So my friend has an EVO that was Rooted with Unrevoked. He sold it to his brother who did the OTA update like last week. Now the phone will power on and get stuck on the white screen that says "htc EVO 4G"
I have been working since 7:30 this morning trying to get it to work again. I have read pages of info on this problem but nothing seems to work for me. I Downloaded two different PC36IMG.zip files onto his SD card while it was in my EVO, then I had to move the PC36IMG.zip from the "downloads" file on the SD card to the main list of files using Astro.
I then put the SD card back into his phone and held the vol. down & power button to get in the hboot screen. The phone scans the SD card finds the file, does its little loading thing with the blue progress bar on the right...then it says "checking..." then it says
"Main version is Older
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<vol up> Yes
<vol down> No"
I am at a loss
You did how much reading?

Check your bootloader. Is it s-on or s-off?
If it is s-off:
Get a pc36img of amon ra's recovery. Flash it like you have been trying to flash those other img's. When it is done and it asks about rebooting, say no. On the next screen, select recovery. Once in recovery, hook your phone up to your comp and enable usb. Put a Rom, such as CM7 or Mik's in the root of your card by drag and dropping from your computer. Close usb. Make a nandroid backup. Wipe everything, except sdcard. Don't format card right now! Flash the Rom you dropped on your SD. Reboot.
If it is s-on:
Find the official ruu. Run it. Learn patience, because it may be months before they find a root exploit.
This may help
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/
Run the RUU and it may recover your Evo.
***THIS WILL REMOVE ROOT***
His phone says S-on.
I am trying the RUU now but at the HBOOT menu it never says HBOOT USB when its plugged in.

Dont use HBOOT USB use fastboot, Watch the video on the site i posted @ 2:28min it shows what to select in the bootloader
Im sorry, lol, thats what I meant. I push the power button when highlighting fastboot and it goes to the screen that says fast boot on top in red then says bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader, power down....but it never changes to Fastboot USB.
Is your USB cable plugged in ?
or you have the wrong driver on your PC, there are 3 or so different drivers that can load mabe you need to change it to the one posted at the bottom of that page. or your phone is borked, if it is S-On take it to a sprint store and thay may be able to flash it for you.
Yes the USB is plugged in, i even tried 3 other USB ports. I downloaded that driver and after it was done I extracted the ZIP...but what now? In his video he didnt have to do anything.
I know it sounds a little too simple, but have you tried to clear storage from the bootloader?
I don't believe there is an official RUU of 4.22+ available yet, which leaves you kind of screwed. Since the bootloader is s-on, you cannot run any unofficial PC36IMGs through the bootloader. Since the update stuck you with the new bootloader, every RUU is going to give you that error.
Good news is that since you're s-on, you can take it to a Sprint store, tell them what happened (minus the root details, duh) and see what they can do.
Good luck!
i will give it back to him and tell him to try that. Thanks
Make sure you copy the files off the SD card and wipe the SD card before you take it to sprint!

Reading the "How to root" thread here. I've rooted a few G1's and a MT3G in the past.
Anyways. I downgraded to RC29, downloaded Amon's recovery and Hard SPL.
Did the whole Telnetd, downloaded telnet from market and mount remount, flash yadda yadda as per stated.
Rebooted and applied the Hard SPL.
After that finished I rebooted and it just hangs on the G1 screen, Home/Power does nothing. Camera/Power does nothing. Trackball/Power just lights the LED up blue.
Will it live the rest of it's life as a door stop?
not being able to boot into anything is a brick but there have been many threads about people who have somehow reversed their brick so just search this forum and see if anything happends who knows it could happen. otherwise its a really shiny paper weight
Bummer. I'll search around a bit more and see if there might be a thread I missed. I don't want to dig into it and do the whole jtag crap since there is still a warranty on the phone.
This is the "How-to" thread I followed and has worked on every G1 I have rooted til this phone which is a brand new one from Tmo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Searching more I have read about people not flashing a radio before the SPL and caused a brick. If that is true why doesn't it state this as a necessary step?
Flashing the Radio before the SPL is needed for DangerSPL (although I seem to recall a thread debating that - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655097 ), I didnt think it was needed for HardSPL, it sounds like a brick unfortunatly, but I am no expert.
It is thought that its safer to flash the SPL and radio ect via fastboot (see link above) , not that it helps to much now, but that is an old guide, it should be updated though
Yep. From what I have gathered is if you can't get into recovery (home+power) or fastboot (camera+power) and it hangs on the G1 boot screen. It's a brick.

