I know this has been discussed, but I wanted some statistics. Also, I plan on updating to the EF10 modem because I have heard better things about it, but I have been doing well on the EF02 modem. My concerns are if I switch to the EF10 modem and it's WORSE, then when I switch back to the EF02 modem it won't be as good as it was originally. I mean EF02 modem has been good to me, but if I can get something better, then I'd rather have that.
I am running Stock Deodexed EF02 ROM.
Also, I forget. How will I get rid of the annoying message when it asks me to update? And if I get rid of that message, will I still be able to go back to EF02 and vicea versa?
Thanks guys.
only using the EF02 modem because my wifi won't connect to my router when i'm using EF10. :/
They both crash a bunch. EF02 doesn't get bad though. When it's on fire, it's on fire.
When I originally flashed to the same ROM as you, sir; I flashed with EF02, but allowed the EF10 update, charged, got great signal, never missed a call, or a message (except when there was an apparent county wide data outage... >.>) and got superb battery life.
I have, however, switched back down to EF02 just for dev purposes, and have really enjoyed it. Everything seems to be reliable (as much as Sprint allows) and runs smooth, great reception etc etc... I have yet to fully test the battery, but if it comes close to EF10's 16 hours I got on heavy use, I will be happy. I got through a full 10 hour day with 50% charge left on light to medium use. So I am thinking that the battery life on EF02 is better.
Either way? Both beat EC05 into the ground... over... and over... and over, and then urinate on them and grow pretty EF Flowers.
Once you switch to EF10 and reboot it will do a check, hit cancel quick and you won't see this message again, same goes for when you switch back to EF02. I just installed EF10 again after someone mentioned this, and I love it atm (3hours no crash, same TWS as DK28 sofar in my work area in a warehouse...

Playing with both
At first I got notably higher speeds on EF10 (using the speedtest app several times), but then they leveled out to about what EF02 was showing before I changed. Upload speeds on EF10 were dreadful at first but then leveled out as well. I'll give it a shot for a few days & see how it works--admittedly, I didn't use EF02 for very long, so I don't really have anything to lose by going to EF10.
EF02 for me. First day I got speed of 1800 kbps on download and 600 kbps upload, but over the next couple days they went down a small margin.
EF10 didn't show so strong at first, so I jumped back to EF02. Only main issue is how spotty both can be at times. Never dealt with as many no signals as much with EC05.

And GPS took like 5mins to lock on.was only taking like 10 secs on the JL5 modem. Was also Timing out all the time! so I switched Back!!! Stay Far away!!! My speed and gps are improved so how about folks just try it out for themselves.

I wish I knew the reason behind it (other than possibly placebo effect), but I've seen this same type of reporting for basically all the leaked modems. Some say it's crap, others say it's the best yet. Just try out the newest release and make your own decission. ALso, my advice is to REALLY try it out for awhile, not run one speedtest where you're sitting then flash back because it's 5% slower.
F.Y.I. I'm not taking a shot at the OP, I realize his/her claims of speed differences are significant and KA5 may very well be a terrible modem for him/her.

Im starting think it may depend on your geographic location also. JL5 worked great for me, and i flashed KA5 today, and it seems to be great also. i've noticed my battery might be falling a little faster with KA, but its a little less buggy when switching networks and what not. Progress in one way or another.
Ill prolly try it again with Nero 5.

Not scientific but:
JL5 downloads speeds:
5505
5033
5215
5536
4450
JL5 average: 5147.8
KA5 download speeds:
5526
5309
5132
5309
5653
KA5 average: 5385.8
I just flashed it so Im not sure an batt life. Reconditioning now.
I also had a big drop with KA5.
KA5 speetest = 1.3mbs
JL5 speetest = 3.5mbs
I also noticed the random signal drops with the KA5 modem. Back to JL5 for me. It is just not a stable modem.
Jl5 gave me 2 bars and I live like 8 blocks away from a t mobile tower, now with ka5 always full bar!
I flashed nero 5, which includes KA5 and its literally doubles my speeds, download from 1 to 2 to 2 to 4. If its good enough for team whiskey its plenty good for me
Maybe this is one of the reasons we don't have official 2.2. The lack of constant results

I don't know.. but ka5 is working fine for me.. i installed the stock one with no root or cwm... just stock.. it's working fine so far. The GPS took a while to get a lock then after installing the gpsrestore, now it gets a lock fast.. my settings from j16 was all intact, even the apps that normally won't show up in the market with the leaked froyo rom are there, swiftkey, amtalee, etc. I didn't do a factory reset, just flashed through odin without a pit file...
loving it..
Or maybe the reason why the apps are in the market because this is the newest leak and the apps are available..?? the best part is, the marketplace hasn't been updated yet to the latest version, i hate the new market.. lol..oh and i can use swiftkey, the android keyboard is still not available though..
edit.. amtalee is not available in market.. ughh but still in my phone from not doing a factory reset

