Morning all!
I just wanted to say I'm a Sony Ericsson Ambassador based in one of the mobile network retail stores in the UK. If you have any questions you can't find the answers to either drop me a private message or send me something on twitter (SEyorkO2)
I'll do my best to get your questions answered and I'll also be posting information that I get my hands on (that I'm not forbidden to post )
I'm currently using the Arc as my primary phone and the Play as my bit on the side so these are my strongest subjects currently.
Look forward to hearing from you!
Due to lot's of questions coming through I'm going to write them all down and forward them onto the correct departments every Monday rather than constantly bombarding them. Once I get responses I'll post them at the bottom of this post.

Nice. Thanks for saying hi. Hoping to give you more questions when I get my SE XP (Xperia Play) back from service centre at SBE Limited.
Can you say if there are plans to integrate the PSN into the play or add trophy support?
Edit: Also there is a very cool PSN application for the android but is UK only. Do you know if there are plans to bring this app to the rest of the world? It has news, Blogs, friends and trophy list in it.
Edit 2: I have one more question. Who can we request a feature to? I love the Playstation app but I hate having to use three different launchers for my games. There is the Playstation app, the Pocket app and the normal desktop.
I would like the ability to add installed games to the Playstation app so I can slide the control pad and select any game I choose from the one that starts. So far some titles don’t show up there like the PSX games. I also have emulators that use the controls and would like that option. Or if sliding the controls down would give me a list of apps to run for instance a choice to run an emulator or the pocket app or the Playstation app. That would be cool.

I'll forward these onto my ADM and see if we can get some answers. WIth regards to the PSN intergration I believe there were plans for this before the play launched as we were told that the Play would have the same functionality as the Sony Ericsson Aino had. However now it all appears to be unofficial rumour.
I feel your pain regarding the multiple launchers for games and also the fact that they won't auto rotate while browsing through my selection.
We are constantly being told that both the Play and the Arc will be receving major new features with software updates so heres hoping for more playstation intergration. I'll see what I can dig up for you though!
are you serious? So it's not going to be tied into the PSN? What a load of ****...
We need better pc software, the sony ericsson pc suite is rubbish. Its like a cheap piece of software you get with a no brand piece of electrical equipment
and needs updating.
Any chance this will happen?

I bought the phone for emulators.
If you was hoping for it to be a proper Sony handheld system you should of waited to buy the NGP. (vita or w/e).
The Xplay is first and foremost an Android phone with Android and Gameloft games.
I didnt see any mention of titles like God of War or LBP being made for it. And if Sony Ericsson actually did claim this, i wouldnt of believed it anyway.
SE is not Sony.
SE is a London based/Swedish input company that works and is a division for Sony Japan.
It is a different entity from Sony.

No you see, that's where you're wrong:
"Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB is a joint venture established on October 1, 2001[1] by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to manufacture mobile phones. The stated reason for this venture is to combine Sony's consumer electronics expertise with Ericsson's technological knowledge in the communications sector. Both companies have stopped making their own mobile phones."
I'm still a firm believer that Sony will support this phone in ways. I'm not banking on them releasing amazing games and ps1 titles, that doesn't bother me. I have fpse for that, and the Android Market, Gameloft also does what I need it to. I'm just hopeful that we will get some decent games from Sony. But I'm happy having it for the emulators for the moment
I personaly could care less if sony does anything for this phone. I already got everything I want for it. There is enough to keep me happy for years to come.

Hmmm, that is why it is a "Sony Playstation" certified phone?
I bought this phone because it was Playstation certified and I fully expect Sony to support it with some great games “like” God of War. GOW port would be perfect and make it worth the purchase but I Have them both on my PSP so I don’t really care. But I do expect better than regular android games with improper button support.

