Display Shootout: iPad 2 v. TF v. Xoom - Eee Pad Transformer General

Looks like the TF does pretty well here overall, coming in a strong second to the iPad 2 and way ahead of the Xoom. They'll be testing the Acer and Samsung GT 10.1 soon, so we'll be able to see how it compares against them as well.
Here are the TF results: http://www.displaymate.com/Asus_Transformer_ShootOut.htm#Suggestions

It's a given that it'd beat the Xoom. It's doesn't have an IPS, and the iPad 2 and TF do.

Having had a Xoom before the TF, I can say that it's more than just a lack of an IPS screen. The Xoom display was very unpleasant, particularly in terms of color. Didn't enjoy it at all. The fact that the Xoom's display is also apparently highly variable from one device to another was also disconcerting...
I'll be interested to see how the Samsung does. I'm guessing it'll come in pretty close to the Xoom, given how over-saturated colors seem to be on it. That's something I don't think this guy will overlook.

The samsung is over-saturated, but it's better than the TF and iPad in terms of the viewing angle and, as I've read, the consistent illumination.
I'm very happy someone who knows what gamut actually is tested the TF. It's great to finally be able to quote a reliable source about brightness, etc.

I own an iPad 1 and a TF, both have decent screens. The iPad, imo, has a more balanced calibration though.

Can someone please post a video with side by side comparison of these two devices?
Thanks!

jon4lakers on YouTube should have one up pretty soon. They usually post videos every few days so hopefully sometime this week since it was a week ago that Noah did his impressions on the 10.1 and said Jon's Transformer is on the way to him for a head to head comparison.
Sceen wise, and this is going off other posts in this forum and my experience with my Transformer and iPad2, the Sammy screen should be the same as the Transformer but more saturated in color. Comparing my Transformer to my iPad2, it's more neutral in color but imo is a tad sharper due to the higher resolution. In another thread 2 members confirmed that the Samsung screen on their I/O 10.1's were a bit more saturated in color than the iPad2.

I've also been waiting for the Techno Buffalo comparison although I think it will be fairly predictable as each has it's pros and cons. In the end I predict they will conclude you need to check out both and can't go wrong with either.
I had the TF but it died after one day so I returned it and I'm now waiting for the Tab 10.1. I prefer something slim and lighter over having a built in USB/HDMI which I'd rarely use.
Also - FWIW and I think I'm an outsider here but I'm using a Xoom now (with 3.1) and it much snappier than the TF I was using, although the TF did die so maybe it had some hardware issues.

I feel bad because I was hoping I could do one for you but unfortunately my friend who has the transformer is away at Indy this whole half week or something (I have no idea how long his indy trip is) until memorial day I'm assuming.
Found this video on youtube!!!!

I'm curious which one has worse screen bleeding aka light leakage.
Another video from the same youtube account.. GT10.1's screen is definitely more vibrant which I really like. I always thought my Transformer, although a beautiful screen, was too neutral in colors for me.

