Interesting battery consumption with wireless - Desire HD General

I thought I would share my recent findings with all of you as it appears battery consumption is a hot topic. First of all I've never had a probem with battery consumption on my DHD, I've always been happy and I'm still happy. This is just an observation.
In my house I have a good wifi signal everywhere except in my bedroom, when I'm lying in bed it can lose connection every now and then, this has not really been a problem until 2.3. It's as simple as this, if I leave wifi on with a fully charged battery next to my bed the next morning there is 10-15% battery left, if I turn wifi off then the next morning there will be 75-85% battery left.
If I'm at work with wifi on all day even though it's not connected to a wifi connection when I go home there is still at least 60% left. Clearly if you leave wifi on connected to a network and the signal drops out every now and then or if the signal is poor expect your battery to be exhausted in no time. Leaving wifi on is not the problem, well in my case it isn't, it all depends on the signal strength of what you connecting to.

Same here . and if you have a good wifi signal the battery life is much much way better than using 3g connection

This is normal behaviour, when wifi is on it will try to reconnect if it loses network, hence in your case it is continually reconnecting to the wifi and draining the battery, if this is a new issue with 2.3 it may be curable by flashing one of the older radios as it may be an issue with the new radio?

same probllem
i have the same problem with my DHD, i have stock rooted rom 2.3.3, and my bettery is draining at an alarming rate, cause it always trying to reconnect to wifi network. but the main prb is that wifi signal is strong, as my laptop has excellent signal, but my phone is strange, sometimes it has full signal, sometimes it drops and completely disconnects from wifi. as i move it arround a bit it reconnects. if i flash an older radio will it resolve this prb? and how do i flash an older radio?

You need to be Radio S-OFF to flash the radio, but if you didn't have the problem previously just try downgrading with one of the RUU's listed here
which will re-flash the older radio which should put you back to before the upgrade, a work round for now is to turn wi-fi off when not actually using it at least for now. BTW this problem doesn't appear to be present in the GB custom rom's so must be some tweak by HTC that has gone awry.

i've searched trough the forum and found some answers. htc made gb drop wifi connection when the signal drops bellow -88dcbl. cusom roms have a drop limit of 101dcbl. i was on stock (only rooted) GB 2.3.3 . I've downloaded kingdoms custom rom v1.7 intalled it but i get blank screen, only wallpaper, and can't get any further. like unlocking screen and getting in to the menu. would you recommend a custom rom that's most stable for DHD? btw my phone is rooted and all OFF. i flashed like... 4 radios all the same problem, so... stock roms are no good.

Do not need to change a custom ROM, and there is a wifi connection fix (decrease the drop threshold) flashable patch zip.
Sorry I have forgotten where is it, but I think you can search and find it among the forum.

CM 7 all the way for me, and if you must have sense ARHD is supposedly very good

Use wifi timeout app so phone can sleep properly, without significant drain.

Wi-Fi Unreliable...

So, I've been noticing my phone has been going through a lot more battery recently and part of the reason I believe is due to my Wi-Fi disconnecting and not re-connecting at times. Even if I reenter the password it still won't connect at times. I am forced to turn the antenna completely OFF and then ON again to get it working at times.
I have installed Fresh 0.53 since rooting and haven't noticed any issues with it until recently. The only other thing I have done is tried out different Kernels from ffolkes. Right now I am running the undervolted version os his kernel. Could that have something to do with it or is it unrelated to the Wi-Fi?!
BTW, I have been running the latest versions of the radio and WiMax.
no troubles here when i run flipz or any other rom on wifi
im running baked snacks and get GREAT GREAT battery life
My WiFi is pretty unreliable as well. Im running stock OTA update that was supposed to turn on N. I still get terrible WiFi reception even when very close to router. I get a lot of hang-ups as well when browsing and usually have to refresh a website 5-6 times till it finally kicks in. Either I have a terrible router, or my EVO still has really bad WiFi.

Poor radio

I found the radio on HD2 is not perticulaly good, I had a few situations where the hd2 can not pick up any signal or 3g signal but a nokia or SE has full 5 bar on the same network.
i only get G in my work place and home. It always trys to switch to 3g, the bettry drains 5% a hour on standby... Its really frustrating when you see the bettery goes down pretty fast but the webpages never gets loaded.
Does flash another radio helps? any recommodations? I am on O2 and using stock rom stock radio. Thanks in advance!
It's all down to trial and error, some radios will give you better battery, lesser signal, others great signal more drain on the battery, head into the hd2 radio section in rom development, just make sure you HSPL first and you're good to go, read the instructions carefully and no issues should arise, good luck!!

