Just got my iconia: dilemma - Acer Iconia A500

Well just got my a500
tested it straight out of the box and sure enough I have one tiny dust spec under the screen.
Otherwise no other issues.
I can also say looking at this screen against my transofrmer (that has mucho light bleed and also a dust spec and is creaky) that the screen is definitely not as nice. It is cooler in color though ironically with better blacks. Also the viewing angles while acceptable are not as nice.
Well Now I have a dilemma. I got a 32gb Acer for 30$ more than a 16gb Transformer.
Transgormer has nicer screen but suffers light bleed a dust spec and is a bit creaky.
IT is a bit lighter with over all nicer screen. IT also has the keyboard dock potential for future.
Second option is I keep the iconia which has more storage usb prot feels better in the hand and better built, but also has dust spec under screen.
I am not sure what to do. Afraid to exchange the iconia as given the track record on all these tablets, I run the risk of getting some light bleed or dead pixels etc.
SO do I just suck it up ignore the little pixel sized dust spec and live on?
Do I gamble and exchange? DO I return both wait till availability on transformer is better and perhaps with time they work through the build quality issues?
Or just use nothing, wait a month and get the galaxy tabb.
One thing for certain is galaxy tab will have nice or nicest screen will be thinnest and lightest and by being samsung will likely have more accessories like cases etc for it.
IT will likely cot a bit more (not too big an issue) and might not have much expandibility which may or may not be much of an issue as there will likey be accessory to dock to allow usb host etc.

Did you not buy them locally? If it's a local store, open it in the store and make sure it's up to par. If not, I'm not sure what I'd do either.

I have couple of the dust particles too. I'm exchanging mine today.

Do you notice the dust when you're not looking for it?
I've used my Iconia for a couple of weeks now, but it wasn't until this post that I thoroughly inspected the screen and found six(!) tiny dust particles under the screen. They're all 2-3 mm from the edge of the screen, so they're really not an issue. Imho light bleed is much more annoying.

Impossible to tell in store really dust and screen might bleed as the tabs are in this special.plastic and the lighting in store makes.seeing.small defects hard. Got both via staples which only has them available to order via online here in Canada.

If it was near an edge would beless of an issue. Orbison however mid screen on right third so see it easily when background is white.

Sadly returning my TF...

Spent a week with it. So useful and can totally see where a tablet fits into my life. Unfortunately, build quality issues will have me returning it back to Walmart. Sad to see it go though. Maybe will come back to this one since features are the best. New Samsung one looks very nice as well but loses some features that I might need.
What was wrong with yours?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
yes, ive been thinking of getting one, but ill have to order online
what sort of issues did you have?
The biggest issue is light bleeding from the bottom edge (in landscape mode). So bright and some on other edges too. Also it creaks everywhere. Friends pick it up and immediately notice the shoddy manufacturing. As an OS, it is awesome.
one thing about the design of the TF101... other than the oft complained about sharp edges, do the power/volume buttons seems a little cheap as well? I don't have much experience with other tablets, but these feel a little like the ones on cheap electronics in past years.
I have not had many issues with creaks, but while the screen is great to look at I too have much light bleed and there is a random blotch on the screen that is noticeable in darker screens. lastly I noticed a stuck/dead pixel also in a dark screen but that is too small to care about. I will be exchanging mine once best buy gets more stock though.
I do love the tablet very much.
i have the same light bleed issue but none of the creakiness. i don't see how they can let that happen on so many devices where one of the main selling points is the high quality display.
the most irritating thing for me is that whenever i boot it up or play a video on mute an odd crackle comes out of the speakers. i just don't understand why that has to happen.
Mine is going back to BB right after the weekend. Its not a bad tablet, but my old G-tab kicks this things ass all over the place. I find it to be slow at doing most everything compared to the g-tab. No benefit for the money and that stupid propritory usb cord at the bottom of it. Looked promising, but for the money I will buy more g-tabs.

I'm not noticing any of that, mine is well built and beautiful, and no light bleed. Maybe you just got a bad one.
Mine has a tiny bit of light bleed on the bottom when in landscape mode. But it's absolutely not a deal breaker by any means. You guys have super high standards or something.