its not a brick unless it doesn't turn on at all (depending on how you define the word "brick")
exact same thing happened to one of the G1 replacements my friend got sent to him...we sent it back and they sent him a new one
Nah it's not bricked, the HSpl isn't compatible with your ROM, try flashing he ROM again, or faulty ROM this happens a lot.
Howto fix:
1. Backup any files on your SD card that are valuable to you (you can copy them to your PC's hard drive)
2. Format your SD card to FAT32 ( put your SD in your PC)
Windows: Right-click on SD icon and select format
3. Download the RC29 / RC7 dreaimg.nbh file (don't rename it or your phone won't recognize it):
RC29 (US): http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
RC7(Europe):http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
4. Put the file you just downloaded onto your freshly formatted SD card (make sure it is named DREAIMG.nbh, the rc7 file downloads with .NBH which is wrong)
5. Turn your phone off.
6. Hold down the Camera button, and press the Power button until the bootloader starts.
Note: On some G1s it may require pressing the action button (trackball), while on others it may require pressing the power button.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to flash the image.
8. When it's done, press the trackball.
9. Press the Call, Menu, and Power buttons at the same time to reboot. You may need to unplug your phone for this to work.
10. And you're done, your phone is in Manufacture default-settings.
If you want to flash a ROM follow a guide (start from the beginning)
Tell me if it worked or didn't worked!

but on the one i described, just to let you know, i flashed the rc29 dreaimg.nbh like 15 times, it would never get off the G1 boot screen

Try flashing the ROM again if you can go to the bootloader(Rainbow) screen try this:
1. take out the SD card
2. download this file ,open the folder and paste the dreaming.NBH file to the root of your SD card(use your pc or another phone to past this on your SD card).
2. you should get a gray screen once the card in placed back into the phone
3. then press power to start update
4. once the update is complete press the track ball then the rainbow(bootloader) screen should come back up,
5. pull out the battery and there you go your phone should work again
Note: If it didn't updated turn of your phone and turn it on by pressing (& holding) Power+Camera button.
Tell me if it worked

Doesn't work either. Connected, disconnected, SD card in or out, SIM card in or out and any combination of that.
Logcat just sits and says "Waiting for device" while the phone just hangs on the G1 screen. So unless there is a different way to get into the bootloader besides using Camera+Power I'd like to know.
Camera+Power and Home+Power are unresponsive.
Well... it sounds like you've got yourself a fancy plastic brick, just remember for next time

I did all the steps to root the phone, 1 and 2, but got stuck in a bootloop. The sprint log stuff would come up, the the 4g, then back to sprint etc. I flashed the PC36IMG.zip of the shipped version, but now I can't get the RUU to take the phone into a fully factory state. It starts, then gets stuck waiting for bootloader with a black screen and htc on it. I really just want to make it factory again and start over with the root process. Any ideas?
Hold power and volume when turning on phone, then select fastboot and have the selection for bootloader highlighted, then start the RUU it should work then.
OK, so I tried the volume down + power btn deal, but still no dice. I really don't undestand wtf happened, cause before doing the 2nd part of root, I was able to load Damage ROM, now anything I load besides the PC36IMG.zip from part 1 just bootloops. Crazy

ive seen this answered in the RUU threads. they mentioned the RUU doesn't automatically reboot the phone into the correct mode, i think it was bootloader? manually booting it into the correct mode, then connecting the USB, resolved the issue.
you might want to search/reference the RUU threads for more details as i never had the issue and am only recalling off the top of my head what ive read, which cant be 100% accurate!
When RUU stops/freezes and your phone has the black screen with "HTC" on it.... do not restart your phone or anything leave it the way it is. What you do is exit out of the RUU program by clicking "exit" when it freezes up. Then without doing anything to the phone, just restart the RUU program and it should pick up where it left off and complete the process. I found this fix in "Q and A" part of the Evo forum and it worked for me.

