How I solved a big part of my Atrix Battery Problem - Atrix 4G General

So I got my Atrix just over a month ago. For the first week to two weeks, battery life was GREAT! But then suddenly I'd used 70% of my battery in 3 hours, and wasn't getting through the day.
Sure I'd downloaded a few apps, but the focus of MY device is personal email and phone calls, and that usage hadn't changed. So SOMETHING was amiss!
I looked at the apps I'd downloaded, running apps in the background, and I REALLY didn't see the issue. So for a week my battery was nearly dead. One night I LET it die. Ran it into the ground and charged it ALL the way back up. It seemed better for a day or two, but then the problem seemed to come up again...
Frustrated, but not wanting to have to Factory Reset my device, re-root, re-enable tethering on my data plan, etc... I looked for other options. And about this time, my Social Networking app wasn't updating. Figuring I didn't really need it anyway, I first disabled it, then used a 3rd party app to uninstall it. The icon is still in the phone, and I can still open it... but it NEVER updates.
Well, since doing that... my battery life has been MUCH better! I think the Social Networking was keeping the radio running WAY more than it needed to be. And now that it's disabled or whatever, I'm not having 1/2 that battery drain. Getting through the day isn't such an ordeal, and I LOVE my phone again!!!
Dunno if this will work the same for others, but thought it might help a few folks. Best wishes!!!

What 3rd party app did you use to get rid of it?

I had the same problem and did the same thing and it solved my problem also.

Just tried that, and unfortunately I'm still having the terrible battery problems. Battery barely lasts through half the day

you know, your phones come with a battery manager in settings, so you can see what app / service is draining it.
Instant messengers for example, no matter which one, drain the battery a lot.
I usually turn the phone on at 7:30am and turn it off at 12:00am and am left with 40% battery, although i am a very light user. One gmail account, one twitter account with 15 minutes sync, whatsapp, light browsing and sometimes a phone call here and there.

If you are using Facebook, the new update seems to be killing my battery. I force stop the app after every use.

The only thing that helped my batterydrain

I installed Spare Parts and saw that my phone was never sleeping, even though it was on standby all the time.
This was caused by the location by antenna feature.
Ever since i unchecked that feature i've had around 50-60 hours of uptime, with a few calls and a lot of texts.
hope this helps alot others
With the new firmware the problem of battery dissapears completely
There is a known issue with network location detection in android 1.6. I had the same issue with my galaxy and it was solved. Now that we have root, we can hopefully do the same.
Also, br aware that I have found spare parts to actually stop the phone from sleeping, as well as tapatalk. I suggest rebooting after using either program.

Actually that issue is fixed in the latest update so it's already fixed without needing root.
Which firmware? I know I'm still experiencing it.
RBA020 solved the battery issues for me.
Where in spare parts does it show you if your phone has been sleeping?
you don't need spare parts. Just dial *#*#4636#*#* and click battery history and then the running bar.

I hope this means that under Location, you had Wireless Networks and Assisted GPS enabled.
One question tho... how did you isolate this feature as the one that was keeping the system awake?
I just found that my phone has been running most of the time, I see Running at 100% under Battery History. Then I select Partial Wake usage and see Android System has the largest share. But what part of Android System? how does one get to know?
I know from having a Samsung galaxy and being part of the androidforums community that was going nuts until Simone found a bug report with Google saying that network location was stopping devices from sleeping. We had root so a Dev applied a patch to services.odex and voila! Phones were napping again.

Hmm... time to give this a try... so is it just Wireless Network or also AGPS that causes this problem?

Didn't know that there was an XDA App till I saw your sig. Looks like its worth a try since its free!!
Update after turning location off completely
Well first run with all location methods disabled (I can still enable GPS quickly via a widget when I need to use it)... the battery performance is up phenomenally!!
I charged fully before going to bed last night, then kept the phone unplugged... woke up and found the battery was at 97%. This has never happened to me.
Ok, one thing tho, I use Juice Defender with night time schedule, so my wifi and 3G were off during most of the night. Anyways, its been around 3 hours since I woke up, and I've been using the phone on and off to do some browsing.
The battery is now at 93%.
I do not use any other aid other than Juice Defender... no task killers, no startup editors. Will update on how the rest of the day progresses.
EDIT: my thanks to Inebriatef and adrianoftyriel for pointing this out.

I too would like to hear a bit more. Could the OP please elaborate?
I'm running the latest FW and although my battery life increased exponentially, I find that it's not going to sleep anymore! I had close to 50 hours battery life and now I repeat everything to get just under 20 hours.
I don't use task killers and crap anymore, just before I put my phone away. If I don't, I have a trillion programs running with like 40mb of RAM free. Although I understand this is Linux based, these programs are RUNNING and not idle. All my **** is draining the battery again after a clean reinstall of everything. What a bummer.