This really is a radio thing, the signal and also the battery life. Try to search for custom roms mate and see what fits your needs. Custom roms are built to optimize battery usage. Regarding the signal, just try flashing a different radio version, then give some time to get stable, about a day or two. If still you don't get the signal that you want then try again for another version. I suggest you try to use the energyrom and use the radio 2.12. Just search it and give it a try. I'll try to help with my very best. Goodluck mate!

Best way to reduce data connection drops?

Hello people,
I'm new to the hd2. I'm running chuckyrom lite with shubcraft 2.0 with hastarin's 8.2 kernel and I THINK my radio is 2.15.50.14... But I'm not sure. (how do I check?)
I lose my data connection every minute or so, pretty much crippling the usage of this device.
So far my searching has turned up methods that don't work (toggling airplane mode, etc)
Is there a more stable build I can be using? Or anyway I can reduce the connection drops?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I also have a similar problem. I have a completely stock WinMobile HD2 with the latest 2.15.50.14 also and I'm running DarkStone v3. This is my first Android ROM on the HD2. I've had it for about a week now.
I've ran my N1 for about a year now. I still have it and I'm just playing with the HD2 for now. I get the same drops as you where my service will just stop. A lot of the time my phone still show's full bars for reception. I think I'll set CM settings to give me a readout instead of the bars to see when I loose signal.
Very often when I do YouTube, or enter the Market, or the browser it will lag and get no connection for 30 seconds or more sometimes. Then start working, and occasionally I have to toggle Airplane Mode. But I'd love to be able to get a smooth and stable use out of it.

battery drain is already bad enough tho

[Q] Horrendous battery drain on 3g since KitKat - Stock unrooted

Since upgrading to KitKat (4.4.2) using the Google factory image and the flash-all I have had horrendous battery life. I've gone from 24-36 hours of battery to about 5-6 hours and I'm a fairly minimal user.
The drain seems to be coming from Android OS, in particular the Keep Awake is often 1-3 hours. After reading about others with the problem I did a factory reset and this seemed to resolve the issue but it's come back again. It's funny because it's fine at home, I've gone most of Christmas with no problems. Then I've come back to work and straight away my battery is getting kaned again.
I can't look for wakelocks because I'm not rooted and don't want to root. However I've tried experimenting by turning off location services, turning off wifi, and finally I've turned data off and this has done the trick. I'm wondering if it is something to do with 3g because I don't have any problem when on wifi at home.
The only thing I'm wondering is if I've got the right version of the radio, I had some problems when I was flashing so I did it again, everything seems fine but is there any way to tell if I've got the right radio rom?
Thanks in advance
Nick.
If you're data signal is weak it would use more power then say a good signal. Try using 2g only and see if that's any better.
How did you flash via adb I presume or OTA . Did you not flash the latest radio.
The end of your baseband number in settings will tell you what radical you're on , latest I believe is 98.

Thanks for suggestion but where I am sat has excellent signal (green in the mobile network signal under battery stats), I'm in the city centre sat in exactly the same spot I have been in for the last 18 months. This only started happening immediately after the 'upgrade' to KitKat.
I flashed using adb with the phone in fastboot. I did it like this to get a clean install because I've previously rooted the phone and I was having issues with the OTA update.
My baseband version is M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.98, is this correct?
As I've said previously I do not wish to root the phone again. It's possible this is not necessarily 3g, it might just be one of the apps having a wakelock but it becomes more evident on a 3g connection.
Is there any way I can get to the bottom of a wakelock on KitKat witout root?
The best way would probably be to uninstall each app one by one until you find the culprit , without root thought any game progress e.t.c will be lost unless it can be saved.
Checking only the apps that require data like Facebook e.t.c. will speed things up a bit.
Is anything showing under the inbuilt battery app ?.
Sorry but that's all I can think of , maybe someone with more knowledge can help. J