Xoom vs TF101 vs Galaxy 10.1 vs iPad2

Hey all,
Figured I'd pass on my opinions of these devices, and since I finally chose the TF, I figured I'd get the least flames posting here - lol. Looooong time gadget geek/hacker going way back to the Palm Pilot days. If it was a tech gadget, and particularly if it was internet capable, I probably owned one. My current phones are a HTC Desire Z (w/ NAM AT&T 3G) running CM7, and an iPhone 4 jailbroken.
Over the past couple of months I've owned (or still own) the Xoom, iPad 2, TF101 (w/dock) and GTab 10.1. I still own all but the Xoom, and here's a few of my thoughts on all of them and why I'll be keeping the TF.
Xoom - Well built, sturdy, and nice design. Lousy screen (comparitively) and lack of promised features like LTE and the SD Card werre a bummer, but my biggest reason for selling that one was the screen, and seeming lack of "responsiveness" from Moto on the device. Plus I knew cooler devices were coming soon.
iPad 2 - Not yet Jailbroken (grrr) but it's still a suprisingly good media consumption device as is. I go the 32GB AT&T model, and have used it for a couple of trips as a laptop replacement. It'll be cooler when I can JB it, but since I have a fiarly big investment in iOS software, I'll probably keep it a while. Not real impressed with it's Safari performance, considering all the hub-bub about how fast it is. But it does do games great, is slick and trouble free, and nice sized with a great (smart-cover) solution.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 - I got this one on Sunday, so I haven't given it a whole lot of time. It's a beautiful, "Apple like" device from a design perspective. Also the screen while very saturated, is very nice, light weight and thinness also gets it lots of oooohs and aaawwwws from everybody. I hate that Samsung doesn't allow direct mounting of the internal storage, and we're forced to use that awful KIES software. I've just been using Drobbox and all my music is in the Google cloud. This one would have been my second choice if I didn't already have (and love) the...
Transformer 101- now this one is my keeper. A lot has to do wth the dock - I'm an "ultraportable" laptop fan (current Lenovo x220) so I like smaller laptops, and man this thing makes a damn good laptop substitute with tablet caapabilities. The screen is gorgeous, the responsiveness of the OS is equal to or better than the other Androids, and even beats iPad when Safari is sucking wind. I love the quick controls in the browser (missing in the Tab) and that it feels like there's a really robust community developing for this device. I'm not rooted on any of these yet, and actually pretty content like that. Therre's a few things I'd do with root (and anti ad hosts file for one!) but for the most part I'm ok with them as is. When I start to get bored I'll probably root this too.
I sold the Xoom about a month aftr I bought it, I'll keep the iPad (partly for the fun things to try like iOS 5 and it's great for kids to play games on) but the Tab is going back to BB (restocking fee be damned.
I just really like the versatility of the TF w/dock. I have it paired with a small BT mouse and it's like a pretty full featured laptop, that goes into Tablet mode at the flick of a switch. Still on the hunt for the slimmest folio case for it that allows it to be propped up for typing, but the kybd dock does that for now.
Hope these tips help some people interested in any of these, remember their just mmy opinions and everybody has different needs and required attributes that may differ from mine. Either way their all fun.
If anybody has any question about my experiences, fire away, love to chat gadget talk abou the cool toys.

Good Post. Thanks.

I quite agree with you.
From all these devices i tried the iPad 2 and the ASUS transformer.
Im already acquainted with iOS and although its simple and intuitive it's kind of boring. im quite into personalizing my device which the iOs wont really allow.
The bigger and wide screen on the transformer is really nice, and although build-wise it may seems "cheaper" then the iPad (everything that is not shiny-aluminum-ultra-appleish is cheap nowdays) its a comfortable device to hold in the hand.
Price-wise the transformer costs less, + the keyboard dock which increases battery life and also allows you to use it as a netbook.
Performance seems to be almost identical on both A5 and the Tegra 2. BUT the transformer is overclockable, therefore you can squeeze some more juice out of it.
I didnt use the other two, but by reviews i understood that the xooms screen is washed out and not all that great, and the lack of a MicroSD on all of the three (xoom,iPad,GT10.1) is meh-ish.
just picked up mine last night after doing a lil bit of reseasch for a week or so glad i chose this one,, love you wife she bought for me.. BAMBAM

Don't agree with this point. I had the Tab 10.1 for about 3-4 days and I had it mounted on my PC as a plug-play device and was able to transfer files directly. All your need is to install the proper USB drivers from the Samsung US site

Yes it does. Although the Galaxy screen seems better than the TF , its for sure over saturated and hurts your eyes if watched closely for lot of time.

Yeah, you could be right. I'm just so happy with the flexibility of the TF that for now (and for now could be 1-3 months lol) it's the one I'm choosing. IAs I stressed, this is just my humble opinion, hope everybody is happy with their respective choices.
glad to see that are still people who can choose between products without trashing another.
i'm stlll not sure if i'll send my tf back. i do like the versatility it has but seeing that i am keeping my gt 10.1 it's really hard to justify keeping it.
I don't think the keyboard dock can be stressed enough, and I wish I saw more advertising from Asus around the tremendous increase in productivity it provides. It's really not "just" an external keyboard or dock. It really does turn the TF into a completely different class of machine.
That said, I'll admit that if it weren't for the dock, I'd probably opt for the GT 10.1. I don't really use the microSD card I have in my TF right now, and I doubt I'll ever use HDMI. So if choosing between the two on the screen, size and weight alone, I'd probably lean toward the GT. However, man, the keyboard dock makes me want to stick with the TF no matter what else might be out there. As someone who needs to be able to write long-form stuff anywhere, I can't think of a better device than the TF...