Not to diss you, bro, but that is some ridiculous sh!t right there. I have the GTab, Xoom, and the Transformer. The only thing 'better' about the GTab is that there has been more time to develop on it, so the options are more varied for root/kernel/ROM activities. The TF101 is already well on it's way there (and it is brand new).
Hardware-wise...there is no comparison. I've got two words for you: viewing angle.

100% Agreed! My GTab screen is horrible. The screen alone on my TF is well worth it.
Interesting, just got mine today and absolutely no light bleed, no creaks. Seems solid to me.

Youre holding it wrong!!!!! You're suppose to squeeze it and not hold it!!!!
Honestly, I have quite the opposite experience with my TF. My TF feels as solid/sturdy as any other tablet I've held and I was actually pleasantly surprised when I received it. Some minor light bleed from one of the corners, but I didn't even notice it until I inspected it and any iPad I've ever seen has had much worse.
Not to say you didn't have a bad unit possibly, just don't want people to get the wrong idea. I love my TF and am more than satisfied with it's build quality. If build quality is an issue for you, I'd be careful with the new Samsung. Their devices all feel cheap shoddy to me at least.

Ditto on all of that from me
Asus did mention quality issues as the reason for the shipment delays, i will be getting another one in June so i'll see then
Overall, i am happy with it, mine does creak, but i can live with it, I did not want to invest alot of money in a tablet, i think $400 is an excellent price
Plus the interest in the device made me want to get it, the threads are really popular
and if the build quality on the models in the summer is better and it eliminates the creaks , i will send it in under warranty
im waiting on amazon.ca to ship my tablet i hope mine don't crack and creak , but if it does i don't think ill return it

2nd transformer and now backlight issues

This is the second transformer I have purchased, received directly from amazon not even a reseller... This one the box has nasty finger smudges all over it and looks as if the box had been opened... but
Anyways... The issue being with this one is that (4) of the backlights are visable at all screen brightnesses. I did not have this issue on the other one I had (screen was flickering like short in the unit somewhere, so decided to return and order new one seeing as it would be faster then RMA)
Not sure if this is normal or if this is another reason to return this device as it seems like quality control seems to be an issue with this product.
Just seems annoying that is what I focus on all the time and not sure if this is normal or if I got yet another defective unit...
Please let me know if yours looks like this otherwise I believe I am returning this one and ordering another. This is unacceptable to me.
I just recieved another transformer from amazon today too. I sent the other one back and purchased this one. Both of the transformers have the same light bleeding like what you have. The one i just recieved today has a lil more light bleeding than the one i sent back. I'm keeping this one. Not going to send it back anymore.
That looks pretty bad. I have some backlight bleeding, but I have to go out of my way to see it (max out the brightness in a dark room).
Here is a picture of mine. And this is basically the worst possible combinations of maximum brightness, completely dark room, and solid black wallpaper.
The light bleed is only a little noticeable on the lower left side and maybe a bit in the upper right. But what is annoying me is if you look closely there is a small light color blotch in the middle lower area of the screen. Argh!
This is the second Transformer I had and the second one with some really odd screen defect.
already requested to ship back to amazon... this sucks!!! but when trying to watch a movie the bleed is horrible.
I wish my original one from walmart didn't have a short in the screen (as you moved it the screen would turn on and off) because that one was otherwise perfect 100% no screen bleeding even on 100% brightness!

I'd return that. That looks horrid. You pay for something and expect to be flawless. Now I mean if this was on display and someone tried to sell you it, you wouldn't have bought it if it came with that flaw now would you.
Yeah, I'm going to return mine. I bought it from a local Fry's Electronics and I got about 10 more days left to do the return. And they don't have anything in stock to exchange with.
I'm still struggling with if I want to exchange or get a refund and buy something else instead. Need a few more days to think it over (and maybe a look at a few more Galaxy Tab 10.1 reviews).

