[Q] Navigation loses GPS signal after a few minutes - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ROM: Royal Ginger 2.1
Radio: 26.08.04.30
Kernel: ckisgen-smartass-CM7-v1.5 Kernel
Used Navigation yesterday (don't use it very often or for long periods of time) to see how long it would take me to get to a golf course 35 minutes away. Picked up GPS and routing very quickly. However, after about 2-5 minutes, Navigation says "GPS signal lost" and never recovers. While Navigation is running, I check GPS Status and it says it's locked onto 7 satellites.
I exit Navigation, wait about 10 seconds, then re-enter the route, and it's rock solid for another 2-5 minutes (before it shuts off again).
I think this is a Navigation problem more than a GPS problem.
Anyone else having this issue?

Have you tried a different ROM?

I've had this issue on few different roms, never could figure out the cause. Try CM 7.0.3 or one of the latest CM nightlies its fixed in those.

I tired 7.0.3 for an hour, but it gave me some freezing/FC'ing/rebooting issues, so I went with RG 2.1. Maybe I'll wait to see if RG 2.2 will solve these issues before jumping to another one.
While I'm at it, my favorite Denver joke...

I was having similar problems myself. There is a new app that shows how many GPS' locks you have while in maps and since I installed this my GPS s finally working. It's free so maybe give it a try. https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.illyrium.tools.gpsmonitor&feature=search_result
Also have you tried the fixes on Team Royal's GPS fix page ? http://www.teamroyal.net/gps.html

I did not do that.
So it worked yesterday the whole time without problems traveling 20 minutes to a friend's house, but it lost connection driving to a place 3 miles down the road. Strange stuff.

Hey fellow Coloradans and others,
I've got an HTC Inspire running MIUI- a CM7/AOSP derived ROM, but I'm having the same (I think) issue. I get a near instant lock every time, but soon after, Navigation "loses" the lock. It happens every time I use navigation. This doesn't happen in Sense based Roms. The other nav program I've used, Mapquest, does not have this issue. I've found that if I toggle GPS off then on again after I open Navigation, it holds the lock. While this is an improvement, its still annoying. I realized we're on different phones and ROMs, but have any of you found a solution that works? I've tried all the recommendations, including the one in this post, to no avail. Thanks for any updates!

[FIX]GPS Dropout Fix

If you're having problems with your GPS continually dropping out, particularly on the new Gingerbread release, try downloading GPS Status from the App Market and reset your AGPS data.
In GPS Status,
hit [Menu],
then [Tools],
[Manage A-GPS state],
[Reset],
Optionally you can [Download] for new A-GPS data
I tried it on CM7 nightly 36 and apparently I'm getting quicker locks.
[Update 01]
Apparently, that first method works for some, but not all. There is a second method, but it requires you to be on a Sense Rom (Stock HTC based). I'll add it here. More people say that this works better, but I was reluctant since I was already on an AOSP Rom (CM7), so I would have to flash back to a Sense Rom.
You will need your MSL code for your phone
Using a Sense Rom,
go into the Phone Dialer,
and Dial ##GPSCLRX# (##4772579#)
(Reboot)
Here is the original post by SantinoInc: GPS Fix (GPS Reset)
Were you driving? That has been stated numerous times to only work while not moving. Or to only work for a short period. I did the ##GPSCLRX# fix and have not had to worry since. Getting down to 6m accurate whole driving.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do you type letters on the dialer? I tried using the number key with those letters (works out to ##4772579#) which didn't work. So I feel appropriately humbled. How does one run that code, please?
GPS Status works fine, but I only use it for this; so, if I can not have another app on my phone that would be great.
Thank you for your time.