i'd have to suppose the lack of advertising is one major factor for the price of the tablet. moto, apple, samsung all have commercials yet i've not seen one asus commercial, not even for their laptops.
To each his own I guess. I played with them all as well including the acer and viewsonic and kept the wifi Xoom. I really wanted to like the Asus because of price but it was just as bulky as my xoom and had serious build quality issues. The Asus screen was great, the quality around the screen, not so much. Enjoy your new toy dude. Aint technology fun
The only one I haven't played with is the tab 10.1, I secretly want one but Samsung and I have bad history.

The dock is the absolute biggest reason for my choice. With my BT mouse (dislike trackpads) I feel like I'm using a real computer, with 16hr batter life and tablet flexibility. Love the shape, size and design of both the iPad and Tab 10.1, but just love the flexibility of the keybd dock too much - at least for the next 90 days or so. ;-)

Ok, I'm a little late to the game... but if anyone buys one of these tablets second hand.... like I just did, then here goes nothing: I bought a Motorola XOOM wifi (32gb) and an Asus TF101 (16gb) (and I nearly bought a Galaxy Tab 1 and an iPad Gen. 1). It's my first tablet; I haven't yet figured out what I'm gonna do with it, but there ya go.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 1: I passed on the Sammy because it did not have an SD card slot.
iPad Gen. 1: I passed on the iPad because.... well, it's an iPad. About as useful as a maxi-pad to me. I was put off by the closed system. It means far less choices for free or hard-to-get apps (of the kind I might need), and limited storage with no SD card options. It wouldn't do, even for a kid's tablet. (Despite the fact I have an iPhone....).
Asus Transformer Eee Pad TF101: I really wish they would have stuck to one name, and left it at that. What was the original name? The "Asus Transormer Mario Consuela Maria Concito Esperanto Gonzalez Eeee Pad TF-101"?
Motorola Xoom: Anyway, it came down to Asus and the Xoom. And boy, I had a hard time deciding. So hard, I spent 3 days of my life testing these two tablets, up, down, backwards and forwards. I ended up settling on the Xoom, but first, the Asus....
The Asus has a gorgeous screen, compared to the Xoom. The TF101 is sharper, more clarity, brighter, blacks and whites are more darker and brighter, respectively. Better contrast and angle viewing, and reading books is less of a strain with a more muted white for the background.
THe sound of the Asus however, is like slamming a suitcase lid down on twelve kittens while Freddy Krueger scratches his name out on the chalkboard. It's the ridiculous choice of stuffing really tiny speakers so they can fire out both sides of the unit. Even EQ'ing the thing with Viper4FX could not hide the tinny shortcomings of the speaker sound. Which also had a tendency to break up at louder volumes (its particularly keen to distorting around 500hz). Connected to a stereo though, was quite another matter.
Though much less bass, richness and body, the Asus resolved timbre better than the Xoom on music program material, output through a stereo via headphone jacks. However, I still preferred the sound of the XOoms (yes, "Xooms" as in I had TWO Xooms to compare), because the Asus was causing some degree of stress through its sound and picture, as compared with the calmer energy of the Xooms.
The construction of the Asus was nice in parts (ie. color, back design, aluminum frame)... but the superb construction, design, looks, case and smaller size of the Xooms is what pushed me toward the Motorola choice. I have not seen any tablet as well built as the Xoom. The Xoom has a timeless design and hough it is heavy on the wrist if you have to hold it up, it just feels nicer in the hand than the ultra-wide Transformer; which appears more dated due to its size and design. The really nice charging dock and 32gb internal (vs 16gb of Asus) also helped me accept the inferior colors and viewing angle of the Xoom. I also liked the nice design of the various white & green charging LEDs, around the screen of the Xoom - the Asus has none of that. I was not enamored by the fact that Asus required special prorpietary data cables, where the Xoom uses microUSB. What also pushed me toward the Xoom was the mediocre camera in the Asus. No flash and grainy photos (though it let in an unusual amount of light, despite or because of no flash... but it was too much light, and washed out detail at times). The Xoom 5mp camera was excellent... perhaps better than that on my iPhone. I like the idea of snapping pictures on a tablet, because of the large viewfinder.
I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to design. On pure performance and lightness of weight, the Asus wins. But you might not feel like a winner, trying to listen to vidoes and music on those tinny built in speakers for extended periods of time.
My wife has a Samsung Tab 4, and comparing it with the Asus, I don't find the Tab 4 any much better in any way, and in some ways, not as a good (it has a cheaper build, for example).