I understand. But it seems like my odds of getting a defect free tablet may be higher with some manufactures than others.
My iPad was perfectly fine, first try. I've had two Xooms, both were perfect pieces of hardware (just too heavy and too expensive). My luck hasn't been as good with ASUS though.
Problem is both of the tablets I want seem to have manufacturing problems. I like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 too (though the lack of micro SD is why I bought the Transformer). But even Samsung seems to be having manufacturing problems with theirs too. Seems like far too many Google IO owners have their glass popping out of their bezel. Ugh. And it's looking like the production Wifi model has this issue too.
Well i deliberately wasnt lookig for issues and i can say the bleed is worse on the tf than my ipad 2. Also, of all sites, this forum craaaaaawls on it. Laggy as hell
XDA seems to really hate Android browsers. Haha. Opera Mini works MUCH better here though.
I thought I'd post a sample of the light bleed vs iPad 2. Both at 100% which frankly I'd never use this dark. However, the other shot is 50%.
I kept them small rather than two megs each. IMHO neither is acceptable at the price point. The tf changes with pressure the iPad 2 doesn't. The transformer is worse.
I have bad luck with screens. Also there are about ten stuck pixels seen on a black screen, I'm sure more if I run the color range.
Would you keep it? Don't think I will be. :/ and the iPad is getting exchanged.
O.K. mine issues:
Light bleeds on bottom right and right side of screen (on bottom left there is not such bleed as on picture this is kind of photo rendering issue)
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/7805/32268220.jpg
Two defective spots of pixels on dark screen only
http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/3120/22912128.jpg
Zoomed defective pixels..
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/7434/72512206.jpg
But I notice this in only %1 in my daily use, because I am not using it in dark room on dark screen at full brightness
What bothers me more is speaker disbalance (right is normal left is only 30% as loud as right). But if I have to wait for RMA I won`t take it to RMA because I just love it too much and don`t want to wait for stupid RMA.. Maybe I will give it to RMA after 23 months (in Lithuania there is 2 Year warranty)
BTW I contacted seller and waiting for answer and if they will not exchange it i will live with these issues
P.S. speaker test:
yah i noticed thatpressure on the back increasesthe bleeding but my photo was with no pressure. And dam this site lags on this transformer.
Still returning...sadly
just received my 3rd one in today. few dead pixels throughout the screen and then one big area that is washed out about the size of my thumb.
amazon refused to exchange this one and now says i have to go through asus. BULLSH**
i have to return mine due to the backlight as well, its got a bleed that seems like its getting worse every day.
also from amazon! i really dont want to send it back either

Terrible acer quality control

So i got a new A500 from costco over the Motorola XOOM because it had the USB port and i turned it on and put on angry birds to test it out. Instantly, I noticed that there was a stuck pixel in the middle and that there was a big spec of dust covering at least 5 square pixels under the glass. I thought it was just bad luck so i went and switched it out at Costco for another A500 and it had 3 stuck pixels, a bubble inside the glass, and a spec of dust. I am going to return it and get the XOOM from Costco. I am really dissappointed about the quality control of Acer and i will never buy from them again. Sadly, the XOOM isn't being sold at costco anymore either because there are the new quad core tabs coming out or the galaxy tab 10.1 is coming because it's for pre-order online. But never again with Acer. Has anybody else had an experience like me? And i suggest that you all use a pixel testing app to see if your Acer A500 has stuck pixels or dust under the screen.
Sorry to hear you had issues. Myself, I have no issues with the screen. I am enjoying mine.
Nope, I have a completely perfect screen on mine: no specks of dust, no bubbles, no dead or stuck pixels, no discoloration or anything.
Wow am I just unlucky? Anyone have screen problems?
negative and I purchased mine at costco. Loving every minute of it when I can get it away from th kids
nope.
No issues - screen is 100% perfect and has stood up to a couple months of heavy use (most of it outdoors) without any screen protection - have no scratches, no dead pixels, been 100% perfect since the day I bought it.
Perfect Screen on Mine too
Not a single problem with my screen at all. It looks great.
No issues here.
They may have had a bad batch shipped to them. The next time you go to return it, tell them your history with the last two and suggest that you would like to inspect the tablet before you walk out the door.
Just probably a bad batch! No issues with mine I love it!

