LCD Color Temperature Variation - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Just got a replacement tab 10.1 from Amazon to replace one with at least 3 stuck pixels & I'm seeing that this new one is warmer then the stuck pixel one which is on the cool side. Is this likely a physical difference in the panels or a software adjustment? Will we be able to eventually adjust colors like on a PC? Which color temp would you guys prefer?
I mainly exchanged for the pixels, but I also notice some dots of dust which I'm just gonna put out of mind. I'm guessing these aren't assembled in clean rooms. Have a Transformer to be returned that has it worse with what looks like a speck of lint.

I'm using mine as a portfolio and calibrated colors / neutral would be best. I have noticed that colors are more saturated with the tab and a little colder compared to the iPad.
I also found dust on my screen and it bugs me. I'm geting a replacement at Best Buy.

Just got my iconia: dilemma

Well just got my a500
tested it straight out of the box and sure enough I have one tiny dust spec under the screen.
Otherwise no other issues.
I can also say looking at this screen against my transofrmer (that has mucho light bleed and also a dust spec and is creaky) that the screen is definitely not as nice. It is cooler in color though ironically with better blacks. Also the viewing angles while acceptable are not as nice.
Well Now I have a dilemma. I got a 32gb Acer for 30$ more than a 16gb Transformer.
Transgormer has nicer screen but suffers light bleed a dust spec and is a bit creaky.
IT is a bit lighter with over all nicer screen. IT also has the keyboard dock potential for future.
Second option is I keep the iconia which has more storage usb prot feels better in the hand and better built, but also has dust spec under screen.
I am not sure what to do. Afraid to exchange the iconia as given the track record on all these tablets, I run the risk of getting some light bleed or dead pixels etc.
SO do I just suck it up ignore the little pixel sized dust spec and live on?
Do I gamble and exchange? DO I return both wait till availability on transformer is better and perhaps with time they work through the build quality issues?
Or just use nothing, wait a month and get the galaxy tabb.
One thing for certain is galaxy tab will have nice or nicest screen will be thinnest and lightest and by being samsung will likely have more accessories like cases etc for it.
IT will likely cot a bit more (not too big an issue) and might not have much expandibility which may or may not be much of an issue as there will likey be accessory to dock to allow usb host etc.
Did you not buy them locally? If it's a local store, open it in the store and make sure it's up to par. If not, I'm not sure what I'd do either.
I have couple of the dust particles too. I'm exchanging mine today.

I've used my Iconia for a couple of weeks now, but it wasn't until this post that I thoroughly inspected the screen and found six(!) tiny dust particles under the screen. They're all 2-3 mm from the edge of the screen, so they're really not an issue. Imho light bleed is much more annoying.

Impossible to tell in store really dust and screen might bleed as the tabs are in this special.plastic and the lighting in store makes.seeing.small defects hard. Got both via staples which only has them available to order via online here in Canada.

If it was near an edge would beless of an issue. Orbison however mid screen on right third so see it easily when background is white.

Build Quality : White vs Grey

A little bit of an odd thing to come to light for me, but I have a good hunch that the white color devices have a higher build quality vs the grey ones.
I may go so far as to say that there are slight variances outside of just the color. ...or they were build on different assembly lines...or with different QC on batches because of whatever reason you want to put there....or any number of things.
Now, here is what I base this on. I have gone through a number of white and grey devices for personal use. At least two white and two grey models. It is not exactly a scientific testing, by any means, but with the white tablets I found very solid in terms of no creaking, no light leakage, and just overall solid feel. The grey tablets had creaking, pen not staying in properly, and light leakage, among other things.
I have two boys, 2 and 3 years old, that love playing with Daddy's tablet, and a wife that uses it for personal and school use (until she gets her own tablet here in the next couple weeks). So I have put each of the devices through their paces.
So, mainly for fun and intrigue, I wanted to see if anyone could share any good or bad build feel or issues they have and what color they have. Anyone else have some insight?
Maybe because our beloved devices are built in different factories and/or comapnies there might be quality differences and/or also the parts for assembly do come from different manufacturers ...............................
Mine is black (not gray) and no problems at all, although this is my second one. The first had light leakage.
2 young boys? Get the toughest case you can find. I recommend a silicone case with good screen protector.