@bongd, by latest FW, do you mean the R2BA020? If yes, then you shouldn't be affected by the problem being reported here. I'm still on R1FB001, which apparently has this Android 1.6 bug related to location.
As in my case, simply by disabling location settings (even though this reports that network location is the culprit, I disabled them all), the phone is now able to suspend itself and basically consume very little battery in standby.
Personally, I dont see any issue with lot of applications running and having little RAM left because I trust the Android system to manage it efficiently. Furthermore, the RAM on these phones is not as fast as what you would see typically on desktop systems, so it actually helps having things around in memory rather than aggressively cleaning it out. Checkout this link to understand a bit more about Android task management features: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/04/multitasking-android-way.html
I suggest you use Spare Parts to isolate your battery drain, there might be some app that is misbehaving and hogging systems resources. Also turning off very frequent updates/refresh intervals in some applications is the way forward.
I found through trial and error that fancy widgets keeps my phone from sleeping.sad cause I really want to use it.

Thanks, j4mm3r. I am using R2BA020. It looks like I have some diagnostic troubleshooting to do when I get home.
Sitting here at work charging my phone, it isn't loading craploads of programs anymore. And it seems to be sleeping okay. I'll play around when I have some free time.
Fixed my problem big time
Hey guys,
I just wanted to throw my two cents into the pot.
OK – so after experimenting with Task Killers, Task Managers, Spare Parts, Juice Defender, etc. I came to the conclusion that they (for the most part) did more bad than good. It was getting to the point that I was just starting to accept that “The X10 just has ****ty battery life” end of story.
I also read in a Google released post on the web, that there are a number of reasons that Task Killers, etc. are actually not required to end tasks. Android actually has a fairly intelligent and systematic approach to killing tasks that are not being used. I haven’t used any sort of proprietary battery saver, task ender, startup cleaner, etc. and I’ve been having the best phone performance since I got the headset.
The time now (Eastern Standard) is 3:30pm on Monday. The last time I charged my phone was Saturday evening at 6pm, and currently I am showing 24% battery remaining. Let those numbers do the talking!
My settings are:
Wi-Fi always off unless I am going to be actively using it (browsing)
Using Phone info, I change WCDMA Preferred to GSM Only (enables 2g instead of 3g without disabling data altogether)
GPS always off
Screen settings, brightness, etc. I believe have a much smaller effect than people tend to believe. The SINGLE BIGGEST factors for me, and noticing this huge increase in battery life are:
Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update -> UNCHECK Automatic Search (this constantly searches the market, etc. for app updates and what not)
Cycle power immediately after charging. Once my phone completes its charge, I turn off and then on again.
I hope that some people can enjoy moderately extended battery life as I have. I am SO ecstatic to be at HOUR 43 and still at 20%+
Worth mentioning also that I am on Rogers (Canada) and have not received any updates, so this extended battery life is not a result of a firmware update.
How I Fixed My Batter Life Problem
My Incredible would run dead in about 4 hrs doing nothing. I finally dug into several "task killer" programs and found that about 20 - 30 apps were invisibily running in the background constantly. As soon as I permanently killed them, my battery life went to normal. I can now get about 2 days of normal use on 1 charge. Even a day of pretty heavy use will last almost all day.
So for me, it was all the new apps I installed when I first got the phone that were running in the background. The free "task killer" program was not showing them. I finally found the app called "System Panel." It was the ONLY app that would show me all the "invisible" apps that were still running invisibly in the background and let me kill them. Once I killed them with System Panel, they stayed dead and the free "task killer" program could auto-kill them from them on.
Not sure why the free programs could not see the rogue apps, but my battery life is GREAT now.

I'm running R2BA023 and I am struggling to get a full day from the phone at the moment. It normally lasts around 12 hours and then its flat.
However, I ran the Telenor R2BA020 update and I manage to get a full day with ease.
I have just done a clean install of R2BA023 Generic UK "root" edtion and going to see how I get on. What I did notice before is that the phone was not returning to a idle state.

Battery dying very quickly - what to do?

