Most of us with ATT phones pretty thrilled by the recent turn of events. But the journey is just beginning, and there is a lot of work ahead. As much as I'm sure we all want to throw a few bucks to the ATT/Moto employee who leaked, it's probably better for their job security that we can't
It's my opinion that the amount of work that's been done so far pales compared to what's ahead. Many exciting things are possible, but most will take days, weeks or months of work. A few useful projects I can think of include:
Porting AOSP trees (CM7?) for Atrix
Debug kernels with USB or 3.5mm serial uart
Newer (.36? .38?) kernels with various tweaks
Overclock kernels or overclock modules that work safely
A rebased webtop: Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04, or ... Gentoo?
An AOSP-based ROM that leaves all webtop functionality intact.
(I'm saving my donation money for the last one, +extra$ if the front camera is v4l accessible from webtop. PM Sogarth or myself, if interested in webtop-related dev)
Those are just a few off the top of my head... sky's the limit! Lots of nifty hacks with HDMI/Webtop/Lapdock are possible... Pick your pet project, start a thread, collect names and guaranteed minimum donations, keep a google spreadsheet, do what it takes. Or if you're a dev, float your ideas...
I'd really like to encourage collective development. In many cases projects are solo efforts, but they don't have to be. I don't do it for the money and collaboration is more fun for me than competition. It makes me sad when code is not public and other people can't extend or port a work. But competition for bounties can discourage this openness, and I think that's a pity. I feel best dev work comes from a love of creativity, pushing limits by making useful things that were never possible before ...not for money or celebrity.
So I think, if a project was a cooperative work, perhaps developers could agree and shoot a mail to the 'bounty' coordinator indicating who is doing what work, so that if it succeeds, such bounties could be shared between a team.
And last but not least... Unless a dev needs custom hardware or a phone...
I encourage you to ONLY donate once a project is complete!!
I've got to take 3 weeks off to take care of personal things, but am hopeful to see what the state of AT&T Atrix is like on XDA when I get back =)
PS. Let me clarify: I am not starting any bounties! Please do not PM with how much you would pay for x.y.z. Please do PM if you want to dig deep into webtop internals. As I am interested in working on Atrix still, there could be a conflict of interest if I organized anything. Please, if you believe in a project, find like-minded people and organize a bounty thread yourselves!
I think this is a great idea!

actually the MIUI team states that they will support most of the devices CM support, if CM doesnt support a device the MIUI team wouldnt even touch that with a pole
it might be a better idea donating a few machines + a few bucks directly to CM and get the ball rolling there instead of "porting"
I think we need a bounty for someone who can unlock the bootloader for international versions

The unsung hero is the unknown source who gave us a signed unlockable BL. Unless you can find a leak from a carrier or Moto connection, who has similarly signed unlockable BL for international versions, good luck. As far as I know no one has come close to unlocking the Atrix boot signature chain. It may be possible, but it probably isn't, and it hardly seems like anyone is trying. I'd really like to clarify we didn't do anything besides notice this was possible, and then package things up after we got a lucky leak. It was probably coming anyway, but someone out there wanted to help us early =)
That said, a bounty for kexec working on international Atrix is not a bad idea.
Would be great if everything will work fine expecially Ubuntu.
I never needed it but I think now it is about time!
anyone here a dev / got connection with any devs in CM ?

That's because MIUI is a rip of CM7 with crappy "customizations."
They don't touch non-CM7 phones because they can't; they don't have the skill to build the full ROM themselves.

