Is it just me or does Gingerbread on the phone seem faster and smoother than Honeycomb on tablet with exact same specs?? When my Atrix only had Froyo, I always noticed it performed the same as my Xoom and apps were either fast or slow the same exact way. However, now that I'v gotten Gingerbread on my Atrix, I've noticed apps are much, much smoother...iOS smooth (hate to use that as reference, but...). Take for example the Dish Network app, scrolling through the guide was (on Atrix-Froyo and Xoom ) horrible, but now with Gingerbread on the Atrix, the guide scrolls like butter.
Thoughts???

Hmm... well, the Atrix has very similar hardware to the Xoom.
Gingerbread is a phone OS. It is lighter weight than Honeycomb.
Xoom has a screen that has just short of double the number of pixels that the Atrix's has.
If you're upset with the Xoom's performance, download Tiamat Kernel with overclocked GPU and jump the processor up past 1.5 GHz. The thing screams.

Apps are mostly made for the phones.

I was just about to point this out, although I honestly have no idea how much that affects the GPU/performance in terms of "2x laggier" or however you want to describe it, but actually be twice as laggy in numbers and not just "what it feels like."
I wish someone would find out how the Xoom would benchmark if it had lower resolution, just out of curiosity.
Mainly because Honeycomb is still a work in development, an ongoing project. The Android phone OS has had a few years now to get everything worked out, figured out, and made to run smoothly. The Honeycomb tablet OS on the other hand has had only a few months now of ongoing development. It's progressing and in due time will turn out how the Android phone OS did, amazingly solid! Do you think that when they released Android for the very first time a few years ago that it was perfect with no lag issues? No. Same goes with Honeycomb as it is their first major release for the Android tablet world.
Our next major release will be Ice Cream Sandwich, which should be a game changer for everything we know about the Android OS. So expect performance boosts with the next big release along with a whole slew of new goodies.
I expect ICS to be like when you are coming from 2.0 Eclair then updating to the latest 2.3 Gingerbread in terms of speed, stability, and features. That's a major jump in the update department! That's how I feel ICS will be when it launches. I feel that any lag issues experienced by the users will be worked out by then, giving us a super silky smooth OS that runs on both phone and tablet alike! That's what we wanted all along, right?
well I don't know how many people here have tried it but ADW Launcher makes the Xoom fly...until the lagginess goes away I'm sticking with that launcher...try it!!

Agreed! Been using Adw Launcher EX myself since day one on my Xoom. It hasn't had anymore Honeycomb specific updates in months, but it's still a rock solid launcher to use as a replacement to the stock one. I choose Adw over the Honeycomb launcher any day.
Main difference will be screen res, Atrix is pushing 384000 pixels while the xoom pushes 926720 pixels (rough amount) so its like having 2.5 atrix screens put together, for me that explains all
I work with 3ds Max and 2 monitors, when I had only one screen 3ds max moved smooth as butter, but since I dropped a second screen 3ds max is not the same and I bet it crashes more often. I think there is a similar situation on these devices. Someone needs to port gingerbread to the xoom and see how it performs against the atrix.
Not any one thing in particular, but just overall it "feels" unresponsive? I have the OTA update before it was suspended.
Am I the only one noticing this?
Also has anyone been able to actually use the new Calculator? That thing doesn't register button presses to any form of practicality for me.
I'm just wondering if there are steps to fix this, or if this is how ICS is on the Nexus S. I'd rather go back to GB if that was the case.
I haven't noticed any unresponsiveness issues, to be honest. Although I had the phone just for a short while before the ICS update came out. So I didn't have much time to get accustomed to GB in order to be able to compare them accurately.
I had some random crashes, but last night I did a factory reset and it solved those issues for me. I'm using the calculator on a regular basis, no issues there.

Because gb was made just for this phone. Every other phone just runs it, wasn't tailored for them.
Now ics was made just for the gnex. Same as all nexus phones.
Gb was made for the hummingbird. Etc etc...

Everything is working up to par on my end.
It is fast, but GB was faster overall. Not sure even "faster" is the better word. Perhaps "snappier" is more appropriate.
You can notice it in the small things... Opening an app, scrolling in some menus, etc.

Browser experience is best ever!! Changing tabs is fast and very cool with the zooming animations
I say overall, it's feeling even faster than gingerbread.
Even with the battery issues, I'm not downgrading.
No problem here. Pretty smooth and snappy. Of course I flashed a custom kernel, OC and all the mod goodies. All help my phone snappier. I also recommend spare a buck and buy Autostarts app from the Market, if your phone is rooted.

