So today I left my tablet to charge, it was at like 25% left, while I went to out to my practice. When I returned about 2 hours later, it wouldn't turn on. Before I had left, it was charging so it's not that it ran out of power because the outlet didn't work. I switched the outlets, plugged it into a computer, pressed the power button a bunch of times; nothing. Perhaps I got a defected unit or downloaded a bad app? I don't know :/; ideas?

try holding down the power button for 15 seconds
Hold the power button 15 seconds, let go, then try again for another 7 seconds.
Wow, that actually worked, thank you so much (held it till it turned on, about 10-15 seconds). Would you happen to know why it had just turned off like that? I'm at 81% battery now, so it turned off at some point on its own, and why did I have to do such a long power button press?

i believe there is a sleep mode/lock hiccup sometimes. I experience it with my media dock but not my keyboard dock. its weird and sometimes annoying but not too much to kill my day lol
Yeah this happened to me too. Just a small quirk.
Oh, ok, thanks guys lol I had like freaked out.
I got my Tab yesterday. Used it then set it charging overnight. Won't power on this morning. The back does get warm though. I tried holding down the power button for at least a minute and also tried the 15 then 7 approach. Nothing.
I also tried an idea from a different forum (referencing a Froyo glitch) and tried touching the screen while holding the power button.
Does this sound like a hardware fail?
I had the same problem. Held the power button for 15 seconds and then 7 and nothing happened. Held the power button for a long time. What do I do next?
Mine didnt turn on today. Tried the 15 second press procedure and nothing happened. I grabbed my wall charger and plugged it in and left it sitting there for a minute. I tried the 15 second procedure again and this time the screen lit up and was showing that the battery was charging because it was in red. After about a minute the tab booted itself and all is normal now. I guess my battery went dead since i hadnt charged it and completley turned off my tab. Thats why it rebooted itself. Nothing to worry about.
happened to me too
looks like there is a glitch ... mine was left charging today ... and it did charge but did not want to start... i did leave it on.
I connected to PC and press Power ON + Volume Up + VOlume down all at the same time and it did seem to restart ... worried there is something wrong with it though.
I bought it in USA and Im in UK I wonder if things go wrong if Samsung UK would repair it.
I've had it for about 9 days and have used it every single day. Last night I downloaded 2 movies onto it and everything was fine. Today it would not power on one bit! I charged it over night so the battery shouldn't have drained. I ended up fixing my problem by doing the following:
Held the power button.
At the same time, placed a finger on the screen.
Held it down for 15 seconds or more and it booted up!
Not sure why it only worked when I put my finger on the screen.
I ended up exchanging it either way just in case.

this also happened to me for the first time this morning from leaving it on charge overnight.
however i was able to start it by removing cable and holding power for 15secs.
what could be causing this? I hope it doesn't happen every night.
I had this problem as well a few weeks ago. Samsung sent me a shipping label and told me to ship it back. I got it back in just under 10 days. They never did tell me what was wrong but they shipped back my original Tab.
Guys,
Is this happening when you leave it booted up and charging overnight or is the unit powered off and charging?
I will say that this issue has only happened to me one time and it happened under the following conditions (Ive had a Tab sense launch day):
- Battery was at 35%.
- While booted, I plugged it in to charge overnight.
- The next day at 09:00 I attempted to use it and had to hold the power button for 15 sec to get it to boot.
So, It *might* only happen if its booted with low battery and you charge it overnight. Powering it off and charging doesnt appear to cause it at all in my case.
Yes it happened while powered on and left to charge overnight. Battery was probably around 30-40% as you said.
Still doesn't explain why it would happen regardless of the % of battery left. Hence the reason it's meant to be charging.
I've had it happen very quickly. High level of charge, plug it in, walk off, come back, unplug, and it's dead, need the 15 second press to power back on.
Not a huge deal, but annoying. And a bit scary, since mine went into the "sleep of death" once already, took four days for the battery to drain enough to break the nvflash loop it was in.

Probably I'm just new, but since after rooting it, it slowly ran out of battery as phones do, but now I'm unable to switch it on. Tried several ideas but to no avail.
I guess it isn't a big deal, I can always return it to the store later today and ask for a replacement since I only bought it last week.
Whilst I'm here, anyone think it's worth dropping this and switching it for another one whilst I'm at it.
Empty battery? Maybe you should charge it for a while.
won't boot
Hi, my dell streak is only three weeks old, but all of a sudden won't boot. Haven't done anything I shouldn't have. Have just downloaded a few apps, was using it at night and woke up in the morning to find it was off and can't be switched on. Took the battery out and put it back on again. Pressed the shutter button along with the power button, and held down the volume keys along with the power button, nothing seems to make a difference. Can someone help please!