Had tried two Iconias, both of them had dust/stuck pixels on the display. The third was ok and I got that one. However, the case assembly was rather poor for all of them (small visible gaps at the edge of the covers, covers not aligned etc) - not awful, but if you look closely you can see the flaws. Had this with a Galaxy Tab 7 as well though, so I assume it's not just Acer.
ive had two a500s and they both have had dust under the screen when i got them, but that is the extent of my problems.
i had a stuck pixel in additional to the fake chrome coating coming off the volume button. Sold it, haahah. O well. Yep. Bad quality control.
Do you REALLY want to resort to a Xoom of all things?
Try again with the iconia....if that does not work then look at the Asus Transformer.
But a Xoom? YUCK!
no problens here either

My screen is very nice, much better than the one on my laptop as far as uniform lighting and colors go.
No issues at all with the screen. Just the case has quite sharp edges at the gaps.

Has manufcaturing gotten better

So I know there have been tons of threads regarding light bleed in the Transformer but what I'm wondering is if the issue has gotten any better with the newer units. My 45 day return window at Best Buy is coming up and I'm trying to decide what to do. I have some light bleeding on the bottom right of my unit, but it only really bothers me in dark rooms. However since my wife tries not to use lights very much in our house, most rooms are dark. I haven't had any other issues, and I would only consider exchanging it if I knew that the newer ones have gotten better on this front. I got mine in mid May and I assume they've had numerous shipments since then. Have the new models gotten any better on the defect front?
I just bought one yesterday and I am taking it back today. Mine has some separation between the glass and bezel as if it were dropped in shipping or something. I also notice very minor light bleed only at the bottom about middle area so I would say that most likely this issue hasn't been resolved but I am afraid the new one I get tonight will be worse.
I will post up tonight when i get the new one and let you know if it has any bleed....most likely it will. Even the display models at 2 different Best Buys has it. I got mine from Office Depot so that is three different stores all with light bleed issues.
I got mine last month from Best Buy online and it's fine. No bleeding, no creaking, no problems of any kind (except the occasional PEBKAC issue )
I have no problems as ofyet

So it's still a crap-shoot?
Just got mine from NewEgg for $389/fs. So far, no issues. It's a black-sealed, Serial# B60 model. I can't detect any light-bleed, no creaks/cracks. Only had it a few minutes, but all seems well. It was packaged very well from NE with peanuts in a large box. I can't detect issues with the speakers either.
It had Android 3.1 preinstalled.
Also, it has all my phone (EVO) apps installed within minutes ... not sure if that's new to Google or something, but never had that before. It did it automatically when I signed in to Google.

Bought mine in Singapore last week, no problems whatsoever. Is from the recent manufactured batch, B60K serial, TW firmware. Love it, no regrets!
Bought mine Saturday at Compusa , went B&M in case I had to take it back. i have a slight amount of light bleed at the bottom middle right. Not sure if I'll take it back, it doesn't really bother me, but I did just pay for a new product so it should be perfect right?

Yes the one I got yesterday was a serial b6. The one I got today is a b5.
They both have\had very slight light bleed (at the bottom) but I think I can deal with it.
This new b5 is a little worse than the b6 but almost not so much to really even bring it up, but I will. So I would say that it is a crap shoot which sucks. I turned it on at the store but it wasn't dark enough to see the problem. I have seen some that are very bad that I couldn't live with but both I have had I could/will live with; unless they get worse over time.