Screen color calibration

This is something I wanted to bring up for quite some time. Comparing the TF's IPS display to that of a GTab 10.1 or an iPad, the colors on the TF display clearly seem washed out. Since we have the kernel source right now, is it possible for developers to include an option to calibrate the color saturation on the display ?
I see many such color calibration apps for other Android phones, but was just wondering if the kernel source itself is enough to do this for the TF ?
Appreciate other comments on this issue.
tried to use the universal one here but it just forceclosed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745248
I recall supercurio's voodoo kernels incorporated some kind of color fix for galaxy s phones. Maybe we will see something similar coming to the transformer soon?
Is this just an issue with random tf's? I ask cause my screen is beautiful. Watching futurama in HD on my Tf is beautiful. I can't even imagine a better display.

mine is fine as well, i just wanted to mess around with the color calibration, but since my screen is pretty much alright im not that worried about getting the app to work. The tab 10.1 over saturates the color to unrealistic levels. The TF is actually very well calibrated as far as color accuracy, being a photographer i appreciate the TF's more realistic color.

I fully agree with you. I had the 10.1 and the Transfomer together for a couple days. The colors are more natural on the Transformer. At ~90% brightness the TF is a better looking display to me.
my asus transformer prime has a yellowish tint screen
Hi,
I have craved for an asus transformer prime tablet since it was released, i had to save a lot just to finally buy it.
But i feel very disappointed becuase from the day i bought it, i realised its screen has a more yellowish tint, which doesnot match up all the reviews on the TFP i read on major sites like CNET and Engadget.
Please help me out ( what can i do to adjust the hue or is there a software update that can fix it), so that i can enjoy the prime as many others do.
I was surprised mine came already packed with ICS V 9.4.2.21-20120323

Iconia Screen Quality Tested against other Tablets... interesting

Didn't see this posted...
The guys at Gizmodo posted a report by DisplayMate which pitted the iPad 2 against the new Samsung G10.1, Asus Trans and Moto Xoom in series of tests to determine the best overall screen quality- fidelity, contrast, viewing angle, etc. And while the main point of the story is how the Sammy knocked the iPad off the No. 1 spot for the first time, I thought what was said about the screen on our third place Iconia's was pretty interesting. Overall it beat out the Asus, but it also was tops in other categories that they thought were very important, specifically- the best calibrated screen of all the tablets- something I guess Android tabs have been derided for in the past (as still are from what the post says of the other droid tabs). Yet another confirmation that the Iconia is the dark horse of the current Tab lineup.
Anyway, here it is-
http://gizmodo.com/5824807/the-best-tablet-displays-ipad-2-just-got-dethroned
I have to admit I was impressed by Iconia. For a budget tablet it exceeded all expectations!

Lol, exactly! Or is it the one with the plain Honeycomb OS...?
But I guess that's what makes comparisons like this worth doing... between IPS on the Trans and iPad, Super LCD on the Iconia and what ever tech the others are boasting about, it's one of the few things that set these tablets apart at the moment. I amazes me how differently they perform or what apps work on one brand but not on another still.

Acer A510 vs Asus TF300t

I know the Acer A510 has a slightly better (prime comparable) tegra 3 but I don't feel like theres that big of a performance gap. I know that the Acer is $50 more but forgetting about the price, what would you guys recommend considering your past experiences with Acer? Btw the Wifi and Gps issues seem to be fixed according to Anandtech in this version.
Advantage TF300t = screen
Advantage A510 = battery
Thanks in advance and sorry if this post upsets some.
i got the tf300t. the cpu difference isn't as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. the mobiletechreview mentioned that the benchmarks are about the same for this cpu vs the cpu on the prime which is also the cpu on the a510. the battery life is a bigger deal but you still get a decent 8 hrs of usage out of it so thats not too bad. the main thing was the support for asus. they always seem to do updates to fix issues. to me that was the deciding factor. also i can convert this into a netbook with a dock. since i do some work from home, it would be nice to be able to do this on a tablet from the bed with the dock.