I'm not having issues. On my way to work I noticed a drop in signal and it took awhile to get back to having one but the towers here suck big ones for some reason. I'll test again on my way home. At work and everywhere else since I have installed it I have noticed good results. Actually best yet *Knocks on wood*
Which radio are you using and why?
I noticed the new ED01 is unstable on 3G signal. It goes in and out for me. Not sure why. Might go back to EC01, but curious who see this issue on ED01 and was that the reason you downgrade?
I'm still on EB01 radio, never had a problem, aside from my poor location for reception.
EC01. I did notice minor loss in signal...but that's it...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
On EC01.
While on ED01 there were areas on my drive that paused my slacker streams. EC01 does not have that problem.
EC01 for me
EC01 radio with a EB01 rom - 3g has declined from the eb01 radio slightly, but not enough to notice most times.
Using EC01 with SuperClean 2.9.2..Nitro Ultimate Honeycomb theme..got slightly better reception and 3g signal than before when I flashed the EC01 radio..I'm in a concrete dorm room in Pensacola, FL..and anyone on Verizon is lucky to get even 1 bar in side..(ATT and GSM based phones get full signal though)..on the EB01 radio included in SC2.9.2...my signal would drop frequently and was lucky to even use 3g..now..on EC01..its stable and will actually work just enough to load pages..
The ED01 radio is rumored to be the same as EC01...but ED01 it currently only available via OTA it seems...no separate flashable modem.bin yet...some say its better, but hearing more posts that say they are getting worse reception..especially 3g dropping out..but there could also be a network problem on Verizon's side..
EC01
Just didn't feel like going through the hassle of putting down ED01. Plus I wanted to see what bugs ED01 had, and I'm kinda glad I waited. No problems with EC01 for me.
EC01 and I get good signal and battery life. Battery can stay at same % over a good nights sleep if in a good service area. GPS works good when the GPS trick is used. Otherwise its a <30 second fiasco.
Just postulating a theory here, but I feel like I've noticed a pattern with the battery life I see on EF02.
Day 1: installed AAi3 over SRF1.2, kept ec05 modem. Horrible battery (dropping 15% per hour with very light use)
Day 2: wiped everything, flashed aai3. Still same bat life with ec05. Odined ef02/ got ef10 ota. Battery life improvement but hard to quantify.
Day 3: put phone on charger on way to work, was at 99% for most of the drive (35 min). Kept phone in pocket all day, moderate use with some 4g (no wifi). Did not have to plug phone in until day 4 at about 1pm (28 hrs battery life).
Day 5 and 6: left phone off charger on way to work, phone dropped to 40% or so after about 12 hours, moderate use both days.
Day 7: charged on way to work, battery at 65% when I left work after heavy use with 4g on all day.
WhI at I think is happening is that samsung tweaked the way the epic charges the battery. On ec05 (and all previous builds) when I charged during my commute I would get a battery full notification within a minute or two. On ef02 (or at least aai3), I don't get a notification for 20 minutes at least, and sometimes not at all. Also I notice that when I wake up in the morning if I do anything my phone drops to 99% and keeps charging. Without me pulling it off the charger.
Anyone else noticed this behavior? The fact that charging the battery with the phone off is messed up on ef02 makes me feel like I'm right as well.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I've definitely noticed that it takes awhile to get the battery full indicator. I think you may be on to something. There are times when my battery stays at 100% for an hour or 2. Other times it drops to 99% right away. In any case i'm glad they fixed it because i couldn't even get my phone to charge past 96% before.
My phone has always done this.

Yeah I've noticed this also. They definately did something with the kernel or the way it charges cause I've noticed since ive been on ef02 my phone charges to 100 % where before It would never get above 96 or 97 %. I wonder if they took some ideas from the netarchy kernels people here were working on?
You've thought this through so much that your convincing yourself
I have extremely consistant and terrible battery life on the EF02 roms. Cannot for the life of me figure out why. A friend of mine has an EPIC on the same Rom, we are both running aai3 with ef02 modems, both work at the same place so we spend a great deal of time in the same building. He gets a day and a half sometimes 2 days (and he hasn't callibrated). I will get maybe a half a day if I'm lucky and I have callibrated... no idea why this is. I can go back to ec05 and get a day or more out of it no problem which seems about on par with anyone else. I am running no widgets and this is extremely moderate use, pretty much only texting throughout the day.
only difference is the callibration. I'm almost wondering if I need to odin back to ec05 and recallibrate and try to flash ef02 again. That's the only thing I can think of that is different between our setups.