Change I36172fd3: vibrant: Temporarily remove from CM manifest
vibrant: Temporarily remove from CM manifest
Reasons:
1. It doesn't compile - this can be fixed, though
2. It doesn't work... - currently the kernel inside the repo doesn't work plus the build system is not set up to flash the kernel
3. The Vibrant repo is about 2mths old
4. The Vibrant repo contains proprietary. On my fork, I have changed everything over to use extract-files, removed proprietary from all commits using filter-branch
We can refork my repo for the Vibrant, but at the same time - it still isn't ready, so mostly having it on the CM repos for 6.1 RC's this weekend is pretty pointless considering where we are in getting CM6 for the Vibrant
My manifest (git://github.com/wesgarner/android.git) is setup for the current Galaxy S repos (aka my Vibrant repo and noobnl's Epic repo), but this is still such a WIP that keeping it on CM repos really just confuses people about the current status and makes it seem like it's ready when it isn't

i'm fine with that. bionix is honestly better than cm was on my g1, and those cm guys are a bunch of assholes. if (mostly) one guy can build a rom from scratch, i don't understand how a whole team can't figure it out.
You cant expect one guy to make a rom for all android devices. If it doesnt work. O well. I mean there are other roms out there for those wanting to mess with there phones. Bionix is one. And many more to come to the vibrants way. You ppl keep asking these devs who have other lives outside xda. And then get pissed when theres no special rom for ur phone. C'mon now.

the donations were made to wes/scepterr... that has nothing to do with CM. true they are members of the CM team, but all they ever said was that they had plans to port CM6... that doesn't mean they have to, and anyone who decided to donate should have realized that a PLAN does not equal a promise.
if it fails, well crap. if they come back to it later and it works, hooray! until then, your donations belong to whoever you donated to. because that's how donations work.

Wow.... Are you serious? d
First you're comparing your Vibrant to a G1, of course it will be better! Even with a stock Vibrant.
Second, the CM guys or any dev for this matter, who gives their free time to make ROMs and MODs for peasants like you and I who cant do it ourselves, are assholes?! How?!
Third, yes it only takes one talented dev to build a ROM from scratch, but without the SOURCE they have no base to work on. It really isnt easy to make a ROM from scratch, and as far as I know only a few devs have successfully done so. Most of them base it on another dev's work or samsung itself...

Haha.... You think that the bionix ROM came from scratch??? He took eugenes base from the Ftwiz ROM. He even says it in the credits. Not trying to sell the ROM or development short, because it is a great ROM.
All the devs that are tied to the vibrant are trying to reverse engineer the code to get the 2.2 source which samsung has not released. Building 2.2 with out the source code is like building a sky scrapper from the top to the bottom, everything will crash. Where as 2.1 with source is building from ground up, you start from a solid foundation, then work your way up...
Wes also stated to anyone who wanted there money back, they can email him for a refund.

Very true!
after reading their various tweets regarding them passing the buck on vibrant development, yes, they're assholes. it was clearly a joke to them because they know it's a huge hassle, so they should have just said it was probably never going to happen. i'm very grateful for the handful of devs that have actually stepped up and made this phone into what it should have been out of the box. it was clear that the cm team never cared in the first place.
Thanks for all the devs helping us with all the 2.3.4 rom based off the official rom. It runs well. However, I am waiting for to dev who can either bring cm7 or mini to our rom. Right now, there is just too much moto blur bloat on the official rom.

I totally agree we shouldn't take the devs for granted (especially those of us just savvy enough to use the roms, but not enough to help make 'em at all).
However, last year Android was at like 16% market share, and CM could support basically every unlocked phone all the way back to the G1. This year Android market share is at almost 40% with phone dropping at an accelerating rate. I'm sure it helps them decide which phones to support to know where there is interest.
I hope it doesn't hurt anyone at CM's feelings for me to say that I love CM, and have missed it ever since I left my G1 for the Atrix, and I too will be holding off on flashing roms for now in hopes that CM will add us to the supported device list.

I would like to see this too, assuming such confirmation even exists...I've been watching aliasxerog's twitter periodically, as it seemed he and a team of a few other guys were given the unlocked Atrix to work on? As recently as like last week or something, he had made comments about working on a kernel.
However recently it seems he has been looking for a DX2...nothing like ditching work on one phone partway through! Hopefully this isn't really the case lol, and he is still at work on CM7 or something!
if you search for CM7 on the Atrix foruns you'll see a post with status updates on the port. No "he said she said".

i definite don't take devs for granted. While I don't have the the technical chops to port myself, I donated to several projects .
While the current official rom works very well, I believe atrix can be even better without all the extra bloat . I think we have good chance to see miui official support for our phone because the phone is being heavily advertised by the china cellular providers.