Sony "may" port games over, but highly unlikely.
Here's how i see it -
1) Ericsson (a swedish company) struck a deal with Sony and merged into a telecommunications company called Sony Erriccsson. They moved headquarters to London.
2) Sony Ericcson made a new phone with a playstation pad and got it certified by Sony Entertainment, Playstation division.
3) All Sony would of done was say "yep, make the phone half decent, get our brand on it and we will certify it".
I doubt anybody on the gaming side of Sony even got involved with the production of this phone.
This phone to me is a pure Android phone that can play emulators with a decent control pad.
Thats all i wanted. Thats all i will get. IMO thats all it is ever going to be.
You’re wrong. Sony wouldn't certify the phone without plans to support it. Ericson is part of Sony just like Sony makes Toys, TVs, among other things.
Yea but sony has bigger and better things out there, a playstation phone is whatever to them they brought it out to satisfy a certain crowd nothing more just you watch

Has anyone noticed how ridiculously expensive and overpriced applications are in the Windows Mobile Marketplace?
For one, their selection of applications are terrible. So far they're just a bunch of badly designed generic apps that don't feed any real purpose. The games are horrible too.
The only decent application I wanted to buy was Pac Man, but that's like £5 !!! for a measly game that probably only has 5 levels and I'm only going to play when I'm bored.
. I just want a decent Twitter application that has kinetic scrolling and doesn't show that horrid side-bar control.
. A decent media player with visualisations and coverflow.
. A few nicely designed touchscreen games including ones like Tweeter that makes use of the G-sensor.
It makes no sense for Windows to release all these devices and advertise that WM is a social device when their marketplace is a bunch of bollocks.

I agree. I am very disapointed with the marketplace myself. I was expecting thousands of high quality cheap and free apps but that's not what we have yet. I am hoping that this is only due to the fact that it's been 10 days since its release and must be hard to get thousands of apps ready to go in the first few months. I am confident though that microsoft is ready to compete with android and iphone so must surely have something more in mind than they currently have.
Unfortunately it has nothing to do with Microsoft. The WinMo software companies haven't adjusted yet to that fact that there is a central place for the average user to hit and find their competition. Something like SPB could be as pricey as it wanted, because it could take the average user forever to find any quality alternatives. They have the advertising dollars, placement on carrier websites, etc. Now there's a spot for a smaller competitor to get the same exposure. But it'll take time for them to pop up.
$30 for any mobile app is retarded. I'm really disappointed that since release day, I'm only seeing 10 new apps in the store. Maybe the "what's new" button is broken, but there's a couple on the results page I installed day 1 of Marketplace being open
The lack of apps is probably not helped by the fact that, as I understand it, Microsoft charge an extra $10 or so for each country to list the app in (and require that the app be localized for that country) so I'd assume that a good chunk of people developing apps in the US aren't going to push their apps beyond the US (I'm no developer so haven't read the full pricing details but that's the gist of what I've seen in some MS developer forums with people questioning why their apps aren't available)
It'll especially be true for free or cheap apps - if you've made a free app, would you pay out to make it available to other countries?
The only reason I can see for restricting apps to a country is if they are purely regional - TV schedules for a particular country, or train schedules or something.
Steve.
Well, I'm in the US, so not really an issue. Trust me, not missing much if they are actually holding out on pushing to other countries.
I'd also guess the word is out to developers that Marketplace is a good spot for their software to turn freeware and end up on a torrent so perhaps they are holding off until Microsoft fixes the security.

I would if that were the case. Unfortunately, Marketplace has been exposed to developers months before it was officially released, which is why I am confused as to why there are so many cheap applications. I'm sure that there will be more applications coming soon, but I'm more concerned about the pricing and quality of applications. When I watched the first keynote last year on the coming of Marketplace I had higher hopes than his.
I realise that some iPhone developers have investment from other companies and some of them even have a development team working on the apps, but still.. look at the type of stuff Android have compared with Windows, it's ridiculous. It's as if no real developer wants to develop on the WM platform.
I feel that their advertising campaigns are misleading. They're trying to get across the fact that WM is now social and more application orientated when so far all I can find on the marketplace are overpriced applications that seem like it was developed for WM5.
Personally I don't think 6.5 is going to be a huge success, TechCrunch has already given it a bad review. WM7 better be different.
Btw. In the world of technology, there's no room for 'Oh give it a chance' type attitude. Technology companies usually have once chance of pulling something off. Hence the reason why companies like Google or Apple spend millions of dollars on market resource, trial testing and development research.
Marketplace? Pah!

