[Q] Charging TAB from a PC USB or USB Hub - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I setup a self-powered USB2.0 hub which has a 2.5AMP power adapter. I used a dual male (split) to single female USB cable and plugged the TAB USB cable into that.
This same dual cable & hub works fine to power an external USB hard-drive which won't work with just a single cable for power. I would think with 2+ AMPS it should charge the TAB "normally" (with no "x" on the battery indicator) but it does not, the "x" remains. All other devices have been removed from the hub.
Anyone else been able to get a normal charge off a PC or USB hub with a split cable? It's such a pain to have to put the TAB on the wall charger then switch it back to the PC.

when the screen is off the device charges, despite what the battery display says.

Correction, it trickle charges. Very slowly.

I understand that but I was under the obviously incorrect impression that if you used a double male USB to single female USB cable you would get a normal charge since there is more power available. Is the charge rate dependent on the TAB seeing power on a specific pin of the cable telling it that a charger is connected and not a cable to the PC? I'm connected to a self-powered hub with a big 2.5amp power supply and nothing else connected to it.

CHarging your t9193 through a USB hub?

Who here uses a USB hub to charge their t9193? I tried this on a Belkin USB hub without success (light indicator doesn't turn on). Is there a speciic way to make it charge through a USB hub or is mine just not compatible?
Does your HD2 charge from a PC USB port properly? A lot of times, USB hubs will need a 12v DC power source to create the 5v power required for USB devices. (Wall wart to the mini circular plug end found on laptops, etc) If your hub doesn't have that input, I'd find one that does. I bet that's your issue.
On a good powered usb hub maybe, but it will still
be less power than the wall charger and will not charge your battery as well.

My USB hub is powered by an AC adapter to the wall. I'm thinking it may be the voltage that doesn't work w/ the hd2 then..
So my USB Hub says
input 100 - 240V~0.8A 47-63Hz
output 5V 2.6A
That is probably spread over all the ports on the hub.
What else is plugged into the hub? Un-plug them and try to charge. Many hubs will say that and not come with the extra power supply. It is extra. Does yours have the power supply?
Yes, it has a physical power supply and when I tried it, nothing else was plugged in except the power supply to wall.

Can you use a USB wall plug into the TF cord?

I have a universal cell phone usb plug that goes into a 110V plug with an USB end...can I use the TF wire to this plug or do I need to use the TF wall plug?

That will be similar to loading by PC's USB ... loading times will be very long, because the TF's loading plug has much more power.

USB charging

I've noticed when I have my tablet plugged into my computer via USB it doesn't appear to be charging. The battery icon is showing a red lightning bolt. This is different than when I have my tab plugged into a wall socket.
Working as intended or..?
Your PC USB port can't supply enough juice (500ma max) compare to your wall socket (>2000ma) to charge while power the tab. Turn the tab off and your will get some charge off the USB port.

That adapter does not convert the power, as stated by foxbat, usb from pc won't deliver enough power.
can use this cable... Y TYPE USB CABLE A MALE to A FEMALE CONNECTOR 2 TO 1. enough power now? y can find it on bay...

It's been charging my tab for about a month now with no problems at all, but I'm not here to argue, if you feel that you know more than I do. I've charged the tablet using that adapter from my laptop, PC, and Energizer XP4001 Power Pack.
You might also search the forums, as I'm not the only one to recommend and use this item.

Have also use this USB charger Adapter Cable For Samsung GALAXY Tab p1000. Works great.
currently having thea similiar, but not same problem; bought this cable of of amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EAEQR4 and while icon indicates its charging, % is not going up at all, mayb 1% per hour or so... am ready to return it, but want to know if anyone else is experiencing similiar problems with a longer cable?
thanks

Ahh thanks! Was wondering why it wouldn't charge via my USB port.
(In fact using my Samsung Focus USB adapter for the outlet doesn't seem to work either... I need to use only the Samsung Tab USB adapter)

The focus charger is rated only about 700ma (same exact one as Captivate/SGS), marginablly better than PC USB. GT 10.1 has a rather large battery and hence it requires much larger charge current. You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?

Is that through the orginal AC adapter or through PC USB?
Turning off the tablet and charging it via USB works, but it takes forever!

And you are not the only one who is waiting twice as long before his tab is fully charged. Then we can open a topic "Why does it take so long before my tab is charged?" As foxbat stated: You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?
So if I say your adapter doesn't work its just as accurate as your answer it does work.