Come on guys, if you don't pro-actively "wait for it", things will be much easier for you
It will take time for the first build to emerge, and even more times before all the bugs get fixed. Just subscribe to aliaxesrog twitter and wait for your day.
To be clear, you don't have to be a existing CM7 Dev to start print CM7, it's open source.
When a developer gets a port working for a specific device, if they can merge the unique code for that device back into CM7 mainline, it becomes an officially supported device and that developer becomes a recognized maintainer.
We have a few people working on CM7, AliasXerog, SamCripp and I'm reaching out to others, but as no Moto devices have been as unlocked as the Atrix since the OG Droid people are starting from scratch.

The Cyanogen devs have said, repeatedly, that what devices they develop CyanogenMod for is dependent on what devices they personally have or have access to. That being said, there is a thread on the Unofficial Ports section of their forum, but it's almost exclusively repetitions of "the bootloader is unlocked, can we get a port now please?"
For the more impatient members of the angry mob, it's worth remembering that the bootloader hasn't been unlocked for all that long.

Another alternative would be a web-top, or web only desktop. But markets have not responded to web-only environments. The desktop is a high-productivity mode, not a media consumption mode or a browsing mode. That’s why we’ve brought the full power of a native desktop to this solution.

The other problem is that while Canonical is pushing the build to hardware manufacturers and mobile carriers, it has no plans to release it to the general public for independent development. This means that you won’t see a CyanogenMod ROM with this functionality built into it. While Ubuntu is open source, Canonical plans to control the release of this version. It’s possible that, given the ingenuity of Android users, one day there will be a leaked build, but such a thing wouldn’t be endorsed by the company.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing in regards to cm webtop. I also put in a request for source as I'm seriously debating picking up an Atrix JUST for this. This looks like a great platform to develop for.

Has anyone seen the VIDEO yet??
Theyes DID use an Atrix2 as a test mule. And as you can see, it works PERFECTLY. Although they didn't launch any desktop apps (Chromium, GiMP, Libre Office are the ones I'm really on edge for) you can see the deep integration-- to the point where I'm almost sure that they worked in secret and sold a bastardized version of Ubuntu 9 to Motorola. I'd always thought that it was an internal project of Moto's to make webtop… Since Google bought the cow, Canonical seems to be letting the cat outta the back and trying to sell it to the phone industry at large now. However I'd also say two things…
Make an open source version that us gear-heads can sink our teeth into. If they want to create a "fan base" that can get behind their effort, they'd owe it to themselves to jump over here onto XDAdevs and let folks like SamCripp, the Atrix Dev Team, and the CM devs help out. Get folks like me who are crazy enough to use their LAPDOCK as their DAILY WORK COMPUTER (using it RIGHT NOW and I have no webtop even since I'm using CM7 at the moment. I've used nothing but Linux at home for years, so someone like me can shake down their efforts and give them a real-world test.

Saranhai is part of the team that brings a lot of ROM's to this device. He is probably a little frustrated that it seems like is never good enough, or fast enough for people. Your question may have been honest and purely innocent, but with the way things have been around here lately his reaction is somewhat understandable.
Several devs are hard at work on sense 4 kernels and the camera. When they have a usable fix, it will be released. If you want to add to their resolve you could always donate

I'm patiently waiting too. And so you know, I'm posting this in a good mood, not frustrated or being smart. But from what I understand is its basically at a standstill until devs can get the necassary kernel to get the camera working. It's not that they are being slow..they simply don't have what's needed to accomplish it. And I may be entirely wrong..that's just what I have been thinking.

Okay. I understand, not saying anybody is being slow. I just wanted to know what the issue was. It's crazy that Sense seems to be the most troublesome UI.

