Just wanted to say it is amazing to be able to play playstation games on my evo. With the newer beast phones coming out it should be no time to play ps2 and others as well. I never thought I would see the days of playing full console games on a phone. I have also been playing nes, sms, genesis and snes. Brings back memories.....

lol it is going to be a long long while before you're playing ps2 and xbox games on your phone. PS2 emulation has only recently become truly playable and compatible and needs high end PCs. I know technology evolves fast but I'd say you're still years away from PS2 on your phone unless the device was dedicated to that purpose.

Unlike the Arc in the UK the Play seems to have experienced a sharp drop in price, it's not hard to find a SIM free version for sub £300. The only reason I can think for this is poor sales. Would I be right in that assumption?
Support from SE Is very weak, the playstation store for games hasn't being available for every country and the selection is pee.
FPSE are not user friendly is another reason. I guess 3rd party devs aren't interested in porting games like ff, tekkens, mgs, etc

I bought my play when it first came out for £300 so it's not that much of a price drop
Problem with the play is, its a niche device, it only appeals to hardcore gamers......
But as a device i cant really fault it, its fast, looks good, plays games great even though many would say it lacks power, the gps is amazing......
Think of it like the sega dreamcast a bit of an underated gem

I dunno if I'd say support has been weak seeing as they secured the three biggest titles exclusively for it: minecraft, Fifa and Dead space.
Wait for pan support and then you'll see what It was meant to be.

The price has dropped significantly here in the US as well. Sony really bungled this one. The device just recently started to be advertised (and that was after the price drop and moreso as a "cheap" phone since its only 99 bucks) and even supporters like myself are a bit frustrated because there really is no support by SE here, while there have been 9 or 10 playstation game releases in Europe, some are not available at all, and the rest are visible in the market but carrier locked for some strange reason. The Playstation suite is not available yet as well.
Maybe they are waiting to market it once the Suite is ready so theres a lot of features and games up for sale, but at that point the device will be almost dead.

You can say that again.
The Xperia PLAY not only stopped me from caring about dual-cores, but it's performance has left so little to be desired that I finally get to re-imagine my iPhone favorites as real games with real controls, and have a device so versatile that I didn't just replace my phone, I haven't been playing my PSP/DS as much :\

PSP................... Oh s**t i majorly forgot i had one of those . I totally agree, i only really game on my Xplay, Xbox or Ps3 now. The play may not be a dedicated gaming device but it scratches the itch i get when im out and about. It fast enough to play anything i want it to. Enough said.
@ Cat_On_Droid. Anyone who doesnt know how to use it (fpse) will normally search for info on how to. Googling Fpse guides brings up more than enough info on how to use/set up. If you can use a normal emulator like Gameboid etc. Then using FPSE is not much harder.
Oh and i also frickin loved the dreamcast
I actually think that it is picking up on sales now. I know a lot of people who are planning on buying and seeing an increase of people on forums doing the same.
I think for the US market it really got hit hard because Verizon held back the update so long and also didn't allow any unlocking.
Once AT&T launches it's 3G version I am sure it will take off in the US market as well as being able to hook up to some form of the PSN with the 2.3.4 update.
Not sure about the UK but the price itself put off a lot of people.
In my country I could buy 2 PS3's for the price of one Xperia Play... this should not be the case with a phone that plays games that are 2Gens behind the current PS.
If they had priced it cheaper in the first place it would have sold faster.
I have seen this commercial on TV twice now

First, you gotta pay for FPSE, that does turn off the customers abit (I understand why anyhow), second, PS pocket is advertised well, not FPSE. So people Will think that pspocket is the only means of playing ps games for those without basic knowledge of emulators, roms(u have to burn the disk aswell, which isn't user friendly again)