I was also having GPS problems with the CM7 ROMs. I restored a Sense ROM and ran the fix using the dialer, then restored my CM7 ROM and my GPS worked perfectly. However, I just flashed to the lated MIUI ROM and now my GPS is taking a long time to lock. Had maps open for 10min on my drive into work before it locked on. It did eventaully lock but it doesn't seem to work as well as it use to. Wondering if this is a MIUI thing??
Im in Japan on a seasonal stanby for three months
so i dont have service, just paying 9$ a month
Im trying the ##GPSCLRX# on a sense rom so i can switch over to a 2.3.3 rom
I put in my MSL and did the reboot
i opened maps and have been waiting for around 30 mins for a lock
and NOOO success
It just will not lock!
Is it because im on Seasonal standby?? and not using phone service
My GPS is on and im using wireless networks turned on
its still moving around not locking
ahhhh!!!
My gps would not lock and the icon would just disappear after a few minutes. I was able to get it to lock using the steps for 'GPS Status' app, but I had to do it again the next day. But after closing out of all the apps, the gps icon was still there and would not go away.
There was no need to start another thread on the GPS fix; it's been posted for quite awhile now.

No, even from Japan with no service you should be able to get a lock. In fact you should be able to get a lock from anywhere with NO data at all, but you do need a data connection to download the map data and see a map overlay of where you are (obviously), and also you need data in order to download the GPS "cheat sheet" A-GPS data. But it sounds like you have other problems, perhaps your ##GPSCLRX# code didn't take. Did you reboot all the way through? try it three times in a row and make sure that you do NOT use any app that can access the GPS device after the last reset before flashing an AOSP rom. That includes the market, the web browser, maps, latitude, navigation, etc. After the second time you reset it, try shutting it off entirely in the control panels.
GPS fixed on CM7
Hello,
I tried everything said in forums about gps fix but I had no gps on CM7 nightly and had no problems in sense roms. I do not remember where I found someone recommending a kernel for gps fix and another people said ##GPSCLRX# solution should be apply 3 times in a row to be effective, so I tried both, I have gps working perfect on CM7 but I cannot say which method was the solution.
This is what I did:
- Made a backup, of course.
- In Ginger-AleV2 (sense rom) I dialed ##GPSCLRX#, then enter my MSL, reboot automatically. Returning from boot I repeated this step other 2 times.
- Go to recovery (I have Amon-RA 2.3) and restored my CM7 nightly #86, then I flashed #87 (in same session, just wipe cache & dalvik before), then flashed GoDm0de-v8 kernel (in same session too).
- Reboot and checked GPS, working perfect since more than 8 hours.

after you do the gpsclrx command and it reboots you NEED to open the google maps or similar software, let it lock and track for a few minutes, then reboot and nandroid back to cm7
Just for giggles, leave your GPS on when you flash CM7. That was what finally worked for me.

GPS Issues still...

When I made the switch to android one of the things I was most excited for was google maps and free turn-by-turn. I have tried everything to make this happen on my Fascinate. I upgraded to 2.2 and even tried the GPS Aids app. So my question to you guys is will the GPS ever work properly on this device or is there any other tricks I can try?
Thanks!
Did you update the radio?

Uh. What issues are you even having? Although I do have some minor issues also. It connects perfect but every few minutes it drop GPS signal for about a minute and then picks it back upnot sure when this happened or how long or what version it started on as I barely ever use it.

I can never get a lock on my location, even after letting it sit for several minutes. It is always in the right area but off with a massive blue circle.

He's got at least VZW location services on due to the massive blue circle, which uses cellular triangulation. Wifi can get you a smaller circle, but doesn't work as well as GPS.
My phone has been totally unable to get a GPS lock for quite a while (since upgrading to EB01 based roms, but even on DI01 and DJ05 it was incredibly pathetic), even with updating the A-GPS data and having VZW & Google location services on.
I have tried all suggested issues. Do you think it is a hardware issue with my phone and I should trade it in or am I still missing something?
Sounds like you might have bad hardware. Since EB01 I just recently realized I didn't even need to have vzw or google locations checked. I get a lock just using stand alone service. 8/11 birdies locked in 18sec with an error of 13ft inside my house with GPS Status. And that was after a full wipe and rom flash.
good day.
Since EB01 happened I've had a near instant lock every single time.
I had the exact same prob. My gps problems have been completely intermittent, sometimes it would lock on and other times it would not. No matter what rom or radio I flash. But this is what seems to work pretty well.
1. Don't use the gps toggle button on the pulldown. Use the settings.
2. Use google maps v4.7 and don't let it update.
Hope this helps...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've been using the option from the pull down menu with mixed results.
I've started going into the location & security and enabling/disabling gps from their with much much better results.
Thanks for that tip .
With SC 2.4 ROM GPS was working GREAT!!
I updated to SC 2.6 and I cannot get a lock at all.
With Wi-Fi on the best i can do is get my location and the directions. I can only guess that maybe the clock was changed / tweeked in the later versions.
When I get time I will be rolling back to SC 2.4 ROM.
I have determined it is not a hardware issue as someone else in my area is experiencing the same issues. I updated to EB01 and super clean 2.6. My lock is about 50% now. Either the service is great and locks right on or doesn't at all with the massive blue haze. Someone suggested going back to super clean 2.4?
Once again thanks for all the help guys!