My Evo battery is draining at a rate that is all together too fast. I took it off the charger about 3.5 hours ago and it has drained about 30-40%. I have not made a call nor used the net at all save for the receipt of 3-4 emails. I had a rooted phone but I reset the phone back to complete unrooted stock. I have not even so much as installed an app. What can I do about this?
turn off your mobile data when not in use. This will save tremendous amounts of battery.
if you search the forums you should find countless threads on battery and how to find out what is draining your battery and to extend life.
not sure why you would unroot unless you were exchanging it at sprint store but it greatly limits what you can do to help prevent battery drain. If you dont want to mess with much jsut use a rooted stock rom and it is pretty much the same thing as being unrooted but you keep the extra rooted benefits.
your best bet on non rooted device make sure mobile data, 4g, auto orientation, bluetooth etc are turned off. do the HTC battery condition/charge trick. and turn off background sync.
my suggestion is to re root and look into undervolted kernels and many other battery saving tricks found using search!
hopefully it helps some.
I had the same problem OP.
Turns out my radios weren't update.
Head over to the developer section and download the newest radios and stuff.
I've seen significant improvement of my battery life by using Collin_ph Battery Tweak 1 that was offered by Myn's when I flashed his/her's rom. I had my BF take his Evo to work after he come home complaining that the charge would only last about an hour or two and behold, he got through the whole day without having to charge his battery. This is after listening to music at work for 8 hours also. I HIGHLY recommend this tweak for ROOTED PHONES as I and everyone else I've recommended loves their Evo now and have no complaints...I'm at work right now and I'm at 79% and when I usually get home the battery is either still green (full) or orange (med) charge. I'm not sure if this tweak can be used with other mods but I'm very happy with this tweak as it has made my phone perfect now~~
Could be a Rogue app running killing your battery or radios not updated like stated above.
I recently started having the same issue. Advice such as turning of data and the GPS aren't helpful since the device functioned fine with GPS and data on before. Also if the battery was draining at a slower rate on the current radio before, you shouldn't need to update it, should you?
Seems that either something is making the Evo use more juice than it was before or that the battery is not holding the same capacity it used to. For some reason Phone Idle and Cell Standby have been using quite a bit more juice than they used to.
I don't like some of the software mentioned to try and locate anything that could be using more juice since those programs seem to use quite a bit themselves. Either way, what could be doing it that would come up as Phone Idle or Cell Standby in the included battery monitor? Wouldn't anything else come up under Android System?
The battery draining that quickly is not normal even with background sync, GPS (idle), 4g, data, or anything else on. There is another issue which must be solved. To troubleshoot so far I've tried another battery (same thing happens) and now I'm trying with everything turned off. If I can isolate what was causing my sudden rapid battery drain, I'll update everyone. This just started a couple nights ago for me. I think I'm on the latest radio, but I'll check.
Last post sums up my problem perfectly. I have an extended battery that lasts half the time it has over the last 4 months. Started with the radio updates. running myk
Use the battery usage functions of 'spareparts' to determine what's consuming cpu or preventing the phone from sleeping.
Can't fix the problem until you've isolated what's at fault.
Turning off mobile data will indeed fix a problem of some app trying to access the network, but it won't solve the actual cause.

I think juice defender does this automatically when the screen is off.
In the case of my phone, and I believe the OP's, we don't have any rogue apps or things running in the background. I know this phone like the back of my hand. I have completely uninstalled unnecessary apps like facebook, twitter, all things like news and weather are on manual update, i don't keep 4g or gps on, and I use wifi at home. I turn off 3g in terrible reception areas. I'm not a new user who doesn't understand the basic ways to save a little battery. I'm pretty sure the OP isn't either by his post. I use my phone the same every day. My chinese extended battery would last me easily from morning to bedtime with 20 to 30 percent to spare. Now I can't get near that after the radio updates. Since it's been well known that something is weird with these current updates, I've downgraded to 1.77 to see if that helps. My phone was sleeping fine though, so I don't know how much it will help. Always some BS with this phone.

if you are having trouble after a radio update, just try some of these other radios and see if that helps
Your best bet would be to root your phone again and give one of the SBC kernels a shot. I'm running CM 6.1.2 along with Zendroid 1.1.0 BFS AVS SBC and I can easily get 16+ hours with HEAVY use. And when I say heavy use, I mean hundreds of sms, dozens of calls and lots of websurfing. You will love the SBC kernels. Give it a try.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
We can offer suggestions until we're blue in the face.
First off, the OP needs to provide specifics of what's installed on the device, including rom, kernel, radio, etc, not to mention the hardware version itself.
Assuming it's not the known pri /rom conflict, then determination needs to be made as to what's actually consuming cpu - see first sentence above.
Need to use a systematic approach to troubleshoot this, otherwise it's a waste of time.

That sounds like a very weak cellular signal is forcing the radio to keep searching for it, draining the battery very quickly.
One way to somewhat alleviate this problem is to force roaming, to connect to a provider with a better signal.
"Roam Control" app does this (Market).

My battery advice to those who need battery help

I keep reading on here about how either someones battery life is either awesome or great or this or that. It seems that many folks on here with great battery life are old pros at milking their phones for the best battery life possible, while others may not know the best methods for getting the optimal battery life they want.
So here are some tips for getting the battery life you want:
1) Calibrate your battery by letting if completely discharge and then charge it using the wall charger it came with. Do this at least three times so the phone has a chance to get real statistics.
Update: It is recommended that you do not do this very often as some say it could damage the battery in the long term. You should do this early on in the life of the phone as the damage if any would be minimal. This needs to be done regardless. It is the only way for the phone to get an accurate full/zero reading.
Update 2: I have found that after doing a factory reset, you need to do this step again. After a factory reset on 4.1.83 (most recent update), my battery life dropped considerably. After letting it discharge fully and then charging it with the phone off again, I was back to normal battery use.
2) Set wifi to sleep when the phone is not in use. Unless you are streaming data such as pandora or other data intensive programs with the screen off, you do not need it on (I will talk about background data in a moment for those who are going to mention that the phone still does data while it is sleeping). You can change the setting by going to Settings > Wireless networks > wifi settings > menu button > advanced > wifi sleep policy
ofek said:
You should write that after settings it you need to click on menu button->save.
If you will not do this step, every reboot it will restored to "Never" option.