THIS.
Emulators aren't going to sell phones in major quantities and only serve to deepen the niche. The iPhone sells so well because any idiot can do basically anything it can do without much time or brain power investment.
The only way the Xplay and any successors will break out is if there is a "killer app" and an easy way to do it. PS Suite being on the phone from the factory making it easy to download a large library of classic games, and connect to your Playstation etc is the only way a phone like this would be successful. People like us who tinker around with it and take the time to learn how to do things are in the vast minority.
Lets just hope that by the time PS Suite is ready its not already too late.
They have also way over priced the PS1 games. Like games that are over 10 years old with ****ty graphics are more expensive than newer games with amazing graphics and great game play.
Sony PS would make a fortune if they sold the games at $1 a pop.. maybe $2 or maybe $1 per disc

You do. But trust me people would rather spend 10bux on FFIX than buying fpse, getting the 4 disks to burn, use ecm tools, drag to SD, etc. You can buy PSONE game at any time. Where as using emu requires a PC. Oh and if PS suite gets a good selection the emulation would be perfect, unlike fpse which Requires slot of updates. And don't you need to pay again to update? Not sure =\

Psx games are almost always more in depth than any android game. But they still should be cheaper at like 1.99 each like you said. Gameloft games with ripped off ideas and bad gameplay with graphics that are good doesn't make a good game.
The Xperia Play needed the following changes -
1) Landscape Home Screen Support
2) Auto Brightness Dsiable Option
3) PsP emulator
4) PS1 and PSP amazing games to be available at launch rather than the shoddies
5) Alot more Xperia Play exclusives
6) Analog touchpads to have the option to "swipe" or "hold" on ALL games
7) Touchscreen Emulator Software so you could assign buttons to parts of the screen (meaning you can play all games on the pad and buttons)
8) Touchscreen functionality on the analog touchpad (so you can scroll with the analog pad when browsing etc)
9) Dual Core processor
10) 1 gig RAM
11) Possibly a 4.3 inch screen
12) Better Signal (Data strength is not as good as other phones)
13) FM Radio (data Radio is useless on a limited data allowance plan)
14) 720p Video Recording enabled
If the Play had all this, (which are not unreasonable requests for the same price tag), it would of been so much more successful.
Basically the XPlay is just a like an HTC Desire, but with a smaller screen that is often dimmer and a control pad.
It is nothing more than a bog standard Android phone that is great for playing a few emulated games.
If you do not want it for emulation, then get a Samsung Galaxy S2.

Less than the Samsung Galaxy S2, since that has better than the specs i mentioned and still doesn't cost more than a XPlay on contract.
XPlay was way overpriced for the specs you get.
It was hardware outdated before it even hit retail.
xperia play not powerfull enough so which 1 best out of sony s1 and ps vita like many are trying to decide which has better processer which will be able to play games better have more emulators on fuction better what do you think
First of. Try to use some "." and "," in your text. It's really hard to read.
But to answer your question. My vote goes for Vita.
Yup, same goes here. Ps vita would be your choice. Having a quad core chipset and all.

Yeah, Xplay can't compete with all those gaming console out there but remember,it is a phone. Meant to be a phone + game player. Not a dedicated gaming portable console. I already own xperia play,I'll think I'll pass Sony S2(S1 is the normal type of tablets) and opt for Vita instead. I'm a trophy whore on a Playstation 3 system.
The Vita wont have any emulators until it can be cracked to run homebrew.
I think this is unlikely to happen until at least another 1-2 years.
Wait a second. The Vita better than the S1? S1 better than Vita? They are two so different devices and can't be compared!
- The Vita has a great hardware, yes, but if you don't want a console it will be a bit dumb to buy it.
- The S1 is a tablet witch is focused to multiple purposes (thanks to Android and his apps) but is not as powerful as the Vita.
So just think if you just want a super-handheld console just for gaming or a portable mini-computer-pda wich allows to do more things.
PS: yes, the Vita will have apps too, but we all know that it won't have the big variety that an Android OS based device has.

