want. i tried flashing various versions of rom's but they would all fail... i tried repartition checked and unchecked and nothing worked, so lastly i decided to flash the .pit file alone and that worked and got me back to where i was stuck in the Samsung logo loop and no ROM would be flashed through Odin BUT the (P1000JPJM3) but it still will not boot! and funny enough i took it to sammy's repair shop and they told me to come pick it up in a few hours but they told me that they failed to repair it and they would need to keep it till tomorrow, but they guy was not that optimistic about getting it repaired and to make things worse i couldn't get unrooted so there is a good chance that there will be no warranty... does this mean that i bricked it for good? please help me.
Question about unbricking the fascinate and odin use. I am coming from a samsung vibrant, i could flash roms, brick and odin all day without issues. Part of what allowed me to do this was a usb jig with 301k ohm resistor in it. It forced the phone into download mode and then you could odin away.
Does the fascinate have this option? I'm going to pickup the phone tomorrow, this would just be icing on the cake if this was available.
thanks guys.
There are only 2 situations that I've seen that will cause a permanent brick for our phones. One is flashing anything through the "Phone" button in Odin. If you always use the PDA button, you'll never have to worry about that brick situation. The other would be flashing the modem of another phone as I don't think anyone has recovered from this either. Other than that, I think that if you have the battery out, hold down on the volume down button, and plug in the USB cable, it will always enter download mode to help you restore in some fashion.

sounds pretty good, thank you.
the reason i ask is the vibrant would boot onto a screen with a cell phone, warning sign and a computer if you messed up real bad. the only way out was to either have your phone warrantied or use the usb jig i mentioned in the first post. if its a non issue then awesome!
the jig is compatible with this phone. use it in the same way that you use it with the vibrant. just flash the di01 full package if anything goes wrong.

thanks man. if someone can, could they add this to a faq or wiki? as the jig is extremely useful and can be made for next to nothing and would probably help out some of the noobies.
Im a noob when it comes to this type of stuff, but what would be the difference between the 301k resistor, and just putting your phone in download mode with the power/vol button w/regular usb.

some vibrants came from the factory locked so the download mode wasn't accessible via the button method. so the jig would allow download mode access.
So after trying countless methods of getting this guy into download mode i failed i think i really bricked it but all it does is it starts up and right away it shows the phone-!-computer screen and nothing els i tried all the methods that i came across after researching for 5 hours straight. if anyone has a fix tell me if not email me at dencho1992 at gmail with a price or offer. id like over 150 but if i cant get it then oh well. this phone is flawless and has no scratches just got it from a raffel drawing and it even has a case. let me know if u know a fix.

Simply solution to fix, just use odin to flash back to stock on that screen.
Just make sure you place all the files on odin first and then plug in your phone.
Should be back to perfect working condition.

hey guys is will need some help with this device im not kind of a noobie on this kind of things bcs i been working with several phones, like the veteran xperia10, galaxy ace, motoroi2, etc etc. but never with a tablet
here is what it happens a friend ask me if i can upgrade his sgt-p1010 to a newer version, honeycomb or maybe ics, i´ve read a lot of posts regarding this on how to upgrade it trough odin everything was fine until the reboot of the device, bcs by my mistake i flash a rom of the 7.7" tab and this one is a 7" only now the tab is not turning on, odin is not recognizing it, either samsung kies or the pc. buttons are not responding it wont charge and cant enter to download mode.
I REALLY NEED HELP FROM U GUYS, HOPE U CAN HELP ME
ps. srry for my english
This kind of thing can result in the inability to boot which can only be repaired by the use of specific hardware, i.e. this could be a "hard brick". Then again, maybe it can be restored to working order by flashing it again (a "soft brick"). So the very first thing you need to know is, can it get to download mode?
Turn it off, if it's switched on, and charge it for a couple of hours, say four hours. Use the original charger connected to mains. It doesn't matter if it shows anything, or nothing on the screen, let it charge. This is to make sure flashing it won't fail because it doesn't hold a charge.
Now connect it to the PC with the original USB cable. Then after making sure it's switched off, switch it on by pressing the On/Off button, while simultaneously the Volume UP switch. Press them both at the same time, and keep them pressed! If you're lucky you'll get the yellow graphic with the download text. A phone symbol, an !, and a PC symbol is fine too. Even if it doesn't show anything, you may be in download mode, so install the right drivers, and hopefully Odin or Heimdall will recognise is, and will allow you to flash the right ROM.
well i already let it charge for all night long and nothing happens after i perfomed the flashing the screen was totally in black but it doesnt shoes anything i mean the tab was turned on, then apparently batterie dies and after that is not charging. already tried with the heimdall thing but it says that device is not connected.
I think that this is going to be a HARD BRICK
so do u thhink there is another way to solve it?????
or it will be necessary the JTAG stuff???? bcs i dont want to try that it seems that is very difficult to me bcs i dont know nothing about hardware jejejeje
You have installed the Heimdall driver? It's called zadig.exe. Then you have to go to download mode and connect the Tab to the PC with the USB cable. Then Heimdall hopefully will detect the Tab.
If there's no way software will revive the Tab, it's hard bricked and will need hardware to get it working again. There's this guy mobiletechvideos.com who will repair any kind of brick. Basically he uses the JTAG on the board of the Tab and a special box to flash the right ROM to the Tab, even when it's dead. Some here have tried the service, and they say he's quite reliable. Another way is to modify your Tab with Adam Outler's Unbrickable Mod. It's brilliant, you can't soft brick your Tab after that, but it involves soldering very small components on the board of the Tab. The mobiletechvideos guy can do it for you I believe.
Well, I guess you just got a hardbrick .
The only way to fix this problem is go to SAMSUNG SERVICE CENTER.