You must have the adb and fastboot binaries for this to work. There are several threads on xda to get those to work. Once you have that working, go to the clockwork recovery thread and download clockworkmod recovery 2.5.x.x. Then copy that to your /AndroidSDK/tools folder. Boot your phone into HBOOT mode. Select Fastboot. Plug your phone into your computer. Let it load the drivers. Open up a command window (DOS) by pressing the window button + R and typing cmd and press run. Change the directory to your /AndroidSDK/tools folder (cd /AndroidSDK/tools). Then type:
fastboot devices
It should return your phone's serial number. Then type:
fastboot flash recovery
DO NOT HIT ENTER YET! Put a space after recovery, then drag and drop the recovery file from your tools folder onto the command screen window. Now press enter.
It should say sending recovery....Okay. Then writing recovery.....Okay.
After that select bootloader from the fastboot screen. Then once it changes to HBOOT mode, just select recovery and it'll boot you into clockworkmod recovery where you can flash any rom you need to.
ok Im gonna try this step by step...hopefully I my phone aint bricked.. tnks so much!
Don't worry, your phone is far from bricked! As long as HBOOT mode is available to you you're fine! I'll try to find the link to the original ROM so that way you can just flash that through HBOOT if this process doesn't work. This process will allow you to keep your engineering bootloader (0.85.2007). Flashing the original ROM will make you have to go back through the rooting process. I really hope you get this to work! Good Luck! And by all means you can PM me with any questions you have. That way I can get back you faster. If you include your email, I can respond right away.
EDIT: Here is the link to the Stock 2.2.1 update. This will undo root. So use that as a last resort. But it will definitely work!
You want to download the PD15img.zip

When you do the PD15IMG method you store the PD15IMG on the root of the SD card and turn the phone on holding the power and volume down button. It should never get to the boot image.

Just to let you know, you'll only be able to flash Gingerbread ROMs with ClockworkMod 3.0.x.x. You have to use CWM 2.5.x.x to use Froyo ROMs. Just wanted to make sure you knew that, so you don't get into another "brick" kind of situation.

I do believe you are correct...it so happened that i have tried loading Clockworkmod
2.x.x.x and 3.0.0.5 and the only thing that passed through the logo and showed the menu is 3.0.0.0...
I also made a mistake in placing the PD15img.zip file on my SDCARD as "PD15img.zip.zip" because the extensions are already associated and it its these small things that one has to be really careful about the certainty of the process step by step.
Anyways as soon as I corrected the file name...my HBOOT loader automatically did the job..but I am back to square one...but this time IM gonna use the older clockwork MOD to install Froyo roms...which my main problem in the first place was losing my WPA_supplicant file..in which I lost the WIFI connection capabilities of the phone..in which it made it difficult for me to access key files to reflash and boot the phone again as a default factory phone...
Hi
I had a problem with my htc magic after trying to flash the RA-sapphire-v1.0.0 recovery image into the phone. Before the problem occurred I rooted my phone and flashed RA-sapphire-v1.6.5, but because I had an issue with it I tried to flash an old version " RA-sapphire-v1.0.0".
Now my phone keeps rebooting endlessly and I can not access recovery mode, fastboot or anything else?
Is it bricked? Can I fix this issue?
The phone is 32A
Radio is 6.35 (I can not access fastboot so this is from my memory)
If you have no access to fastboot nor recovery, then you are pretty bricked!!!
Are you sure you can't get into fastboot? Pull the batter, press and hold down the back button, and put the battery back in. See if it goes into fastboot then. Do the same thing again, but holding the home button instead to see if you can get into recovery. I dunno why you used an old one and not the new one.