Runs very smooth here. Stock ICS 4.0.3 on i9023 ;-)
The experience overall is very smooth. The browser has a few quirks here and there with some websites, but overall its much better than the GB browser. The only place where I feel the phone struggles is opening the app drawer. It's like waiting for one of the older automatic cars to gear shift when u put the pedal to the metal.
My only problem is the frame-rate in ICS. Just swiping over home screens seems limited to 30 fps (definitely below 60).

flashed the 4.0.3 stock plus the Glados v2.3 kernel (deep idle is a beast, rly...) and my NS is faster than ever. I'd never return to gb.
battery power ends in about a day if I use the phone intensively (internet, wifi, 3g, some games, music and so on...) but in a daily use (some sms, facebook news, email reading, etc) I'm experiencing no "battery drain problems" at all. charged 2 nights ago, still at 68% right now... (probably because the kernel, tho...)
edit: i forgot to mention that I'm running 110% live OC w/stock voltages and get no reboots or similar hellish-noobish things
Mine seems quicker and more responsive than ever I'm happy to say.
No lags or any problems with ICS stock rom. Also some of the best battery life for a long time.

Absolutely no,
I formerly used CM7.1 and then installed ICS in the cleanest possible way (wiped everything, went to 2.3.3, updated to latest Gingerbread, wiped everything installed ICS from the zip file)
It works alot better, it feels much smoother, web browser was improved alot.
I can use the calculator properly and it works better than in GB, maybe its a random matter that some people face.
In my case , ICS >> GB. feels as if I got a new phone.
I love ICS on the Nexus S, no sluggishness at all. Custom roms seem to be very buggy and slow. I'm running it strait stock with no problems at all.

i hate to say it but its most likely a hardware issue... the Tegra-II (2) is a very crappy processor (depending on who you talk to i guess) they [samsung/nvidia] didnt really think this through when they created this tablet... MHO...

I don't use many widgets but I have absolutely no lag. So try reflashing. but even still once its finished it will be even faster.
and I think its technically in beta now.
the portrait mode in CM9 is still not there yet though. but I never use portrait mode so it doesn't bother me.
are you overclocking at all?
TBH I'm not sure why you felt that complaining deserved creating a new thread.
Mine is butter smooth in portrait or landscape... using ICS.

I don't know, you can use adw and there's one lag whatsoever.
maybe try closing any background apps that are running. They could take up RAM and slow down the tab
I have ICS with NO widgets and flashed 3x and still have some lag, not a lot but no butter smoothness as some of you claim.
And I refuse to use ADW because it makes it feel like an oversized phone, and this is a real Tablet
It's pretty smooth for me, even with a couple of widgets on the main screen.
You don't need to be worried about it, if anything look for the Xoom ICS videos. That is a finished update for a very similar hardware tablet. It's a lot better than the current incarnation of ICS to the Galaxy Tab.
Not to mention that ICS is still pretty alpha, if not just experimental.

Hmm likely a reflash is needed. i have ADW using 3 screens with 9 widgets and 32 apps and no lag

TBH this is as smooth as ics gets. android as a whole is not known for butterly dripping smooth, android is a full blown os for mobile phone / tablet with unspeakable power. the power to one day rival laptops not to rival butter for smoothness! if all you want is butter smooth transition moving from screen to screen, wait for a windows phone os tablet or get an ipad.
Tegra2 libs/drivers are outdated. Once source is released then I believe there will be a significant improvement. Head over to the cyanogen webpage, where cyanogen basically says what I stated above.

Disable wallpaper scrolling. It definitely solves the lag problem on homescreen. Use trebuchet, apex etc. But only on landscape mod not on portrait. It's a Tegra 2 issue. Every device that comes with Tegra 2 have it.