.......... but always better than iPhone 5 that comes with scratches and leakages in series ......... :silly::laugh:
It's because Samsung is racist.
On the real though I've had both a white one and a gray/black one. No difference in quality on this end.

I dont think silicone is a good idea. I experience it my self. Due to its semi hard material, Silicone case do scratch my bezel when some dirt is between the bezel n the case. I think tpu is a more better case..

I noticed the same thing that i almost weighed this white one last night in lab. Feels much more sturdier, no squeaking yet, and when i read the reviews from sites that had the grey one it kind of confirmed my suspicion. There is somethinig definitely more stable with the white one in my opinion. My grey one had six "scratches" on the back even though it was in the case 99% of the time - which didn't make sense. Then when i read androidpolice's review and saw the same six scratches, i rolled my eyes.
I will say about the pen - because i feel the same way about the squeakiness (although i can't comment on the light bleed - neither had it) that my white pen feels lighter than the grey version. I wonder if the grey version is a different type of plastic or polycarbonate (whatever it is made of) than the white. I wish there was a way to figure out the date manufactured from the serial number similar to Asus.
Now, I know that Samsung has used different components in their phones before. I have a SGSIII on Sprint. It has a different camera module than a colleague's who also has the SGSIII on sprint. The difference on mine seems to be a clearer picture and much better quality in darker areas (especially at night) and not as much noise. I'm curious if Samsung did use diffferent factories, or components on these versions. I personally don't think it was a different line or different factory, but i could be wrong. It just seems such a drastic change but it's entirely possible (similar to Asus supposedly changing innards in their Prime over a 4 month period).
I think a lot of manufacturer's do it (HTC Evo 4G comes to mind with their screens) and it's so early in this production i hope it's not true, but in my experience i wasn't going to deal with 6 "scratches" on a tablet that cost $499 that still had the plastic protector on the back. The sad part of the story is i didn't even KNOW about the scratches until i went to exchange it because it had stayed in the case for so long.
I can't comment about the white version. I did buy the grey one a couple days ago and made the sales person open the box so that I could give it the squeak test... rock solid. Snapped er up!!!
Having own both colors, I can say with confidence that the white one is built better. The slot to hold the pen is more tight and less squeek.
My white one creaks when pressing just around the Samsung logo on the back. Only slight creak. I Can live with that.

There are only three components that differ based on the color - 1) the display because of the colored surround, 2) the molded plastic back cover, and 3) the metal-esque bezel. I'd rule out any difference caused by the display because it hasn't come in to play in any previous discussions. From a physical perspective that leaves the bezel and plastic back cover.
There's no artistry or complexity involved in molding plastic so I'd guess all the bezels and back covers are made in one place and shipped to the different factories that assemble the Note. Neither the bezel nor the back cover have any complex lines or angles (probably intentional) so I doubt there's any challenges in producing an accurate die that the plastic is formed in.
So one of two things is causing some Notes to be less solid than others: 1) assembly issues where they aren't put together properly, 2) a part like the frame, bezel, or back cover wasn't produced within tolerances and fit isn't correct. I'd guess probably 90% is assembly and 10% irregular components. Regardless, I can't see white being any more or less immune to defects than grey. They may produce a week's run of gray followed by a week's run of white. If something happens on the assembly line during a single week’s run all of a single color could be affected. But it would be random as to which one. There certainly could be aesthetic differences caused by color. Look what happened to the blue SGS3’s when they launched.
My grey one only creeks on the lower right corner (where the s pen is located) is this on the white version?
My white one is as solid as a rock.

I have the grey. Not noticing any squeaking, feels great. I didn't buy the white because the IPad was white. I didn't want anyone asking how I liked my Apple.
I have a white 16g WiFi+3g (gt-n8000). The back creaks on the left side. Can't decide whether it's due to build quality or it falling off my bed one night. Regardless, I don't mind it too much.