This was a problem for me when when stocked and unrooted, and without root you can not determine the real problem because battery stats will not be detailed enough. But problem is probably msm_hsic_host or something like that which is consume battery when phone is in sleep and even data is off. Actually some app is requesting data (which is off) and 3g modem keeps phone awake. My advice will be, fully charge your phone, from setting select 2g connection, data disabled(auto sync also), reboot your phone if battery is lower than %100 charge again and use it or do this before bed and sleep . Your problem would be solved for this condition. Some say google adressed this issue in 4.3 and 4.4 but I think it is still there for some reasons. BTW use 3g network only for internet otherwise it is just a battery drain, you gain nothing in terms of talk quality(and swithching between 2g and 3g is really painful). I solve my problem by rooting and install xposed framework and install gravity box and use status bar switches to change between 2g and 3g and believe me it is wonderful(no ART unfortunately). I know I talked too much but mai problem is probably 3g modem and you need root to solve it

Bende de var vallahi aynı sorun ama 2gde ve kernelliyim.Dur bir soriyim yabancılar.
İ have the same issue too, only with some minor differences, such as im always using 2g,im rooted,at the stock rom and also have a franco kernel installed on N4.What can i do sometimes?
4636v2 app from the play store will allow you to switch 2g / 3g without root. In fact there's quite a few apps that do that no need for exposed or root if that's the way you want to go.

[RESEARCH] Mobile network standby drain (Oreo)

Since the first release of oreo I started using the rom as a daily driver, later on paired with a good kernel it had some good perfomance
But after some days of using the rom i started to notice a huge battery drain caused by the Mobile network standby process?
My battery was old (OEM 2014 battery) so i decided to revert back to lineageOS just after a couple of days where I haven't had any issues with that mobile network standby
Now I'm really curious what is causing this issue, drain because I am using the phone on the same settings as on 7.1 nougat, I am living in a country where all networks run on 3G,H+,2G etc. so no 4G if this can be a cause
Changed the network modes many times and tested throughout the days but there was no sucess the drain was still persist, tried updating, downgrading bootloaders swithing modems but again no sucess
If there, in the world of android is any solution, here is the thread to discuss about this issue. :fingers-crossed:
I've wondered this too. I've been running los15 on my g900v , I rooted and boot the first ROM that would work without having or remembering todomuch, I ran the first custom kernal I could find via google, and ran whatever was noted as the latest Verizon modems. its like right off the bat, smooth , consistent battery life and nice. Then the next day I noticed things would crash, my Bt temperamental at best and restarted it just to get by. if I have sync on at home, WiFi off, it just chills , if I turn sync off and drive around town, my battery life gets eaten by the unknown. I pulled some logs to see whats up with my BT but haven't got around to it yet. But my battery too is old (I literally found my s5 in the trash) and I run weird processes and tweak settings all the time just to mess with it, so that could be it to. If I see anything weird I'll let you know.
I'm struggling with this issue for months, since the first port of an Oreo custom ROM (LOS and RR) for the Galaxy A3 Duos (my device) started being developed.
From the beginning I had this problem, and what, since then, puzzles me the most is the fact that only some of us, flashing the same ROM in the same device, experience the issue. Whenever I flash any of those ROMs, even before installing any user apps (or when running in safe mode), the drain is there, which leads me to think that the culprit must be some setting: not an app, because I have none installed; not the ROM itself, because not everybody has this problem.
Unfortunately there seems to be no developers looking into this bug.
For the sake of information, I've observed two things that should help to narrow down the issue; or maybe not.
First, all the devices affected, as far as I've searched, are double SIM.
Second, the Mobile Network Standby (MNS from now on) drain is narrowy connected with the Bluetooth drain (which "also" occurs in Oreo). I've experienced the following: If, after a full charge, I don't switch on Bluetooth at all, then what drains my battery (according to Advanced Battery Usage information) is MNS. However, if I switch bluetooth on -even if only for one minute- then what apparentlyh drains my battery is Bluetooth, at the same speed as MNS did before switching bluetooth on.
Funny enough, the battery use info reports zero minutes activity for both Bluetooth and MNS. But how can a process which runs zero minutes drain 50% of the battery?? I'm afraid that the battery use information isn't reliable. But then that's very bad news, since, in such case, it might well happen that the real juice sucker is neither MNS nor Bluetooth!! We might be dealing with a "ghost" here, since we can't even trust the battery use information provided by the OS.
If someone has something with which to contribute to this research, or any ideas, please comment.
I'm having the same trouble on android 9 betas, even better, my phone gets without signal during those times and there's nothing I could do but rebooting the phone.
How can we help solve this? it looks like it's annoying a lot of people now