But, even the galaxy tab 7.7 with it's 1.4ghz exynos cpu was very laggy on honeycomb when watching it on you tube, the smoothness difference between that and the galaxy tab 10.1 was very little. So it's more of a android tablet ui problem rather than a tegra problem, I believe. The tegra 2 isn't that bad; when overclocked to 1.2-1.4ghz to keep it up to date with other tabs.
I have never experienced much lag at all on my Tab.. Have tried both ICS versions and they both flat out fly! Task's ROM 14 Slim which is TW 3.2 based is screaming fast as well...
I think some people may have a poorly written app(s) running in the background that's zapping memory..
portrait lag is never going to be fixed unless a dev here fixes it for them.
the xoom has official ics and its still laggy in portrait and in other places....so counting on the devs here for something

The UI problem I'm talking about occurs only on portrait mode. It's buttery smooth on landscape but lags on portrait doesn't matter whatever you do. That's the Tegra 2 problem.
Some have pretty low standards for defining lag. Lag for me is anything below 30 frames per second. 60 is optimal, 30 is minimum.
With that said, my gtab gets really laggy when LWP is activated (which isn't the case for the SGS2) despite running on task rom + pershoot [email protected] 1.4ghz.
..and yes I'm running ADW launcher.
I hope that ICS will fix this but im not expecting too much given that Tegra 2 is a POS processor that could hardly run anything properly.

I figured it was just the bloated Samsung skin that caused it so I instantly rooted it and installed CM9 4.0.4. However, that doesn't seem to have helped much.
I've found that even just typing an email in Gmail causes the onscreen keyboard to become extremely slow after typing the first paragraph, to the point where I have to close out of Gmail and re-open it in order to get it to respond correctly again.
Is there something I'm missing here? Shouldn't this thing be much snappier than my Galaxy Nexus? Is there another ROM I should be using?
The two Rom's I like right now on mine are either the Galaxy Task or Clean Rom.
You could also try AOKP, that seemed to do pretty well on mine too.
Tegra 2 (or Tegra in general) just blows. At least for a device this size.
Have you tried using different keyboards? If not, it might be an idea to download and experiment with some to find if any resolve the lag issue. Just an idea.

While tegra 2 isn't great, it shouldn't have problems with ICS. Even on a mostly stock honeycomb build, my tab is running pretty smoothly without overclocking. Except for the rare scrolling hiccup. Most likely the build isn't optimized well enough, and CM9 nightlies are still alpha builds at best. I would suggest either flashing a more stable debloated honeycomb build or waiting for at least an RC version of CM9.
I feel the same way, it's so slow its going backwards. I have almost stopped using it all together because it's a pain to use xd

I have ICS AOKP installed on my GT-p7510 and I gotta say, it's pretty fast. Except from not having a working camera driver, there's nothing to complain about.

Why would you ever think this tablet would be snappier than the Gnex? The Gnex is newer and has a newer and faster processor, with newer, more optimized software.
I don't get why you would think a tablet produced in May/June of last year would be somehow snappier than a device produced in October/November.
While I haven't found the tablet to have the same problems you described, I have to say I'm not very impressed with the Tab's performance. But we shouldn't be so quick to judge ICS; the drivers are community written so I wasn't expecting a lot out of them. ICS ROMs are smooth but there's always some sort of thing that pisses me off, or something that sparks a lagfest. Honeycomb ROMs seem to be a lot smoother. But I seem to notice a slice of laglaglag when the tablet is in portrait. Not that I use it in portrait, but still.
Games were a lagfest in both ICS and Honeycomb, the graphics looked pretty good but what use was it when the games are running at 10FPS? The only thing I can really say I like about this tablet is everything it's not supposed to do; run Ubuntu, both inside Android, and a native install of Ubuntu with Android removed. I like playing PS1 games on it too, something that crappy iPad couldn't do.
Another thing; tablet apps. Developers seem to ignore tablet users. Most apps I've used made me feel like my tablet was a big ass phone, and I've seen this complaint a lot.
But I gotta say I really regret not waiting. I wanted to go for the Transformer Prime but didn't want to wait. I regret letting my lack of patience get the best of me.
I hope you actually flashed a rom after flashing CWM or else there's obviously going to be no difference. I somehow have never experienced issues on my end. Everything is fast for me, with either a stock rooted/unrooted rom or a custom rom. And if you couldnt see a difference between Honeycomb and ICS on your tablet, then something must be wrong. Even with the small glitches and bugs, it's very fast. Maybe you should overclock as well.
same here- galaxy task10 is very smooth - couple it with ADW and it is very very snappy - ICS gives me a little bit more snap - so not sure what standards the OP is referencing since i also have Gnex and it does not feel any faster than my current tab

Agreed with the previous 2 posters. I have used cyanogen, and am currently using task 14. While I too am wishing I had waited and bought the transformer (for other reasons), I am very happy with the responsiveness of my tab. Task 14 is, for me, a very smooth take on honeycomb. Add in some of boosted's themes for that ICS look, and I am quite content.