this is the key. and one of the main reasons I went back to DL09 on my phone until the next build comes out.
if you turn it on in settings-->location&security it will work, and then you can turn it off/on via the notification bar for a while, until you reboot your phone...
Is it google navigation having the issue?
I continue to play around with this issue, and am noticing people talking about still being able to be picked up through GPS tools, but not get locked elsewhere. I am assuming that, like me, they are referring to google navigator giving the message "Searching for GPS". Oddly enough, Google latitude is accurately showing my location even when google navigator is telling me it is "Searching for GPS" and drops my turn by turn instructions. I saw one post from cableguy1 to use google maps 4.7 and disable updates, which I would be interested in trying. Anyone know where I can get v4.7?
*Never mind. Didn't pay attention to the fact that my Wifi was on, and the location was a couple houses off. It simply looked precise in comparison to the big blue circle I'd seen while driving. Sorry for the misinformation.*
SC2.4 doesn't have any locking issues for my wife. Good to go there, but not sure if we're just lucky.
2.4 working well
After finding a couple other threads addressing GPS issues, I've noticed people with sc2.4 to have the least problems. Flashed the AIO Odin version, and have had an instant lock so far all morning. Very nice to have google navigaion back

[Q] GPS reset utility?

Does anyone know of a utility to reset the internal GPS completely?
I use location-based tools all the time, and this annoying GPS failure in EC05 is a real PITA.
I know some folks have had some luck doing a "cold start" using the GPS Status utility, but this has not worked for me.
Symptoms are that the GPS works fine for a while, then loses lock. Going into GPS status reveals no satellites visible at all, and the GPS icon on the notification bar is gone..
Using Menu/Tools/Manage A-GPS state I have tried both reseting the state (cold start) and downloading assistance data. Turning the GPS off and on again also does nothing. OTOH, if I simply reboot the phone, the GPS comes back right away.
Many have reported this issue was fixed in EB13, but came back in EC05. I'm running SRF 1.1 right now, but I also had this problem in the stock EC05 that I received OTA.
Having the GPS just work properly all the time would be ideal. But short of that, being able to restart it from scratch without having to reboot the phone would be an acceptable workaround. Even a command-line utility would be better than nothing.
-Sean
It's aggravating... I have the issue and I too am waiting for some kind of fix/workaround.
I use my GPS at my evening job pretty extensively. I suffered from this issue on DI18 ROMs daily, but I haven't experienced it yet since the dk17 froyo beta.
Exact same problems here. I am on Bonsai 4 but have also had the same problem with all the other EC05 roms I've flashed and the stock EC05. It was fantastic while it was working in EB13.

It came back in ec05 because people didn't use the fixes we used in going from di18 > dk28 > eb13. Search these threads and do what we did and you won't have the problem either.

I was on whatever the stock Eclair release was out of the box -- bought the phone literally the day after Sprint suspended the EB13 OTA rollout.
I got EC05 pushed to me OTA a month later. GPS had the same issue on Eclair and EC05.
To get from the OTA EC05 to SRF I had to Odin back to EB13, but I only had EB13 on the phone for a few minutes -- did not test the GPS behavior.