I've been relying on the RSS feed from this fine site for the past couple of years or so, since my original TyTN, TyTN II and now my Touch Pro 2. It's a great site, has introduced me to great programs like NoniGPSPlot, has new applications all the time and finally - it's all free (and not warez free, but genuine software).
Great stuff - Microsoft saw what Apple were doing too late and have done too little me thinks to succeed.
I love my Windows Mobile phone; but Apple's iPhone taught Microsoft and other mobile developers how important eye candy in a phone OS was. Google's Android OS will be taking the lions share of future mobile phone sales and I see Android phones surpassing the iPhone.
Unless Microsoft do something right, not many peeps will want a Windows Mobile device in a few years time...
So far the only good to come out of the app store is Zenonia...badass rpg... 10 bucks though But well worth it in my opinion! If you like old school snes hack and slash rpg's, this game is for you. Full sound, decent story, just great overall. For me, there's point in playing my old favorite snes games on my phone because with sound, to me its pointless. and not using sound is the only way to get an snes emulator to run smooth; regardless of which one it is ( morphgear, smart-whatever its called, or pocketsnes

@Paulplex - Thanks for the link. I know I can get free applications quite easily, that's what I've done so far. However most of them aren't to 6.5 standards, the majority of them are still coded for use on old WM5 phones.
When you spend hundreds on a phone you expect to install applications on it that are intended for such a high-end device. The only application which is worth installing is the Myspace and Facebook app, and even those aren't great.
I regard my phone as my house in a way. When we buy a house, we intend to fill it up with furniture, usually the more expensive the house, the higher quality the furniture. The same should apply to phones, in that instead of furniture we require high quality applications. But where are they? SPB is the only one I can think of.
do you people think that bill gates and the people at microsoft are just gonna sit around and allow apple to dominate the app frenzy in the market for pdas and devices? dont u think that most people at microsoft all have winmo devices? do u really think any employee would have an apple iphone?...so of coursse thousands of new gsensor apps are on their way of being placed on the marketplace or in development...obvious with android showing that they have developers also who are pumpin out apps for them..microsoft is doin the same thing..give them time the winmo app store just came out..and a gsensor phone for a winmo device first showed up only a yr ago..so they have a bit of software catching up to do with these new devices. HTC thank god...droped 6 new phones for the north american market just this month alone..with the tp2 being the first in september..(htc pure, htc hero, htc tilt 2,htc imagio, htc mytouch) so basically with 6.5 also droped...htc has done their part by stacking microsoft with a heavy set and multy array of phones to crush the competition i.e iphone 3gs or whatever version its at now. microsoft is not gonna sit around and allow apple to dominate the app market..and they sure as hell arent gonna let android..a new OS that has no business gettin their OS on htc devices, surpass them either...remembr bill tried to buy out google but they rejected a couple yrs ago. And u all know bill gates has a winmo devices, prolly a htc touch hd or the new imagio...dont u think he wants a huge selection of apps himselve? trust..were not the only ones on the heals of microsoft to get these developers in line..and get these apps rolled out...plus half the apps apple has for the iphone are useless and they are just puttin them in commercials to show that they have a **** load of apps...half the apps they have could be bunddled up with other apps like how a spb traveler or mobile shell app is but they are just tryin to show off how many apps they have..plus most of all the developers for apple just have the change a couple scripts around in their apps and all the same apple apps could be made into cabs and become winmo apps...so the **** isnt hard..the microsoft winmo team execut8ves or w/e u wanna call them need to get their marketing department working full throttle and start shipping new apps with these new phones...i repeat HTC has done their part..now its time for the software to catch up...
"Windows" isn't a device, "Windows" doesn't release devices, and "Windows" doesn't sell devices. "Microsoft" isn't any of those things, either. Microsoft is a company that produces an OS that runs on LOTS of devices (some phones, some PDAs, and a whole lot of things that are neither).
Plenty of time for this thing to get up to snuff.
But that said, the real problem is that while there aren't that many WM OS out there, (5, 6, 6.1, 6.5) and most apps will pretty much install in either, the different hardware config makes it a different ballgame, especially with games, no pun intended. Some phones have buttons, some don't. Some games will work only in landscape, some will not, some will work on both. And not all phones are exactly finger friendly. They're meant to be used with a stylus for the most part, the finger's a secondary thing.