3) Disable motoblur's account settings sync over cell data. This setting causes all of your account information to sync over your data connection when wifi is not available. This should be disabled as it will constantly sync and drain your battery even when the screen is off. Really do you need you facebook contacts that are synced to your contacts to be updated every five minutes? Settings > Data manager > Data Delivery > social apps > sync over wifi.
Update: Only disable the Social Apps that sync over background, do not disable the Background data. Disabling background data will cause certain things to not work properly, like for instance the gmail app.
Update 2: If you are using the Twitter/facebook/whatever apps (real apps) you should go ahead and remove the associated accounts from Motoblur. You do not need them to sync twice as motoblur will sync them with it's account and then the apps will sync. The downside to this though is that any contact pictures you have synced from those accounts will no longer show up in contacts forcing you to manually add pictures to your contacts.
4) remove widgets. Widgets drain batteries when they are active. Most of them are useless and really serve no purpose other than to try and make you feel important about yourself. I mean really, how useful is a facebook widget that only shows one or two peoples updates? Trash the ones you can live without. If you are using a launcher other than motoblur, go and load motoblur and make certain there are none running on that launcher as those are still active even if you use another launcher.
5) live wallpapers suck battery like crazy. While they are nice eye candy to view, they are not worth the drain they cause. Even when you are in a app, just like the widgets, they are draining your battery.
Update: Some live wallpapers are better on battery drain than others, but they still drain battery either way. I will not use a live wallpaper as it serves no purpose other than eye candy, and eye candy on a phone I can live without.
6) Task killers. Yeah not going to touch this one as everyone who reads these forums should know better by now.
7) check individual programs as you install them and make certain they do not autoupdate content. Pulse news reader is a good example of a program that pulls data in the background even when you haven't used it in weeks. Really is it going to kill you to hit refresh when you load it?
Update: If you are using the AT&T program "Mark the Spot", it constantly is checking device performance and is constantly checking your location for it to "work". Be sure to watch this app as it drains a lot of battery through out the day.
8) turn off bluetooth, gps, and wifi when you are not actively using them. Wifi when on is always scanning the area for networks, bluetooth is always actively broadcasting (on some phones) and who needs gps when you aren't on the move.
Update: If you are experiencing a switch from H+ to Edge frequently such as in your home where you have wifi running and do not have a AT&T cell device, then turn off your data connection. Your phone is constantly trying to connect to the H+ network when it isn't already connected and draining power. If you are on WiFi, then your data connection is not needed.
I have heard Tasker is great for setting up an automatic script on your phone to do it for you so you don't have to think about it, but remember that all extra programs including tasker eat away at your battery and without real world testing, I can not promise you will see an improvement or a loss in battery.
You can also use APNDroid to do it manually if you would rather have full controll of your data connection.
9) Quit watching porn on your phone. Use your computer for that. Ok maybe I am the only one who does this but I doubt it. Alot if the free poem sites use flash videos and the more you use flash the faster your battery drains.
Update: Yes I know this is hard (no pun intended) for some of you to do, but the idea is sound. Using flash videos (the bulk (again no pun intended) of porn videos use flash).
These are not the only ways to have a great battery and this information may not be useful to you, but I can go nearly 20 hours of moderate to heavy phone use and still have anywhere from 40 to 60 percent battery left at the end of the day.
If anyone has any other advice that they feel should be listed here, please let me know and I will gladly add it to the mix.
Good luck folks.
Addition (5/12/11)
10) For those of you with the .83 update, please keep in mind that the update now forces you onto the EDGE (2G) Network if it can receive a better signal/stable connection. If you notice you are on EDGE more often than the H+ network, then disable your data connection. What is happening is that even though you have a solid connection to the EDGE network, your phone is constantly seeking the H+/3G networks thus using much more battery life than before. If you are at home or somewhere where your phone can connect to a wifi network, consider turning off the Data network. You should also disable your data connection whenever you are in a No Signal area. Again the same problem happens when you have no signal.

Advice from other Members:
From Deggy
I would like to add to the OP's list of things to do to improve battery life:
Turn off date when not in use for a long period of time like work or school. Settings -> Date manager -> Date delivery -> uncheck Backround data and Data enabled. Don't worry, you'll still get your texts and phone calls.
The Market is a big drainer. Market -> hit menu -> settings -> change notify me -> do not notify me.
Those two are the big ones to worry about IMO.
The other tips are either cliche stuff or other people said already. Wifi off, GPS off, brightness down to 0-20%, ect. Auto sync is killer.
I unplug my phone at 9AM and come home from work at 9PM and my phone says 75% with moderate use (Circle battery widget uses 1% increments). 3-4 phone calls. A LOT of texting (wifey likes text me). Internet during 30 minute lunch. Play Words with Friends a good amount.
I don't use live wallpaper but I do use a darker colored static one. Only got 4-5 widgets on my screen. 3 home screens. Using Launcher Pro.