I would normally agree with your logic about it being perfect, but with these IPS screens it's very hard to totally do away with the light bleed. Even the iPad2, as much as Apple praises their build quality, has light bleed. Mine did and so did my wife's.
Hell, my 46" Samsung LCD has some light bleed in the corners (we refer to them as "flashights").
I think if you get a TF with minimal light bleed, mine is very small at the bottom, you are doing well.
So mine is a B40K series. It sounds like if I can find a B60K series it might be worth it to exchange?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I am going to take my in for a replacement @ Fry's tomorrow as well! If I call ahead of time...will they tell me if they have a B60 in stock? =/ Seems like there are more success stories with the B60...I have light bleeding out all over the bottom...and on the left.
Some people doesn't seem to know what light bleeding is, so i will not believe anyone saying their TF is just perfect without seeing actual pictures of the screen, in max brightness and low light.
That happend on other forums a lot, and after explanations a lot of them admitted that they were wrong.
Same thing with unbalanced speakers, creaking, screen responsiveness etc.
Or... maybe not all of you there are as perfectionists as some of us are, and that's fine. But don't make us envy your perfect products.
Mine (B5) also has one light bleeding spot on the middle bottom (about an inch from the edge) and the screen responsiveness isn't as great s on SGS II or iPad2 (or maybe it's Honeycomb's fault), bothers me a little, but overall I am happy with my Transformer. It's making my life easier a lot on four aspects: saving my laptop (on which i spent a lot and doesn't deserve to be stressed sometimes all day long just for browsing; I am saving it for real work and there are days now when i don't use it at all; also, TF is way better than my wife's iPad 2 on this reason), my smartphone (who's battery now last for 2 full days because of transferring the light browsing, reading and media consuming in bed to the Transformer), my injured back (from using the laptop at desk all day) and my eyes (beacuse of the reason no. 2, with the smartphone replacement for some stuff).
LE: Conclusion: Stop complaining or bragging about it, and just make it worth it's money using it.
Has anyone yet commented the speaker balance in the B60K batch? More experience sharing on the light bleeding wll be appreciated too.
My B50K has passed its refund windows, but I could sell and buy a new B60K, and lose about $100. I need more info to decide...

Said perfectly. I've had a B40, a B50, and 2 B60s. ALL had light bleed to various degrees.
The B60s seem a lot better but they still have light bleed. While I don't doubt there may be a few transformers out there with no light bleed, I'm definitely skeptical of the claim that someone has a transformer with no light bleed whatsoever.
I do a lot of reading on my device and I like to read with white text on a black background so light bleed shows up immediately. The light bleed on the B60 I am keeping is minimal enough that it doesn't bother me even in this condition.

Build Quality : White vs Grey

A little bit of an odd thing to come to light for me, but I have a good hunch that the white color devices have a higher build quality vs the grey ones.
I may go so far as to say that there are slight variances outside of just the color. ...or they were build on different assembly lines...or with different QC on batches because of whatever reason you want to put there....or any number of things.
Now, here is what I base this on. I have gone through a number of white and grey devices for personal use. At least two white and two grey models. It is not exactly a scientific testing, by any means, but with the white tablets I found very solid in terms of no creaking, no light leakage, and just overall solid feel. The grey tablets had creaking, pen not staying in properly, and light leakage, among other things.
I have two boys, 2 and 3 years old, that love playing with Daddy's tablet, and a wife that uses it for personal and school use (until she gets her own tablet here in the next couple weeks). So I have put each of the devices through their paces.
So, mainly for fun and intrigue, I wanted to see if anyone could share any good or bad build feel or issues they have and what color they have. Anyone else have some insight?
Maybe because our beloved devices are built in different factories and/or comapnies there might be quality differences and/or also the parts for assembly do come from different manufacturers ...............................
Mine is black (not gray) and no problems at all, although this is my second one. The first had light leakage.
2 young boys? Get the toughest case you can find. I recommend a silicone case with good screen protector.

.......... but always better than iPhone 5 that comes with scratches and leakages in series ......... :silly::laugh:
It's because Samsung is racist.
On the real though I've had both a white one and a gray/black one. No difference in quality on this end.

I dont think silicone is a good idea. I experience it my self. Due to its semi hard material, Silicone case do scratch my bezel when some dirt is between the bezel n the case. I think tpu is a more better case..