So yea, these developers will have their hands full, unless of course they want to limit their market to particular devices only.
So that being said, my gripe is that none of these apps are telling me they're to be used in a particular hardware platform.
@moegdaog, I'm a developer myself, so I realise the number of new applications that will come soon, however that's not what I was specifically talking about.
I'm more concerned about the level of development on applications and games. Why so many developers opt to develop for iPhone isn't because of a bias view-point, it's because the tools they provide mean that they can develop a high-end application and start earning money as soon as it's in the marketplace.
However the type of developers are not the same. iPhone developers are usually younger, multimedia orientated so they probably have skills in web, graphics and illustration, where as Microsoft developers are usually a lot older and more prone to developing utility (function) based apps and have very limited skills in anything else. Most developers aren't able to outsource and so they are left with a rubbish application.
My worry is that yes there will be many applications within marketplace but will they actually be worth all that money and will any investors support the development of these apps. Also how will these applications differ from what we have seen on Android and iPhone.
everybody knows that sony will release ps suite later this year for the ngp, xperia play and (other) playstation certified devices.
it will be their own store for exclusive games like ps 1 and maybe ps2 games.
but can we see exclusive games built especially for the suite???
i can see that happening with the ngp released and more playstation devices so the market for the suite will get bigger and that will attract developers to make games for it.
I really cannot wait for the PlayStation Suite. A bunch of mediocre games on my phone at the minute don't really do justice to what this phone is capable of. I am really looking forward to getting some quality gaming time on this phone, seeing as I am pretty much stuck with it for the next two years! Although I do remain skeptical about PS2 games supposedly happening on this phone... but where there's a will there's a way, right?
IMHO I think there will be a lot of speculation & hype over this Playstation suite, and when it arrives it will probably suck.
For all I know, I purchased Medievil 1 in PSN Store. Can I play it on my XperiaPlay?
Questions like those are the ones which define if it will suck or not.
No, PSN will never be a part of 'suite' and you will never be able to log into your PSN account or download PSN purchased content to your phone.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. While it might not do it now, PSN has been a major focus of Sony's lately. The recent debacle may change some things, but before that Sony was setting a lot of groundwork in place to put PSN and it's media-focused extension, Qriocity, across all of their devices.
They restructured Sony Computer Entertainment and pull the network services out and create SNE Platform:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/24/sony-shuffles-gaming-organizations-so-long-sce-hello-new-sce/
Then they expanded PSN into Qriocity and are planning on put that across numerous devices according to this interview with Jack Tretton:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/engadget-interview-sceas-jack-tretton-talks-sony-ngp-announce/
Qriocity shares the same account information as PSN and has already showed up PS3 and PSP. The Sony S1 and S2 tablets will be Qriocity and PlayStation Certified devices, which seems to imply both PS Suite and PSN connectivity:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/sony-to-launch-two-honeycomb-tablets/
Lastly, Sony is planning on bringing the (or a) PS Store to Android with the PS Suite as mentioned in the interview with Jack Tretton and in this link:
http://ae.playstation.com/playstationsuite/
So I would be very surprised if the Xperia Play didn't eventually get at least the same kind of integration with PSN/Qriocity that the PSP has now after the PS Suite is finally in place.
Of course, once that does happen, I can only hope that they would allow you download the PSOne Classics you've already purchased to Play. All reports have said that you need to repurchase content. So it makes me wonder whether it will be the same PS Store or not. I guess we won't know for sure until Sony actually gets the PS Suite up and running.
So can someone explain, I am not complaining or anything, but where is the PlayStation suite games (Not the android ones)? Have they released anything more? I know that there's few of them on the marketplace, you can also use PSXerpia tool to play PS1 games, but where are the official ones? I mean there's no awesome titles released, phone was released back in march, is it dead or something? They still making ICS for it so..?
All I found is this:
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=Sony+Computer+Entertainment+Europe+Limited ...1 game?
I mean this phone (as I know) is little more powerfull then PSP, and all I see is one PS1 game in my region. Where are all the Sony exclusive games? God Of War, some MGS, GTA LCS or anything? Are they even planning to release anything? I am confused.