In some of the other battery threads, ppl have been commenting on how they've had success in extending the battery life after a hard factory reset. What that basically does is it deletes and regenerates the batterystats.bin file in /data/system and if the battery was essentially mis-calibrated prior to the reset, the reset fixes it thus giving better measurements. ie. perhaps after 10hrs of usage the phone might say u have 5% left, but in reality you could have 40% left.. the regeneratin of batterystats.bin would recalculate that correctly
if you want the benefits of having that reset process but rather not go through having to restore all ur apps/back them up.. u could always manually go and delete the batterystats.bin file (only if you're rooted). i would recommend deleting the file after fully charging the phone overnight then unplug it so that it generates the file again. if you'd prefer an app to do this for you automatically you could always go to the marketplace and get 'battery calibration' app for free and it does the same thing

The following was posted on the MotoAtrix forums on Motorola's website. https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/51776
I've seen a lot of posts in a lot of threads about how to save battery life on the Atrix. So, I figured I'd start a consolidated thread on the matter. These are the tips 'n tricks I've used, and I can get 2 days of battery life on the Atrix now.
1. When I first got the Atrix, before turning it on, I charged it for 4 hours. After turning it on, I let it run until it died, then re-charged for 8 hours. I did that for a full week. They say that this isn't needed with the new-fangled batteries, but I have always done this, and have always gotten great results.
2. Live wallpapers are not your friend, especially in two circumstances: 1. you use your phone a lot, and 2. you use the stock unlock screen where everytime the phone wakes the live wallpaper is playing. Granted, they don't eat up much battery, but if you're looking to get every ounce/percentage out of your phone, it's a luxury you can leave at home.
3. Did you install a new launcher? If so, did you clear out BLUR? I had my BLUR interface up and running with widgets and shortcuts, etc, etc. When I switched to ADW I noticed an increase in battery drain. I re-loaded BLUR and deleted all apps, widgets, etc so BLUR is blank. I now have great battery life with ADW running.
4. Widgets - ugh. They're pretty, they're big, they're animated, and they eat battery like bees eat pollen. Be mindful of them, and be willing to accept the consequences of the "cool factor".
5. Screen timeout. Yes, it's annoying to unlock your phone every 5 minutes, but you do save battery life with a 1-minute or less timeout option set.
6. Close your apps! Many apps, games especially, are fantastic at running in the background on Android, but they're sucking battery. They all restore to your previous position quite well, so if you're done for a few hours, exit it instead of just going back to your launcher screen.
7. "back" vs. "home" - the back button (the reverse arrow) does a much better job of closing down programs than the home button which just brings up your home screen, leaving whatever you were doing to hungrily consume battery like zombies on a corpse.
8. "manage apps" is your friend - go to your app tray, hit the menu button, and select "manage apps" - you can see all the running apps and kill them selectively. Some, like Facebook, Skype, and others, will stay there as long as the phone is on once you use it, unless you kill it. Be forwarned though, you'll stop getting notifications if you do this - another informed tradeoff. I do this once every few days, or if the Atrix seems sluggish.
9. Screen brightness - the "auto" setting doesn't work all that well, but I highly recommend leaving it there, and/or using a screen brightness toggle widget on your home screen to manage this carefully. Screen brightness on maximum will yield the best viewing experience but it does drain battery the fastest of all.
10. Choose your BLUR accounts wisely - like widgets, if you have LinkedIn and Facebook connected through BLUR, it will run ALL THE TIME. Using the native apps from the market will definitely decrease your overall drain and give you better control over when and how your battery is consumed by those services.
11. Auto-kill or be killed - A good rule of thumb for me is to only auto-end a task if you know exactly what it is, and it didn't come with the phone. Chances are if you don't recognize it, even if it looks like something you don't need running, leave it be. If it's something you installed from the Market, and you want it to auto-end, have a field day. If you put something on the auto-end list that the Atrix needs, it will just keep re-starting it. This draws processor time and battery and isn't worth it.
12. (credit: Itsallgood) Check your profile - "settings -> battery" and look at the bottom half of the screen. The Atrix supports multiple battery saving profiles that allows you to control "night time" and whether to actively sync data all the time, never, or only during certain hours. Push mail and active data sync consumes battery at a steady pace. In addition, 3rd party apps (like Settings Profiles) can be downloaded to further tweak and customize everything from vibrate mode, screen, data sync, and more. The more customized your experience to fit your needs only when you need specific services, the better your battery life will be.
Anyway - that's some to get started, feel free to add more!