Take it at face value MF. It's my fault that you put your own thoughts into a simple question? Seriously, it's all too common on XDA for people to needlessly attack others on the basis that people are too sensitive.
See the answer that JJ gave? That's all that we needed. I wanted to know the issues the devs were facing? If anything I was concerned, because I've never seen something give this kind of trouble on this phone. We all appreciate the works that devs do. We all act like kids in a candy store for the work that devs do.
Team Inferno member ...Awesome... is releasing a One S port. Yes, One S. Hope that fits your needs (besides camera )

if you did any searching youd know it all depends on when HTC releases the 3.0 kernel and we can get some kernel devs to port it to our devices..
did you really need a thread to ask for an ETA on something thats not even meant for our phone? cmon son lol
I too am impatiently waiting for a upgrade

I think it got a little hot outside to the point it heated everything, even in the internet.... xD
The issue is that there's no HTC official kernel source for any "sister" devices - DHD/DS, and they didn't get the HTC ICS update either. Without the kernel source, devs have to use kernel source from other, less compatible devices to compile the kernel, and the binary drivers from those devices don't match the HW. There are no skilled enough and/or willing enough devs to dig in the kernel code and rewrite the API towards the drivers to match the older, working drivers from Gingerbread (that's what was done back in Gingerbread release time), mostly because it's a huge work that brings almost no benefits - the official code is likely to be better anyway, and its release will most likely be closer to this point in time than the shortest time required for "enthusiast" work.

I think in layman terms, that means if someone attempted to rewrite source code to match the h/w in the Glacier, by the time they would finish, better & more compatible code would be here anyway. So its best, at this point, to just wait patiently?

Punit Soni needs to know that there is a lot of people intested in the kernel source of their incomplete work on ICS.
Let's ask him for that https://plus.google.com/111499908439497508351
I think it could help us to get an working ICS =)
Thank you Guys!
We were lucky to get anything other than a standard textbook reply from Motorola. Motorola will never release source as it has a lot of proprietary code and drivers to which they might no longer have rights to. Also, I can't imagine them releasing it only to be told that unpaid enthusiasts were able to do what their employees couldn't.

I don't think Punit Soni is the right guy for that.

But if we get only the GPL sources, we could use the proprietary libraries in the leak. If the proprietary libraries are ok, then we could fix the problems with the leak's kernel (like battery drain, deep sleep).
In fact, looks like they have reasons to not release the GPL sources... But doesn't hurt to ask Punit Soni about it...

He isnt the vice president of moto. He is the vice president of product management. For about a month straight the atrix and photon community asked him over and over to do something to no avail. By all means, try again. But just saying, its been done before.
Well let's just add a layer of anger. I'm pretty bored of this crappy company not giving us what we need.
imho Punit is the guy that's responsible for the cancellation of ICS update. He was talking about bitter decisions before the announcement.
And as an employee of Google, he wont give anything that will give more life to Atrix.
If you want a phone with 4.x, sell your Atrix or work some overtime and buy another phone.

May I ask why are you still following Atrix threads and posting posts like this?! If you have or made decision to buy another phone, just buy it and leave others without your advises.

Thanks for the advice. But couldn't you tell me how to get 300€ to get a Nexus 4 ? I bought my Atrix 6 months ago and I waited something like 6 months to buy it.

make atrix users post comments for need of atrix ics or kernel in his g+:fingers-crossed:

Because I still use the Atrix, obviously. See how it does that nifty trick of saying what its sent with?
I'm not sitting here complaining about ICS for the Atrix. I use CM10 If you want ICS, get another phone. Very simple. Like me, I'm working overtime to buy another phone. But trying to spam a guy isn't going to get ICS on your phone.
And I should point out you are in the wrong place to tell someone they can't advise people abut phones.

This is not first time that you're giving that kind of advice. Someone is not willing to work overtime or just can't. Someone just like Atrix size and features, doesn't need anything better... So many reasons.
Actually you're wrong. I had Desire. HTC announced that will not be GB update. Community was so loud that HTC change its mind. If a lot of people request, Motorola must do something. The worst thing is to do what you did, buy another phone (doesn't matter which vendor) because that's exactly what vendors wish!

Buy Nexus. Problem solved. If you don't, don't expect updates. View them as miracles if they get pushed trough.