This is Sony (Sony Ericsson before) not Sony Computer Entertainment.
This isn't an official PlayStation phone. It's an Android phone that's PlayStation certified. There's a difference.
This is what many people thought when it was announced/launched. Don't expect any SCE published games launching exclusively to the Xperia Play.

You can fake your provider to whatever is most convenient and you will be able to purchase some official PlayStation games from the Android Market if they are available.
I faked to Orange (Canada) and was able to purchase games with my US account.
Just use FPse mate
They have been supporting the Xperia play since it came out and you can play all your favorite Ps1 Games 100% relived.
You can also check out N64oid for a Nintendo emulator or try the other one. Mupen64 but it supports the analog sticks.
I have personally tested Mario 64 on it and it's amazing.
Now onto the bit about XP being more powerful then a PSP?
All of that hope is smacked down with the release of this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Vita
The vita is 2x faster than a Xperia play and it's the next generation PSP coming to NA very soon. SCEA will only be worried about making games for that.
So if you wanted an android computer and you got a xperia. you have made a wise choice . if you wanted a gaming device 100% purely. you made a bad one I think
Nah it's ok, I am not big time gamer or something, just wondering.
I have 10 games available and the Official PS app when I check that link. It is ludicrous that it varies so much across the European Union. Ridiculous
I have 10 to. Uuhm ps app? Which link?

they are converting games to work for some devices.
thought it would be nice to update you lot since alot of people ask about psp games on xperia play or any devices

Playing your own PSone games on Plays native emulator
Would be pretty neat

Someone refer this guy to Yifan Lu's PSXperia.
actually i was looking and ive been wondering if they will overhaul the emulator to stop the current flaw if not we have a chance otherwise we need another good developer to start reverse engineering the moment it comes out
True True he's a noob to this no sweat lol

I dont know did you understand my point or did i misunderstand everything you said
I know about PSXperia, my question was about native PSP emulation.
I think i just didnt understand you but it hurts nobody to clear things up

At the moment i guess psp emulation is taboo, and it will probably never emulate games like kingdom hearts, crisis core, or dissidia, yeah im a square fan, sorry

please please just forget about psp emulation its extremely hard and wont happen on our device by any devs on here. unless sony announces that they are releasing a psp emulator in playstation suite (about a 2% chance) then out it to the back of your head and never mention it. it just wont happen for technical reasons.

My keyword was IF
If these upcoming PSP titles for PS store are truly emulated, could it be cracked/hacked/tamed or just used for our own games just like PSXperia does with PSX tittles ?
But i agree its unlikely, they are possibly ported, but if if

well i believe they are ported so have been changed ti run natively on arm devices (such as our play) but if it is emulated there is a slight chance that it could be abused in such a way as psxperia is.
on a side note if you download any ps1 games off the market such as medievil they have updated them to 1.0.4 which has a license check each time it starts which may stop psxperia working in ice cream sandwich with a updated crash apk to 1.0.4 if they force it
(this is actaully bad as it means your phone uses alot more data checking licenses which doesnt bother me as i have unlimited data allowance but other users may get annoyed if they have a small limited amount of data)
Dear Gameloft.
What have you done to this game... New update made that game even worse, many players are dissatisfied, you have lost many stars in their reviews, they comply for the same things and it keeps piling up in Google Play...
I have three problems to describe.
First of all this update totally breaks Xperia PLAY controls - touchpad acting like a real thumbstick like on PS3 or XBOX 360 controller? Very VERY bad idea, we are barely able to aim, especially in multiplayer mode. We have TOUCHpad not thumbstick,
Second problem is you made the game slower. It started to lose FPS in many places, the whole gameplay is not fluent. The previous version was so beautifully looking and so fluent... Besides, changing graphics in main menu was a total nonsense. Why add bloom, HDR, blur? It runs so slow sometimes I must push the button twice to select some options.
The third problem is your multiplayer mode. It's slow, laggy, glitchy and easy to hack with tools that instantly sets the level to 50 and also there are many hackers with autoaim, god mode... They lasted for the whole match making their team a sure winner. Many players were quitting the matches because what is the fun with being killed more than 30 times by the same person and being unable to kill him?
So my (and many other users of Xperia PLAY phones and also many older phones users) is:
- revert for the previous controls OR at least make the right touchpad aiming "swipe to aim". For example Shadowgun guys made it better - their game had the same controls in the first version of the game - right touchpad acted like real thumbstick. Many people said this game had the worst aiming EVER. After the update they improved the controls, aiming is WAY BETTER.
- make the graphics FASTER, not BETTER. We don't need super ubercharged textures, awesome and jawdropping special effects (EVEN.IN.THE.MAIN.MENU...). We just need a nice shooter game which delivers us awesome experience and fun from playing such advanced and great game on our phones.
- finally improve the multiplayer mode. Make it faster, better, safer and more balanced.
I know the "iUsers" have better support on many games released by your company mainly because of frequent updates. Many people think you just sometimes forget about Android users. We want to play and have full experience and fun too!
Yours faithfully,