You don't have to disable everything, but the things above such as the background data syncs serve no purpose other than to drain a battery. The sync will complete during the next wifi connection and by time you access your contacts it will be done. Besides it'd not like all your contacts change every 30 minutes.
The idea is not so much to limit the experience of android, but to remove the unused features that do nothing for.you. I mean who really needs a youtube widget when the shortcut gets you to youtube just as easily and doesn't drain your battery.
It's the same idea as startup programs on your computer. They serve no purpose other than to slow your system down. Sure quicktime or itunes might load a few seconds faster, but how often do you really load those programs.

the gmail app doesnt sync on its own because you turn off auto sync

Definitely a good list of things, but felt like commenting on the live wallpapers thing. From what I've experienced, it seems like it depends a lot on the wallpaper used. I initially thought the live wallpaper was one of the main reasons for the short battery life when I first got the phone so I switched to a normal wallpaper. I had that for about a week and generally saw a lot of improvements in battery life as a result of better management and the calibration cycles. After that week, I came across a live wallpaper I liked and decided to enjoy that feature for a bit more. If anything, it seemed like my battery life got a bit better. I've tested it a little, and there's no doubt that some of my live wallpapers drain battery more than others. I've tried switching between a standard wallpaper and my live wallpaper (galaxy live) and I really don't see much of a difference, if any, between the 2.
Question: Does freezing the blur home screen (via titanium backup) disable the widgets on it? I'm assuming it does, since it essentially makes that home screen non-existent as far as the phone is concerned.
Darrell, There are some really good suggestions. They also apply to other android phones too probably. I had a myTouch4G for a week until I decided that T-Mob just wasn't as good a value to me as AT&T. So I went back. I'll get an Atrix soon, or maybe some Tegra that comes out in a month or 2.
How do you switch to Motoblur from Launcher Pro and back again? Will I lose the customization that I've done?
Edit: Home Launcher

1) Calibrate your battery by letting if completely discharge and then charge it using the wall charger it came with. Do this at least three times so the phone has a chance to get real statistics.

Modern lithium batteries actually die faster if you fully drain them then recharge to full. I'm not saying you can't do it every so often for calibration purposes but it isn't recommended as a every day thing.

We aren't running them down for the batteries health, but more so that the phone will understand what full and what dead actually is.
Do not do this often as there is no point. As for damaging the battery, one website says it is bad while others say it is good. Do so at your own risk. I do not have a degree in science, so I can not say either way, however the steps above done once the phone is calibrated will help.

After 12 hours of moderate to heavy use today, I still have 50% battery remaining.
For the guy who's email stopped working, do not turn off all background data. That will stop the push settings I believe.

How I got my Battery Life Back!!

Through this forum and others, I was able to restore my battery life on the epic back to the 20 odd hours. I thought of writing my process here for the benefit of those who might be struggling with similar issues:
ROM: Clean GB
Tools: Better Battery Stats and Battery usage graph (BetterBatteryStats from the market. I think there is another one that is free. I will try and find it. However, the graph referred to is the one that is built it. When you see battery usage, click on the the top part and it shows the graph of battery drain. )
Observation: There is unusual usage of phone when the screen is off. The phone wakes up roughly once every 2-3 minutes even when the screen is off. Battery life between 3 and 5 hours. Emails do not sync or slow to sync.
1. Removing DRM files: The three said files were frozen using Titanium Backup. However, when I looked under battery usage/Android, I would still see DRM listed. So in the end, I UNINSTALLED all three files and the DRM was no longer listed. Not sure how much of a culprit it is but worth mentioning if you are freezing the files assuming they are not coming up. Check under Battery:
2. Calendar: This was the main culprit: Calendar storage was damaged on the phone and so, the phone was constantly polling to sync my calendar, in turn, running the battery down and making the phone slow. Cleared Calendar Storage using Titanium and that fixed the problem of syncing.
Emails:
1. Hotmail : Activesync (now on 1 hour polling)
2. Corporate: IMAP (1 hour)
(Above two running on Enhanced Email client). Not sure if standart client will also work, will test that and post later)
3. Gmail: using gmail app
Worth mentioning, that I used Enhanced Email and turned on logging to really see what was going on, hence coming to the issue of Calendar taking forever to sync.
3. SNS: The symptom was that SNS would be constanting restarting when seen under Applications/ Running services. Freezing the 2 sns files took care of that. Lost facebook status messages etc for contacts but made the phone faster.
4. KERNEL and CWM : Initially, although the phone was rooted, CWM was somehow, not FULLY installed. And for some reason, the phone would go to Sprint Recovery Menu. Also, worth mentioning, kernel usage was high. Installed the Clean_kernel and the latest CWM till I was satisfied the install was good and clean. A good way to test is to watch kernel usage on better battery stats and CWM behaviour when you go to Recovery.
5. Moved all content of SD card to PC and reformatted it. However, my SD card was fine, so did not see a change in performance, however, others might benefit, especially if you have movie files that the system is having a problem parsing.
I will add more if I think I missed something but doing the above took my phone from a paltry 3 hours on standby to more than 20 hours with usage. Totally acceptable and happy.
Hope this helps others.
Thanks, there's some interesting information in your post!
I cannot find either of those battery tools on the market... I also run clean GB...
I took into account what you mentioned, and removed SNS completely, hell I went a step further and just uninstalled the FB app. I will use the mobile site, and that is fine and dandy for me, I don't really need or want the constant notifications anyways.
I recommend the app Juice Defender, get the ultimate version, either pirate or paid, it is well worth it. Manages your 3g and wifi better, turns them off when the aren't needed, turns them on when they are. Really handy, has at least doubled my standby time.
I also recommend getting CPU Master, and having both it and voltage control on boot. CPU master lets you have profiles based on events, like the screen being off, or the battery getting to hot, again setup properly this also has done a number on my standby time.
Since I just flashed this kernel I haven't run a battery test yet, I am using Legendary 2.1 and IAP 2.0.6. Will run a test tonight to see how long the battery lasts for standby, hopefully it will turn on in the morning, it hasn't in the past very often.