Why is it not powerful enough? It runs any PS emulated game and any Android game perfectly fine....
In terms of graphics processing, the vita is in a diffrent league to the Tablet S and Tablet P. They both use the NVIDA Tegra II chipset. Although the Tegra II is a dual core chipset. It struggles to surpass the Adreno 205 GPU in the xperia play!

I don't mean to offend... but when someone posts such a black and white synopsis; they come off as another one of those random G4-quality wannabe techie scrubs who go off clock speed without knowing anything about the technology that actually matters.
It's certainly not dual-core, but it's got some very snappy, very high-quality memory (better than any smartphone out), tons of under-the hood optimizations made for a premium gaming experience as well as a beastly acceleration chip.. and it really shows in the performance. As a single-core phone, Xperia PLAY manages to break it's way into the level of performance that's supposed to only be attainable by dual-cores. It's doing quite well at playing those Tegra Zone games just as smoothly as the Atrix.

Exactly. When I see posts like this I just don't get it, because if you play a game on it, and you play a game on something else, you're not going to see a difference! In fact it may even run better on the Play! And not one emulated game (that works) runs bad.

THANK YOU for clearing this misconception up!
Also Back on the Topic.
The main problem with Vita (as mentioned above) is that most of its potential will not be available to you until it is opened up (unlocked, cracked, jailbroken etc.).
You are likely going to be stuck only using what sony provides which will still be pretty darn good. Massive selection of psp games, ps1 classics, psn games... all at launch (since most of this stuff is already on psn).
Your best bet at emulating older systems up to the psx and playing mobile games is still the Xperia play. You get the convenience of it being a phone (among other things) as well as it being a great bang for your buck. This price just keeps dropping!
I'm sorry but any way you slice it the Xperia Play is an incredible value especially if you are a gamer. Just my opinion.
Let's see, what's better? A Phone, a Dualcore Tablet, or a dedicated gaming handheld that's not even out yet?
Apples, Oranges, and Bananas.
i will have all 3 lol, already have the play and tablet s.
X play for phone, emulators, jogging with runkeeper and music, control pad optimized games.
Tablet S for couch/coffee shop and in bed surfing/movie playback/reading and touch friendly games.
PS Vita as hardcore home console and portable games. Hoping its like the PSP go where you can hook it up to a tv and use dual shock 3 etc.
I had a go on the new sony tablet today in pcworld, very average to put it nicely!

I'm 100% positive the Vita will not have Dual Shock support or TV out.
I think they're trying to make it less a competitor for the PS3 by doing that, while also nullifying the argument of "If I was going to play at home I'd use a REAL console" that I would always hear from 360 fanboys
If only gaming isn't it obvious the PS Vita is the way to go?

Each of those devices is designed to cater to specific needs.

Once they (very soon promissed) launch android app any tablet could be connected with a regular console controller and you just play latest games from the cloud (or maybe your own pc using rdp or similar ) as long as you are online. Same is no problem with xplay. The point i,m making is that the specs of tablet without hardware gamepad are not so important in my opinion for gaming.
For offline hardcore gaming vita will be the best.

I found the Xperia Play plenty powerful in my review with great battery life
lets get real for a moment.
You bought a gamepad with a decent android cell phone attached to it.
You didnt buy a psp phone
You didnt buy a vita
Nor a ps3
This is an android. Same as all the other androids of 2011.
Spec's may be a tad different but they all run virtually the same.
Do not let the name sony fool you, it was sony Ericsson who brought the phone out and they didnt really have much to do with sony themselves, in fact they were only just recently completely bought out by them.
Do not overhype this device, its a great android device but it is not a ps3 that makes phone calls anymore than a windows phone is a portable xbox360.
If there is some great, but dont expect exclusives. Remember it is an android so any exclusive to this phone technically only means its not on the iphone or windows phone 7.
So please stop the hating and the ignorance. If you expected the xperia play to be anything more than what it is and were let down, you only have yourself to blame.
I agree with you, but the first sentence isn't needed.
Fixed it up
This thread confused me...it sounded like you were hating on the XperiaPLAY at first, then your closing sentences defend it. You should open with positive reinforcement of the device, rather than all the negative sounding things you opened with. Otherwise you'll just confuse folks, as I am still confused on your feelings about the phone haha.