try charging it for a while?
Take it back to the store and get a replacement, if its still under warranty.
Hi Guys, thanks for your replies. It's working now, this is what happened:
I woke up in the morning to find my phone switched off and I couldn't switch it on. I connected the main power charger for 5 mins, then laptop for 5 mins to charge but neither helped. The defect I think is in the charger. I left the phone connected to the laptop for a few hours, then switched it on to find it still wouldn't switch on. Then disconnected the sync cable, took the battery out, and put it back in - and voila, it switches on!
Issues: charger failed in two weeks; the streak doesn't switch on when the battery is down even if it's connected to a source of charging (in this case, laptop). Dead battery - charge - take battery out - put it back in - switches on.
Hey guys,
I have had this particular device for about a week... it is a replacement as my last one had a faulty cellular radio. So this is still under free replacement warranty - but I hope it doesn't need it.
Anyway, I was at the pool hall today, and the phone was working ok then one time I pulled it out of my pocket and it was dead... home button did nothing and the power button did nothing. But it had plenty of battery life left (60ish %).
About 10 minutes later I plugged it into the charger and after about 45 seconds it showed the battery charging and all was good. What could have happened?
I keep it in a case (TPU case) so I was guessing overheating but I wasn't really even using it. So I don't see how it could have been that hot.
Edit: also, when hitting the power button it doesn't go from full brightness to screen off and vice versa.... it has like a middle step of going dim first. Then off or on, my last device didn't do this... is it common?
Needless to say I am a little concerned.
Cheers!
Hey everyone, Im having a problem thats making me worry. I was using my phone today and for some reason the phone wont turn on after I turned it off. I havent dropped the phone at all and it hasnt been abused in any way. The last thing I was doing before I turned it off was trying to send feedback for the Yahoo Mail app because it wouldnt sync automatically, but even that was unsuccessful because it wouldnt send. So I thought I should just reboot it but afterwards its not turning on at all.
I tried holding the power button for at least 20 seconds and still nothing is happening, and I tried plugging in the power cord to see if that would help but it hasnt. Has anyone gone through a similar issue? Please Help
Thanks.
Leave it plugged in for fifteen minutes without touching it.

Try holding volume up + power to see if you can get into recovery then reboot from there.
Also, give some more details about your setup...
Rooted/Stock/What Rom/Kernel?
Yea I left it alone for a bit and then I held the power button while holding down both volume rockers and somehow it turned on. I dont know why this happened but I'm just glad it turned back on, it gave me a good scare though. I just hope it doesnt happen again
Mine is completely stock, I havent done anything with it yet
And may I ask what was your battery percentage level like after the short charge? Maybe the phone drained it all just being turned off... There were some cases of this here...
i wanted to add that i had a similar problem with my phone not turning back on. However, I managed to fix what was wrong by just plugging in the usb cable. I know you've tried it, but just in case someone else stumbles upon this thread (like me!) and has a problem turning on their nexus, I wanted to share my experience.
I haven't done anything to my phone other than add my old apps to my Nexus since I received it 1.5 weeks ago. It's stock. I've never dropped it or gotten water on it or anything. I charged it overnight last night and stuck it in my purse on the way to work. I think I briefly saw a working screen after I unplugged it this morning. However, the first time I tried to access my phone today was after I got to work. It wouldn't turn on, though that pinkish light at the bottom was still blinking. I tried calling it and the Nexus wouldn't ring even though the call went through a few rings and then onto voicemail. I tried holding down the power button for a while and also holding the power button with the volume keys to see if that would work, and it did not. Finally I borrowed a usb cable to plug it in, hoping the jolt of power would wake it up. That worked. It gave me the charging symbol for a little bit and then gave me the startup/loading screen with the glowing x made of arrows. I checked my battery and it was at full charge. Well, it was at 85%, which is odd since I plugged it in for about 9 hours last night to charge and there has only been 3 hours of non-use since I unplugged it. Also, if it was really turned off during those 3 hours it shouldn't have ate up any battery. Anyway, I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents in case anyone else has this problem. My brother, who gave me the Nexus, told me that he only has 2 weeks to return it if there's something wrong with it or I don't like it. Needless to say this gave me a scare, since the 2 weeks is almost up.

Yes this happened to me the other night. I was making a phone call and accidentally hit the power button. I then tried to turn the screen back on in order to hang up the phone and it would work. I tried holding the button for 15 seconds, tried pressing the volume up/down keys, and still nothing. I then put it back in my pocket for a minute or so and tried again. When I did that the screen came back on and the call was still active. Very strange, and I hope it doesnt happen again....

