Wifi problem on 3.1 - Acer Iconia A500

I've just stumbled upon an interesting problem.
My tablet couldn't connect on ANY wifi network unless I entered the IP manually (I have checked on my router an my phone using it as a wifi hotspot). DHCP just didn't work and the tablet was stuck at "obtaining IP adress". The odd thing is that even the bars that show the network strength went from 5 full bars to 1 bar.
It was odd since wifi was on and it worked fine until I charged my tablet. I didn't do anything in between and reset didn't help. What worked in the end was deleting the dhcpd-wlan0.lease under /data/misc/dhcp.
Could anyone point me to the problem or an error that caused this because I'm a little afraid that it wasn't just a one time thing and that it could happen again.
Edit: Oh yeah I almost forgot. My router was acting up (my PC that is connected via cable was losing internet connection). Could it be that it was the router that messed up dhcpd-wlan0.lease and broke my Iconia?

oh, that happen to me. I reset factory and all came back....
I hope that not a problem will happen again....
Maybe a clue.
I went to work with the tablet, connected to the internet who have a different IP 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1
Maybe that screw the files because my other tablet didn't move from home and didn't get the problem.

I'll write a script in Tasker to remove the data periodically if it happens again but I hope that it won't.
I don't like doing factory resets because that literally means a day of work fixing my tablet to my standards again.

i'm having the same issue... have a massive wifi network at work and the access point is 10 feet away and the signal jumps around and will not connect

Just delete the file I've listed and it will work if you're experiencing the same problem as me.

that did it!!!
Thanks

this happen to me too .factory reset for me .....hope never happen in future

my wifi stopped working after i updated to 3.1 but all i did was settings -- wireless and networks and removed my wireless settings and added again as new..and everything started working

permission issues on dhcp file...
Most probably the root cause is a permission issues on that particular file after upgrade... Should not happen anymore in the future.

I don't think that's the case. It happened to me again after I've installed Acer phone disabler. Again deleting the file worked but I was able to recreate it whenever I had an unclean shutdown of the tablet.
Permissions were ok. I've checked. Besides that wouldn't explain wifi working normally after update and then not working the next hour (I didn't even touch the tablet in the meantime).

same thing here. Nothing worked except a full wipe. I wonder where this is coming from?

I'm testing and it seems that the most probable cause is an unclean shutdown.
I was able to recreate it whenever I've used Acer phone disabler app.
Does anyone else use this app so that we can narrow it down?

guy it happen again please try a solution. how can i make a downgrade? where can i find the file to delete?what app i have to use to find it? astro is ok?

I've written everything in my post on page 1. The filename (dhcpd-wlan0.lease) and location (data/misc/dhcp/).

Yes but i can't find the ile with astro...uff reset again....

Use root explorer. I've also experienced the error so I'm moving to a new rom (was using the leaked 3.1 rom).

does anyone know if any of the other custom roms fixes this issue?
im using the leaked acer rom in stock form and used it to upgrade from my stock 3.0.1 rom (Australian version)

But i have to root the tablet before to use root explorer?
Does exist a program with no root access to that file?
edit ok i rooted my tab but i can't find the file to delete but maybe it create when wifi will fail .....i have just to wait thank's everybody for now...

[Q] Wifi IP-adress receiving fail

I was using Mattc's 1.8 for weeks and suddenly i got this weird wifi fail.
My phone contancly tries to connect to my network, and when it does, it fails on the point when he's obtaining the ip-adress. After that my phone will scan again for available network and i end up in the endless loop.
I found a similar thread on this
But on this thread they talk about flashing back to stock rom, wich I can't since i'm using dhe haRET bootloader.
Anyone else with this strange thing or maybe a solution?
Thanx
Pretty obvious suggestion, but have you tried deleting the access point and starting again? If yes, have you checked your wireless router to make sure you've not disallowed access for some reason?

Did all things u said allready. And the strange thing is, it worked wel 24 hours ago
was it working ok with the same build? cause I noticed after trying out different builds some use different mac addresses and I have to add them to my router.