Are you on ef02 modem or ef10? Have you tried ee03 modem? You are describing exactly the same battery problem I had when I flashed aai3 without odining the new modem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm on the ef02 modem. I tried ef10 also with the same results, I was getting a pretty poor signal though on there so I went back to ef02.
I seen noobnl was using ef10 with good life, and most people are using ef02. That's what my buddy is using also. I don't get it.
Did you flash from cwm over a froyo rom, or did you odin to ef02 first? Just wondering, because I just wiped 3x over srf 1.2 instead of going the 'proper' odin route. Other than my modem hiccup, its worked for me.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I odined the files from Noobnl's thread at first and was getting the bad battery life. When my buddy odined with the great battery life, he used the ef02plus.tar. So I tried odining again with ef02plus.tar, but not dice, still have crappy battery life.
Try to odin back to ec05 and flash aai3 over from cwm... Worked for me. Just remember to odin the new modem if you want it

Did you ever find an answer to this? I tried the stock/deodexed EF02 ROM for a day on the EF10 modem and a day on the EF02 modem. Battery life on either was terrible due to the deep sleep problem.
aai3 is anonymous rom version 3
So I tried odining ec05. Recalibrated.
Flashed just aai3. I pulled my phone off the charger at 8. 12 now. Its been 4 hours and I'm at 50%. Looks like it didn't work. Poooop.

What I've figured so far. If I prevent the modem from being used while the screen is turned off then I get good battery life. (I use a profile on Tasker to turn off the 2g/3g modem, when the screen is off) If I don't then it dies in 4hours regardless of what I do. I'm on srf1.2 with ec05 modem.
The modems leaked with the gb roms always crashed my phone once during the day. Roms where fast but bad battery life.
So I'm thinking that the modem kills the battery as it's being used and it seems to use more battery as the signal gets weaker. I have no data to support this, just my personal conclusions. (actually I don't know how I would prove this as I don't know which program would allow me to collect the proper data)
One final thing, I noticed that after I flashed the gb builds my voice calls have started to fail after a few seconds in the call because I lost signal. This has progressively gotten worse as time has gone by. I thought flashing the ec05 modem with srf 1.2 might help fix things but it's still happening.
I get awful battery life with any ec05 rom, and amazing on ef02 (aai3 is all I used). Others have reported the opposite. The modem reboots are worth the amazing battery life to me, the broken gps isn't

First I'll start off by saying tonight was a really terrible night for me so if this comes off as venting so be it lol.
Samsung, you're getting there that's for sure. Scrolling, screen off/on is buttery smooth and things seem to be working better than I had expected.
With that being said, there is still work that needs to be done. It may just be my location, but with the EG22 modem I feel like I've been roaming more than usual. I flashed back to the EC05 modem just to see and it confirmed my suspicion: either my phone or my area just doesn't like the new modem very much.
Another key component is battery life, it's been pretty sub-par for me. At work I have terrible reception (no bars, even roaming) so I put the phone on airplane mode and the battery is still dropping pretty consistently, much faster than on any of the other leaks or Froyo. Must be a rogue process(es) eating it up, but I can't be sure unless I do some digging which I don't really feel like doing.
All in all it's definitely coming along nicely, but by no means is it phenomenal. But for the first time since DI18, I can honestly say that I feel Sammy is doing some stuff right. Keep it up, don't let us users down

My impressions of the modem/rom is they are faking things a little bit on the signal meter as I know the signal isn't that strong in those areas. And it's not like a software update just gives better signal.
I agree that it seems like I'm roaming more on EG22, but the modem doesn't seem to have any effect. For example, I ran the stock EG22 build for a while and noticed the roaming issue and weaker WiFi reception. Reverting to the the EC05 modem didn't seem to help these issues. One of the stores I work in has a WiFi router that I can access throughout the store on Froyo (EC05), but on GB (EF02/EG22), WiFi disconnects when I walk to the rear of the store. Doesn't seem to matter which modem I'm using at the time. I even flashed back to Froyo yesterday but left the EG22 modem installed. GPS, 3G, and WiFi were flawless all day everywhere I went. So it seems that there must me some code/instructions in the build itself that are more relevant than the modem firmware.
Another interesting tidbit is that there basically is no difference in EC05 and EG22 modems. Randy did a binary differencing to generate a patch between EC05 and EG22 and the patch file is 142 bytes, which is probably about enough to change the version name.
I have noticed since the first GB leak that the WiFi reception is horrible now compared to a stock Epic with FroYo.

Yes, it makes me wonder if they might have the power to the radios dialed back a bit intentionally to help them diagnose something possibly?
I have noticed the wifi bars being low, but it isn't effecting the speed at all. I consistently get 1.5mbps down/600kbps up when over 3g, and have seen 9mbps on 4g. Call quality seems good as well. As for battery drain? It might be a bit faster than I'm used too, but then again, I'm coming from SRF 1.2. If there are any issues with the TWLauncher, I don't notice them because I'm a LauncherPro user. Issues with the browser? I use Dolphin, so if there are any, again, I don't know. Overall though, this ROM is stable enough for daily use.