Same thing is happening to me right now.
Running stock. Not rooted. Phone charge was around 70% and I was on twitter and the app force closed. So I decided to restart my phone then went to turn it back on and it wont respond. Tried holding down the power button for 20 sec. Volume up and power, volume down and all 3 at the same time. Still nothing. Leaving it on the charger for awhile and the screen is blank no battery logo or anything.
Not quite sure what to do now?

I try hold Power + Volum Down - or Volum + but get same result.
I plug in Adater and wait for it. I will check it 2 hour later.

I'm having similar problems. Lots of random rebooting and refusals to turn back on sometimes, even though the LED at the bottom is flashing so i know the phone is still powered up. Also, sometimes when i have it plugged into a computer through usb it will get extremely hot and completely shut down, not turning back on for a long time. I called the google play store and someone is going to get back to me. I love my nexus 4 so i hope i can get this fixed or a replacement.

I had this issue too a couple of times playing Pandora through my car's Bluetooth. That was when the Nexus 4 had 4.2.1. I have not had this issue with Pandora since the upgrade to 4.2.2.
However, I just now had this issue with Movie Studio app and exporting a video I edited. It turned off its screen like normal screen timeout but then would not come back on.
I had to Volume Up + Power button for a few seconds and then release to get it to reboot.
This same thing is happening to me. Haven't found a specific cause...
Just got the same issue
Today got mine not turning on.
Managed to turn it on by holding volume up and power button together for about 30 seconds while phone was on a stock charger. After that I saw blinking orange led. When I resolved buttons there was a battery pictogram. After pressing and holding power button I finally got turning on vibration and Google logo.
The only things a made after the charging were making few photos of my cat (from the lock screen) viewing them in gallery. Then I locked the screen and put the phone on a shelf. In a hour I was not able to turn it on.
My phone has stock rom and only few third party apps installed.
I got muy Nexus 4 on 21-Dec-2012. 4 days ago I flashed to Android 4.2.2 which phone dowloaded itself. After flashing phone was rebooted.
What I noticed is that it shows 70% battery. But It was fully charged few hours ago.
30% in 2 hours! In my opinion some service/app drained these 30% by using 100% of processing power that caused overheating and/or hanging.
I too have just had this problem. And I've had it previously when making calls, the screen simply won't respond at all, its quite annoying.
This morning my alarm went off and the screen wouldn't turn on, it went on for so long I almost threw the phone across the room. I eventually held the power button and volume down/up button and then the led blinked orange a few times and the phone reset, now it seems fine.
Its a very annoying problem, and could be very serious depending on what you are doing, might have to phone the play store and tell them.

This has happened to me twice now. First time was a month ago and the second time was this morning. Phone was at 100% just woke up checked my messages turned off phone 10 min later it will not turn on. Un plugged cord re plugged cord nothing finally pressed up/down vol and power for about a minute (long minute) and the phone rebooted. YIKES!
Every thing seems normal now but I hate that scare and the fact that it has happened to me twice. Full Stock, not rooted.

Happened second time.
I was able to turn it on again by following the same steps. But this time I got some strange issue: after resolving vol+ and power buttons I saw battery pictogram with some frame with a blue background; when phone finally booted up this frame and blue background were visible through the my desktop background an screen itself was much lighter with pure colors. Only after about 5 soft resets screen seems to became nice again. Each reboot caused blue frame to become less visible. I'm confused and worried.
Also during all these reboots this frame with blue background was visible even in behind "Google" and "X" logos during booting up.
Another strange thing is that on screenshots I made this frame is not visible.
That would have to do with LCD or software..
As the battery & Google are just pictures that change. If you understand what in saying lol ?
Nexusâ´
Pretty self explanatory. It was dead for a couple of days, I put it on the charger for almost the whole day, now I get no picture, but the backlight is on when I hold the power down a minute. I bought it at walmart, doubt I have the receipt, and didn't get any extended warranty. Is there a way to fix this issue?
I've got the same issue. I was playing Tupsu, when suddenly my n7 rebooted and there was no picture, just semi-strong backlight. When the tablet died, the battery was about 45-50% and I was charging it through notebook's usb port (original n7 cable). I tried to turn it off, but pressing and holding the power button only made it reboot once again (i assume it was rebooting, since the backlight was turning off and on in a second). I've tried it many times, with tablet plugged into wall/usb charger, and even with the power+volume up/down combination, it would still behave the same way. However sometimes after rebooting there was not only backlight, but also thin, mostly white, horizontal lines, appearing in random places of the screen (appearing and disappearing after like 50-100 ms). It would stop only after a reboot, and happened every 5-10 reboots.
I've decided to let the battery die to see if it changes something, and as you may guess - it didn't. It died estimately after 2 or 3 hours. Now it's all the same, except for when I plug it to the charger, there's only a very low backlight (still no picture) and it's blinking... It also makes this continuous "electricity-related" (sorry, I don't know what's the word to call it ) sound. After I press the power on, or let it charge for 1-2 minutes it boots up, and there's just a semi-strong backlight, like earlier.
It's a refurbished 8gb n7, which I got 5 days ago from the polish Asus online store. Oh, and the speakers weren't 100% fine, if it changes something. They were fine at first, but after i plugged headphones in and out, they were making cracking sounds when the volume was over 50% or something like that. Is there any hope I can fix it myself?
edit: the android ver. is 4.2.2, not rooted
the device is getting warm on the left side when being charged, or just turned on...
Have you tried pulling the battery for a couple of minutes?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Nope, i don't want to mess with the hardware since i've bought it only few days ago... I'm afraid it may leave some traces of being opened, i'm not willing to take the risk.
You won't leave a trace pulling the battery. Just use a guitar pick or credit card and run it round, the back comes off very easily.