This is the silliest thing i've ever heard.
No seriously, don't you think they make them with all the same components, at the same factory, at the same time....etc, etc.
The only difference with these is.............Color! Yes thats it!
Or maybe they have separate factories in different countries. That would be cost effective. Maybe even the job requirements are different. The white factory requires college degrees.
BTW, I have both a white one and a black one presently, so it's not sour grapes
Had two grays one creaked one didn't.

Same here , No light bleeding as well which makes me soo happy considering my iPad 2 (replaced once, still had it) and Asus transformer Prime both had it. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is by far my favorite as well.
Traded my grey in today for a white one (Not intentionally i went for a 32g model but no dice) but i can honestley say this feels so much more sturdy, I read all types of reviews so when i first bought my note i checked for that creaking on the sides, sure enough it was there, this one (white) however does not creak. So you have a valid point.

The white model has a better screen

So I was in currys today comparing my black 16 gb samsung note with there white version, I put both on the same screen mode and full brightness, and put both on the same settings page, there white one had much better whites and a but nicer and mine looked more yellowish and not so white, considering trading it for a white one, but is mine faulty or could it be the black bezel and agains the whites on the screen makes it look warmer, any ideas??

Sounds like a coincidence concerning normal LCD screen variance that you're attributing to what you can see without that knowledge. The truth is that the only difference is the plastic color. The components are identical, though through the manufacturing process LCD screens are more sensitive to variation than other things. I've had several iPads of the same color and generation side by side and the screens all vary in terms of yellowing, light bleed, dead pixels, et cetera.
My Note 10.1 has more yellowing on one side than the other, and when the screen is black I can see light bleeding along the edges. On my iPad Air I have the same exact yellowing problem. Hell, on my iMac I can see it on a pure white screen.

Agreed. Screens are produced at one plant, probably multiples, and shipped to wherever final assembly is. The different color devices are all made on the same assembly lines with the only difference between them being the small subset of colored components. Now if someone said certain batches of either color had screens that were "off" that would make sense because if a screen manufacturing plant put out a bad run an entire sequence of devices would be affected. Hitting production tolerances on a 10" 299 PPI display is dramatically harder than the old 147 PPI display. I'd bet yields are probably in the 90% range with the balance ending up in the garbage.
There has been known for over yellow screen, I haven't noticed mine being yellower on one side though, I do have light bleed, but I don't mind that as much, just I like good whites for reading etc

Anyone else have blue color shifting when viewed even a little off-axis?

I received my Axon 7 on Wednesday this week. The AMOLED screen does have very good blacks and looks vibrant, but there is an issue I haven't seen discussed - I'm trying to determine if its just my phone, an issue with AMOLED in general, or perhaps a coating specific to the Axon 7:
When I view the phone directly, whites look correct (warm, natural or cool depending on the Display setting). However, turning the phone even a little off-axis, 10-20° either vertically or horizontally, introduces a very small blue shift - whites especially take on a bluish, sort of washed-out cast. It makes the colors seem much more shallow and unreliable. Can those of you who received your phones go to a WHITE or light-color screen and report if this happens for you too?
This is actually hard to identify, most people will just see something is a little "off" - to my eye, it looked like a very subtle version of a TN-panel color shift. I never have seen this on an IPS panel, though off-angles may get washed out (see Nexus 5/5X) quickly at 50-60°, they always retain their color, even if it lightens. Or, e.g., the Moto X Pure 2K IPS panel that I'm coming from has zero off-angle color shift, no wash-out, and just darkens a little even at 180°. This is my first AMOLED panel, so I'm not sure if it happens often.
If anyone can help me determine whether this is a defect or an expected limitation, that would be great.
I've noticed it on my A7 too. This is my first AMOLED phone, so I too am not sure if this is normal.
I see it also. Thanks a lot now I won't be able to insert it.
For now I will blame the screen protector that came in the screen.
Welcome to Amoled.
The cheap screen protector contributes too,
Thanks, all - I guess it's just the phone then. I actually don't have the screen protector insert applied, so I assume the "screen protector" refers to the factory glass overlay.
Does anyone know if even the new Samsung AMOLEDs exhibit this shift? I think the Axon 7 is technically a Samsung panel, but I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung kept the best AMOLED technology for themselves.
Not sure this is a dealbreaker, but it's definitely a step down from the great color-true viewing angles on the Moto X Pure. (Too bad Moto abandoned the good design the Moto X Pure had for gimmicky snap-on modules this year rather than iterating - it seems like the Axon 7 is otherwise the spiritual successor to the MXP.)