I noticed the same thing that i almost weighed this white one last night in lab. Feels much more sturdier, no squeaking yet, and when i read the reviews from sites that had the grey one it kind of confirmed my suspicion. There is somethinig definitely more stable with the white one in my opinion. My grey one had six "scratches" on the back even though it was in the case 99% of the time - which didn't make sense. Then when i read androidpolice's review and saw the same six scratches, i rolled my eyes.
I will say about the pen - because i feel the same way about the squeakiness (although i can't comment on the light bleed - neither had it) that my white pen feels lighter than the grey version. I wonder if the grey version is a different type of plastic or polycarbonate (whatever it is made of) than the white. I wish there was a way to figure out the date manufactured from the serial number similar to Asus.
Now, I know that Samsung has used different components in their phones before. I have a SGSIII on Sprint. It has a different camera module than a colleague's who also has the SGSIII on sprint. The difference on mine seems to be a clearer picture and much better quality in darker areas (especially at night) and not as much noise. I'm curious if Samsung did use diffferent factories, or components on these versions. I personally don't think it was a different line or different factory, but i could be wrong. It just seems such a drastic change but it's entirely possible (similar to Asus supposedly changing innards in their Prime over a 4 month period).
I think a lot of manufacturer's do it (HTC Evo 4G comes to mind with their screens) and it's so early in this production i hope it's not true, but in my experience i wasn't going to deal with 6 "scratches" on a tablet that cost $499 that still had the plastic protector on the back. The sad part of the story is i didn't even KNOW about the scratches until i went to exchange it because it had stayed in the case for so long.
I can't comment about the white version. I did buy the grey one a couple days ago and made the sales person open the box so that I could give it the squeak test... rock solid. Snapped er up!!!
Having own both colors, I can say with confidence that the white one is built better. The slot to hold the pen is more tight and less squeek.
My white one creaks when pressing just around the Samsung logo on the back. Only slight creak. I Can live with that.

There are only three components that differ based on the color - 1) the display because of the colored surround, 2) the molded plastic back cover, and 3) the metal-esque bezel. I'd rule out any difference caused by the display because it hasn't come in to play in any previous discussions. From a physical perspective that leaves the bezel and plastic back cover.
There's no artistry or complexity involved in molding plastic so I'd guess all the bezels and back covers are made in one place and shipped to the different factories that assemble the Note. Neither the bezel nor the back cover have any complex lines or angles (probably intentional) so I doubt there's any challenges in producing an accurate die that the plastic is formed in.
So one of two things is causing some Notes to be less solid than others: 1) assembly issues where they aren't put together properly, 2) a part like the frame, bezel, or back cover wasn't produced within tolerances and fit isn't correct. I'd guess probably 90% is assembly and 10% irregular components. Regardless, I can't see white being any more or less immune to defects than grey. They may produce a week's run of gray followed by a week's run of white. If something happens on the assembly line during a single week’s run all of a single color could be affected. But it would be random as to which one. There certainly could be aesthetic differences caused by color. Look what happened to the blue SGS3’s when they launched.
My grey one only creeks on the lower right corner (where the s pen is located) is this on the white version?
My white one is as solid as a rock.

samsung colors
I have the grey. Not noticing any squeaking, feels great. I didn't buy the white because the IPad was white. I didn't want anyone asking how I liked my Apple.
I have a white 16g WiFi+3g (gt-n8000). The back creaks on the left side. Can't decide whether it's due to build quality or it falling off my bed one night. Regardless, I don't mind it too much.

This is the silliest thing i've ever heard.
No seriously, don't you think they make them with all the same components, at the same factory, at the same time....etc, etc.
The only difference with these is.............Color! Yes thats it!
Or maybe they have separate factories in different countries. That would be cost effective. Maybe even the job requirements are different. The white factory requires college degrees.
BTW, I have both a white one and a black one presently, so it's not sour grapes
Had two grays one creaked one didn't.

Same here , No light bleeding as well which makes me soo happy considering my iPad 2 (replaced once, still had it) and Asus transformer Prime both had it. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is by far my favorite as well.
Traded my grey in today for a white one (Not intentionally i went for a 32g model but no dice) but i can honestley say this feels so much more sturdy, I read all types of reviews so when i first bought my note i checked for that creaking on the sides, sure enough it was there, this one (white) however does not creak. So you have a valid point.