[Q] Wifi Issue, wont connect.

ok before the update my phone never had any issues connecting but since i downloaded the official update that someone posted in the development forum it has stopped working, i have tried both Bionix 1.9 as well as Bionix Fusion 1.0 (currently using this one) neither has helped.
whats happening is the phone finds the wifi, connects to it, and then keeps like restarting or losing connection saying obtaining IP address. I have tried this from my home router as well as my work router neither of which work any longer.
I have also tried giving it a static ip address but then it just keeps losing and connecting (refreshing i guess).
If i try and go to the market or a website while the wifi is connected, refreshing doing whatever it doesnt work at all just shows could not load screens.
I have the same issue, with a stock (but rooted) JI6. The only resolution I have is rebooting the phone.

rebooting the phone for me doesnt do any good, i leave wifi on, reboot and then when its back on wifi still doesnt work. Is it possible to go back to pre JI6? if so have you tried that yet?
You could ODIN back to stock. At least you won't be having this problem and plus you could test to see if JI6 is the problem.
I HIGHLY recommend to do a nandroid backup before anything and save ur apps with titanium backup. :]
You need to rest your wi-fi router ie once it connect for the first time its fine afterwords. I have fixed four of my friends vibrants same way.

3.1 Update - Wifi Broken

Hi all,
Since my wife updated her a500 to 3.1 she is no longer able to connect to any wifi networks.
There's a few threads around talking about replacing the wpa_supplicant file, but this tab is NOT rooted, and is completely stock. It's only a couple of weeks old. I don't particularly want to root it unless I have to, because I don't have the time/cbf. I've tried rebooting everything, clearing cache, all the obvious things, but it just loops through the connection process.
Is there any way to fix it? I guess a factory reset is the next thing to try, but only want to do that if it's likely to work.
Thanks in advance.

Rooting is less work than a factory reset. And if you swap WPA_Supplicant files, you can connect to ad-hoc networks, like one broadcast by a smartphone. I did it myself last night in about 4 minutes.

Remove the connection from your device.
Reboot your wifi router.
Set up the connection in the A500 again.
Good Luck.

Pretty sure it could wireless tether before the update. I'll look at rooting I guess...have to do it to 2 devices though and support them long term...so not overly keen...had hoped acer would take care of it all.

I'm confused. If you're worried about someone running amok with root, just unroot once you've got it fixed. What's the support concern?

Hi I don't know whether will this help in your situation; I had similar problems when after 3.1 update, the wifi connection fails. I go to setting-networks-wifi-settings. next i will "forget network" the connection that fails, and then I add them manually in the "add wifi network".
after that the wifi is back in working condition for me. Hope this helps.

Got onto Acer today. They barely asked me any questions, and advised a factory reset, and they will contact me when a fix is available. I guess they are aware of the issue. They also advised that rooting won't void warranty unless it damages the hardware. So probably going to go that method.

This just happened to me today out of the blue sense day 1 ota of 3.1 and factory reset did fix the problem. Im very tech savay and did everything I could before doing a drastic last ditch effort of resetting and this seemed to be the only quick solution.

This happens with non-final 3.1 and it is a known glitch. Just update to final 3.1 and problem solved. Otherwise you just have to erase a file in the dhcp folder.
Best regards.

Yes, you can fix this by deleting a file, but no, it's not a problem with just non-final updates. I had not updated anythinh unofficial, and this happened to me. I got the offial OTA 3.1 update and have been fighting this issue ever since. Very annoying, basically requires everybody to root their device until this is fixed. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138905&page=7
I rooted my acer so I could replace the wpa_supplicant file to update it. then when I unrooted it, my wifi wont work either. It just says error and I tried that factory reset and it didnt help either. now I dont know wut to do
Hi guys! Im new here and I just wanted to share my experience with my Acer Iconia after updating to Honeycomb 3.1
After updating to Honeycomb, it did seem to run faster and better but after how many hours, i wasnt able to connect to any wifi network. That pissed me off... :l
I tried numerous ways to try and fix it, I even tried manually using static ip and reserving an ip address for my tablet and it worked, it did connect but there was no internet.
So I tried resetting my tablet by pressing the reset button beside the usb port. the first reset, no luck, still won't connect but on the second time i reset my device i was able to connect
I suggest before you do a factory reset on your device, try resetting your device first 2 times and make sure to forget the wifi networks as well and try reconnecting again.
I hope this helps! So far I've connected to three different wifi networks and experienced no problem at all.

Yeah, thanks for that.
Mine was fine for a while after 3.1 update and suddenly lost wi-fi.
The guy above is correct.
I deleted the wifi details (ie long click, forget).
Reset Once. Still broken.
Reset second time. Enter password.
Working.
Weird. (my tablet is unrooted, standard OTA 3.1 update).
delete this to fix
dhcpd-wlan0.lease

Good luck...