I've tried a few things.. but at present, I went back to stock Eclair through Odin, then took the OTA to EC05.
Basically, I installed clean, so it's a mystery to me why others don't have this. Actually I think quite a few do, but haven't realized it yet... because the first time you get a fix after boot, it works magnificently well... 3-10 seconds. Great.
It's the down time after that, the hours that pass after that first fix that seems to change things. Without doing anything specific, just using the browser and other things.. the ability to AGAIN get a fix is hindered. Sometimes the GPS doesn't get one at all.
I'll let all the smart guys work on this one. I'm just a competent end user with no real knowledge of how the GPS works.
Just wanted to chime in..
I was waiting for someone to bring up this issue. Symptoms identical to OP's. Stock eclair worked perfectly, and this problem appeared in eb13, after a manual update. Ec05 did not change a thing and Gps status cold start did not help either.
This sucks since I use gps all the time.

As I noted above, I'm not a real gifted technician.. but I'm guessing this issue has something to do with the internal compass. I noticed that my two co-workers who both bought the Epic based on their favorable impressions of my phone, had issues with screen rotation after going from stock Eclair to EC05. Neither are advanced users. Neither rooted or otherwise messed with their phones. I too have tinkered with the compass.. the upside-down calibration and the terminal command pertaining to Yamaha.
I can effect the quality and time of the fix by waving the phone in a figure eight pattern in an attempt to calibrate.. so I'm thinking it's all related.
Running SFR 1.1.0 and I haven't experienced this yet. Took a three hour walk yesterday and CardioTrainer locked me the entire time even through the trails.
How long does it usually take for GPS to lose lock?
If it matters, I only enable GPS, not network-based location.

On DI18 based ROM's, the GPS data cache would not flush itself properly and you would lose GPS functionality usually within hours after it seemed to be working fine. My evening job I work as a delivery driver, and I would have to reboot my phone a couple times a night because of this bug. But as I stated earlier in this thread, I have not experienced this bug since dk17. I did experience some issues in DK28 where the GPS signal would drop out for a few seconds here and there, but since EB13, it's been perfect. No issues. My other Epic is stock EC05, so I will run some tests with that one tonight to see if I can get it to foul up.
So is anyone running Bonsai 4 experiencing this problem at all?
My understanding is that Bonsai uses an EB13-based kernel with only select EC05 elements, so perhaps it is not prone to this issue. If that's the case, that may be enough to make me switch to Bonsai from SRF.
It would also appear that the problem is not universal across all EC05 (and EC05-based ROM) users, as there have been several reports in this and other threads from people with no GPS problems at all. This makes me wonder, among other things, whether or not some specific app or module is either causing (or clearing?) the problem. Since lots of folks on stock OTA have the issue, that would likely be an OEM app.
This problem is a real PITA for me as I use the GPS all the time. Really, really want to find a solution.

That opens a dialog that requires you to key in the MSL code for your phone. Normally the Sprint support desk has to give this to you. (If they do, write it down for future use.) There are other methods to find the MSL, including this one.

Thanks for that data point, but I was really asking about stock Bonsai, since if I switch, that's where I'd go.

Thanks, I have the MSL. I've also now placed a shortcut on the home screen directly to this utility, which actually bypasses the MSL. From Launcher Pro, long press on a blank area then select Shortcuts/Activities/com.android.hiddenmenu/GPSCLRX.
We'll see if using this GPSCLRX utility brings the GPS back to life next time it locks up.
While I am on the hiddenmenu subject, does anyone know which module is the GPSsetup utility? Supposedly this ships with the phone, and was previously (pre-Froyo) invoked with the dialer code *#1472365# but, according to threads on some other Galaxy-S forums, Samsung changed the code due to customer abuse. The alleged replacement code does not work for me, and I've tried all the obvious modules in hiddenmenu with no success.
In the interim, I've flashed LBSTestMode, which seems to work fine for reading and testing the GPS chipset, but is purportedly for a different chipset and so it is not clear if it can actually change settings (see androidforums.com/samsung-epic-4g/308885-gps-aquistion-ec05.html).