I love my Play! I honestly havent played much games on it! I do love the idea though that when i do want to play games, i can play better games than any other Android device out there! (by better i mean full functioning controller, instead of trying to peek around touch screen analog stick, directional pad, and finger prints!.. lol) This is by far the best Android device i have owned. (spec wise) I honestly feel like im carrying around my PSPgo at times, which i also loved that too! So basically now i have my portable game, mp3 player, portable video player, and phone all in one!

i just want to say : sony , if you kidding us and don't want to make your big games on xperia play , make a emulator for play psp and ps2 games instead
you promised to make new version of playstation suit . please do it...
It seems to me that the Xplay was made to attempt to convert casual smartphone game players to hardcore gamers that use physical controls to counter the huge loss of market share to touch screen only games by console games. Sony Ericsson doesn't seem to aim the Xplay at hardcore console gamers, but to introduce casual smartphone gamers to hardware controls. As it stands now it was implemented decently; it would've been a huge fail it the hardware controls couldn't be used to navigate but they wisely chose to include it.
The name Xperia Play seems to be a wordplay, hence PlayStation Experience, or the PlayStation Experience phone as opposed to the Google Experience phone.
Sony should be pushing PlayStation Suite pretty soon to complement the release of the Sony Tablet S, the Sony Tablet P, and the soon to be released PlayStation Vita, all of which are PlayStation Certified devices that will have access to PlayStation Suite games.
To appreciate the Xplay, one has to understand that it's purpose is to introduce PlayStation-controller-styled hardware controls to the portion of consumers who haven't been introduced to them yet. If you're anti-physical-input or you insistent on using frustrating virtual controls to play games then the Xperia Play is not for you.

i agree with you, it would seem that too many people have bought this phone with the expectancy of it being more than it actually is
Yeah this quickly turned into exactly what the OP was talking about. My question however is, will each PS Certified device, such as the Play, Tab S, Tab P, and Vita, require their own ported version of each game, or will the game for Play work on all and vice versa? I ask cause if each game has to be ported individually for each device, then its going to take awhile to get new games, and people just need to be patient. I also own the Tablet S. and there isnt that many games for it either, but i dont really care, i didnt buy it for the games.
The PS suite SDK is common to all the PS certified devices.
I love the play except for 2 things,
A. The touchscreen is buggy (all my friends who have one have the same problem) where it registers random touches
B. The menu keeps still forgetting when I choose Alphabetical order (but it only seems to occur in high memory usage times, eg. after quitting a memory intensive game or something)

My only gripes with it are lack of HDMI/MHL support and low internal storage; two things that would've significantly improved the sales, shelf life, and enjoyability of the phone. The PlayStation Vita will suffer the same lack of HDMI support.
The Xplay is an Android phone that has physical game pad controls, nothing more nothing less.

There are a lot of games in the Market that works on multiple devices, but so far what titles ive seen w/ is created for X-Play only is Experiment 13 or what, great titles are not ported to this device, games are limited and a lot of them are kids game. Final Fantasy Remake, Devil May Cry and a lot more names that popularized on PS are created by Japanese. Im quite disappointed getting this phone, for no reason i didnt get the play station satisfaction. Itll be much better if sony would own modifications for xplay such as camera mod and game keyboard.