Hey, I'm not here to argue with you. I'm just an idiot.
Go about your business, and don't listen. I'm ok with that.
First of all, not all USB ports are equal.
On many modern PCs, the USB ports can deliver more than 500mA over USB if required. This is definitely true for pretty much all Macs since 2007, and quite a few mainboards from other manufacturers (see this article for some background).
Secondly, I've had one of these adaptors for quite a while now, and have used it regularly to charge my Galaxy Tab 7" which uses exactly the same power supply and cables as the GT 10.1. I can categorically state that when using this adaptor, it the GT7 does charge from a Macbook Air and a 5000mAh external battery that has a 1A output USB port labelled for an iPad.
Whilst it might not be as quick as the wall charger, it is definitely much faster than attempting to charge the GT7 from the same devices without the adaptor, even if the device is in use.
I've not formally tried to charge my GT10.1 with it yet, but I did check to see if the "not-charging" indicator went away (which it did), so I rather presume it will work much like the GT7.
Regards,
Dave

You don't need to embarrass yourself by saying you're an idiot, It's very childish and the second time you mention I'm supposed to be smarter then you. I'm sorry you take this so personally.
i just use the supplied cable and it charges via usb on my computer. it shows not charging, but it basically trickle charges when the tab is both on and off

What's the differences between OTG cable and the one that comes with the Nexus 7?

Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
An OTG cable is not for charging/connecting your device to a computer. Instead of usb micro to a male usb, it's micro to female usb, so you can plug in peripherals and flash drives etc. to your device.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
When a normal USB is plugged in, the Nexus is in "slave" mode. Receives instructions.
When an OTG cable is plugged it allows it to be in "master" mode. Can give instructions.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Stop... MUFFIN TIME!!!
There are basically 3 types of cables you can plug into the USB port of a Nexus 7:
1. A normal USB-to-microUSB cable, plugged into a computer or a USB charger. Either way it charges, and if it is hooked to a computer the N7 is in Client Mode and you can transfer files as well.
2. High-current chargers (like the one that comes with the Nexus 7). The data lines on these are shorted together; this tells the Nexus to accept higher current on the power lines for faster charging.
3. OTG cables have the normal 4 wires on the USB end - two for power, two for data - but on the microUSB end there is a fifth connection called USBID. Normally (as when using a normal 4-wire USB cable) the USBID pin is floating, i.e. not hooked to anything. On an OTG cable, the USBID pin is connected to the ground wire. This tells the N7 that an OTG device is plugged in, which causes it to do two things: it reverses the current on the power lines - because it needs to power whatever you have plugged into the OTG cable, like a USB card reader or keyboard - and it switches the USB interface from Client Mode (which it uses when it is plugged into a computer, because in that instance the N7 is a peripheral device) to Host Mode (because in that instance the OTG device is the peripheral and the N7 is the 'computer').
There is one other option for charging: the pogo pins on the side. (The 4 pins are 5V, stereo left, stereo right, and ground.) Providing power to the pogo pins (as when it is put in a dock) tells the N7 to accept high current on the pogo pins. Momentarily connecting 5V to the right stereo channel tells the N7 that external speakers are connected and it starts driving audio out the two center pogo pins. When this is happening the charging takes place through the dock, the USB connector can be used with a data cable or an OTG device, but no charging takes place through USB when the dock is connected. (An OTG device is still powered by the N7, but current never goes the other way.)

Dont forget a "y cable", which can charge and preform host mode (otg) at the same time, only at a slower charging rate. This is providing you are using a kernel that supports this function. "Otg+host mode charging"

If your connect both your pogo cable and your mico usb cable to your pc they won't charge at the same time. Drivers at the kernel level detect that both are connected to the tablet and only let one charge to prevent power draw overload. In this case it would charge from the pogo charger as it can recognize that the pogo charger is delivering a safe amount of power while simultaneously cutting down on charging time. You can however connect your pogo charger and have the tablet charge while the micro usb cable is connected to transfer files to and from your tablet, use adb etc. Let me know if you still have questions.

I would double check that comment. I have a pogo plug and OTG cable with Ethernet adapter or SD card reader attached. The icon that indicates the device is charging shows BUT it is not actually charging. I confirmed this under both Android 4.3.x and 4.2.2

Very interesting, the point I mentioned above is as least theoretically what is supposed to happen when plugging on both charging sources. Just to clarify your device doesn't charge at all when you have the pgoo plug and OTG cable with Ethernet adapter or SD card reader attached?

In theory yes but Google didn't include it in the Android rom. A developer for the old Nexus 7 did add the capability but never for the Nexus 10. I doubt very much that the next version of the Nexus 10 will include a pogo plug connection.