Does nothing show up in LauncherPro with a name like GPSSetup or GPSsetup?

As of last night, that version is now stock Bonsai.

I could not find anything. The only Activity I saw with GPS in the name was the aforementioned GPSCLRX. However I should note that I am on SRF 1.1.0, and it is possible that K0nane removed this module from the ROM. Does anyone know if it is in the stock EC05 build? Also, what's the .apk named, so I can try to find it and load it?

First GPS Problem on my Epic!! Are you having the same problem?

Hello,
I am running EF02, I odined it, and I just found a huge issue, GPS Stops working after like 30 minutes of use. It basically turns off if you have it on too long.
Heres a way to replicate it:
Open Telenav, Enter an address, let it guide you for 30 minutes, and before that, you phone should vibrate (force close vibrate) and the voice over will say "cannot get GPS Signal in this area".
Is anyone else having this issue?
Thanks
I will try that tomorrow on my way to work. What is a good test and signal quality for the GPS? I downloaded GPS Test lite from the market. I am running EF02. I went in my back yard and the test program tells me 7-9 satellites in view, using 2, accuracy 18ft. Does that sound like a healthy GPS signal? Is there a better testing program?
That's a good program, the gps location and tracking works fine, but it stops working after a certain amount of time, and can only be fixed by reboot. I've never had this problem on froyo or eclair, I just hope sprint realizes this issue and fixes it
I actually had this same issue on 2.2 while i would use google nav. I noticed it when i took a several hour road trip about every hour to half hour id have to disconnect my gps and reconnect it.
I have the same issue too. For me GPS stops working in about 10 minutes of use. Google Nav would just sit there with trying to reconnect to GPS and says GPS signal loss. Tried EF02 and EF10 modems.
Used GPS Status & Toolbox app from market to get it working again instead of restarting the phone, but GPS still stops working in about 10 minutes of use.
In the mean time I might just flash back to ACS 1.1.1 or the new one just released 1.2
Yep. Mine does the same.
I'm having a couple of these GPS issues as well, never had them before. I've always been able to get GPS functional on every eclair, froyo, and gingerbread release until now (ef02).
GPS Test app shows around 8-9 satellites in view, and only 1-2 in use. Previously, I would always have 8-9 visible and 8-9 in use. I think this is causing my second problem which is:
GPS accuracy is way down over previous releases. It used to be near-pinpoint accuracy, now it's much less accurate. Today driving in to work, the accuracy was so bad that when I was on the highway and if there were secondary roads close to the highway, maps would often place me on those secondary roads and start telling me how to get back to the highway. I've never had this problem before. I'm also getting the telltale large blue circle in maps depicting the poor accuracy.
I'm also having the problem where GPS signal will just totally drop after 10-15 minutes of navigation.
I've tried the usual tricks with resetting agps, etc., nothing has worked so far.
Edit: I'm on the EF02 modem, not sure that it matters though
Wow that really blows, if this the case, I'm going back to Froyo ... I rarely use the GPS but when I do, it's for long trips and I can't have it dying on me traveling to places I am unfamiliar with. Thanks for the bug report on this OP, it seems everyone is having the problem, regardless of baseband EF02 or EF10.
Glad to find out it is not just me having this issue.

Any solution for this issue yet? I rely far to much on my GPS which is why I can't use EF builds is simply cause of this one issue.
Yeah, odin the EC05 MOdem, it does the trick for me

This worked for me as well but its not as good of a GPS lock as Froyo was.

Same problem here. Went back to Froyo EC05, no problems again.
I guess I'll be waiting for them to make progress. GPS is essential for me, I use it on a daily basis.
I had the same problem and eco3 modem works for me
I have been using it mon, tues.wed all day 700am till 800pm and it never disconnects on me.
So far so good
After trying everything on Anonymous to get gps to work I finally gave up. Odin'd ef02 stockplus and gps works flawlessly...used it for an hour drive today without any hickups..give this rom a try....very smooth and fast for Rfs
The Stock Roms works fine!!!