Of course Samsung keeps the top production panel for themselves... However, it's still a great panel according to colorimetry tests.
Don't notice it on my unit. Jumped from a galaxy S7 edge to the Axon 7 and the display looks exactly the same to me.
This is an area that has driven me a little crazy. I'm used to my Samsung AMOLEDs (Note 4, Note 3, S3, etc.), and they don't have any noticeable "shift", This screen is gorgeous, but it's not a top-tier Samsung panel (obviously). Still, small price to pay for a 400 dollar savings over a Note 7. I am also positive the matte screen protector isn't helping. Once my tempered glass one gets here, I will switch it out and see if it makes a difference.
Which tempered glass screen protector are you getting? I have not read one good review for any of them...yet.
As an update, I went and tried some floor model Galaxy phones at the mall, and they actually had worse off-axis blue shift. Not sure if that's because of the initial screen quality, or that it got worse over time.
Does anyone know of any AMOLED phone (specific model) that does not have any perceptible shift? Does anyone know if the shift gets worse over time?

I believe others are correct that it is the cheap screen protector. Plastics is refracting the light leaving the phone. Since blue light refracts more (the reason the sky and sea is blue). you will then to get more blue especially at certain angles.
I don't think tempered glass of the same thickness will make a significant difference but i do recommend getting a tempered glass protection because the cheap plastic one will surely be scratched very quickly. There a lot of things that will cause increased color shift, but I am not sure its a huge issue. I don't think accurate color is needed off axis. I could be wrong. I typically only look at the screen off axis when I am trying to take a odd angle picture or too lazy to move when I am in bed.
If any one does find a screen protector that distorts less please let us know.

The first thing I did was remove the screen protector, and I still notice a blue-ish shift at angles. It's minor though, and it's definitely not a dealbreaker.

AMOLED screens are typically like that. When I get on the bus and see people using their galaxies, it always looks cyan from an angle. LCD technology loses contrast at angles, whereas AMOLED has chroma shift.

Just to be clear - the color shift happens without any additional protector. Someone else used the word "protector," but I only have the bare Gorilla Glass in front of the AMOLED screen, no plastic or other layer added.
I see it as well with no screen protector on.

I never understood why phone makers use glass. Just make it plastic with a removable glass screen protector that the user can replace if broken. My GF dropped her phone, The tempered glass protector broke but protected the glass screen.
I do like that the S7 active has a plastic screen just wish all companies did this.
Hello,
I have the same issue with 5 devices I was testing. Every Axon 7 had the issue with the color shift from a red tint, to a blue tint when tilted.
Is there someone without the issue or is it really normal?

Screen uniformity

So how is everyone's experience with regards to display uniformity of the Asus ZMPM1? My screen has some issues and I want to know how common these are and if getting a replacement would be wise.
The only reason I went for an IPS LCD display this time instead of an AMOLED was because I was sick of the AMOLED screen lottery where a lot of screens have tints / uneven backlight/ visible mura effects (and also because the Asus was dirt cheap). My previous phones (SGS4, SGS6) both had these kinds of issues and I hoped things would be different this time. But unfortunately the Pro M1 I got from Flipkart is slightly darker/yellower at the bottom. It's noticeable only when brightness is pretty low, but it's still distracting. Should I get a replacement? Or is it not worth the hassle/risk (since the replacement might be worse, as was the case with my SGS6).

I have the 6 gb variant. So far i didn't have any issues with the display.
Yes my screen is also slightly darker n has kind of black blur on the bottom of the nav bar a bit yellowish too on the bottom part, but if u turn it upside down the upper part will also be the same, i have the 4gb version, but interestingly its more vivid and contrasty than other ips lcd, almost like an amoled display, cmiiw