WiFi & android market

im having really weird problems accessing and downloading from android market. when i am using my phone network i dont have any issues at all, but whenever i try to access it using wifi all my downloads fail.
it's only the market i have a problem with, otherwise i can browse the net and download as normal using wifi.
any idea what the problem can be? remember, its specific ONLY to the market place
*apologies, this should be in the S2 thread
Once got the same problem on Galaxy S. It disappeared automagically after one day.
ok, i managed to get it working, but only by making my wifi connection open. if i have any encryption on my router i cant access the market.
judging by the lack of replies, i guess no-one has a clue?
try it on someone else's router
Happened to me all the time using the old market. I installed the newer version and the problem went away.
Also the encryption on your router should make no difference, this is transparent to the app.

router isnt the problem.
just noticed that my version of the market is 2.3.6, so looks like there's been quite a few updates that i have been missing out on, downloading now and ill let you know if it solves the problem

Known problem or defect device?

So I've been using my Kindle Fire for a couple of weeks now, and I've found a problem that's been hindering my use.
When I am (decently) far from my router, my Wifi on the Kindle Fire keeps dropping and then it reconnects. The connection is still at around 2 bars whenever it does it. I don't understand, because with my smaller phone (HTC Sensation 4G), my Wifi does not do this...
Is this a firmware issue (I am not rooted) or is it unique to my device? I have updated the firmware and everything...
Thanks.
I've been running into this exact problem (non-rooted KF). For the first few weeks, I had zero issues.
Now suddenly, I can't seem to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time.
Even standing literally next to the router produces the same results.
I use plenty of other wireless devices in the house and I've never ran into any of these problems.
I'm using a Netgear WNDR4500; not a cheap router by any means.
I did a little research the other day, this seems to be a somewhat well-documented problem. Doesn't seem like any solutions have been found yet, though. I noticed the problem only seems to happen when the Kindle has been on standby for a few days. A restart seems to stop all the disconnects, at least for a few days.
maybe cleaning up saved networks helps
to do this:
disable wifi
open /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf and delete everything exempt the first two lines:
Code:
ctrl_interface=tiwlan0
update_config=1
save the file (beware the permissions rw-rw----)
enable wifi
you start with a wifi configuration like out of the box

don't really know cause mine is rooted - you can try it with es file explorer or any other which reaches the file - if you can't safe it then you need root - but i don't think so cause it has write permissions to the user group
KF's WiFi does seem to be a bit wonky... I've had trouble associating with networks a few times, required a reboot/toggling WiFi on and off.
Does anybody have this problem with a custom rom? If not, it could be Amazon trying to do something funky with powersaving. On my dm1z, if I set my WiFi adapter to "max power saving mode", I see very similar behavior...
The wifi on the kindle is great....it probably has to do with interference in your network. Try changing the channel you use for your network.
So, I compared another kindle fire to mine and it did not have the problem...I guess I will be calling amazon for a new one.

There's no 2.4ghz network within about 1500 feet of my home (and I know what channel that network is on), so I really doubt that's the problem.
As I stated above, as soon as I restart the KF, the wifi works perfectly for a while. It's only happens after the KF has been on standby for about 4-5 days; that's when the connectivity issues start.
The only reason I'm here (over the amazon forums) is because people here actually know what they are talking about. Everyone over there has the generic "it's your network" response. I manage networks for a living, something is most definitely not working correctly on the KF. When the parents came over, I had them test their KF (I made sure it was on standby for at least a few days); I had no problem staying connected.
I have the same issue and I'm running CM7. I'm constantly having to disable and then re-enable wifi to jump start it. Phones never have this issue on my home network and this is the only network that my Kindle has ever connected to.

my wifi on my fire is stronger than on my infuse
Wifi strength isn't the issue for me, it's plenty strong.
The issue is that it cuts out in the middle of me using it, which leads to me turning wifi off and then back on.
Mine does this after it's been on standby for awhile, The wifi won't turn on and i have to do a reboot to get it working. had the problem with KF 6.2.1 And CyanogenMod7, seems to be the hardware.

only a possibillity:
do you use manual ip-settings on the kf ? - it don't seem to like that
and if you switch wifi off and on again instead of rebooting - does it work again ?
seems to be a common problem ...
I don't use manual ip settings.
Turning Wifi off and then back on works for me but it's kind of annoying.
I too have had this happen twice since I got my fire 12/23. There is no problem with anything else connected to the network. Turning the network on and off does not help nor does rebooting the kindle. I have run wifi analytics and it does not see my network. The only solution is to reboot the router. I have not rooted mine yet either.
If this is a known problem with the fire hardware I will need to contact CS. Hopefully I will not need to go to the hastle of returning it.
i have this problem too - very rare but have it also - reboot the router and everything is ok again - every other device connects flawlessly - seems like a problem of the router (linksys 160nl)