+1 on that my brother! I believe the problem lays in the Ext4 Roms and the other modified roms. The stock roms work perfectly. This is the first time I am endorsing the stock roms. I believe our developers are trying to do a lot without the source code.

Odin the EF02 stock roms. They have a lot of work to do on the Ext4 Roms to get them to work properly.
Just had to vent (at myself, for not having the time to delve into non-stock ROMs the right way but still installing the leaked EF02): my GPS is completely wonky with EF02, and I've tried the EC05, EF02 and EF10 modems. None make a difference.
Now I'm debating whether to go back to EC05 and wait for the official link, or just live with it. Kicking myself...

It happens on EF02 stock as well. I had the same issues on a road trip I took after switching to EF02, would have to reboot constantly in my case to get it working right. Then tried flashing the EE03 modem, still had the problem. But as goku said, flashing to the EC05 Froyo modem seems to have resolved it.

GPS never works after Froyo

hi all.
Ever since I went from Froyo to Gingerbread-based ROMs (and since then to ICS) my GPS has never worked.
AngryGPS doesn't find a single sattelite after 15 minutes, it just like the GPS is dead.
All ROMs I try claim to have a good working GPS, however none actually works.
The GPS lock icon, which should be blinking, is there but not blinking.
Since most people claim to have a working GPS with ICS, could it be a problem with the phone itself?
(I always try the GPS after a reboot)
Thanks for your help.
Been having the same issue, i have tried tens of solutions and flashed tens of fixes, i even opened it to try to fix it and it still doesnt work like its suppose to. Google maps never get my accurate location, its usuallly about a mile off, mapquest however is able to give me turn by turn navigation albeit its often late in its guidance. Very frustrating.
Ics has had good gps for me since day one with ics passion....
Gb had great gps after jagf on eugene's kernel
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.

Well, I do use ICS passion right now and I did use eugene's kernel at some point in the past (maybe with MIUI, don't exactly remember).
Anyway none of them had working GPS.
My phone was manufactured at July 2010. Could it be some old revision with GPS problems? Although I did apply the hardware fix back when I was using 2.2, which did help back then.
This is why I'm sadly back onto 2.2. GPS still sucks but better than on GB.
I did everything possible to get GPS to work on GB. I've done the hardware fix, I've flashed everything possible, and the only time it worked was after each reboot, and only then temporarily.
Agree 100%
GPS in ICS is flaky. It usually works right after reboot then it's a gamble. A few times it would work for me for a day, sometimes second run of GPS Test doesn't bring GPS icon up at all.
To make things worse, external GPS support is equally bad. I have a feeling it uses the same driver/daemon.
Obviously there's either not-so-compatible driver in kernel or the API is broken.
ABC
Try a app from the market called GPS Aids. It does help for me.

Unfortunately the "donate" version does nothing but ask for donations.
I would kick in something if it actually worked, but not on speculation.
GPS at least sort of worked with stock (whatever was on the phone when I got it used) but never at all with any CM build, including with various fixes applied. It at least sort of worked with Onecosmic's ICSSGS, at least once, maybe with some fix or other applied.
A quick update : Turns out, I need two conditions for the GPS to work:
1. The phone needs to be after a reboot, so it didn't go to deep sleep
2. Data connection (WiFi / 3G) should be enabled before you try to get a lock. Even when you use a satellite-only location! I think it downloads the satellite data from the internet. When you get a lock, the data connection can be disabled.
This is the only way I could get my GPS to work in ICS. Even in ROMs that promise the deep sleep problem was fixed.
Cyanogen never let me down, I was usually using some kernel that a worked with the ffc mod, but I literally never had a problem. Also try any miui with angry GPS

I did the this (kept stock kernel though) and flashed the files from this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550327
The trick that worked for me was to get a GPS lock as soon as the phone boots up but before the screen shuts off (see Post #26 by dark79 in the above link). Usually takes about 30secs to look but works great even after deep sleep.

same here! doing this CM9+SZ work like a charm
CM7+yagf patch
My stock roms (Eclair & Froyo) never locked satellites properly until i started using CM7 and other patches. Worked OK for me but still it wasnt a very good solution.