I tried both method and it did not work. The phone is still rebooting endlessly. I used the old recovery since the new one kept restarting the phone to the actual system after I go into recovery mode after 2-3 seconds.
1.6.5 isn't the new one. The newest version is 1.7.0. Well if that didn't work, then year your bricked.
so is there anything i can do to fix it?

Not sure what info you want from Fastboot screen so this is everything i can see

Is this the right kind of information?
Two options. Downgrade to 1.5, then update to 1.6, then root, flash a custom ROM, reinstall the 1.33.0013 SPL and 2.22.28.25 radio, and then flash a new custom ROM. Optionally, you can downgrade to 1.5 and upgrade back up to 2.2.1. Either way just let me know and I can assist.
Thanks for you help with regards to the approach, is one easier than the other? If they are both roughly the same then would go for the Downgrade to 1.5 and upgrade back up to 2.2.1. route as it may be easier to sell in a few weeks when the Galaxy S2 out.
So, here we go, please read through all the steps before starting and then reading each step as you go along:
1. Go here and download "sappimg.nbh" and "update1-5.zip".
2. Put all of them on your SD card. I would suggest downloading to a folder on your computer, then copying them over. Have had issues in the pass with people downloading files directly to their SD card and it corrupting the file.
3. With the phone turn off and the SD card in it, boot holding (volume down+power) to get into hboot. The phone should detect the sappimg.nbh, check the file (you'll see a progress bar in the upper right-hand corner), and then ask you to hit "ACTION" to continue. (ACTION being pressing the trackball)
4. The phone will start flashing the different parts of the phones partitions. You'll see the progress bar in the upper right-hand corner a few more times, then after about 5 minutes, it'll ask you to hit "ACTION" again to reboot.
5. Let the phone boot all the way up (this may take a few minutes) and then turn it off without signing in.
NOTE: Unless you need the phone to access the SD card from the computer, in that case sign in and do the next step.
6. Access the SD card, find "update1.zip" and rename it to "update.zip".
7. With the phone off turn it back on by holding (home+power) to get into recovery. You'll see a triangle with an ! in it, press (home+power) again to bring up the menu.
8. Using the trackball, scroll to the "wipe data/factory reset" option and press the trackball to select it. After it completes, scroll to "apply update.zip from SD card" and select it. It should pickup the update file on the SD card and flash it, then reboot.
9. When you get to the login screen again, turn the phone off.
Note: Again, as before, you can optionally login to get into the ROM for access to the SD card from your computer.
10. Repeat steps 6-9 for the "update2-update5.zip" files. You will need to remove the old "update.zip" before renaming the next update file. When you get to the login screen the last time (after flashing "update5.zip") you can sign in and use the phone.
Thanks for the guide but I've hit a problem. The phone recognise the sappimg.nbh and starts to flash itself but when then a message:
model ID incorrect!
Update Fail!
appears and the flash has failed. I've tried this a few times now downloading the file again, formating the SD card etc but to no avail. Do you have any suggestion on how to get round this issue?

Need the specific country.
United Kingdom or England to be exact.
I just partitioned my SD card and flashed a new rom (RunnyBliss HybriD) tonight. Everything was working fine, I just reinstalled all of my apps and everything was perfect. I went to unplug my phone from the computer (which was on charge only) and just unplugged it. After that, all of the apps I downloaded were gone and the home screen pages that I just setup were gone. I decided to reboot and see what happens and to my surprise it wouldnt boot back up. It is stuck at the white "htc evo 4g" screen. I tried to boot into recovery and it vibrates 3 times and then does nothing. I assume that the phone was actually in USB mode and I corrupted the usb by removing it without ejecting it. Long story short, I have an Evo that doesn't work and I dont know what to do. My computer wont recognize it so I cant access the SD card. Please help.

I'm kind of new to this but, in HBOOT there should be a recovery option, select that and recover the latest backup.