Yeah that is definitely worth a shot. Just pull the battery.
Ok, I did it.
Didn't change a thing >:[
btw. I didn't actually pulled off the battery, i've just disconnected it - it doesn't make a difference, does it? and another thing - the backlight was turning on immediately after connecting the battery... with these randomly popping horizontal lines.

I've got this too! Pulling the battery does nothing. Last time it just fixed itself, now nothing.
Worried I'll have to take mine back.
How did that 'fixing itself' happened to you if i may ask? And how long did it last?
Your tablet has gone into sleep mode to protect the battery from further damage due to its low level of charge. What you're seeing is by design, as complete discharge of a lithium based battery is bad for it. You should never, ever, let it sit dead for a couple days. If you do discharge it to the point of shutdown again, immediately put some sort of charge on it, as waiting to long will cause the battery's protection circuit to fail completely. Best practice is to not let your device go to the point of shutdown, but rather to plug it in when not in use. Your battery will have a longer lifespan.
Plug your N7 into the charger and immediately press power and volume down to get into the bootloader. Once there, use the volume key to scroll to Power Off Device and then press the power button. After it powers off, unplug it and then plug it back in. It should then charge normally.
You seem not to have read my posts at all. When it happened, the battery was about 45-50% and it was plugged into the laptop's usb port. It suddenly rebooted and there was no more picture, just the backlight - and it lasted for like 2-3 hours (maybe even longer)! Can a completely discharged battery power the backlight for this long? After it turned off at last, i put it on charge and i've tried the power+volume method and it didn't do anything (btw. i already wrote about it)... then i let it charge for like 5-6 hours and it didn't change anything except for the fact, that the battery was evidently charged, because the backlight again lasted for few hours.

Actually, I was addressing the OP without realizing that this was a zombie thread.
To answer your question though... yes, when in sleep mode the battery can still turn on the backlight and keep it powered for some time due to the low power requirement of a black screen. Many users that have found themselves in sleep mode actually have their tablets enter into a prolonged cycle of bootloops. From the sounds of it, your device seems to have, for reasons unknown, put itself to sleep.
Anyway, I digress... I know you've stated you've tried various combinations of the power and volume keys. Have you attempted holding all three buttons for approximately 30-40 seconds while the tablet is plugged in? If it that will force it into the bootloader, you can follow the steps that I posted to get it up and running again. If not, then it seems your best available option is to seek an RMA from ASUS. Given your speaker issue, I'd send it back regardless- you shouldn't be expected to deal with battery and speaker issues after only five days.

Yep. Many times. And even longer than a minute.
Anyway, I'm going to contact their crappy support. Thanks everyone for trying to help.
It won't turn on even the battery icon is absent when I try to charge it. Also when I hold the power button for 15 seconds it only blinks/pulse 3 times(notification light). I bought this tablet at Best buy...and it's over 15 days now.
Can I still return. This one or get a replacement from Bestbuy/Google? My tablet isn't rooted yet with locked boot loader too.
Thanks.
Hold the power button for longer, like 30-60 seconds.
If that doesn't work, connect to charger and let it sit for a while, then repeat.

Thanks...it works now...and the battery was so drained it didn't power up for a couple of minutes ... . I checked the battery section and it was mainly caused by Vonage app...I don't know why ...it should consume about 50% of the battery... I just used it once . :/
I'm having the same problem I am completely stock with a locked boot loader. I had just took my device off the charger and it powered on and I saw Google so I thought it was starting up, when I looked back the device was off I've tried holding power for 30 seconds and even tried putting it back on the charger, but its not even showing the charging indicator.
Edit:I got it to work, I left it off the charger for 5 minutes and then tried charging it again and It started charging. I turned it on and it said I had 65% battery so I find it kind of weird that it didn't start up.
