Update Checks - What does it look for - Acer Iconia A500

Hey Guys,
Quick question, when the updater checks for an update, has anyone checked that app to see where it goes out and checks, and what data it sends out.. I am guessing to an Acer distro site and it checks something in build.prop. But does anyone have any full details?

[Q] PITA update notice- Can we make it go away?

3G Xoom, rooted, running 3.1, custom kernel, theme, etc. I like it the way it is and don't see any benefit to updating to 3.2. I'm constantly being prompted to install 3.2, and it's getting annoying.
Can I change the build prop file or something to stop the reminders?
Thanks, all.
I haven't tried it on the xoom, but can you freeze the updater with titanium backup?
I'm thinking just an edit to the build.prop file will do it, but I don't know what to edit.
Perhaps someone could copy theirs in text format?...
I will be looking for this tomorrow myself. If I figure it out I will let you know. Should be easy, just have to isolate the correct line in build.prop
I'm planning on moving to the 3.2 Tiamat ROM, but until I make that jump, I would LOVE to never see that notification again!
Update
Sure you don't have the update.zip file on your zoom. Mine was doing the same thing and I found that in the root directory. I deleted it and all is well now.
I haven't looked at exactly how it worked on the Xoom so maybe what I'm saying doesn't make any sense (if so, maybe a kernel dev might correct me), but if you were to know the hostname used when looking for available updates, you could edit /etc/hosts to point that update server to 127.0.0.1, so your tablet won't be able to contact it?
That is how we intercept some outbound connection to WD's servers on the WDTV homebrew firmware project I'm involved with, so that technique might work under Android, provided your device is rooted.

Market upgrade

Anyone know what Google Market does when you update your app?
Does it delete what's on the phone first or just install the app? i.e. will it wipe-out any user changed database data? Assume the update IS NOT to the database, just a simple text change.
TIA,
Roots

Hi,
The Market downloads the updated application and installs it over your existing one. It doesn't delete your user data as well.
Thank you, I wasn't 100% sure. I tested an update by sending friend the new apk and they installed it. All user data stayed intact; same as the market.
Thank you again!

[Q] Blocking amazon updates

I recently decided to block to next update just in case amazon breaks my root again. I went about trying to usual, freezing the process (but I couldnt find the service with app quarantine) to redirecting the server to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file (which I never got working either, it never blocked amazonaws.com)
What I ended up doing was blocking amazonaws.com in my router, and now everytime my fire powers up I get a dialog saying "the Wi-Fi network you are connecting to requires you to sign in before accessing the internet. Would you like to sign in" and the wifi signal icon always has an X on it now.
Question is, is this a common phenomena when blocking the server?
Do any of the other methods not pop up this dialog box?
that worked for me:
kf was and is registered
removed /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip -> update downloaded but did not install -> was automatically deleted from cache folder after failed attempt to install
no guarantee !!!
Is the update installed from cache our the kindleupdate folder? I have some other ideas on blocking, but I am notsure on this part.

I used app quarantine, and locked OTASilentInstall. I would provide a link, but I can't yet.
Also added:
127.0.0.1 s3.amazonaws.com
Hoping it stops the updates.
this will not work ! - allready tested and confimed
the only working and confirmed method is to deregister !
i did not deregister, watched the download ... see above
for me my method worked and i see it as confirmed for me.
btw. use the search function - there is a quite big thread about this !
So even after actually locking down the OTA app it will still update?
for shure !

Software Update Popup

Hi!
I am on i9505XXUBMGA and i get the Software update MEssage every few minutes... i dont want to update because i already rooted but still have stock rom.
When i update i will not be able to root again right? I dont know what actual Firmware is but i think today the sent out a new FW.
Anyone knows how to block or remove this annoying Software Update Popup?
I Searched the web an found a few things like Rename FWUpdate.apk and some other files with Root explorer. I did this .. i rebootet but popup still appears!
I also looked in Cache folder.. i dont have any Firmware.zip there to delete.
Anyone has a clue?
I also cant uncheck Software update in Device Info ... there i only have one Button "Systemupdate" when i klick it it tells my my system is actually on latest build and i can tick CHECK NOW. But no checkboxes for disable Software update or somewhat.
Maybe someone can help me getting rid of this annoying popup

Maybe its possible to freeze the app with titanium backup...or delete..
Not sure

Facebook app suddenly built-in after recent update

Hey guys. I recently updated my phone, and to my surprise, Facebook was installed. I remember uninstalling it before applying the update. When I go into settings and check the version, it says "version stub". What does that mean? Also, "Uninstall" is no longer an option. Now, I can only "disable/enable" or "force stop" it. Has anyone else seen this?
Thanks for the reponses.

Only thing I could find was someone on Reddit asking about the same thing.
It's most likely a carrier push (probably Samsung including it in the update and carrier leaving it in, like when they include other bloatware when they make the OS).
You should be able to get rid of it with Root, if you don't use FB, it's probably going to make more sense to just delete any shortcuts and not touch it than to root though.
Yeah theyre system apps.
you can delete or freeze it if your rooted, not sure about a unrooted method tho.
There are actually 3 apks for FB for some reason
/system/app/Facebook_stub/
/system/app/FBAppManager_NS/
/system/priv-app/FBInstaller_NS/