The important part that I wanted to see was when the screen is off, is there any activity, meaning the phone is not truely speaking. At when the phone was at its worse, there was a activity roughly every 2 minutes. That was the main cause of the battery drain.

I cant say much about those tools cause I havent really used them. However, in my case, the problem was a bad calendar sync and SNS, I can see Juicedefender would maybe improve the battery life as it wont let the phone connect, but wont necessarily correct the issue at hand. Just my two cents.

FYI: I have the facebook app installed and it works fine. The problem is in the SNS when you put in your facebook info and it lets you sync fb events etc.
Also, by removing, I am hoping you mean you froze or deleted those two SNS files. Just watch Applications/Running to see if you see SNS there. If not, you are golden.
4hours of battery =) blazerRom is the best out right now. Thought it usually would be at 2% with 3g on and not wifi allday

I also highly recommend this app, and have realized enormous power savings from it. My phone takes microscopic sips of electrons when in standby with JD.
However, I most emphatically DO NOT recommend that anyone be a thieving, pond-scum, crook with the ethics of a crack whore and obtain a pirated copy of this app, as saramon has recommended above. The author if this app has spent a lot of their time developing it, and should be compensated fairly. It is one of the best supported, most often update apps around. For the value it provides, there really isn't any legitimate argument justifying stealing it to avoid a few bucks.
Shame, saramon, shame.
I purchased JuiceDefender but ended up uninstalling it. Much easier just to toggle wifi and sync on-off manually, rather than tweaking it constantly. I found that the app causes more connection hassles and permission annoyances which offset any battery saving benefits it offers, and is yet another ram-draining backround process that slows my phone.
Never said that I did, but not everyone can afford it, just sayin'

I had 2 questions. First, what exactly is SNS? I see it restarting a lot as well, but I've been afraid it was something important so I've always left it alone.
And how would ClockworkMod affect battery life? Doesn't that only come into play when going into recovery mode?
Thanks

If you have SNS restarting it's probably because you removed the stock "Feeds & Updates" widget that came with your phone. Either freeze SNS in Titanium Backup (rooted), put the F&U widget back on one of your screens (unrooted) or kill it after every reboot (unrooted and no F&U widget).

He's not suggesting that you did. He is just saying that you shouldn't suggest it to others.
Piracy is for children that want to feel savvy because they know how to steal Photoshop. Thepiratebay.org, kat.ph, isohunt, and the various novas aren't original or cool, everyone knows about them. The difference is that some people have grown up and understand that people that do work deserve to be paid for it.
Besides it is what? $2-3? Anyone with the intention to buy a product could afford that.
I bought After Effects, Sony Vegas, and Photoshop Elements. Elements I got on sale for $50. The others were a couple versions old and I got them for $300 and $150 respectively. I am a poor college kid. However, I know I can get a part time job and pay for the things I need and that's what I did. I only needed to work for about a month to buy all my software and now I have a legal license to use it. So Sony and Adobe won't try to steal the rights to everything I make >.>
In short, stuff only seems expensive if you have no intentions of paying for it in the first place. My family lives well below the poverty line and I still can afford a pretty decent production set up. I'm sure anyone could conjure up $2. It's less than a round trip bus ride.
I know this was long enough, but I figure I should mention this isn't an attack on you or anyone else. I feel very strongly about the subject and I would say this regardless of who brings the subject up. I have a lot of friends that disagree with me and I have pirated software in the past, I just think that people deserve the money they worked for. Perhaps prices could even go down if everyone actually paid for their software.
I got some life back out of my battery with CM7. Then went back to ERA legendary. I did all the following:
Wiped / reformatted the sd card, odined and repartitioned, odined ec05, odined CWM5, flashed ei22, flashed the rom, then kernel I wanted to try, multiple setups.... no avail. (Monitoring every combo with battery status)
What I have done now is repackaged the rom, removed the "stock" launcher (swapped for zeam) and a couple apks I though were pointless to me, and replaced the kernel so there is all only one flash. I am really starting to think mix_n_match flashing was causing an issue for me. Also, CWM 5 odined and not using the app is not giving me all the aformentioned issues or running as a background process...
So far my battery life is much better with one flash, but one thing I notice in all cases is after a reboot, better battery stats shows "system" under process tab, always highest on the list. Once charged it goes away until a phone call, reboot, and even after forced sync.

my troll post for the day.

Absolutely terrible battery life and overheating. known fix?

Is this a common issue with this phone ? It is 4 pm and my phone is at 27%. Unplugged it at 630am this morning . Hardly used it today, and already charged it during lunch time for 30 ,minutes , and charged on my way to work as well. It overheats significantly , to the point I have to take it out if my pocket because it's too warm. I'm always closing apps and try to keep brightness at a minimum. I forced switched to the v 20 from the Note 7, and god how I miss my note 7. I'm at a point were I have to carry an external battery with me even when I'm at home. Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like a bad unit that needs to be warrantied to me.