What do you think? They surely support Apple devices much better than Android ones, this must end...

I think they still don't understand, and will not. Gameloft is iOS lovers, Android is on 2nd place, always -.-.
PS: Polak potrafi, Romanie .
But i think the swipe to aim on the older version was much worse than the actual version. Thumbsticks work not bad if you get used to it and you cam turn arround much quicker wich is importend in multiplayer...

Yeah I also think the controls are slightly better now, but still not perfect.
As long as Gameloft still have paying customers they won't give a **** whether they're happy or not
I agree.
I dont understand how you could make LEFT thumbstick works as a 8-way controller like arrow keys while on-screen controls work perfectly
RIGHT touchpad is slugish and has some weird latency while on-screen, again, works perfectly.
MC3, first game that forces me to use touchscreeb instead of dedicated controls...
Don't every buy a Gameloft game again. That's the only language they understand. Seriously, people, big companies are not there to serve you, they want you to serve them instead. They're deaf to you.
This is Gameloft. Myself and others notified them of a problem with Shadow Guardian that basically makes it impossible to complete the game probably 6 months ago. They have still not fixed it.
That said regarding MC3, I thought the controls improved with the update.....
Hm. I updated but haven't played the new update yet, so I'll have to check it out first.
The controls are annoying me. The buttons are direct to the other button so that you press sometimes the wrong button

Gameloft isn't competent about handling issues on iOS either.
They make the cheapest product they can make to impress the casual gamer's eye, then do whatever they must to get the most money for it without caring how "good" the product actually is.
ShadowGun released with Xperia PLAY controls FAR worse than SC:Conviction or anything Gameloft ever did... took one dedicated update, and boom!... Shadowgun's controls are on Dead Space's level.
Gameloft's a very big company... bigger than Madfinger. They can be that competent, they just choose to rush products instead. Eternal Legacy was released without the native ability to walk in a straight line on the touch-pad. They've been aware of this for nearly a year now... and done nothing about it.
This is one of the many reasons I love iOS and Apple and Gameloft

I got the same kind of reply about Shadow Guardian.... 4 months ago... they still haven't fixed it.
I was thinking of getting MC3 through the gameloft store (which supports paypal, unlike the android store -.-), but after reading this I think i should just wait for a better update.
Verizon Xperia Play R800x
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum. I have a few issues and hope to resolve them. I'm a wholesaler of electronic gadgets and other merchandise. I have a bunch approx. 50 Verizon R800x in great working condition, but I have a few questions. I have conflicting report everywhere and trying to get to the bottom of it and figured developers and guys who know about this stuff would be the best to turn to
1. Is there a way to unlock the phones? Apparently the SIM card slot does exist but it's blocked off by a plastic blocker. I've been told it might be as easy as ripping the plastic blocker out, putting in a foreign sim and unlocking it using a PIN? However, from other forums I read that that's not possible.
2. Is there a place on this forum to sell merchandise or am I allowed to advertise the sale of these phones?
Thanks,

Pretty sure the R800x can't physically load foreign SIM cards, since it's CDMA (which doesn't use SIM cards). The hardware is just left over because they didn't want to spend a lot of money changing the specs, but it's not useable
The Marketplace didn't allow professional sellers the last time I checked.