Mmh, Im pretty happy with play, It got vastly more support and was way more succesfull than Nokias Ngage and Ngage 2 software. Xplay perfected the formula and is heading to right direction.
Emulators work and there is few decent games on the market, I will be there buying Xplay 2 without hesistation
Granted, price was too high but there was multiple reasons, one being unique game pad that wasnt even mass producted before (I dont think they directly used PSP GO's model to create Xplay's plastics)
Besides, PS suite is yet to come, things might get interesting
After a year, few games ported ti xperia play, assassins creed and the devil may cry 4 fr. Japan... Oh yeah final fantasy also created on Japan and has english only for iPhone.

I dont think those are PS suite content (just PS store)
PS suite just entered Open Beta, just wait till its open for public (other than for developers)
you should try using PSXPERIA, it could convert your backup images (.bin, .iso, .img) of Playstation games into an APK, and it will be integrated into your Playstation Pocket, take a look at this link to see how it works now:

Besides using PSXPERIA, we can also play many HD games for ANDROID with the gamepad and even touchpad, it is the difference that we had and the others couldn't have it. you should try games that were published by Gameloft, EA, and Glu. they have many great games with many genre available..
Xperia Play is the best phone that i ever have, i bought it together with 2 of my friends, and one of them already sold it, because he didn't know how to maximize the potential of Xperia Play, you should try to use Stock Based Custom ROM, using PSXPERIA, and play Android HD Games in you XPeria Play

If you want games which don't treat you as a 13 year old, don't let 13 year olds (actually their parents) buy smartphones. Only now are we starting to see mature stuff (or at least parent-service of some kind) in video games, when some 30 year olds play with them.
XPlay-Swype
I'm lovin the phone
I'm sorry you don't get the joy out of the phone as the rest does.
But I honestly can't get your reason, you even say you are dissapointed for no reason... so
You can't get the playstation feeling? There are more than 300 android games out which work with the dpad, 300 games that your friends have to play via annoying touch controls. Even tho Shadowgun, Backstab, Gangster Rio and so on aren't playstation titles, they are awesome to play and no kid games... Besides.. you can play various Playstation games, FinalFantasy, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid to name just a few.
Plus All those other emulators SNES/N64/Dosbox/Sega which let you play classic games with the dpad... It's awesome!!! Here a quick round of Street Fighter on SNES, bit of Mario on N64, kill some zombies in resident evil....
You get a full android phone with all the goodies + an Univarsel pocket gaming machine <3
I guess you either love the phone, or do not care for its features in which case you shouldnt have got it in the first place.
Playstation Suite is not something that can be released as such, it is a developer program, enabling the users of Playstation Certified devices to download games from a community of developers, these developers, through the playstation suite SDK can take advantages of Playstation Services, however currently not trophies. These games will then be added to the Playstation Store on your XPlay.

+1 , i'm agree with you , there is no sony's exclusive game .
i'm sure if samsung or htc were experienced enough on games as prefect as sony has , they allways wold make sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many #1 games , and they would show off on their mobile-play technology !
i can't understand why sony with this huge experience on PS1, PS2 ,PS3 , psp and vita don't want to make its #1 games on xperia play ! or don't want to make a powerful xperia play !
our xperia play is really out of date for #1 games ...
Try Emus like FPSE (Y)
With those Emus you can play all these old but gold games like Tekken 3 or Wipeout 3 or somenthin else
I am one of those people who loves their play
I was under the impression that most people got the play for emulation, since Sony ALWAYS fails when it comes to mobile devices.
The ps3 isn't exactly doing well either.

What about the PSP? Despite what people say about it, it was an awesome little handheld
I got the Play as a good step up in Android technology.
I previously had an X8...