It depends on alot of things as to why its doing it.
Like how many apps have you tranfered over from an older device instead of starting from scratch.
What apps do you have running on V20?
What's the refresh rate on apps your running?
Do you have battery saver apps installed or app killer apps installed? If so, remove them from the phone.
Have you tried a factory reset?
How about a battery pull?
How long has this been going on?

If it's been going on since day one.
I would first start with a factory reset, than install apps straight from Google one by one.
Do not do transfers of apps. Especially when going from older android 6 to newer android 7.
Yes battery pull can fix issues over unknown heating. Had the issue myself a hand full of times off and on. But they have stopped.
But your problem sounds more like a bad app or a bad phone. I'd try the cleaning up of apps first before returning the phone.
I also had to ditch a Note 7. I have had the issue with TWO V20s. Apps dont really close and then the phone gets hot and drains the battery. It happens 2-3 times a week. This week, it was Facebook Sunday, Chrome Tuesday, and the Weather Channel app yesterday. I have to force stop the app to get it to stop. I have done factory resets, comlplete wipes etc. Nothing works. I have sent the phone back to LG, they "fixed" it , and 2 days later it was doing it again. LG won't do anything but "fix" it again, leaving me without a phone for 10 days, which is unacceptable. I'm going to switch to a different phone. Never buying another LG product, ever...
Either you have an app misbehaving or a bad phone. I can get 24-48 hours easy when using my v20 lightly. I never run out before the end of the day when using it moderate to heavy. Only time mine got warm and used battery was right after the last update while it had "upgrading Android" in the notification area. After it was done it cooled down and battery life is better than before the update.

Remove facebook app and messenger
Add another app...
The stock calculator, that comes pre-loaded just caused the phone to get hot and drain the battery after use.
Used the calculator for maybe a minute, then closed it. Phone got hot and the battery drained 10% in 5 minutes, until I force-closed the app.
Verizon is sending me a loaner Galaxy S5 to use, while I, once again, send the V20 back to LG for them to "fix".
Trying to build my case for getting out of this clunker, especially since a 2nd, refurbished, phone did the same thing.

This. Use your browser to access facebook. The most recent update for the Facebook app is a battery hog on all platforms.
I don't use the Facebook app or Facebook messenger app and have no battery issues. Get rid of them and see how it works. If it doesn't change anything then you need to try and remove some other apps until you can narrow it down.

FWIW, the Facebook app I had on my V20 was 2 updates old......I deliberately did not update it. Phone still overheats and drains the battery. The 2nd V20 - didn't even have Facebook on it, and had the same issue. In fact, it had NOTHING, other than what was on it, right out of the box.
It has happened to me 3 times now, I pull battery for about 2-3 minutes and whatever app or process causing it resets. I've tried closing recent apps, restart, etc. doesn't work. I have a temp monitor installed and it got up to 116F and the battery drops so fast. Just waiting it out to the Note 8.....................

If you're able to remember the last app you used, you can force-stop it in settings. That will save you the time of pulling the battery. Happened to me three times LAST WEEK.

It's the location services on the LG V20.
You need to go to settings > location services ... change it from "high accuracy mode" to "Networks only (Battery Saver)"
Also disable your Facebook app in the apps, and make sure you don't have Snap Chat installed, if you do go into Snap Chat and set the roaming data option in the app it will prevent it from constantly downloading updates in the background.

1. Networks only/Battery saver - I set it to that on every new phone I get., including both V20s. Phone has overheated with location turned completely off.
2. Facebook app has been disabled since it caused the overheat 1/15. Phone has overheated 3 times since, and FB is still disabled.
3.Don't have SnapChat installed.
This appears to be a fairly common issue. I have seen similar threads on AndroidCentral, Verizon community forums, droid-life to name a few.
I only charge once every two or three days and I'm a heavy user. Never had it get hot except when I was backing up in TWRP. Of course, I don't run Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram (but I do run Twitter, as a system app) or the advanced location services (HIGH) though.

My dad and I both have replacement devices due to the same issues. Anne then my dad's replacement just did it again, we're not happy and at&t isn't willing to do anything

That sucks. This is why I'm somewhat hesitant to root my device it seems riddled with problems. I have a feeling I won't be keeping the V20 for more than a year. I miss my HTC M8 that was a solid phone.
I have H990DS model and no overheating. I run a lot of apps but not Facebook!
I've had this phone for 3 months without serious issue. Perhaps something associated with Verizon is chewing your battery? I bought a spare battery early January and so far I haven't needed to use it. Start work at 6:30am and phone is nearing death at 10pm with moderate to heavy use.
The phone runs MUCH cooler than my HTC One M9 & M7. I'm very happy so far.

LOL Tell me I picked up a m9 after loving my m8, big disappointment. But the m9 makes a great hand warmer in the cold.
Looking at picking up a v20 or s7 edge. Reading the heat problems here is making wonder, don't want one more hot phone.