But, I am not making judgements on ics until Sammy release their official version, and hopefully that will be smoother as it isn't all the honeycomb kernel source code patched and hack to make ics work. Also, does anyone else notice that on cm9 games feel like they have a lower frame rate than honeycomb, I was comparing games like mine craft on cm9 compared to my friends stock gtab10.1 and his stock 3.2 had a much higher frame rate, does anyone worse find this the case please?

If I'm sick of lags I just overclock to 1400 and change the governor to performance.
Unfortunately I usually end up slowing that down when my battery drains in approximately 15 seconds...

I also notice the Galaxy tab 10.1 is laggy.
I own an Asus transformer prime and the missus owns the galaxy tab, and its true that out of the box the asus is much much faster, mostly on the home screens. I had attributed this as a difference between HC 3.2 and ICS, we shall see.
However,
I cant mention enough just how vastly superior the wifi is on the galaxy tab. The difference is night and day. Oh it works on the asus alright (I have the latest serial version), but it seems to be very patchy. After an hour of using the browser on my TF prime and then picking up the galaxy tab the connection feels so much more solid and responsive and using the tab comes as something of a relief.
Thing is, it doesnt really matter what the specs are on paper, all I really care about is responsiveness of a good looking UI and good wifi. I feel that the tf prime is going to need a hard mod to sort out the wifi, which i will not do. On the other hand, I feel that a software update on the tab could sort out some of its lag issues, which would make the tab more useful in my household for our needs.

Well a combination of ICS and a quad-core processor will blow away the Galaxy Tab without question.
stock = sucks
stock + swype keyboard = sucks ^2
In my case I flashed Gtask rom or overcome with pershoot kernel and keep avoiding swype.. and everything runs like silk now.

I've tried a whole bunch in the past few months and all of them seem to run pretty damn sluggish despite them claiming to be "fast". I'm sure that it didn't run this horrid when I first bought the device when it first came out.
I don't fancy going back to honeycomb, but if thats the only way to get things running nicely back again then I guess there isnt much choice.
are there any 4.0/4.1/4.2 roms which run good enough to use as a daily driver? Currently running the Paranoid Android port.

Highly recommend the KatKiss 4.2.2 or 4.3 ROMs.
Be sure to use TWRP recovery and do a factory reset from recovery. I would HIGHLY recommend a FORMAT DATA as well as this will speed up the IO performance of the /sdcard/ that can make it slow. This will wipe all data.
If you do not wipe data it will take some time to scan the media on the tab on first boot. Maybe 15-90 min.
If you don't for at data, be sure to run the two optimize scripts in a terminal to help with the slow IO issue.

Honestly, I haven't seen anything like this with any ICS-onwards ROM vs stock. 100% the opposite.
When you say sluggish, what do you mean? Desktop transitions, animations, load times, specific app performance? With EOS/KatKiss 4.1 ROM's onwards, everything about my TF is improved. Desktop transitions, scrolling browser smoothness, etc. are all seriously improved since honeycomb.
With KatKiss 4.3, I haven't even bothered yet to overclock.
I run KatKiss 4.3, and so far it is the best ROM that I have seen for this tablet. It is much faster than stock Honeycomb ever was, and has been extremely stable for me. My tablet has currently been up for fourteen days with no issues.

When you say sluggish, what do you mean? Desktop transitions, animations, load times, specific app performance? With EOS/KatKiss 4.1 ROM's onwards, everything about my TF is improved. Desktop transitions, scrolling browser smoothness, etc. are all seriously improved since honeycomb.
With KatKiss 4.3, I haven't even bothered yet to overclock.

I have the same problem as OP. The stock was pretty smooth, but after upgrading to KatKiss 4.2.2 everything is sluggish. Animations/transitions are choppy. Browsing the web is becoming an exercise in frustration with long page loads. The subjective feeling is as if the processor became slower or there is less RAM available. I compared this with a first gen Nexus 7 and that thing runs the way my transformer used to.
Well I stand corrected. I upgraded to KatKiss 4.3 and my Transformer just flies. So it was either a bad installation or something about 4.2.2 that it did not like.

cool. will try to install katkiss then. I think thats probably one of the few ones i havent already tried