When I say they fail, I mean the selection of games. The PSP was seriously lacking in selection of good titles. The PSP Go just made things worse.
And now look at the Play. Yes, the device itself is great, just like with the PSP, but really, how many good games has Sony released for it, or how many exclusives have we been given by their partners? Almost nothing. I don't consider gameloft adding a few pieces of code for our controllers a big deal, as their games are half-ass most of the time anyway.
And aside from the controller code, we haven't seen any optimization to make up for our modest hardware, so a lot of games lag. Yes you can fix some of it with overclocking, but that isn't something that should be required. A gaming device should be ready to handle games right out of the box, not require hacking to make them run at a playable fps rate. Had Sony worked harder to bring us optimizations, we wouldn't be having this problem.
And yes, optimized code really does make that much of a difference. Try this as an experiment, I dare you: Get GTA San Andreas for PC, and try running it with the same computer, but switch between two video cards of equal specs, one ATI, and one nvidia. It'll run one hell of a lot better on the nvidia card. Why? Because Rockstar Games optimized the game for NV cards.
The hardware isn't the issue. The issue is that Sony promises it's customers a lot of things that they never deliver. Where's our mobile PS suite? Where are all the exclusive games we were supposed to get? What about the original PlayStation titles that never showed up?
They did the same thing with the PS3. Look how long it took them to get a few decent games that weren't on every console. PS3 owners were led to believe they'd get the best game system on the planet, so they paid double the price of an Xbox, and what did they get? A bluray player that also has a few games they could have played on a console that costs half the price. Well, was half anyway. Not anymore, but how many years did it take?
I heard a few people say the devices will improve now that Ericsson is gone, but frankly I don't think that's the case. It seems highly likely that the Sony half of the company was playing a large part in the problems regarding updates, missing promised features etc. Seems all too obvious given their history with devices that were made solely by them.
It's not about hardware, it's about the user experience.

oh ,thanks god , finally i've find someone that have same opinion with me!
i'm agree with you my friend .
on my opinion , we had bought xperia play (as a gamer ) cause we love sony's exclusive games , sony promised a lot of games ...
i always was with sony , from playstation1,ps2,psp ....till now(ps3) . i'm personally waiting (for one year ) to see a sony's exclusive game . but nothing happened !
as capitan67 said above , we have to root , convert game's image... but what sony have done ?!
after one year , they have forgotten all promises and just lunch TAKKEN1 with some of useless games !
hey guys , does sony kidding us ?! what can we do with TAKKEN 1, why medievil 1 ?! ...
i can remember 2 years age , when i had bought X10 mini pro and what SonyEricsson had done with us on X10 series .
i though thought this time , sony will make all promises true !
excuse me if my English is bad , i don't want to blame sony , i'm still with sony , i just wanna say that we don't need GAMELOFT or other mobile-game-developer. i prefer to play n64 , ps1 , snes games will all long and nice story instead of gameloft... low level's game.
i could buy a galasy s2 , or galaxy note if i want to play mobile-global games , cause that's display screen is much better, also cpu ang GPu ...
i had bought xperia play , cause i'm GAMER , i love SONY'S GAMES , i LOVE SONY'S EXCLUSIVE games . ..
i don't know , what sony will promise to us on xperia play 2 ?!?
But maybe you should enjoy this device
However, xplay is the only phone which has the keyboard game, just like the PS. And that's so cool

I'm going iPhone after this device so I don't have to deal with this Sony not fulfilling our promises crap. Never had a problem with Apple. I will still buy Sony's consoles though.

I think the real reason why Sony has not been able to release any good games via the PlayStation Pocket App for the Xperia Play, such as FF7 or FF8, is because unlike releasing these games on a console like a PlayStation 3 or a PSP, which has their own custom OSs [operating systems] the Xperia Play runs Android. Releasing FF7 or a big game like that for the Play would be like releasing it for Android. In no time every other Android user would have access to the game. I think a developer like Square Enix would much prefer charging $10-$20 for FF7 on iOS [iPhone,] which supposedly has more customers willing to pay for that content. It's really not Sony's fault, it's actually the game developers. Just look at what Square Enix has done with iOS. They have released multiple Final Fantasy games, created an RPG specifically for the platform [Chaos Rings,] all while pretty much ignoring Android. It's not so much that the developers are ignoring the Xperia Play, they are in fact really ignoring Android.