Just grabbed one myself today. I have owned a Viewsonic, an Acer Iconia A500, Iconia A100 and this tablet. This is by far the best so far. The weight is good, yet still feels solid. The sound is what I found to be really good. The Youtube videos I was watching were at 50% volume and plenty loud enough.
I haven't checked much else, but 720p video is stutter free on youtube so far, and of course all the usual apps work: Adobe Reader, Kindle, Estrongs. For the price I'm very happy with it.

I haven't seen an A510 in person, it is more or less the same as the A500, maybe a bit better. I can still read text when I'm 60 degrees off of being directly above the screen to either side.
I got the 510 yesterday (posted compare/review in 510 thread) and would have got the 300 as well, but Best Buy only has the 16gb version. I ended up getting the 510 and testing the heck out of the display for the 300 (they just put it out). Either case I was only keeping one, none the less.
Build: 510 wins and feels better to hold.
Speed: Both seems the same speed with browsing, media and game emulators like FPSe and N64oid. Due to higher clock, the 510 was a tad faster with MAME Reloaded (like the Prime).
Display: I am biased due to the iPad "3", but for 1280X800 tabs, it seems a tie to me. Contrast is a little better on the 300, but definition seems better on the 510. 510 also seems brighter to me and more natural color. Too subjective to call, so call them a tie.
Speaker sound: 510 is far better
Temps: Perhaps inside the case, both are about the same temperature, but the 510 is warmer to hold on the right side.
Can say that I do not like the location of the USB. The 300 and Prime have an excuse, but not the 510. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE SIDE!!!! The caps and exclamation points should represent my feelings.
IMO it is a tie, since for $50 more, you get a bigger battery and USB on the tablet, but have the dock option on the 300 if you want it. Either device rocks.
The one thing that bugs me on the software side with the 510 is that even when using Desktop agent, all browser apps tried go to mobile sites with some sites on the 510, but not on the 300, Prime or Thrive.
I had the same problem with the Droid X 2. These are the only two Android devices out of many I have tried that does this.

If you haven't seen one, then don't comment; especially when you're wrong.
The screen is far superior to the A500's, it has a Tegra 3 CPU clocked at 1.3ghz as opposed to the A500's Tegra 2 at 1ghz. It's internal storage is considerably faster than that used in the A500, it has ICS as default, with the Acer Ring, and generally just outperforms the A500 in all areas.
I can not stand the Ring interface, but do agree the display is better than the 500. Wifi is also FAR better than the 500.
I returned two 500 tablets due to weak wifi range.

I believe he was referring to the viewing angles, in which case he is right. It is more or less the same as the A500 where the picture becomes a bit washed out at a certain angle. It has really good viewing angles just like the A500 though. And it's very rare for people to USE the tablet at any angle where the color starts to fade. The screen is definitely better than the A500 but "far superior" isn't necessarily right. The colors are richer (than the A500) and it is bright, I don't think anyone could possibly complain about it but I think most people would agree the Asus has technically a better screen with deeper viewing angles.
I agree with that too. The 300 has better angles, but the sweet spot angles of the 510 show better clarity and more natural color. Total net result to me is a tie. The 500 has a lot more pronounced screen door lines than the 510, as well as less color, brightness and contrast. 500 to me seems washed out in comparison. I tried two 500s and returned both due to weak wifi range. IMO, the 500 has weaker wifi range than the much maligned Prime.
So, if viewing angles are narrow, can i have problem if i watch a movie with another person (i can't stay straigth to display obviously)?

Viewing angles are NOT a problem. At all.
For my use im fine with the A500, the A510 isn't enough of a jump. THe A700 however is, and I am glad they will have faster usb and a full port again. THe 1080p screen is nice, the #d display model nicer.
The price of the A700 however may be another story.

Agreed. I've used it propped on my lap, and laying flat on the couch in front on me... my son and I shared it for reading together last night. We we're both able to read without having to move it. I should note that this is all at minimum brightness. In fact, I'm looking for a way to dim it even more... indoors even the minimum seems brighter than I care for. So no, its not IPS, but the display is excellent none the less and provides excellent viewing angles.
